Angie Eilrich began her banking career at First Bank Kansas in 1981.In the last 40 years, Eilrich has held various positions at the bank in the areas of teller operations, bookkeeping, compliance, audit, human resources, marketing, information technology, product development, project management, and training. 

In January of 2011, Eilrich was named executive vice president and chief operations officer of First Bank Kansas. Most recently, Eilrich was elected to the board in January.

When asked what her fondest memory has been during her 40 years at First Bank Kansas, Eilrich said, “There is no one memory, but everyone I have come in contact with has made an impact on my life, and for that, I am grateful for.” 

When not at First Bank Kansas, Angie enjoys spending time with her husband, Kevin, working on church projects, traveling, and spending time with their large and tight-knit extended family.

“I have worked with Angie for almost 30 years. I admire her dedication, work ethic, knowledge, and above all, her integrity,” said Curt Glaser, executive vice president and chief lending officer.

MANHATTAN – The Kansas 4-H program will be hosting two training sessions for those who are interested in volunteering to help with their local club programs.&nbsp;

Diane Mack, the northeast area youth development specialist, said the first of the online workshops is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 24 and is free to attend. Interested volunteers can contact their local extension office to register.&nbsp;

“One of the things we’ve been working on is support for local clubs,” Mack said. “And one of the things we wanted to do as we near a new 4-H year in October was to plan training sessions for our club leaders and volunteers. We also have resources and encourage volunteers to visit the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/4-h-programs/clubs/index.html" target="_blank">Club Corner on the Kansas 4-H web page</a>.”&nbsp;

“We’re excited to recognize the work that volunteers have done because we know that throughout the pandemic, they’ve had to do work differently than ever before,” said Jill Martinson, a 4-H youth development agent in the Chisholm Trail Extension District. “We want to thank them for that and then also kick off the new 4-H year by showing them that we appreciate what they have done during a difficult time.”&nbsp;

All Kansas 4-H volunteers – or those who wish to volunteer – are encouraged to take part in the approximately 1 ½ hour training session, Martinson said.&nbsp;

Nora Rhoades, a 4-H youth development agent in the Post Rock Extension District, said the workshops will capitalize on some of the research that has been learned regarding positive youth development.&nbsp;

“One of our objectives is to empower our volunteers with valuable resources and knowledge gained so they can make sure that the programs they are implementing at the local level are strong and are going to be powerful impact tools for our youth,” Rhoades said.&nbsp;

Martinson added: “The science behind youth development is always developing, and that’s an area where we want to stay current for our 4-H volunteers, because we know that the more information they have, the more successful they can be in (helping) 4-H youth.”&nbsp;

Mack notes that the Kansas 4-H program is capitalizing on research and work put forward by the&nbsp;<a href="https://searchinstitute.org/" target="_blank">Search Institute</a>, a&nbsp;&nbsp;non-profit organization that focuses on unlocking the power of relationships that promote positive youth development through research and practical solutions.&nbsp;

“We are using the most current research to help our leaders and volunteers across the state to build relationships with our young people,” Mack said.&nbsp;

Martinson said more information on the Aug. 24 training – and on another session scheduled for Sept. 23 – will be published in social media channels maintained by the Kansas 4-H program. Current volunteers and leaders may also be receiving email messages with sign-up information from their local office.&nbsp;

It's almost time for the Salina Women's Fair!

MANHATTAN – The transition back to school during the past year’s pandemic was tough on a lot of people, but just in case you think last year’s challenges are behind us, we have some bad news.&nbsp;

In fact, this year’s transition could be equally demanding, even in cases where mask mandates, social distancing and hybrid learning are not in play.&nbsp;

For starters, Kansas State University child development specialist Bradford Wiles notes that more children than normal could be experiencing in-class school for the first time. Whereas in most years, it’s the preschoolers and kindergarteners heading off to their first day in a strange place, this year creates that same challenge for first graders – some of whom may have spent last year learning entirely from home.&nbsp;

“There’s going to be differences when children return to school,” Wiles said. “They already have this generalized, underlying anxiety about going back to school. We all had that when we were young. It’s new. It’s different.&nbsp;

