JEWELL COUNTY - A 3.4 magnitude earthquake shook part of Jewell County this morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the quake struck at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday southwest of Mankato.

It was centered just west of 70 Road and south of K Road.

There are no reports of damage or injury, according to the Jewell County Sheriff's Office.

The United States Geological Survey reported the quake as a 2.9 magnitude quake.

A $2,500 trailer loaded with $5,800 worth of equipment was stolen from the parking lot of a north Salina storage facility Tuesday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that surveillance video showed a black Chevrolet Silverado Z71 pull into the parking lot at Citywide Storage, 440 N. Ohio Street, and back up to the trailer. A few minutes later, the pickup and trailer exit the parking lot and headed north on N. Ohio Street.

The trailer and items on it were the property of Mark Augustine, 56, of Salina, Forrester said. 

The trailer was a black 18-foot Finish Line trailer with a Kansas license plate of 807 MLK. It was valued at $2,500, Forrester said.

Items on the trailer included the following, he said.

●A gray 2007 Kawasaki ATV valued at $2,500

●A green 2006 Arctic Cat ATV valued at $2,500

●A gray go-cart with a roll cage valued at $500

●A red-frame three-point sprayer valued at $300

Forrester said a person in the same kind of pickup was believed to have stopped by the day before and looked at the trailer.

UPDATE: Salina man out $8,300 after loaded trailer stolen Tuesday

Two portable toilets were destroyed in a fire at Bill Burke Park Monday night.

A witness who lives nearby reported the fire at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Two PolyJohn portable toilets that were between fields seven and eight at Bill Burke Park, 1501 E. Crawford, were destroyed, he said. The portable toilets belonged to Salina Septic Service, 200 E. Pacific.

The incident is being investigated as arson, Forrester said.

Officials believe that gasoline or fireworks ignited inside the portable toilets may be responsible for the fire, he said.

A friend of mine recently asked when my family truly begins to enjoy summer. She asked this well-meaning question to help her figure out when we get to enjoy some rest and relaxation during the summer months. She has observed my family for many years and has recognized that while many others enjoy vacations during this time of the year, it seems as if my family does not get the “traditional” summer experience so many others do. &nbsp; Before I met and eventually married my husband, I lived in a town where I taught. As soon as I had wrapped up my lessons for the year, cleaned my classroom and submitted my final grades, my summer break began. My summer breaks consisted of a lot of cookouts with friends and family, a lot of time in a swimming pool, and a lot of travel. I had a lot of things to do during my breaks, and I generally kept a pretty busy schedule to ensure I’d soak up all of what summer offered. Many nights I’d usually fall asleep exhausted from a busy summer day and get a good, hard sleep before rising with the sun the next morning. &nbsp; When I look at what summers were like for me as a single teacher living in a small town compared to what my summers look like now on the farm, I can’t help but recognize that some things remain the same yet appear different. During wheat harvest, I still experience meals with friends and family — although what is generally grilled at home is then packaged up and hauled out to hungry people in a wheat field somewhere. I still enjoy meals with others while sitting in our lawn chairs, albeit the scenery and timeframes may look a little different. &nbsp; My time relaxing at the pool with friends has transitioned to water time with my kids. Pool time is now generally centered around our stock tank pool that sits in our front yard. It’s quite convenient for early morning or evening dips, and you don’t have to deal with crowds or admission fees. Sometimes the kids and I enjoy a trip to a local splash pad or enjoy time at our town’s public pool. In either of these scenarios, we all enjoy a little refreshing break from the summer heat. &nbsp; I also still get to travel during the summer months. Some days include unplanned short trips to a business in a nearby town to pick up irrigation or machine parts my husband needs. Unless the items are needed immediately, I usually have the kids put on their swimsuits under their clothes and pack some towels in the event we find a new community splash pad to enjoy. If we strike out with the splash pad on our parts runs, we’ll look for community parks or interesting things like murals to explore in these other communities. Sometimes, the kids and I can also sneak away for multiple days if schedules allow. &nbsp; As the summer continues and hectic, timely tasks on the farm like wheat harvest and planting have transitioned more into an autopilot mode of things like managing irrigation. We still take advantage of the daylight hours and generally still collapse into our beds nightly well after the lightening bugs fill the air. &nbsp; As summer continues, my family can begin to stray a bit further from the farm. We can enjoy a swimming pool at a hotel or a relaxing evening cookout together at home. We, no doubt, will still collapse into bed at night after exhausting days trying to take full advantage of all that the summer days allow us to absorb. And we will begin talking about what fun family trip we can plan for and enjoy some rest and relaxation — somewhere perhaps warm and sunny — in either January or February.

