Heat index values 104 to 107 are expected.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 106 are expected.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued an excessive heat warning in effect until 9 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 103 to 110. This will be the fourth consecutive day of excessive heat for the area.

Make sure to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities. Make sure pets have shade and plenty of water. Or better yet, bring them inside. Remember: at these temperatures, pavement can burn pets' feet.

NWS: Dangerous heat going into the weekend; stay hydrated!

On July 11, Salina Police took a forgery report from a Salina resident. 

This resident reported his/her personal checks were used in Emporia and Salina.

An investigation revealed one of the victim’s checks was used at Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street on July 1 at 1:55 p.m. The video showed the person involved was a white female, 20-30 years of age, wearing a dark-colored Nike hoodie, shorts, white shoes, and brown hair.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about forgery case

My fiancée and I want to make an offer on a house. She has a lot of late payments and a bad credit record, though, but she is working hard to manage her money better and get out of debt. I don’t make enough money to get a home loan by myself, and I have some debt to pay off, too. In order to help us out, my aunt and uncle said they are willing to co-sign a mortgage loan for us. What do you think of that idea?

Here’s a simple, solid piece of advice for anyone looking to make a purchase of any kind. If you need a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/the-secret-alliance-colleges-and-credit-cards" target="_blank">co-signer</a>, you’re not ready to make that purchase—period. I’m not trying to beat you up or anything, but it’s way too soon for you two to be thinking about buying a home. I mean, for starters you’re just engaged right now.

When a lender requires a co-signer, it basically means they don’t believe you’ll pay back the money. And besides, you two don’t need a house now&nbsp;or&nbsp;right after you get married. The two of you should get married, and live in a decent, inexpensive apartment for a while. During that time, you both need to work hard on paying off all your debt. After that, save up an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/saving/quick-guide-to-your-emergency-fund" target="_blank">emergency fund</a>&nbsp;of three to six months of expenses. Then, start setting aside cash for a down payment on a modest home.

When it comes time to buy a home, I recommend a 15-year, fixed rate loan with a down payment of at least 10%. Twenty percent is better, because it will help you avoid having to pay&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/real-estate/what-is-pmi-private-mortgage-insurance" target="_blank">PMI</a>&nbsp;(private mortgage insurance). Make sure the monthly payments on the loan are no more than 25% of your combined take home pay. Keeping the payments at 25% or below will make it easier to address other important financial issues, like saving and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/investment-calculator" target="_blank">investing</a>.

UPDATE: 3 more earthquakes, one a 3.6, rattle parts of Jewell County

CLOUD COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has arrested two individuals after an investigation into former employees of the Cloud County Jail.

Just after 8:35 a.m., Thursday Amber Lindberg, 40, of Concordia, was arrested at 212 N. Concord in Minneapolis, according to a media release from the KBI.

 She was arrested on a requested charge of theft, misuse of public funds, official misconduct, making false information, conspiracy to commit theft, conspiracy to commit official misconduct, conspiracy to commit misuse of public funds, and conspiracy to commit destroying a written instrument. 

Lindberg was the Cloud County jail administrator in June 2019 when the KBI initiated the investigation. Following her arrest, Lindberg was booked into the Saline County Jail.

Joyce Jasper, 62, of Concordia, was arrested for theft at 11th&nbsp;and State Street in Concordia. The arrest occurred at 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday. Jasper is Lindberg’s mother. She was booked into the Cloud County Jail.

The Lincoln County Attorney was appointed as the special prosecutor and is expected to prosecute the case.

The investigation is ongoing. Additional arrests are expected.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

According to the weather service, smoke and areas of haze are expected Friday and Friday evening for much of south central Nebraska, with some smoky haze possible for&nbsp; north-central Kansas.

Those with health conditions sensitive to air quality should reduce prolonged outdoor activity. Should air conditions worsen, prolonged or heavy exertion should be avoided by those susceptible to air quality issues. Others may want to consider the impacts of the expected poor air quality when planning and participating in outdoor activities and adjust as necessary.

Increasing wildfire smoke prompts special weather statement

If you've driven by the law enforcement center recently, you may have noticed a large boom truck in the parking lot.

After pouring the base a couple of weeks ago, workers on Wednesday began erecting a communication tower as a part of the city and county emergency communication project. 

The tower is located at the southeast corner of the Salina Municipal Court part of the complex on N. 10th Street.

The tower is similar to the one at Salina Fire Station No. 3, 2633 Belmont Boulevard, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Salina Women's Fair seeks home-based vendors

A trailer loaded with ATVs, a go-cart, and a sprayer that was stolen early Tuesday morning from a north Salina storage facility has been recovered, thanks to an alert police officer.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that the $2,500 trailer and its $5,800 worth of equipment was found across town in a storage unit in the 2100 block of Centennial Road.