“But then layering on top of that is the uncertainty of what school is going to look like, who’s going to be there, who’s not. That can really cause some difficulties for children to process what’s going on.”&nbsp;

This is the time for parents to continue being diligent about talking with their children, Wiles said. “Of all the times that we need parents to be really responsive and really invested in what their children are feeling, it’s right now,” he said.&nbsp;

“As adults, we tend to think about thoughts as opposed to emotions, a little bit more. But&nbsp;&nbsp;now is the time when, as parents, we need to have conversations with our children about their feelings.”&nbsp;

‘Anxiety’ appropriately describes what children may be feeling as the first day of school approaches, “but we don’t want to call it anxieties” when talking with children, Wiles said.&nbsp;

“You want to ask, ‘what are you afraid of,’ or ‘is there something I can do to help you understand what’s going on,’” he said.&nbsp;

Parents who feel anxious don’t need to hide those emotions. Wiles said it’s okay for parents to admit that they, too, feel anxiety or have certain fears in sending their children back to school.&nbsp;

“You don’t want to go overboard, of course,” Wiles said. “You want to talk about how you’re feeling, but not so much show that anxiety. If that happens and your child notices that you’re running around the kitchen re-organizing everything because you’re feeling anxious, then fine, you can address that.&nbsp;

“But really children can learn a ton through age-appropriate conversations. Being able to tell your three-year-old that you’re a little scared too is okay. It’s okay to be scared, but then what do we do when we’re scared? Well, we try to take deep breaths, we try to think of things that aren’t scary; we try to work through and talk through the things that are making us scared and figure out what we’ll do when we get to those things.”&nbsp;

“The best response if you’re scared (as a parent) is to say, ‘I’m scared too. We’ll get through this together.’”&nbsp;

Wiles adds that children take very seriously the things that their parents or primary caregiver tell them: “If you say it’s going to be okay, then it’s going to be okay,” he said.&nbsp;

“For parents of younger children, you don’t want to burden them with your own emotional state, but I would recommend that you offer the recognition of a shared understanding.”&nbsp;

Once school begins, Wiles said a good strategy for parents is to ask open-ended questions of children, such as “What was your favorite part of school today?” And, perhaps also share with your child what your favorite part of the day has been.&nbsp;

“You’re connecting,” Wiles said. “And if we approach this new school year that way, we’re going to be in really good shape.”&nbsp;

Whereas in most years, it’s the preschoolers and kindergarteners heading off to their first day in a strange place, this year creates that same challenge for first graders – some of whom may have spent last year learning entirely from home.&nbsp;“There’s going to be differences when children return to school,” Wiles said. “They already have this generalized, underlying anxiety about going back to school. We all had that when we were young. It’s new. It’s different.&nbsp;“But then layering on top of that is the uncertainty of what school is going to look like, who’s going to be there, who’s not. That can really cause some difficulties for children to process what’s going on.”&nbsp;This is the time for parents to continue being diligent about talking with their children, Wiles said. “Of all the times that we need parents to be really responsive and really invested in what their children are feeling, it’s right now,” he said.&nbsp;“As adults, we tend to think about thoughts as opposed to emotions, a little bit more. But&nbsp;&nbsp;now is the time when, as parents, we need to have conversations with our children about their feelings.”&nbsp;‘Anxiety’ appropriately describes what children may be feeling as the first day of school approaches, “but we don’t want to call it anxieties” when talking with children, Wiles said.&nbsp;“You want to ask, ‘what are you afraid of,’ or ‘is there something I can do to help you understand what’s going on,’” he said.&nbsp;Parents who feel anxious don’t need to hide those emotions. Wiles said it’s okay for parents to admit that they, too, feel anxiety or have certain fears in sending their children back to school.&nbsp;“You don’t want to go overboard, of course,” Wiles said. “You want to talk about how you’re feeling, but not so much show that anxiety. If that happens and your child notices that you’re running around the kitchen re-organizing everything because you’re feeling anxious, then fine, you can address that.&nbsp;“But really children can learn a ton through age-appropriate conversations. Being able to tell your three-year-old that you’re a little scared too is okay. It’s okay to be scared, but then what do we do when we’re scared? Well, we try to take deep breaths, we try to think of things that aren’t scary; we try to work through and talk through the things that are making us scared and figure out what we’ll do when we get to those things.”&nbsp;“The best response if you’re scared (as a parent) is to say, ‘I’m scared too. We’ll get through this together.’”&nbsp;Wiles adds that children take very seriously the things that their parents or primary caregiver tell them: “If you say it’s going to be okay, then it’s going to be okay,” he said.&nbsp;“For parents of younger children, you don’t want to burden them with your own emotional state, but I would recommend that you offer the recognition of a shared understanding.”&nbsp;Once school begins, Wiles said a good strategy for parents is to ask open-ended questions of children, such as “What was your favorite part of school today?” And, perhaps also share with your child what your favorite part of the day has been.&nbsp;“You’re connecting,” Wiles said. “And if we approach this new school year that way, we’re going to be in really good shape.”&nbsp;More information on child development&nbsp;<a href="http://www.hhs.k-state.edu/ahs/extension/child-development" target="_blank">is available online</a>&nbsp;from K-State Research and Extension.&nbsp;