AAA offers tips for avoiding car troubles

WICHITA – AAA Kansas is expecting an increase in roadside assistance calls with the soaring temperatures and summer activities in full swing.

 Car batteries will be tested by the extreme heat, and there will likely be an increase in tire troubles as well.

“Inevitably, these high temperatures will bring a wave of calls from motorists whose batteries fail,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “And, in this heat, drivers and their passengers’ safety is at risk as well, so it is critical that everyone prepare accordingly.”

“Having your vehicle serviced by professionals who are trained to identify potential problems can help prevent heat-related breakdowns and often saves money on repairs,” Steward added.&nbsp;“The best way to keep a car in top shape is to have a trusted repair shop where you can go when it’s time for service.”

A professional and thorough vehicle inspection can proactively help reduce the chance of a serious breakdown. If a car does end up at a repair shop, not only will a vacation road trip or everyday transportation be interrupted, but drivers can expect to spend anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars to get back on the road.

Take the guesswork out of finding a trusted repair facility by trusting a local AAA Approved Auto Repair (AAR) facility. These shops must adhere to a stringent set of standards for certifications, technical training, cleanliness, insurance requirements, and customer service set forth by AAA.

1. Get your battery tested and, if necessary, replace it BEFORE it dies Most batteries last 3-5 years and each day of extreme weather pushes a battery closer to its end. AAA members can request a AAA Roadside Service technician to come to them and test their battery free of charge. Should the battery need replacement, the technician can usually replace it on location.

2. Make sure tires are properly inflated Driving on under-inflated tires can cause tires to overheat and increase the likelihood of a blowout.

This problem becomes even more of a concern when road temperatures are extremely high.

For accurate results, tires should be checked at the beginning of travels before driving any great distance. They should be inflated to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer – not the number molded into the tire sidewall.

Recommended tire pressures can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker normally located on the driver’s door jamb or the inside of the glove compartment door. Some vehicles use different pressures for the front and rear tires. While checking the tire pressures - including the spare - drivers also should inspect the tire treads for adequate depth and any signs of uneven wear that might indicate a suspension or alignment problem.

3. Check all fluids When fluid levels are low, the possibility of overheating increases. Drivers should check all vehicle fluids including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid to ensure they are filled to the appropriate levels. If any fluids need to be topped off, be sure to use the type of fluid specified in the owner’s manual.

4. Have a roadside rescue plan to summon qualified help should it be needed Check to make sure your AAA membership is active and suitable for the distance you plan to travel.

5. Stock a summer emergency kit Even with proper preventive maintenance, summer breakdowns can still occur, so AAA recommends every driver have a fully charged cellphone on hand so they can call for help when needed and also keep a well-stocked emergency kit in their vehicle to ensure everyone’s safety while they’re waiting for help to arrive.

The emergency kit should include water, non-perishable food items, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, road flares or an emergency beacon, basic hand tools, and a first aid kit.&nbsp;

AAA: Excessive heat expected to burden batteries, test tires

City of Salina provides trash cart delivery update

Wreck closes southbound S. Ohio Street Tuesday

DICKINSON COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Sterling truck driven by&nbsp; Charles Rice, 50, Salina,&nbsp;was westbound on 1400 Avenue just east of Lindy. The truck traveled off the north edge of road into the north ditch and overturned. 

EMS transported Rice to the hospital in Salina. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Salina man hospitalized after truck overturns

Police are looking for a pickup that was stolen from a west Salina business during the last few days.

Ferco Rental, 264 S. Broadway, reported to police on Monday that sometime between Friday and Monday, someone stole a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado valued at $7,500, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The pickup, which has a Kansas tag of 161JUC, had been parked just to the south and west of the Ferco office.

