On May 19, Salina Police officers took a report that indicated a theft occurred in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel, 120 E. Diamond Drive.

The victim reported a bicycle was stolen from a rear bike rack of their vehicle. The bicycle was a royal blue with black accent, Trek 3500 Mountain Bike, valued at $450.

Video from the scene showed the crime happened on May 19 at 2:17 a.m. The person responsible for the theft appeared to be a white male, wearing a black hooded shirt, black shorts with a white stripe down the side, mostly white with black accent sneakers, and carrying a black and white back pack.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), has issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.

Marion County Lake, Marion County (upgraded Thursday)

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

If you observe a scum, a paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments, or the water is an opaque green,&nbsp;avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Blue-green algae prompts public health advisories

The Salvation Army Community Center, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue, will be open from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Those needing relief from the heat should go to the south door.

Snacks and cold drinks will be available.

Lynn Rogers wants to help you find money that belongs to you.

The state treasurer was in Salina Thursday to promote his office's program to reunite citizens with unclaimed funds. He was at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue Thursday afternoon to help people determine whether they had unclaimed funds. 

According to Rogers, his office is safeguarding more than $400 million in lost property.

Rogers said that just in Salina there are about 40,500 claims. He explained that some of those may be multiple claims for a single person.

"That's a lot of claims for about $6.3 million that's just for the Salina zip code," Rogers said. "So that's one of the reasons why we're here. We're wanting to encourage people to find it and get it back." 

Rogers said the state has returned almost $8.8 million to people since Jan. 4 with the average claim being over $200.

People interested in checking for unclaimed funds that belong to them can do so by going to <a href="http://kansascash.ks.gov">kansascash.ks.gov</a> or by calling 785-296-4165. Rogers said that checking is easy, fast, and free. If people are asked to pay to check for money, they are not on the state treasurer's website, he said.

Rogers suggested that people check once a year for unclaimed funds. 

Earlier in the day, Rogers returned a check for $16,000 to the City of Salina and one for $6,300 to the Smoky Hill Education Service Center.

Rogers said that some people may wonder why entities such as the City of Salina were not aware of such a large amount of money sitting there waiting to be claimed.

"They never know if a check doesn't get mailed to them, if the mail turns it back. But even more importantly, often times, the reason they don't get it is because the name is funky," Rogers said.

As an example, he talked about money that recently was given back to the Wichita School District. He said there were multiple checks with varying names such as "Wichita Schools," "Wichita Public," "Wichita Public Schools," "USD 259," "259 Schools," etc.

He said there were about a dozen different names that the checks, such as vendor checks and refunds, were made out to, and so they were returned.

Another factor that has played into entities missing out on checks is if they have moved and the checks are not forwarded from the old addresses.

Rogers' office also deals with unclaimed contents from safe deposit boxes. 

Items from safe deposit boxes that are turned over to the state treasurer's office are stored in a vault for approximately two years. If during that time the contents are not claimed, they are sold and the money from the sale goes into an account that the rightful owner can claim at a later date, Rogers said.

"I think that's probably sometimes the saddest part of this job when there's family heirlooms that are in those safe deposit boxes and they don't go back to the family," he said.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities today revealed the 2021 Smoky Hill River Festival print.

Smoky Hill Prairie Haunts, created by Kansas City interdisciplinary artist Rena Detrixhe, had its beginnings in 2020 while Detrixhe was a research resident with The Land Institute south of Salina.

Detrixhe gathered parts of grasses, forbs, and flowers from a remnant prairie along the Smoky Hill River, which she dried and pressed in the ancient tradition of plant collecting, a release from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities noted. Detrixhe then traced the plant specimens onto paper by carefully dusting over each segment with powdered graphite, using a soft brush to render them in silhouette until many layers later, Smoky Hill Prairie Haunts came into being.

“The 2021 Festival Print is part of a series of work inspired by The Land Institute and the process of looking closely at the prairie ecosystem,” Detrixhe said. “An early project of The Land Institute, carried out by co-founder Wes Jackson and photographer Terry Evans, among others, involved isolating square-meter sections of prairie and meticulously documenting the diversity of plant species within these bounds, to better understand the beautiful and complex diversity of the prairie. This print pays tribute to that body of research, and it is an homage to the prairie as our teacher.”

Only 250 digital prints made from the original graphite drawing and signed and numbered by Detrixhe are available. People can obtain a print for a $100 gift to the river festival, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities noted in its news release. If you are interested in a print, go to the Salina Arts &amp; Humanities offices at 211 W. Iron Avenue between 8 a.m. and noon or 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday or go to riverfestival.com.

Detrixhe grew up in a limestone farmhouse south of Russell, where her father and mother still live. She credits her artist mother and her father, a musician and retired USDA/Soil Conservation professional, for encouraging her creativity from a young age. 

Detrixhe holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual art with a minor in art history from the University of Kansas. She also studied in Seoul, South Korea.