Impactful heat and humidity may continue beyond Wednesday for part of the area. Additionally, warm overnight low temperatures only falling into the upper 70s will add to the impact of the heat, especially for those without air conditioning.

Additionally, a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for Marion County and McPherson County, the weather service noted.

Heat index values of 104 to 109 degrees are forecast.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1-9 p.m. Wednesday for Jewell County and Mitchell County.

Heat index values near or exceeding 105 degrees are forecast.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 109 are expected.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Weaving, and our basic understanding of loom, warp, and weft, stretch to cover such divergent applications as computer-generated Jacquard, tapestry, and even sculpture. Artists in this group exhibition challenge our conventional understanding of thread, fiber, cloth, and embroidery.

Heralding from Salina, Kansas City, New York, Chicago, and Eugene, this divergent group of artists introduces a variety of scales from small intricately woven handmade embellishments to large fabric installations. Exhibiting Artists include Shawn Marie Delker, Leadell Ediger, Kim Eichler-Messmer, Rachelle Gardner-Roe, Jean Hamilton, Ellie Murphy, kg, Jovencio de la Paz, Kathryne Perney, Jason Pollen, Casey Whittier, Kristy Yenkey, and Jillian Youngbird.

Contemporary Textile&nbsp;is funded by art center donors, members, and the Salina Art Center Endowment Foundation, along with the Horizons Grants Program of the Salina Arts and Humanities Foundation, a private donor group.

As it was for a large portion of the state, July was cooler and drier than normal in Salina.

According to the National Weather Service, the monthly average temperature in Salina was 79.9 degrees, which was 1.0 degree cooler than normal. It tied for the 39th coolest July since records began in 1900, and it was the coolest since 2014. 

Five days reached or exceeded 100 degrees during the month, which was a few days below the 30-year normal of about seven days. 

The warmest temperature was 103 degrees on July 30, and the coolest was 57 degrees on July 12. Neither of those was a record breaker. The record high temperature for July is 116 degrees on July 18, 1936, and again on July 24, 1936. The record low temperature is 46 degrees, which was set on July 7, 1908, and tied on July 3, 1924.

In the rainfall category, only 1.44 inches fell at Salina Regional Airport during the month, which was 2.48 inches drier than normal, the weather service noted. It was the 30th driest July on record, and the driest since 2014.

The maximum rainfall record was set in July 1993 when 17.93 inches of rain fell. The minimum record was set in 1975 when no measurable rainfall was recorded.

The average wind speed was 8.9 mph. The highest sustained wind was 36 mph on July 10. The highest wind gust was 51 mph on July 25.

Chip sealing is a method of pavement surface treatment which prolongs the serviceability of streets by sealing the surface. Combined with joint and crack sealing, this surface treatment program extends the service life of pavement.

Owners and occupants along residential streets will be notified ahead of time that their streets will be closed to traffic while the work is being completed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the construction altogether and find alternate routes to their destinations while the work is occurring.

The $171,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.