Ferco personnel told police that the company has had several keys come up missing in the past.

Additionally, four red, steel crane stops, valued at $2,000, that were in the back of the pickup also were stolen, Forrester said.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the area.

The annual Fe For A Cure 5K Race/Walk benefiting patients undergoing treatment at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, planned for Sept. 18, has been cancelled due to concerns about COVID-19. However, cancer doesn’t stop for COVID, and local patients still need support.

“The uncertainty about COVID spread in the fall, and the fact that many of our participants are current and former cancer patients weighs heavily on our decision,” said Tom Martin, executive director of the Salina Regional Health Foundation. “Unfortunately cancer has not been canceled and local patients undergoing treatment at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center still need our support.”

Those who would like to support patients are asked to donate the amount they would have given through their entry fees – $25 for adults and $10 for children – for participating in the race. Donations of any amount are welcomed. One hundred percent of these donations are used to support local cancer patients. Checks can be mailed to the Salina Regional Health Foundation, P.O. Box 618, Salina, KS 67402-0618 or donations can be given online at FeForACure.com.

For the second year in a row, the corporate underwriters for the Fe For A Cure have allowed their gifts to be redirected to support cancer patients. This year’s underwriters are:

Fe For A Cure 5K race/walk cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns

SOLOMON - A Solomon man was killed late Monday afternoon in a two vehicle accident on E. Old Highway 40.

Jameson Holloway, 45, of Solomon, was westbound on E. Old Highway 40 just west of Solomon on a 2014 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide when an eastbound 2021 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Morris Rasher, 87, of Solomon, started to make a left turn onto N. Amos Road and turned in front of the motorcycle, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.

Holloway, was thrown from the motorcycle upon impact, Soldan said. The motorcycle was stuck in the front of the pickup, he said.

Holloway was transported to Salina Regional Health Center where he was pronounced dead. 

According to Soldan, Rasher suffered minor injuries. He was cited for failure to yield on a left turn.

Holloway was not wearing a helmet, Soldan said.

MANHATTAN – During a decade-long career in the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H Youth Development program</a>, Adelaide Easter has explored 26 project areas, exhibited at her local fair, and held every office in her local club.&nbsp;

So what does the college freshman-to-be have planned now?&nbsp;

“I plan to double major in bakery science and food science, with a double minor in business and leadership,” said Easter, a May graduate of Sacred Heart Junior/Senior High School in Salina, and a member of the Sunny Valley 4-H Club in the Central Kansas Extension District.&nbsp;

Quite ambitious, it seems, but for Easter, her college plans reflect the path she forged as a member of the Kansas 4-H program.&nbsp;

“4-H exposed me to all of these different career pathways and I found that I was really interested in bakery science and food science,” she said.&nbsp;

“Later, when I was older, after going to (local) fairs and conferences where I learned a lot of tips on how to grow as a baker, I went to Discovery Days (held each May on the Kansas State University campus) where I attended a class with a bakery science instructor and got exposed to what bakery science is. Before then, I had no idea that was even a career that you could pursue later in life.”&nbsp;

Easter described herself as “a shy girl” early in her 4-H career. “My mom had to drag me to my first 4-H meetings; I didn’t want anything to do with it,” she said. “But I slowly broke out of my shell and decided I wanted to become a leader.”&nbsp;

“Fast forward to now and I am the state president of the Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council have been on my district council and have held all of the offices in my club. I have been a leader in many areas of 4-H.”&nbsp;

Easter will attend Kansas State University in the fall. She said her involvement in 4-H and its historic connection to the university helps to smooth the transition. “I’ve been able to grow a connection with one of the bakery science instructors there, and I just found out that he’s going to be my academic advisor and will help me put together my class schedule.”&nbsp;

“I’ve been able to have a relationship with him because I’ve seen him the last 5 or 6 years at (Discovery Days) classes. He has kids in 4-H, as well, so he knows how much 4-H impacts us as we get older.”&nbsp;

Easter notes her life won’t slow down as she transitions out of the Kansas 4-H program.&nbsp;

“I still plan to be involved in leadership activities in college, as well as citizenship and doing my part of civic engagement in my community,” she said. “And I still want to be involved in music theatre as well as many other projects, because I love all the things I do, whether it is space technology, photography, horticulture or others.&nbsp;

