BROOKVILLE - The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a pistol from the pickup of a Brookville man.

Gregory Norris, 63, Brookville, told deputies that sometime between Aug. 1 and Friday, someone stole a Glock 42 .380 caliber pistol from his 2005 Ford pickup, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. There were no signs of forced entry.

A Little Rock, Ark., man is out more than $5,500 after a trailer he was pulling was stolen while he stayed at a west Salina motel.

David Rieger, 48, Little Rock, Ark., told police that sometime between 2-6 a.m. Friday someone stole his 14-foot flatbed trailer with two four-wheel ATVs on it and the trailer hitch from his vehicle, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The vehicle and trailer were parked at the Baymont Inn, 1740 W. Crawford Street.

One of the ATVs was a green 2000 Honda 350 and the other was a yellow 2007 Honda 250, Forrester said.

Police are checking surveillance video from the area, Forrester said.

GLENDALE - A Brookville woman was transported to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) after a one-vehicle accident Friday afternoon.

Kathleen Hartley, 56, Brookville, was westbound on Watkins Road in a silver 2005 Toyota Highlander when the SUV got over on the soft shoulder and left the roadway, coming to a stop when it hit a metal fence post, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The accident occurred at 3:35 p.m. Friday about a tenth of a mile east of Miller Road west of Glendale.

Hartley complained of pain and was transported to SRHC, Soldan said.

A pickup that was stolen twice has now been impounded twice.

On Sunday, police were called to an impound lot at 1334 N. Ohio Street owned by Palmer Towing for the report of a stolen pickup, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Sometime between 2-5 p.m. Sunday, someone cut the lock on the gate and stole a red 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. The pickup, belonging to Krier Mowing and Electric in Concordia, had been reported stolen, had been found by the Salina Police Department, and had been impounded at the Palmer lot, Forrester said.

The Kansas license plate from the pickup was found in the grass. Forrester said a Kansas license plate from a GMC Suburban in the lot -- 639 MUP -- was later found on the stolen pickup. 

The pickup was valued at $8,000. The lock was valued at $10.

Forrester said that at 12:45 a.m. this morning, officers found the stolen pickup at the Econo Lodge, 636 Westport Boulevard.

The Salina Police Department impounded the pickup once again.

The heat is on. With heat indices forecast to soar, the National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for much of the state.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Make sure to stay properly hydrated and take frequent breaks.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Atwater to speak at next Eisenhower Library Evenings at Ease

Rezoning and annexation are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. Commissioners are scheduled to hear the first reading of a proposed ordinance for the rezoning of the former Kmart store property at S. Broadway Boulevard and W. South Street. 

Rabb Investments, LLC, has requested that the property be rezoned from C-3 (shopping center) to C-5 (service commercial). Rabb has a contract to purchase the property with plans to convert it into an Atwood's Ranch and Home store. The farm and ranch supply store based in Oklahoma has 66 stores covering a five-state area. 

The Atwood business model includes displaying farm and ranch merchandise outside in front of the store. As the property currently is zoned, only "plants, nursery stock and gardening supplies in an area not greater than fifteen (15) percent of the floor area of the store" may be displayed outside, according to information from the city.

Commissioners also are scheduled to to hear the first reading of a proposed ordinance to annex the former Signify plant site on S. Ninth Street. On Aug. 6, 2020, the city commission adopted a resolution preliminarily indicating the city's intent to issue $20 million in industrial revenue bonds for what was later announced as Great Plains Manufacturing's expansion into the site, with the understanding that the plant site would be annexed into the city upon Great Plains taking ownership.

Other items on the city agenda for Monday include the following.

●Conduct a public hearing at the conclusion of the Community Development Block Grant - Coronavirus process.

●Hear the first reading of a proposed ordinance levying special assessments against certain lots and pieces of property to pay the cost of sidewalk repairs.

●Consider awarding a bid for Bill Burke Park drainage improvements to Smoky Hill, LLC, of Salina, in the amount not to exceed $136,849.13 (including a five-percent construction contingency) and authorizing the city manager to execute a contract with Smoky Hill, LLC, upon fulfillment of all prerequisites under the bid documents.

On August 9, 1945, three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, a U.S. B-29 Superfortress code-named Bockscar dropped a nuclear device ("Fat Man") over Nagasaki, killing an estimated 74,000 people.

In 1910, the U.S. Patent Office granted Alva J. Fisher of the Hurley Machine Co. a patent for an electrically powered washing machine.

HAYS – Businesses and organizations in northwest Kansas can now apply for a spring 2022 or summer 2022 intern from Fort Hays State University through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship program.

A grant from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation made 25 paid internships possible for next spring and summer. Applications from employers will be accepted through Sept. 17.

