"The FDA inspected Best Harvest Bakery, my supplier for my little buns, found traces of salmonella in the plant. Without knowing which product could be affected, we were advised to dispose of ALL of my product. Out of abundance of caution, I am throwing my buns away in the dumpster," the restaurant noted in a post on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thecozyinn/">Facebook page</a> earlier today.

The post continued, "Very sad this is happening, but we will have a different product Monday morning! Thank you all of my travelers for coming and I am sad and sorry this happened… we will be going again on Monday 8/16/21!"

The 45th anniversary Smoky Hill River Festival is billed as an “Epic Arts Party” of things to see, hear, taste and feel. 

Among the notable things festival-goers can enjoy Sept 2-5 in Oakdale Park, are:

Seven first-time food vendors with delectable Food Row treats including frog legs, soft pretzels, meatball sliders, coconut shrimp, and bacon-wrapped sausage on a stick. The festival’s Food Row fare will tempt festival fans from 4 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Sept. 3 and 4, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 5. 

Nearly 60 new artists will exhibit at the Fine Art and Craft Show and in the art/craft demo area, in a variety of media. The more than 120 festival artists, including eight art/craft demonstration artists, hail from nearly 20 states.

More than 50 groups will perform on the festival’s 45th-anniversary four live stages. Eric Stein Stage headliners include New Orleans-based Cowboy Mouth (Friday) , the Grammy-winning Phantom Blues Band from Los Angeles (Saturday), and local favorite Sunset Sinners on Sunday afternoon.

Genres of music represented this year include blues, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop, reggae, folk and more. Among the acts making their first-ever appearance at the Festival are Brooklyn, NY-based SunDub, Kansas City jazz group The Marcus Lewis Band, and Jarabe Mexicano from San Diego. Festival fans will remember popular returning acts Acoustic Eidolon, That 1 Guy, plus roving performers Drum Safari, Magic Bubbles and balloon artists Up Up &amp; Away.

Lots of Fun is planned for the Artyopolis kid’s area, including Creation Crossing make-and-take items Fuzzy Flexible Art, Imagination Station,&nbsp; and Make Your Mark. Returning professional face painters Color Me Crazy will provide airbrushed arm or leg tattoos this year. Among the free Game Street activities are a football plus a baseball toss. Artyopolis hours are Sept. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sept. 5 from noon to 4 p.m.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 2:30a.m. Saturday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Equinox driven by Steven R. Haun, 33, Wilson, was northbound on 105th Road one half mile south of Old Highway 40.

The SUV left the roadway and struck the City of Wilson sign.

EMS transported Haun to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

MARQUETTE – Kansas State University research scientists and extension specialists will host a field day event on Aug, 24 to discuss and demonstrate cover crop management options for soil health and water quality benefits in livestock operations.&nbsp;

The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. The event is free, and lunch will be provided. “Cover crops are not only important for long-term water supply and soil sustainability, but for our agricultural producers’ bottom line,” said Augustine Obour, a professor of soil science at K-State’s Agricultural Research Center in Hays. &nbsp;

This field day will showcase how growers can use cover crops to improve soil health and protect water quality by the reduction of sediment and nutrient losses. Participants will also hear about how K-State researchers have been evaluating cover crop management options in water-limited environments, a concern for growers in central and western Kansas. &nbsp;

Speakers at the event will include local producers and landowners, Kansas State University researchers and extension agents, and representatives from the Ellsworth County conservation district.&nbsp;

Saline County has lost another member of the community to COVID-19, bringing the death toll in the county to 126, an additional three this week. Salina Regional Health Center reports they currently have 16 patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19.

There have been 45 new COVID-19 cases identified since our last update on Wednesday, making 119 new cases in the last seven days. The Saline County Health Department staff is actively monitoring 478 cases of COVID-19. There has been a total of 6974 confirmed cases, and at least 6370 people have recovered from COVID-19.

KDHE has identified variants in 146 of the 270 specimens sent from Saline County for sequencing. At least 23,372 people or 43.1 percent of the population have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Saline County. This is an increase of 441 people or .8 percent over last week.

Due to the overwhelming number of new cases and hospitalizations, vaccination/ re-infection rates are not available at this time. The Saline County Health Department and Salina Regional Health Center thank you for your patience and understanding.

Who knew the historic H.D. Lee Flour Mills Company sign was so huge?