Surveillance video showed that at approximately 6 a.m. Tuesday, a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup pulled into the Citywide Storage parking lot and hooked onto the 18-foot Finish Line trailer loaded with a gray Kawasaki ATV, a green Arctic Cat ATV, a gray go-cart with roll cage, and a red-framed three-point sprayer. The pickup and trailer were then seen going north on N. Ohio Street.

The trailer and items on it were the property of Mark Augustine, 56, of Salina, Forrester said.

On Wednesday, officers were sent to the area of Norton Street and Albert Avenue for the report of a disturbance. While searching the area, one officer saw a pickup that matched the description of the pickup involved in the theft at Citywide Storage. The pickup, which the officer recognized as belonging to someone he had dealt with before, was at the apartment complex at 821 E. Wayne Ave.

Officers contacted the registered owner of the pickup, Ryan Ollenburger, 39, of Salina, who told them the trailer was in his storage unit in the 2100 block of Centennial Road, Forrester said.

Ollenburger was arrested on a requested charge of felony theft, Forrester said.

Police recover stolen trailer and other items, arrest Salina man

Two people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident in south Salina.

Patricia Persell, 84, of Salina, was northbound on S. Ohio Street in a 2012 GMC Terrain when she attempted to turn left onto Albert Avenue and was struck by a southbound 2014 Honda Odyssey driven by Shirley Davis, 77, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

The impact of the collision forced the Odyssey over the curb on the southwest corner of the intersection, where it took out a street sign and a vent tube belonging to the City of Salina, Forrester said.

Persell complained of minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. Davis also suffered minor injuries, but was not transported. Davis had an 81-year-old male passenger who was not injured.

The Terrain sustained major front-end damage and the Odyssey also had front-end damage, Forrester said. Both were towed from the scene.

Both women told police that they had a green light, Forrester said. There were no witnesses to verify who had a green light, so police are checking surveillance video in the area to try to determine who was at fault in the accident.

Blazing temperatures continue; advisories remain in place

The Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair is seeking parade entries.&nbsp;

Parade applications must be returned by Sept.&nbsp;3,&nbsp;in order to participate.&nbsp;There is no entry fee.

This year’s Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair Parade will feature the theme,&nbsp;Salina's Old West,&nbsp;to support a brand new look to the Street Fair. Decorated parade entries are highly encouraged.

On Sept. 25, the parade entry sign‐in will begin at 9 a.m. Participants must be signed in and in place by 9:45 a.m. The parade will begin promptly at 10 a.m.

The parade route will be on Santa Fe Avenue, between Elm Street and The Temple. 

An information packet will be sent to everyone who enters by the deadline.

City issues new waste cart removal update

CKF Addiction Treatment has announced that it has signed on with Kansas Medicaid managed care organizations – Aetna Better Health of Kansas, Sunflower Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare – to pilot a new telehealth treatment model. 

This model will create a partnership with primary care providers across the state of Kansas.

CKF created this program to enhance identification and engagement of patients with the chronic disease of addiction. It optimizes touch points within health care and connects treatment options to patients with this chronic disease.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on Kansans’ struggles to access addiction treatment,” said Shane Hudson, CKF president and CEO. “CKF is uniquely positioned to fill a critical need for those who need treatment options.”

Using this program, CKF will help our partner sites to set up screening and referral to treatment protocols within their facilities. These actions will help identify patients who may need addiction health care services.

Once identified, CKF Addiction Treatment will be able to integrate within the workflow of our partner sites through video conferencing software. This will allow CKF to assess and provide telehealth treatment options to patients from the comfort of the patients’ own homes.

“It’s imperative that access to addiction treatment is available when our members are ready to seek it,” said Dr. William Warnes, Sunflower medical director. “We’re pleased to support CKF’s program and confident that it will make a difference for our members and other Kansans who are looking for recovery and improved health.”

Patients who need addiction health care also will be able to access all outpatient services remotely.

Facilitated by both licensed counselors and certified peer mentors, this model is an efficient and effective way to provide quality addiction treatment across the state.

“We understand that rising rates of loneliness and social isolation take a toll on the health and wellbeing of our members, especially those who are most at-risk,” said Dr. Muna Enshiwat, chief medical officer, Aetna Better Health of Kansas. “This collaboration with CKF is timely and further strengthens our member-centered model of care.”

In addition to access and engagement, this model also provides a follow-up component that addiction health care has been lacking. Utilizing peer mentors, CKF will provide ongoing and structured services following completion of primary treatment. The peer mentors assist patients with long-term recovery and health goals, and work to establish each patient with a primary care provider for long-term management of this disease.

This model of care creates care pathways to address current gaps in care, assists medical providers in the process, and the program is designed to improve the overall health outcomes of patients with addiction.
