If you're a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc., today's your day.

According to information from the Library of Congress, the first official national celebration of Father's Day was in 1966, when a public law was inacted for that year only. Finally, in 1972, a public law was enacted declaring that the third Sunday in June of every year would be designated as Father's Day.

It appears that people were celebrating Father's Day prior to 1966, however. In a 2017 blog, Danna Bell, an educational resource specialist at the Library of Congress, noted that a Dec. 27, 1918, article in the Idaho Republican told of the Army and Navy designating a Father's Day for soldiers to write home to their fathers. In this case, Nov. 24 was designated as Father's Day, the article reported.

But how did Father's Day begin? Bell found two original stories concerning the beginnings of Father's Day. The more often cited of the two tells of Sonora Dodd's efforts.

"Motivated by a sermon about the creation of Mother’s Day and looking for a way to honor her father, who raised her and her five siblings alone after the death of her mother, Dodd worked to establish a celebration of fathers," Bell wrote.

Called the Mother of Father's Day, Dodd suggested that her home city of Spokane, Wash., set aside a day to honor fathers. Her efforts were met favorably and the city successfully celebrated Father's Day in 1910.

The other story Bell discovered came from three years earlier. After a devastating explosion destroyed much of the Monongah Mine in West Virginia on Dec. 6, 1907, Grace Golden Clayton, who was mourning the loss of her father in the disaster, "suggested to her minister that one day be set aside to honor fathers, especially those fathers lost in the disaster," Bell noted.

Regardless of how Father's Day originated, the holiday continues to serve as a time to remember fathers who are no longer with us and to celebrate those who are. Enjoy your day, gentlemen!

UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watch has expired

OTTAWA COUNTY—A Salina man was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Saturday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by David L. Brees, 55, was north bound on U.S. 81 two miles south of Kansas 18 in the passing lane.&nbsp;

The car crossed over the center line, traveled off the roadway to the right, struck a delineator post, traveled through the ditch, struck another delineator post and came to rest in the east ditch.

EMS transported Brees to Salina Regional Health Center. He was&nbsp; properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

HOPE - A minor earthquake struck north-northeast of Hope late Saturday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.0 magnitude temblor struck at 11:43 a.m. It was centered just north of 1100 Avenue between Paint Road and Quail Road.

A cold front will push southward in the afternoon with scattered storms possible for locations mainly south and east of the cold front. A few strong to severe storms are possible.

The annual PUMP Up The Volume Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. June 28-29 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 30 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue. The blood drive is sponsored by Eagle Radio and its entities: 99 KG, 94.5 Prime FM, KINA, and Salina Post.

Radio listeners are challenged to donate during the three-day drive and vote for their favorite participating radio station. The winning station receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

Since 2010, the Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive has raised more than 4,125 donations, according to information from the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 234 donations.

The Red Cross continues to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 as each month roughly 1,000 drives are canceled, impacting the collection of approximately 30,000 units of lifesaving blood.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society reported that many patient visits and procedures were forced to be delayed or canceled early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. According to the American Cancer Society, while cancer deaths dropped at the onset of the pandemic, those rates will likely increase in the months and years to come due to delays in diagnosis and treatment

This June, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time. Many cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, will likely have a need for blood products. When donors give blood or platelets to the Red Cross, they’re helping cancer patients receive the care they need.

For many Black Americans, Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. For many white Americans, last year’s protests over police brutality drove awareness of Juneteenth’s significance. For all Americans, Juneteenth is an opportunity to remember that our rights — including our First Amendment freedoms — are only guaranteed when we can all exercise them.

The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863, but that news did not travel to the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, until June 19, 1865, making them among the last to be freed.

Seven-year-old&nbsp;Molly Harrell, who was enslaved on a plantation more than 200 miles north of Galveston, recalled the moment, saying, “Me and my mother left right off … we all walked down the road singing and shouting.”

For many African Americans, this would be the beginning of the fight to exercise their new freedom. Even with new constitutional protections, Black Americans faced obstacles to practicing their freedoms in everyday life. Many white people refused to accept Black people as their equals. The most hateful began a campaign of terror, attacking and killing Black people. Defying these threats, Black Texans observed the first anniversary of Juneteenth.

Celebrating it each year became an act of resistance and a show of strength despite continued segregation and threats of violence. During the 1950s and ’60s, Black activists connected their fight for equal rights to the fight to end slavery. Juneteenth embodied all of the pain and triumph of their shared experience.