Detrixhe’s work has been shown nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Place out of Matter at the Spencer Brownstone Gallery in New York City and In Times of Seismic Sorrows at the Center for Craft in Asheville, N.C. Since 2019, Detrixhe’s work has been featured at The Volland Store in Volland, Kan., the Salina Art Center, and at the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence.

Her Red Dirt Rug installation has been created in galleries and museums across the U.S., including at the Salina Innovation Foundation in 2019. In August 2020, her work was featured in a group show at the Baum Gallery at the University of Central Arkansas, called Threads Through Time.

Homage to the prairie is the 2021 Smoky Hill River Festival print

A traffic stop early this morning led to the arrest of a Salina man on multiple requested drug charges.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., a Salina Police Department K-9 officer pulled over a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder for an expired license plate in the 1900 block of N. Ninth Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

K-9 Tyrann was deployed and indicated to illegal narcotics. A search of the car revealed 3.6 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Forrester said. Evidence indicated that the methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia belonged to the the passenger in the car, who was identified as Steven Fuller, 50, of Salina, Forrester said.

Fuller was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

Possession of an opiate with intent to distribute

Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia

Additionally, the driver of the car, who was only identified as being female, was cited for having an expired license plate.

A Salina woman was scammed out of nearly $3,000 by a caller claiming she had an outstanding warrant for missing jury duty.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that the 27-year-old woman received a call at work Tuesday night from a male claiming to be from the "sheriff's department." The man told her that she had a warrant for her arrest because she missed jury duty and that there was a $2,300 bond.

The caller convinced the woman that if she hung up, she would be arrested, but if she stayed on the line, he could take care of the bond over the phone, Forrester said. The woman was told to purchase pre-paid gift cards and provide the numbers on the cards to the caller. She purchased three cards at Walmart and two at a Dollar General.

She then provided the numbers to the man and was told to break the cards in half and mail them and the receipt to the City-County Building, Forrester said.

The man called her back and said there were some additional fees. She ended up transferring another $860 to the caller, Forrester said.

Forrester wants the public to be alert to calls such as those the woman received. He said it is important to remember that the sheriff's office will not collect bond money over the phone and does not take gift cards.

Salina woman falls for scam, loses nearly $3,000

My friend Amanda has always&nbsp;loved&nbsp;to shop. Finding good deals is a sport to her. But for a while, her shopping habit made things stressful in her marriage. No matter how much money she and her husband made, Amanda almost always spent more than they had. Her husband tried to be understanding, but he was deeply frustrated. Knowing her marriage was on rocky ground, Amanda went to counseling to figure out the root of her problem.

What she discovered was eye-opening! Her shopping habit was actually a reaction to growing up with excessively frugal parents. They were humble people who had learned to survive with very little, but they’d do things like save the bags out of cereal boxes “just in case.” After 18 years of living like this and she was on her own, Amanda started shopping&nbsp;just because she could.

Old Crow Medicine Show got its start busking on street corners in 1998, from New York state and up through Canada, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone, N.C., where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He invited the band to play at his festival, MerleFest, and the rest is history.

It’s been more than 20 years since these humble beginnings. The band has gone on to receive the honor of being inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry, and has won two Grammy Awards: Best Folk Album for Remedy (2014) and Best Long Form Music Video for Big Easy Express (2013). Additionally, the group's classic single, Wagon Wheel, received the RIAA’s Double-Platinum certification in 2019 for selling more than 2,000,000 copies while the band’s debut album O.C.M.S. has been certified Gold (500,000 copies). The band’s latest release is Live At The Ryman (2019) which was released on Columbia via The Orchard. Old Crow Medicine Show’s latest endeavor was the Hartland Hootenanny, a variety show hosted on YouTube that featured music, storytelling, special guests, socially distanced square dancing, and more. 

A virtuosic, award-winning guitarist with a gift for insightful songwriting, Molly Tuttle established herself as a new artist to watch with her boundary-breaking debut album, When You’re Ready. What followed were dates at Telluride, Newport Folk Fest, an appearance on CBS Saturday Morning, and an enthusiastic reception both by critics and her fellow musicians.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama, his wife and their daughters traveled to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico as part of a long Father's Day weekend that was also designed to draw attention to America's natural wonders. Thousands of friends and fans said farewell to "The Voice" singer Christina Grimmie at services in Medford, New Jersey, a week after the 22-year-old was shot to death while signing autographs in Orlando, Florida, by a man who then killed himself.

One year ago: Prosecutors in Atlanta brought murder charges against white police officer Garrett Rolfe in the fatal shooting of a Black man, Rayshard Brooks, following a struggle; a second officer, Devin Brosnan, was charged with aggravated assault and violating his oath. Quaker Oats announced that it would retire the Aunt Jemima brand, saying the company recognized that the character's origins were "based on a racial stereotype." City commissioners in Portland, Oregon, voted to cut $16 million from the police budget in response to concerns about use of force and racial injustice. Jean Kennedy Smith, the last surviving sibling of President John F. Kennedy, died at her New York home at the age of 92. Prosecutors in Los Angeles said actor Danny Masterson of "That '70s Show" was arrested and charged with raping three women in the early 2000s; the actor has denied the charges.
