Wendy's is putting luck into breakfast on Friday the Thirteenth

CHAPMAN - An Abilene man was killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 70 west of Chapman early this afternoon.

Ryan Pack, 34, of Abilene, was eastbound in a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox approximately 1.5 miles west of the Chapman exit when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a westbound tractor-trailer rig driven by Garrett Jones, 32, of Lawrence, according to information from the Kansas Highway Patrol. Pack was dead at the scene. Jones had no apparent injuries, the KHP report noted.

The crash occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m.

The westbound lanes of that section of I-70 have been closed due to bridge construction work, necessitating one eastbound lane being used for westbound traffic.

UPDATE 2 p.m. Thursday: This crash is a fatality crash, according to a post on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/KHPTroopC">Kansas Highway Patrol Troop C</a>&nbsp;Facebook page.

Strong to severe storms are expected to develop across central Kansas over the next few hours. 

The strongest storms will be capable of winds of 50-65 mph and dime to quarter size hail. Minor localized flooding will be possible as well.

Lottery announces Jayhawk Gameday Experience winners

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced that 40 domestic violence and sexual assault programs and children’s advocacy centers in Kansas will receive more than $6 million in grants to improve services for survivors of sexual assault, violence, and child abuse.

“Through these grants, we will bolster critical support services for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“My administration will continue to do all we can to provide support and resources to Kansans who need it most.”

The 2022 State General Fund Grant Program for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault provides funds for sexual and domestic violence programs in communities across Kansas.&nbsp; The programs are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide a wide range of services such as emergency safe shelter, crisis helpline calls, crisis, intervention, on-going counseling and support, and advocacy to help victim and survivors increase safety for themselves and their families.

Kansas children’s advocacy centers (CACs) are awarded funds from the 2022 State General Funds for Children’s Advocacy Centers.&nbsp; CACs are child-focused, community-oriented programs coordinating investigation and intervention services for abused children by bringing together professionals and agencies in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary model.&nbsp;

A Salina man was arrested after he allegedy struck an acquaintance with a Chevrolet Suburban Wednesday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to the parking lot of 1515 W. Crawford Street for the report of a man being hit by a vehicle. Montana Davis, 26, of Salina, was struck by a tan Chevrolet Subruban that then left eastbound on W. Crawford Street, he said.

A witness told police that she saw the Suburban drive past Davis as he was walking on the sidewalk. She said the Suburban made a U-turn, drove back toward Davis, and up onto the sidewalk, striking Davis. He had non-life-threatening injuries to his left arm and leg and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

A short while after the incident, a City of Salina employee noticed the Suburban at the gas island at Dillons, 1201 W. Crawford Street, Forrester said. The Suburban left eastbound on W. Crawford Street and attempted to elude the city worker, he said.

Later in the day, an officer located the Suburban at the intersection of McAdams Road and Sunrise Drive. The driver, Scott Smith, 28, of Salina, was taken into custody. He was found to have a Social Security card in his possession that was reported stolen in a vehicle burglary on June 16, Forrester said.

Smith was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Forrester said Davis and Smith were acquainted.

Making a list, checking it twice . . . Oh wait, it’s not the holiday season quite yet? You may still be enjoying time at the pool, but if you haven’t started yet,&nbsp;now&nbsp;is the best time to start budgeting for Christmas. When you make a Christmas budget ahead of time, you can stop the holiday stress before it even begins.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Why Do a Christmas Budget (and Why&nbsp;Now)?

All the holiday magic you want to create needs to start with having a Christmas budget. Yes, it’s even more important than presents and trees with all the trimmings.

The hustle and bustle of holidays will be stressful enough already. We tend to feel we have to keep up with the Joneses, and it may feel like we need to go over and above&nbsp;this&nbsp;Christmas to make up for last year. But caving to that pressure, and spending without a plan, can ruin the joy of the season and bury you in credit card debt for months.&nbsp;&nbsp;

How to Do a Christmas Budget

I know some of you hear the B-word (budget) and want to run for the hills. But a budget is nothing more than a plan—on paper, ahead of time—that gives you&nbsp;permission to spend.