In 1980, Texas declared Juneteenth a state holiday. Since then, 47 states have recognized it as a holiday or day of observance, and it will now become a federal holiday as well. Celebrations feature parades and fireworks, street fairs and rodeos, and presentations about Black heritage. Some people think of Juneteenth as America’s second Independence Day. The Fourth of July commemorates when white Americans gained independence, while Juneteenth is the recognition of when all Americans became free.

Today, Juneteenth reminds us that we must continue to fight for those whose rights are being infringed upon daily. Celebrating Juneteenth reminds us that freedom and equality for everyone are values we can all get behind.

1ST 5: Juneteenth reminds, freedoms only guaranteed when all can use them

Today is Saturday, June 19, the 170th day of 2021. There are 195 days left in the year. 

On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War was over, and that all remaining slaves in Texas were free — an event celebrated to this day as "Juneteenth." 

In 1775, George Washington was commissioned by the Continental Congress as commander in chief of the Continental Army. 

In 1911, Pennsylvania became the first state to establish a motion picture censorship board.

In 1917, during World War I, King George V ordered the British royal family to dispense with German titles and surnames; the family took the name "Windsor." 

In 1944, during World War II, the two-day Battle of the Philippine Sea began, resulting in a decisive victory for the Americans over the Japanese. 

In 1945, millions of New Yorkers turned out to cheer Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was honored with a parade. 

In 1953, Julius Rosenberg, 35, and his wife, Ethel, 37, convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviet Union, were executed at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York. 

In 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was approved by the U.S. Senate, 73-27, after surviving a lengthy filibuster. 

In 1975, former Chicago organized crime boss Sam Giancana was shot to death in the basement of his home in Oak Park, Illinois; the killing has never been solved. 

In 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law requiring any public school teaching the theory of evolution to teach creation science as well. 

In 2009, Texas billionaire R. Allen Stanford was indicted and jailed on charges his international banking empire was really just a Ponzi scheme built on lies, bluster and bribery. (Stanford was sentenced to 110 years in prison after being convicted of bilking investors in a $7.2 billion scheme that involved the sale of fraudulent certificates of deposits.) 

In 2013, actor James Gandolfini, 51, died while vacationing in Rome. 

In 2014, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California won election as House majority leader as Republicans shuffled their leadership in the wake of Rep. Eric Cantor's primary defeat in Virginia.

Ten years ago: Libya's government said NATO warplanes had struck a residential neighborhood in the capital and killed nine civilians, including two children; NATO confirmed hours later that one of its airstrikes had gone astray. Rory McIlroy ran away with the U.S. Open title, winning by eight shots and breaking the tournament scoring record by a whopping four strokes. (McIlroy shot 2-under 69 to close the four days at Congressional in Bethesda, Maryland, at 16-under 268.)

Five years ago: LeBron James and his relentless Cavaliers pulled off an improbable NBA Finals comeback to give the city of Cleveland its first title since 1964 as they became the first team to rally from a 3-1 finals deficit by beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 93-89. Anton Yelchin, a rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new "Star Trek" films, was killed by his own car as it rolled down his driveway in Los Angeles; he was 27.

One year ago: Americans marked Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, with new urgency and protests demanding racial justice. Demonstrators across the country defaced and toppled statues and busts of former U.S. presidents, a Spanish missionary and Confederate figures. The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, said Brett Hankison, one of the three police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, would be fired. A day before President Donald Trump's indoor rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the state reported its second-biggest daily increase in its coronavirus case load. The top U.S. Navy officer concluded that the two senior commanders on the USS Theodore Roosevelt didn't "do enough, soon enough" to stem the coronavirus outbreak on the aircraft carrier; the finding upheld the firing of the ship's captain, Brett Crozier, over his plea for faster action to protect the crew. British actor Ian Holm, whose career included roles in "Chariots of Fire" and "The Lord of the Rings," died at 88.

What are the sweet spots on the list for Salina and Abilene?

The City of Salina has announced that work continues at the intersection of Centennial Road and Arnold Avenue. 

Centennial Road will be closed to through traffic North of Wall Street and South of Schilling Road. Arnold Avenue will be closed to all traffic east of Scanlan Ave.

Passengers needing to reach the Salina Airport terminal and surrounding businesses will have access via Arnold Avenue from Schilling Road from the north and Scanlan Ave from the south.

Weather permitting, the intersection will be opened by June 28.

Tyler Paulson, 35, of Salina, was southbound on Quincy Street in a 2008 Ford F150. Paulson stopped at the stop sign before turning left, but failed to see an eastbound 2004 Harley-Davidson Sportster driven by Dennis Marlow, 59, of Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. The pickup struck the motorcycle.

