Motorcycle stolen overnight on W. Jewell Avenue

Police are looking for the person or persons who broke the glass on the front doors to the Stiefel Theatre over the weekend.

Sometime between 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, someone broke the glass on the front doors of the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. An employee of Martinelli's, located across the street from the Stiefel Theatre, noticed the damage and reported it to police.

Nothing appeared to be missing inside, he said. Damage was estimated at $600.

Glass on Stiefel Theatre front doors broken

BAVARIA - A Bavaria man was arrested early Sunday morning on multiple requested charges that included aggravated assault, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and domestic battery in connection to an incident at his residence.

Deputies were sent to the 2300 block of S. Midland Road in Bavaria for the report of a disturbance that included shots fired between midnight and 3 a.m. Sunday, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

Deputies interviewed several people who had been at a party at the residence. Melander said there were multiple victims in the case, including a 36-year-old woman who witnesses said had been pistol whipped. She suffered facial injuries. Other victims included a 29-year-old woman, a 28-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, and two juveniles.

Ryan Will, 44, of Bavaria, was arrested on the following requested charges, Melander said.

Two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

A search of Will's residence uncovered two large caliber handguns that had been involved in the incident, Melander said. Multiple witnesses said that the guns had been fired into the ground.

Alcohol may have played a part in the incident, Melander added.

Bavaria man arrested on multiple charges after incident at his residence

A Salina woman was injured Friday afternoon when another vehicle rear-ended the SUV she was driving.

Chelsie Spohn, 25, of Salina, was stopped in traffic in an eastbound lane on E. Crawford Street when the 2014 GMC Acadia she was driving was rear-ended by a 2015 Honda CRV driven by Brenda Stevens, 56, of Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. Stevens told police that something caught her attention and she looked away briefly and did not see the stopped Acadia until it was too late, Forrester said.

Spohn suffered neck pain and a possible concussion and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, he said.

The CRV sustained major front end damage, while the Acadia sustained rear-end damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Stevens was cited for inattentive driving, Forrester said.

Library announces summer lunch menu for the week

Effective July 1, 2021, OCCK, Inc., will be providing all general public transportation within the city limits of Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This service has been provided by the Concordia Senior Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This new venture, called GoConcordia, will be a joint partnership between OCCK, Inc., the Concordia Senior Center, and the Kansas Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

“The Board of Directors of the Concordia Senior Center is pleased to announce the transfer of the Public Transportation system to the very capable hands of OCCK, Inc.,” said Nancy Reynolds, board secretary.&nbsp;&nbsp;“For decades, the Senior Center has provided transportation to all age groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;It has been our pleasure to serve the Concordia community in this capacity.”&nbsp;

OCCK’s Transportation Department will continue the same great service that has been provided by the Senior Center. OCCK plans to employ the same friendly drivers, using the same vehicles.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fares will remain consistent, however for the first two weeks, all rides will be free.&nbsp;&nbsp;Regular fares will resume on July 19.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All passes will be honored.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It is an honor to continue public transportation in the city of Concordia,” said Trell Grinter, transportation director for OCCK, Inc.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We are excited to help citizens get to their destinations and continue the growth of our community.”&nbsp;

OCCK currently serves 14 counties in north central Kansas, including Cloud County, since 1970. OCCK provides about 380,000 rides per year, which continues to grow, through:&nbsp;

●CityGo—Salina’s fixed route bus system that serves more than 80 percent of the city with about 200 bus stops throughout. Operated as a partnership with OCCK, the City of Salina and the Kansas Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

●Regional Paratransit Demand Response Service—OCCK offers Regional Paratransit, origin-to-destination, on-demand service for the general public throughout North Central Kansas, including passengers with disabilities and seniors. Riders will be picked up at their address and dropped off at their destination. Counties served include Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Marion, McPherson, Osborne, Ottawa, Republic, Saline and Smith.&nbsp;&nbsp;

●Med-A-Van Service—Non-emergency medical transportation to and from Salina Regional Health Center and its affiliates in fourteen counties in north central Kansas. This service is financially supported by the Salina Regional Health Foundation.&nbsp;

●Non Emergency Medical Transportation—OCCK contracts with KanCare providers to provide non-emergency medical transportation throughout Kansas. However only Medicaid recipient passengers are eligible for this service.&nbsp;

●81 Connection—the newest transportation service. This fixed route bus service runs three roundtrips each day from Belleville to Salina, with stops along Highway 81/135. A partnership between OCCK, the Kansas Department of Transportation, Ottawa County Transportation and Solomon Valley Transportation.&nbsp;

●KANcycle&nbsp;–&nbsp;regional rural bike sharing with 80 bikes and 16 stations in eight communities in north central Kansas through the Movatic app.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stations can be found in Salina, Minneapolis, Concordia, Belleville, Mankato, Beloit, Lincoln, and Ellsworth.&nbsp;&nbsp;Riders join the program by signing up for annual memberships or pay as you go.&nbsp;&nbsp;Annual memberships are $30 with trips under one hour being free.&nbsp;&nbsp;Student annual members are $20.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pay-as-you-go is $1.50 for every 30 minutes&nbsp;

OCCK to launch GoConcordia public transportation July 1

UNESCO just released its Science Report on June 11, monitoring the advancements that have been made by countries around the world approximately every five years. This was the seventh edition, the prior report having been issued in 2015.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Subtitled “The race against time for smarter development,” the report focuses on investment in advanced technology, innovation and ecological changes.&nbsp; The report is written in sections, but the country standing out is China where it found “44% of growth in global research spending between 2014 and 2018 driven by China alone.”