Eligible employers must be located in the Hansen Foundation’s 26-county service area: the block of counties stretching from the Cheyenne-Wallace County area east to include the Republic-Saline County area, including Ellsworth County. However, students do not have to be from the northwest Kansas area to apply.

A participating employer invests $500 toward the student intern’s wages, and the remaining funding is provided by the Hansen Foundation grant. Each internship is for one semester or summer. Spring interns will work 240 total hours, and summer interns will work 300 total hours.

“We’re grateful for the Dane G. Hansen Foundation’s continued support of this program,” said Lisa Karlin, internship career advisor. “It provides employers access to new talent and allows students to gain professional work experience through internships.”

Employer applications open for Hansen interns from FHSU

That sign is displayed on the desk of a creative person who manages a theater in small town Kansas, as she imagines how to engage more people in the arts. &nbsp;

Shannon Martin is the director of the Burford Theatre and Ark City Area Arts Council in Arkansas City. Her desk sports the sign, “Welcome to my imagination.”&nbsp;

Shannon went to high school in Iola and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Pittsburg State. She is the mother to four sons: Micah, Riley, Wyatt, and Wade.&nbsp;

Shannon and her husband Grady now live in eastern Cowley County. Grady works for General Electric and runs a cow-calf operation. Their historic farm home, stone barn and rental cabins are near the rural community of Dexter, population 278 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

In 2017, Shannon took the position as director of the Ark City Area Arts Council and director of the historic Burford Theatre in downtown Arkansas City.&nbsp;

The Burford Theatre was built in 1924. It is named for J. R. Burford, who joined other leading citizens of Ark City in deciding that the community needed a theater. The theater was designed by a Kansas City-based architectural firm called the Boller Brothers that specialized in theatrical buildings and is said to have designed or consulted on the design of more than 300 theaters in the Midwest and west coast.&nbsp;

“There are two trademarks of a Boller Brothers theater,” Shannon said. “One is stained glass medallions in the ceiling, and the other is that the balconies are built with huge steel beams underneath so that there are no columns in the balcony to block the view.” In the case of the Burford, the medallions are in a beautiful sunflower design. The interior of the Burford Theatre itself was designed with a Spanish renaissance theme.&nbsp;

The Burford opened on Sept. 15, 1924, with a silent movie called “The Perfect Flapper.” The silent movies were succeeded by the “talkies,” along with vaudeville shows in the early years. One live performer was Ginger Rogers, for example.&nbsp;

The Burford continued as a movie theater until the early 2000s, when a new multiplex movie theater was built north of town. At that time, the owners donated the Burford to the Ark City Area Arts Council. Local citizens had the dream of restoring the Burford to its original elegant design.&nbsp;

“The restoration took ten years and $10 million,” Shannon said. Today, the theater is beautiful and meticulously restored.&nbsp;

An interesting tradition is found in the dressing room where early performers signed the wall panels. Among the preserved signatures are the Allard Sisters, identified as NY, NY 1928. Another signature is from a dancer who wrote that she danced in the Follies of 1929.&nbsp;

These historic panels have been preserved, and new panels added where modern day performers can sign. Those include many artists such as Ned LeDoux, Jim Stafford, and Joe Diffie, who performed on this stage one month before he passed away in 2020.&nbsp;

The theater is kept extremely busy with live performances, school plays, community theater, kids camps and special events such as weddings, reunions, and holiday parties.&nbsp;

“The Burford is for everyone, for all ages,” Shannon said. “We offer diversity and a wide variety of events, from country music to jazz to gospel. My goal is that the theater would be clean and comfortable with great sound, and that the staff is friendly and professional.&nbsp;

“It’s a hidden gem. I want people to come in and see what’s behind the marquee.”&nbsp;

“I’m always thinking about ways to engage more people and get them into the theater and expose them to the arts,” Shannon said. This led a friend to get her the desk sign saying “Welcome to my imagination.”&nbsp;

Among the preserved signatures are the Allard Sisters, identified as NY, NY 1928. Another signature is from a dancer who wrote that she danced in the Follies of 1929.&nbsp;These historic panels have been preserved, and new panels added where modern day performers can sign. Those include many artists such as Ned LeDoux, Jim Stafford, and Joe Diffie, who performed on this stage one month before he passed away in 2020.&nbsp;The theater is kept extremely busy with live performances, school plays, community theater, kids camps and special events such as weddings, reunions, and holiday parties.&nbsp;“The Burford is for everyone, for all ages,” Shannon said. “We offer diversity and a wide variety of events, from country music to jazz to gospel. My goal is that the theater would be clean and comfortable with great sound, and that the staff is friendly and professional.&nbsp;“It’s a hidden gem. KLA/K-State Field Days set for August

The City of Salina has announced that in preparation for school beginning later in the month, reduced-speed school flashing lights will be activated Monday. 