The sign, which had been atop the old flour mill at 343 N. Santa Fe Avenue for decades, was removed today. 

It will be refurbished and illuminated before being returned to its perch high above the north end of downtown Salina, according to information on the Salina Kanvas Project Facebook page.

Meanwhile, the body of the structure has been prepped for artist Guido Van Helten to begin work on a large-scale mural.

"We are excited to have this work commissioned here in Salina," Salina Kanvas Project member Travis Young said when the project was announced in the summer of 2020. "Guido is an extremely talented artist that will help us continue to transform downtown Salina and celebrate the spirit of this community."

The mural is being funded through private donations.

Van Helten has spent a great deal of time talking with people from the community and absorbing the local culture in order to develop a design that reflects the spirit of Salina.

The project at the old H.D. Lee Mill is the first of several projcts planned by the Salina Kanvas Project. 

"The Salina Kanvas Project is aimed at inspiring onlookers, sparking conversations and providing a catalyst for the further growth of our community through the commission of world-class murals and street art in downtown Salina, Kansas," according to the <a href="https://www.kanvasproject.com/">Salina Kanvas Project</a> website.

Running SUV stolen in north Salina Thursday morning

More than $8,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a work truck just outside the north Salina city limits.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that sometime between 7 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Thursday, someone broke into a 2007 Chevrolet C35 work truck at 1951 W. Grand Avenue. The truck is owned by David Sharp, 32, of New Cambria.

A number of Milwaukee power tools, two Preditor generators, and other equipment were stolen from the truck, Soldan said. Total loss was estimated at $8,088.

Sharp told deputies that the storage boxes on the truck were locked, however, the keys to the boxes were in the unlocked cab of the truck, Soldan said.

More than $6,200 worth of damage was done inside the old Union Pacific depot during a burglary early this morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to the old depot, 400 N. 13th, at 1 a.m. Friday for the report of a burglar alarm. When officers arrived, they found that the front door had been forced open. They cleared the building and found no one inside.

A Union Pacific employee then arrived and went through the building with police. 

Forrester said that in an electronics/computer room, four large radio atennas were found damaged. Several doors and door knobs also were damaged.

Total loss was estimated at $6,250, Forrester said.

More than $6,200 in damage as result of old UP depot burglary

Police are looking for a vehicle that was stolen in central Salina earlier this week.

Cortez Hernandez, 30, of Salina, reported that his white Chevrolet Malibu with Kansas license plate of 451MJC was stolen from in front of his residence in the 100 block of E. Wilson Street sometime between 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and 7:35 a.m. Thursday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Hernandez told police that he was moving and had left the keys in the car. 

The Malibu has a spaceman sticker on the driver's side back window and black rims with no hubcaps. The car is valued at $10,000, Forrester said.

By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostPolice are looking for a vehicle that was stolen in central Salina earlier this week.Cortez Hernandez, 30, of Salina, reported that his white Chevrolet Malibu with Kansas license plate of 451MJC was stolen from in front of his residence in the 100 block of E. Wilson Street sometime between 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and 7:35 a.m. Thursday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.Hernandez told police that he was moving and had left the keys in the car. The Malibu has a spaceman sticker on the driver's side back window and black rims with no hubcaps. The car is valued at $10,000, Forrester said.

On Aug. 1, the Salina Police Department was alerted to several vehicle burglaries.

Investigation revealed that three individuals burglarized several vehicles in the Magnolia Hill’s Estates area (Brookfield Dr.) and Red Top Ridge area between 3:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Aug. 1. The three suspects were utilizing a small four-door white car to commit the burglaries. Debit cards taken from the vehicles were used at local businesses in Salina, Kansas, by one of the involved individuals between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Aug. 1.

The subject who used the stolen debit cards is a light-skinned Black male wearing New Balance black and white sweatpants with a black hooded sweatshirt. He purchased several lottery tickets with the stolen debit cards. Another involved subject is a white male with glasses and a beard.

At a time when health information has never been more important,&nbsp;the Red Cross is screening all blood,&nbsp;platelet,&nbsp;and plasma donations from&nbsp;self-identified&nbsp;African American donors for the sickle cell trait.&nbsp;This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help&nbsp;patients with sickle cell&nbsp;disease.&nbsp;Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same&nbsp;race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