There has been a diminishing return on research and development (R&amp;D) spending. Countries are spending more on R&amp;D but achieving fewer research papers and patents per dollar. “China is no exception, suggesting it may take time for Chinese investment in R&amp;D to translate into productivity gains.”

Having brought a huge number of its population out of poverty, China is now in a “middle income trap.” It is pursuing a “Made in China” policy to “help ten strategic industries to reduce China’s reliance on foreign technologies” such as chip makers in Taiwan and South Korea.

China is several years ahead of the rest of the world in 5G technology (Huawei) and 5G-enabled voice-over for mobile phones (ZTE and Qualcomm). Chinese companies have also acquired Syngenta (a Swiss agrochemical giant) and Kuka, Germany’s largest developer of industrial robots.

Much of this report was compiled by Cong Cao, professor at University of Nottingham in Ningbo,&nbsp; who describes how China’s current research priorities in Artificial Intelligence, brain research, image recognition, space exploration and quantum computing are not likely to contribute as much to China’s overall industrial development. However, “China’s own strategic industries expect better government protection of their intellectual property, including through stricter enforcement. Consequently, the Anti-Unfair Competition Law was amended in April 2019 and the Patent Law in 2020 to offer better protection for trade secrets and patent-owners’ rights, respectively.”&nbsp; China overtook the United States as the world's top filer of international patents in 2019 and has since increased its lead.

The UNESCO report found that “China doubled gross domestic expenditure on research and development between 2012 and 2019 to more than 2.2 trillion RMB. This corresponds to 2.23% of GDP,” but falls short of their national target of 2.5% by 2020. This was less than the U.S. 3.1% in 2019 but surpasses the European percentage. China’s research publications are likewise greatest in number, having surpassed the U.S. in 2017, but continue to be more focused on applied problems such as greenhouse gas emission, agricultural production, hydropower, and freshwater sourcing.&nbsp; &nbsp;

China’s higher education continues to expand, with about half of graduates majoring in STEM, second only to Singapore. Over time, far more outbound Chinese students are returning to China after completing their masters or doctoral studies. “China’s booming economy is attracting a growing number of returnees who are staffing universities, research institutes and enterprises.”

More universities are being built, while higher education in the U.S. has seen a recent downturn in undergraduates. Leading Chinese universities are now moving up on the Times Higher Education 2020 World University Ranking, with Tsinghua and Peking Universities rising while some U.S. higher education institutions that previously dominated these rankings are now falling.

Among their most successful efforts is China’s work in Artificial Intelligence, where “papers published by Chinese scientists increased from 4.3% in 1997 to 27.7% of the global total in 2017, far outstripping other countries.”

The vast amount of research published worldwide is published in science journals where new discoveries and concepts are made available to all researchers to advance the field worldwide. The extent new science is incorporated into technology, manufacturing and healthcare then determines a country’s growth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: UNESCO Science Report

Firearms will be the topic of the next Community Health Seminar.

The seminar is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday in the second floor meeting room of the Ashby House Central Office, 142 S. Seventh Street.

Commander Bill Cooke from the Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad is scheduled to lead the discussion that will include the following subjects.

Cooke has been an NRA Basic Pistol and Kansas Conceal Carry instructor for more than five years.

Participants are encouraged to take donations for Ashby House with them to the seminar.

The American Red Cross wants you to PUMP Up The Volume!

The annual PUMP Up The Volume Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. June 28-29 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 30 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue. The blood drive is sponsored by Eagle Radio and its entities: 99 KG, 94.5 Prime FM, KINA, and Salina Post.

Radio listeners are challenged to donate during the three-day drive and vote for their favorite participating radio station. The winning station receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

Since 2010, the Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive has raised more than 4,125 donations, according to information from the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 234 donations.

The Red Cross continues to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 as each month roughly 1,000 drives are canceled, impacting the collection of approximately 30,000 units of lifesaving blood.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society reported that many patient visits and procedures were forced to be delayed or canceled early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. According to the American Cancer Society, while cancer deaths dropped at the onset of the pandemic, those rates will likely increase in the months and years to come due to delays in diagnosis and treatment

This June, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time. Many cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, will likely have a need for blood products. When donors give blood or platelets to the Red Cross, they’re helping cancer patients receive the care they need.