Motorists are encouraged to be aware of children and school buses and practice extra caution while traveling through these school zones.

Per Kansas law, vehicles must stop and yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks; additionally, when the flashing lights on a school bus are activated and its STOP arm is extended, surrounding vehicles traveling in both directions must come to a complete stop.

Storms blow in some rain for our area Saturday night

Storms blew through the area Saturday night, bringing with them much needed rain and not so much needed wind.

Shortly before 9 p.m., a wind gust of 64 mph was recorded at the Salina Regional Airport. The sustained winds were 38 mph at the airport.

The storm that came through Salina temporarily knocked out power to several Salina neighborhoods.

As of 10:15 a.m. Sunday, 180 Evergy customers in south Salina were still without power. The area affected is on either side of E. Magnolia Road between S. Ohio Street and Belmont Boulevard. Power went out in that neighborhood shortly before 9 p.m. and is expected to be restored by noon today, according to Evergy's <a href="https://outagemap.evergy.com/?_ga=2.254604296.1814122693.1628392010-402036039.1628392010">outage map webpage</a>.

Additionally, a few customers in the airport industrial area and in central Salina near the intersection of S. Ninth Street and W. Crawford Street were still without power according to the Evergy outage map.

When the starting tackle at McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, showed up at practice one Monday this May, he didn’t realize how bad his week was about to get.

McKinley’s football coaches&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/local/canton/father-canton-mckinley-football-player-says-coaches-forced-son-against-religion-as-punishment/95-8687daee-4656-4e01-9228-4eeaf0614216" target="_blank">reportedly</a>&nbsp;took issue with the teen’s conduct after he missed a voluntary training due to an injured shoulder. In a misguided attempt to punish his behavior, the coaches had him sit in the middle of the gym and eat a pepperoni pizza. The boy protested, not just to avoid the humiliation, but crucially, because he is a Hebrew Israelite. Many Hebrew Israelites, like this boy and his family,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Black-Hebrew-Israelites" target="_blank">abstain from eating pork for religious reasons</a>.

After repeatedly telling his coaches about the dietary restriction, according to his family, they partially relented by allowing the student to pick off the pepperoni slices, leaving the pork fat behind. Finally, the boy gave in. While he ate and worried about whether he would lose his position on the team,&nbsp;<a href="https://fox8.com/news/canton-mckinley-high-school-video-released-of-pizza-incident-students-lawyer-pursuing-as-hate-crime/" target="_blank">video</a>&nbsp;shows his coaches and peers appear to berate him.

No student should have to choose between following their faith and participating in team sports. By disregarding the deepest beliefs of their students, educators risk placing those under their protection in unwinnable and potentially traumatizing situations — in addition to violating their First Amendment right to religious freedom.

Beyond the obvious health benefits, participating in high school athletics&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfhs.org/articles/participation-in-high-school-athletics-has-long-lasting-benefits/" target="_blank">has been shown</a>&nbsp;to develop a strong sense of community, boost academic performance, reduce stress and even&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2014/10/21/taking-sports-out-of-school-2/high-school-athletes-gain-lifetime-benefits?.?mc=aud_dev&amp;ad-keywords=auddevgate&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwxdSHBhCdARIsAG6zhlXniAGIg5RTjoHmGrlDQuFTLAh4bxthXv1Vlz-3pg8pIEFSaEmkzwkaAoFvEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank">increase lifetime earnings</a>. However, whether it is a Hebrew Israelite starting tackle facing punishment or a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/faith-and-football-collide-on-area-public-high-school-fields/2013/10/14/9da7fb28-1fb5-11e3-8459-657e0c72fec8_story.html" target="_blank">Muslim team captain</a>&nbsp;reciting the Lord’s Prayer before a game, many adolescents feel obligated to demonstrate belonging and respect to their peers even if that means compromising their religious beliefs.

Respecting human dignity is not an explicit demand of the First Amendment. Instead, in the case of public schools, it requires that the religious beliefs of students be accommodated whenever possible. This expression of “free exercise,” alongside a prohibition against establishing one religion over another or belief over non-belief, serves both as our constitutional right to religious freedom and a framework for living with difference. Public school educators, including coaches, are bound to protect the religious freedom rights of every student. And any American who advocates for the rights of others to live according to their deepest beliefs protects that same right for themselves.

Religion is inextricably tied to all aspects of human expression.&nbsp;<a href="https://rpl.hds.harvard.edu/what-we-do/our-approach/what-religious-literacy" target="_blank">Religious literacy</a>&nbsp;is the ability to understand the impact of religion, both on society and on the way billions of individuals shape their daily lives. Religiously literate people do not just have a basic understanding of religious doctrines and practices but, more importantly, are able to engage with religious difference openly and protect the First Amendment rights of others.