Here’s how to do your Christmas budget:

●First, decide how much you can spend. How much can you afford to save between now and Christmas? Break it up by paycheck and plan to put that amount aside every payday so it’s safe from Friday night pizza runs.

●Make a list—just like Santa—of the people you want to buy presents for. You should also include line items for food and décor if you tend to go all&nbsp;Better Homes and Gardens&nbsp;on your house during the holidays. Don’t forget parties, and any December travel you want to do.

●Include a dollar amount next to each name and category. Yes, it feels weird to put $60 next to Grandma, but it’s what you have to do to win.

 ●Subtract those numbers from the total you’re planning to save, and if you ended up with zero, you have perfected the Christmas budget.

 ●That’s your budget. The key is to stick to it. This will help you avoid emotional and last-minute spending.

The exhibit, “We Are Not Alone,” will be on display until Aug. 29. The gallery is open during library hours:&nbsp;9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.,&nbsp;Monday - Thursday;&nbsp;9 a.m. - 6 p.m.,&nbsp;Friday - Saturday;&nbsp;noon - 6 p.m., Sunday. The library is located at 301 W. Elm Street.

The show features 15 mixed media pieces of insects and other lifeforms. Weaver acknowledges that while people often find insects to be disgusting, he loves them. 

“Insects, like the deepest of sea creatures, do not appear to be from this Earth,” Weaver said.

Weaver credits his passion for art to his mother and was inspired to explore pointillism in college while taking a class taught by local artist Harley Elliot. Weaver said he is “amazed that one tiny dot times a thousand can form matter, cause shadows and add depth to a 2D canvas.” 

Earlier this year, Weaver was selected as a winning artist in Salina Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless competition. His piece “What Choo Lookn At” won the mixed media/crafts amateur category and is part of the show in Gallery 708.

Kansas Wesleyan has announced a transformational new project, believed to be among the first of its kind nationally. 

Tentatively labeled, “The Mentor Project,”&nbsp;the residential, immersive experience designed to re-work higher education in the context of climate change will be led by&nbsp;Matthew R. Sanderson

“The Mentor Project has been a Kansas Wesleyan goal for years,” said Matt Thompson, KWU president. “Climate change is the challenge of our times. As a United-Methodist-affiliated institution, we have an obligation to prepare students for the world into which they will graduate. This includes helping them to understand their role in changing the climate and preparing them for the effects of climate change on our communities, our work, and our families. Our goal is to prepare students for more than just careers or jobs. We must prepare them to think broadly, understand connections, put their education to use and lead change. To bring in an experienced professional in Matt Sanderson – one of the top experts in this field – is the ideal way to initiate this revolutionary program. His appointment marks a transformational moment in the life of KWU.”

The program will be built from the ground-up and it will integrate practical, skill-based knowledge with more traditional forms of learning. A piece of farmland in the small town of Mentor, six miles from Kansas Wesleyan, is a potential aspect of the project.

“For decades, there has been a division between traditional higher education and skilled labor, or to put it another way, the practical application of education,” said Thompson. “For the past 80 years, we have seen college enrollments spike, and we have seen CO2&nbsp;emissions spike.&nbsp; Just providing more information and knowledge to students is clearly not fixing the problem of climate change. We need change – and we need change now. We need education to be part of the solution, not the problem. We need to bring skill-based knowledge into the classroom, no matter what a student’s future career is. The Mentor Project is not just about one way of thinking, or one type of skill. It’s about a change of mindsets, worldviews and ways of life.”

A fifth-generation Kansan, Sanderson has been Randall C. Hill Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work and professor of gography and geospatial sciences at Kansas State University since 2011. He is Editor-in-Chief of&nbsp;Agriculture and Human Values, the leading scholarly journal for interdisciplinary research on culture, agriculture and food. Prior to his position at Kansas State University, he held a joint appointment as assistant professor of sociology and global studies at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Sanderson has also been a visiting professor at the Center for Environmental Resource Management at the University of Texas-El Paso and a research fellow at the Hugo Centre for Population and Migration Research at the University of Adelaide in Australia.