Marlow received scrapes on his left arm, back, and left leg, however he was not transported to the hospital, Forrester said. 

The motorcycle sustained rear-end damage and the pickup sustained front-end damage, but was able to be driven away.

Forrester said Paulson was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way.

Pickup driver cited after hitting motorcyclist

A Salina man was arrested in connection to two business burglaries Thursday.

An officer was sent to the property being renovated for The Original Grande, 1019 E. Crawford Street on Thursday for the report of a burglary, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. A representative of JRI Commercial Properties told police that someone had busted in the temporary plywood door and taken several items. Those items included a worksite radio and two safety harnesses, Forrester said.

The reporting party also told police that someone had broken into the Freddy's Frozen Custard &amp; Steakburgers that is being constructed at 916 E. Crawford Street. Copper wire was ripped out and whoever was there injured himself as blood was found at that location, Forrester said.

The officer checked a neighboring business that had video surveillance of the area and found that at approximately 3 a.m. Thursday a male wearing a backpack, hat, and shorts was seen stuffing the stolen radio into a black trash bag, Forrester said. The officer recognized the individual, who was identified as Merelyn Hendricks, 57, of Salina.

At approximately 11 a.m. Thursday, that same officer located Hendricks in front of the Verizon store at 1200 E. Crawford Street. Hendricks was in possession of the black trash bag and the worksite radio, Forrester said. When Hendricks was searched, a personal use amount of marijuana was found, Forrester added.

Hendricks was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

Two counts of criminal damage to property

The total of the items stolen and the damage done was just under $1,000, Forrester said. The items were returned to their rightful owner.

According to the Riley Police Department activity report, a 2003 Harley David motorcycle driven by 71-year-old Dennis Rhoden of Solomon was westbound near the intersection of&nbsp;Anderson Avenue and Woodland Street in Manhattan.

The motorcycle&nbsp;swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid a car turning at the intersection. 

EMS transported Rhoden to Via Christi in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet, according to police spokesman Aaron Wintermote.&nbsp;

Solomon  man in critical condition after motorcycle accident

ABILENE - Thanks to a Google Alert, a group of citizens are trying to bring a historic set of longhorns back to Abilene.

“I received a Google Alert for Abilene, Kansas and was surprised to see an auction for a carved bull head and longhorns from Ben Thompson’s Bulls Head Saloon,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene CVB Director.&nbsp;

The hand-carved wooden bull head has real horns and a special place in wild west history. The piece consists of a 40-inch horn spread, and is 30 inches tall, and 21 inches deep. It originally hung in Abilene’s Bulls Head Saloon that belonged to notable Old West personality “Shotgun Ben Thompson.”

The authenticity of the longhorns has been substantiated by the Kansas State Historical Society and a notarized letter attesting to its history from noted collected Jack Glover accompanies the piece.

According to Abilene Historian, Michael Hook, the Bulls Head Saloon was one of the most famous saloons in Old West lore. The Bull's Head was brought to attention by the townsfolk after a racy mural was painted on the side of the saloon. The public outrage led marshal Wild Bill Hickok to the saloon asking the owners to alter the questionable area, but owners Phil Coe and Ben Thompson refused. Wild Bill altered it himself and thus started a rivalry between the two owners for the next few months.

In October, 150 years ago, Wild Bill killed Phil Coe outside of the Alamo Saloon. He also accidentally shot and killed a young lawman, Mike Williams. This is considered Wild Bill’s last gunfight.&nbsp;

Community members are being asked to donate to a special Old Abilene Town – longhorn fund at the Community Foundation of Dickinson County to help bid to bring back this important piece of history to Abilene. According to Brian Lebel’s Old West Auction, the piece is valued at $6,000-$8,000.&nbsp;

The live auction will take place June 26. Community member John Kollhoff has agreed to be the community’s bidder.

If successful, the donors will then help find a suitable and safe place to display the longhorns. If unsuccessful, the donors will work together to identify another project for their collective donation.

Donations must be received by June 25, and are considered charitable contributions. To date, almost $4,000 has been raised to bring the longhorns home.

With high temperatures forecast to be in triple digits again on Friday in much of Kansas, heat advisories have been issued for a number of counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a heat advisory in effect until 7 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

Overnight lows will only drop into the 75- to 80-degree range. Heat indices on Friday afternoon will range between 103 to 106 degrees.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.