GLOSSY • BRIGHT • COLORFUL, photographs by George Jerkovich, is scheduled to open Wednesday at Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue. The art center is open to the public at no charge. An opening reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday at the art center.

Summer hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m.–7 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. GLOSSY • BRIGHT • COLORFUL is scheduled to be in the South Gallery Wednesday through Aug. 1, 2021. Additionally, it is scheduled to be available for evening viewing during the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular, July 22-25.

Jerkovich said that color and form are the two most important aspects of his work. This exhibition includes a broad spectrum of warm colors, which he favors over cool ones, with the metal substrate rendering them “glossy, bright, colorful.”

Jerkovich is a noted regional photographer. He regularly participates in area exhibits, and his work is represented in many corporate and private collections. 

Normally a landscape photographer, Jerkovich admits that he is “not a car guy” but that he does admire the color, form, and craft of restored cars. In his photography, the process is just as important to him as the final image.

McPherson's Goss earns academic honors at Missouri State

MANHATTAN — With high temperatures scorching much of the country, a Kansas State University veterinarian is reminding pet owners that dogs, with that layer of fur, are susceptible to the heat. As the summer heat index rises, the risk for dehydrated and overheated dogs does the same, said Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the university's&nbsp;<a href="http://www.vet.k-state.edu/vhc/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>. Nelson said it's important to recognize the signs of heatstroke in your pet and know what you can do to prevent it from becoming a problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when temperatures outside range from 80 to 100 degrees, the temperature inside a car parked in direct sunlight can quickly climb to between 130 to 172 degrees. That means it's best to leave pets at home when running errands, Nelson said. "Even with the windows cracked, we should never leave our pets in a vehicle unattended," Nelson said. "For what might seem like a short trip into the bank, it can end up being fatal for our pets." To prevent heatstroke in your pets, Nelson said to keep in mind the time of day you take them outside for walks or runs. She recommends taking them out in the cooler morning or later evening hours. "Even if they have never had a problem with heat before, watch for signs of lagging behind, thick saliva and dark mucus membranes," Nelson said. These are all indications your dog might be starting to get heat stress." The following are some of the symptoms Nelson said to watch for when trying to detect heatstroke in your dog: • Body temperature above 103 degrees. • Excessive or vigorous panting. • Dark red, blue or purple gums. • Thick saliva and excessive drooling. • Dizziness or disorientation. • Restlessness or appearing distressed. • Rapid heart rate or irregular heartbeat. • Vomiting or urinating blood, or traces of blood in bowel movements. • Seizures and muscle tremors. • Lying down and unwilling or unable to get up. • Collapse or loss of consciousness where the animal cannot be awakened. If you think your dog is starting to become overheated, move it to a shaded area and offer cool water to drink until the dog has cooled down, Nelson said. Food should be changed a minimum of twice daily, as it spoils quickly in warm weather and flies are attracted to food that is left out, she said. If left outside, your pets should have access to shade any time of the day, so be sure to check periodically throughout the day to ensure shade is available. If you don’t have any trees, etc., you can hang a tarp to create shade for them.&nbsp;

 </figure>MANHATTAN — With high temperatures scorching much of the country, a Kansas State University veterinarian is reminding pet owners that dogs, with that layer of fur, are susceptible to the heat. As the summer heat index rises, the risk for dehydrated and overheated dogs does the same, said Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the university's&nbsp;<a href="http://www.vet.k-state.edu/vhc/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>. Nelson said it's important to recognize the signs of heatstroke in your pet and know what you can do to prevent it from becoming a problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when temperatures outside range from 80 to 100 degrees, the temperature inside a car parked in direct sunlight can quickly climb to between 130 to 172 degrees. That means it's best to leave pets at home when running errands, Nelson said. "Even with the windows cracked, we should never leave our pets in a vehicle unattended," Nelson said. "For what might seem like a short trip into the bank, it can end up being fatal for our pets." To prevent heatstroke in your pets, Nelson said to keep in mind the time of day you take them outside for walks or runs. She recommends taking them out in the cooler morning or later evening hours. "Even if they have never had a problem with heat before, watch for signs of lagging behind, thick saliva and dark mucus membranes," Nelson said. These are all indications your dog might be starting to get heat stress." The following are some of the symptoms Nelson said to watch for when trying to detect heatstroke in your dog: • Body temperature above 103 degrees. • Excessive or vigorous panting. • Dark red, blue or purple gums. • Thick saliva and excessive drooling. • Dizziness or disorientation. • Restlessness or appearing distressed. • Rapid heart rate or irregular heartbeat. • Vomiting or urinating blood, or traces of blood in bowel movements. • Seizures and muscle tremors. • Lying down and unwilling or unable to get up. • Collapse or loss of consciousness where the animal cannot be awakened. If you think your dog is starting to become overheated, move it to a shaded area and offer cool water to drink until the dog has cooled down, Nelson said. ●Responsible for managing Dum back/Regrind/Reblend product movement.

●Supports packaging lines with staging of resources needed based on the production schedule including hand stacking of all bag sizes.