“Matt is one of the top professionals in this field,” said Thompson. “He is leaving much behind to come to KWU to start this program: a tenured, full-professor position with an endowed chair at a research university – his alma mater no less – his successful research programs and his graduate students.&nbsp; It is a tremendous leap, both personally and professionally, and it is one that very few would have the courage to make. We cannot wait to participate in the work he leads as we move forward into a much more uncertain future for our climate, our society and higher education.”

Sanderson’s official title, until the launch of the new program, will be special assistant to the president. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and economics and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology, both from Kansas State University. He earned a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in sociology, with concentrations in population and environment, from the University of Utah. Sanderson’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Australian Research Council, among others.

“I did not arrive at KWU by following any sort of conventional career path,” said Sanderson, “Nor do I come here as yet another step on a career ladder on my way to somewhere else. I am here because I continue to search for answers I have not yet found. More than two decades of soul-searching, guided by my scholarly research, led me to this point. I am humbled by the nature of the challenges in front of us, and by the responsibility KWU has given me to lead.”

KWU will release more information about the Mentor Project’s program of study following the accreditation process.

“Change is in the air,” said Sanderson. “Business-as-usual is no longer an option, at least not if we value life. The problems we see in higher education, our communities, and our relationships with the Earth are not completely separate. As the era of energy-intensive development draws to a close, we must find softer glidepaths into a lower-energy future. That means we must build communities that have the cultural capacity to live into transformation – communities of people who are more comfortable with uncertainty, who can adapt, create and enact new ways of living more meaningful lives. Education that translates into meaningful actions in a particular place can help us find our way.”

“If the changes we need were easy, we would have made them by now,” said Sanderson. “What is easy is the status quo, business-as-usual. But, business-as-usual is creating an uninhabitable world. The cultures and social structures that got us into this mess are not likely to help us find our way into more sustainable relationships with each other and the world. To be sure, we are likely to fail, and fail many times along the way in our efforts to create new models. But, this moment marks an important point in our journey. I am ready to get to work. It is long past time to get started.”

Sanderson joins KWU to launch new, transformational project

One person was injured in an accident just after 2 p.m. Wednesday in Salina.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevrolet cargo van driven by Brandon W. Myers, 37, Wichita, was&nbsp;northbound on Interstate 135 just north of Water Well Road. 

The van rear ended 2008 Toyota Avalon driven by Katy J.&nbsp;Kroeker, 23, Salina, who slowed for traffic in the construction zone.

EMS transported a passenger in the Chevrolet, Mario A.&nbsp;Gonzales, 40, Aurora, Colo., to Salina Regional Health Center. Myers and Kroeker were not injured.&nbsp;Gonzales was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

1 hospitalized after construction zone, rear-end crash

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

●14 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19.

●32 new cases of COVID-19 since Monday.

●138 variants were identified in the 262 samples sent from Saline County to KDHE for sequencing.

Two additional members of our community have lost their lives to COVID-19 since our last update on Monday. Salina Regional Health Center reports they currently have 14 patients who require hospitalization for the virus.

There have been 32 new COVID-19 cases identified since our last update on Monday. The Saline County Health Department staff is actively monitoring 440 cases of COVID-19. There has been a total of 6929 confirmed cases, and at least 6364 people have recovered from COVID-19.

KDHE has identified variants in 138 of the 262 specimens sent from Saline County for sequencing.

At least 23,372 people or 43.1 percent of the population have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Saline County. This is an increase of 441 people or .8 percent over last week.

Due to the overwhelming number of new cases and hospitalizations, vaccination/ re-infection rates are not available at this time. The Saline County Health Department and Salina Regional Health Center thank you for your patience and understanding.

Salina Regional Health Center reports they currently have 14 patients who require hospitalization for the virus. There have been 32 new COVID-19 cases identified since our last update on Monday. The Saline County Health Department staff is actively monitoring 440 cases of COVID-19. There has been a total of 6929 confirmed cases, and at least 6364 people have recovered from COVID-19. KDHE has identified variants in 138 of the 262 specimens sent from Saline County for sequencing. At least 23,372 people or 43.1 percent of the population have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Saline County. This is an increase of 441 people or .8 percent over last week. Due to the overwhelming number of new cases and hospitalizations, vaccination/ re-infection rates are not available at this time.