It is unclear what the coaches — who have since been fired, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-religion-education-ohio-4b312f56a61f2fe6f1583afe698d2dc9" target="_blank">vehemently deny the family’s account of the incident</a>&nbsp;— knew about their player’s dietary restrictions or Hebrew Israelites as a religious group. Nevertheless, the event in Ohio demonstrates the crucial role religious literacy plays in the First Amendment. In order to defend the First Amendment rights of students, particularly in regard to religious freedom, educators must understand what they are required to protect.

No one is asking individuals to memorize hundreds of dietary laws across all religions. Instead, a religiously literate person simply recognizes that many religious people, for a variety of reasons, follow the dietary customs of their faiths. Understanding how&nbsp;<a href="https://www.religiousfreedomcenter.org/grounding/identity/" target="_blank">religious identity is shaped</a>&nbsp;and how&nbsp;<a href="https://www.edweek.org/education/opinion-six-guidelines-for-teaching-about-religion/2016/04" target="_blank">religions are diverse and dynamic</a>&nbsp;not only allows religiously literate people to adapt to new traditions and practices, but also encourages empathy across difference. In this case, it may have been helpful for those involved to know that many Hebrew Israelites do not eat pork, but that is not critical information for respecting the student’s free exercise rights. What is crucial is the ability to discern religious identity and expression in the multitude of forms they take. Doing so requires at least some religious literacy.

Public schools are bound by the First Amendment to protect these rights. They also have a civic responsibility to prepare young Americans for productive life in a globalized world. To accomplish both, teachers, administrators and coaches must know and model First Amendment principles including religious literacy for their students. Likewise, parents, guardians, community leaders and other stakeholders are better prepared to advocate for themselves and others when they understand the role of the First Amendment and the value of religious literacy in a diverse society.

However, whether it is a Hebrew Israelite starting tackle facing punishment or a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/faith-and-football-collide-on-area-public-high-school-fields/2013/10/14/9da7fb28-1fb5-11e3-8459-657e0c72fec8_story.html" target="_blank">Muslim team captain</a>&nbsp;reciting the Lord’s Prayer before a game, many adolescents feel obligated to demonstrate belonging and respect to their peers even if that means compromising their religious beliefs.Respecting human dignity is not an explicit demand of the First Amendment. Instead, in the case of public schools, it requires that the religious beliefs of students be accommodated whenever possible. This expression of “free exercise,” alongside a prohibition against establishing one religion over another or belief over non-belief, serves both as our constitutional right to religious freedom and a framework for living with difference. Public school educators, including coaches, are bound to protect the religious freedom rights of every student. And any American who advocates for the rights of others to live according to their deepest beliefs protects that same right for themselves.Religion is inextricably tied to all aspects of human expression.&nbsp;<a href="https://rpl.hds.harvard.edu/what-we-do/our-approach/what-religious-literacy" target="_blank">Religious literacy</a>&nbsp;is the ability to understand the impact of religion, both on society and on the way billions of individuals shape their daily lives. Religiously literate people do not just have a basic understanding of religious doctrines and practices but, more importantly, are able to engage with religious difference openly and protect the First Amendment rights of others.It is unclear what the coaches — who have since been fired, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-religion-education-ohio-4b312f56a61f2fe6f1583afe698d2dc9" target="_blank">vehemently deny the family’s account of the incident</a>&nbsp;— knew about their player’s dietary restrictions or Hebrew Israelites as a religious group. Nevertheless, the event in Ohio demonstrates the crucial role religious literacy plays in the First Amendment. In order to defend the First Amendment rights of students, particularly in regard to religious freedom, educators must understand what they are required to protect.No one is asking individuals to memorize hundreds of dietary laws across all religions. Instead, a religiously literate person simply recognizes that many religious people, for a variety of reasons, follow the dietary customs of their faiths. Understanding how&nbsp;<a href="https://www.religiousfreedomcenter.org/grounding/identity/" target="_blank">religious identity is shaped</a>&nbsp;and how&nbsp;<a href="https://www.edweek.org/education/opinion-six-guidelines-for-teaching-about-religion/2016/04" target="_blank">religions are diverse and dynamic</a>&nbsp;not only allows religiously literate people to adapt to new traditions and practices, but also encourages empathy across difference. In this case, it may have been helpful for those involved to know that many Hebrew Israelites do not eat pork, but that is not critical information for respecting the student’s free exercise rights. What is crucial is the ability to discern religious identity and expression in the multitude of forms they take. To accomplish both, teachers, administrators and coaches must know and model First Amendment principles including religious literacy for their students.