“I love growing in all of these aspects and I still plan to do that as I get older.”&nbsp;

Easter encourages teens to stay involved in 4-H, saying high school is a busy time but – including 4-H – has lasting benefits to develop leadership skills, make connections and explore project areas that can help teens find a career pathway.&nbsp;

The Kansas 4-H program offers&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/projects" target="_blank">more than three dozen project areas</a>&nbsp;for youth to participate in. More information on opportunities offered is available at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">local extension offices in Kansas</a>.&nbsp;

This summer marks Easter’s final year in the youth development program, and her last time showing at the county fair.&nbsp;

“I’m very sad that this will be my last fair,” she said, “but I am excited for the next chapter of my life.”&nbsp;

Saline County's Easter reflects on Kansas 4-H career

The Saline County Back to School Fair is this Friday!

The fair is scheduled for noon-6 p.m. July 30 at Lakewood Middle School, according to information on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalineBTSF/">Saline County Back to School Fair</a>&nbsp;Facebook page. Participants are asked to enter from Ohio and follow the signs.

To qualify for free basic school supplies, students must be a Saline County K-8 student and must qualify for free or reduced school lunches.

In addition to the free school supplies, the following will be conducted during the fair.

Additionally,&nbsp;Salina CityGo, will be providing free rides to families attending the Back to School Fair. According to OCCK Transportation,&nbsp;the best stop to use is stop No. 41 on the Red Route (N. Ohio Crosswalk).&nbsp;

Buses will be at that stop at :46 after each hour during regular hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and at :16 each hour during peak hours (12:30-5:30 p.m.), according to information from OCCK Transportation.

ABILENE - Just like in the days of yore, Texas longhorn cattle are about to take over the streets of Abilene.

The Sander Ranch Longhorns will be part of Abilene’s&nbsp;Central Kansas Free Fair parade on Aug. 5 at 4 p.m., and will be part of the opening of the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo Aug. 4-7.

The majestic beasts will go down the parade route, and mill around the arena prior to each night of rodeo.

They are owned by Wes Sander of Woodward, Okla., who has had longhorns since 1998. A Woodward, Okla., rodeo committee member, Sander wanted a way to promote the rodeo. He bought 50 head of longhorn steers broke to drive. He used them in a cattle drive with&nbsp;great success, garnering publicity from across the state. They “were a huge hit,” he said.

Sander will bring between 25-40 steers to Abilene. He’s in his fourth generation of steers, with the average animal living between 12 and 15 years. They weigh about 1,200&nbsp;lbs. at&nbsp;maturity with a horn span from five to eight feet across.

“Driving” cattle means moving them from one place to another, usually with cowboys on horseback. A young steer learns how to be driven, and Sander tries out the young ones each year when he drives the herd from his ranch to Woodward, Okla. The ones that don’t follow along or get out of line have no place in his herd, so he sells them.

The steers have a good life, he said. “All they have to do is behave themselves, look pretty, and don’t act dumb.” They aren’t as stupid as people might think, he says. They remember the routes at different rodeos, from where their pens are to the rodeo arena. He’s taken the steers to countless rodeos and western events, from Greeley, Colo., to Dallas, Texas; from a Dodge automotive show in Detroit to Omaha, Neb.

There’s always a lead steer, Sander said, one that is the dominant animal and leads the way. In the old days of cattle drives, lead steers would lead the herd from Texas to the railheads in Kansas. The lead steer wasn’t sold with the rest of the herd; he was taken back to Texas, to lead the next herd north. Sander has two lead steers: JB and 911. The herd is sometimes at two different events on the same days, so the leads split up to go two different ways.

He and his son, Cody, and wife, Jill, help out with the herd. Cody will cowboy, driving the herd, or take them to one event while Wes is at another.

The longhorns are easy keepers, he said. 

“They’re not babied. They take care of themselves. They are very tough, very resilient, very smart animals. Smarter than people. I don’t worry about the steers,” he said.

The 75th&nbsp;&nbsp;Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo will be held Aug. 4-7 in conjunction with the Central Kansas Free Fair in Abilene. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. each night.
