The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 9:30 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

At 8:23 p.m. CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Barnard to near Ellsworth to six miles south of Great Bend, moving east at 35 mph.

Interstate 135 between mile markers 67 and 95.

Interstate 70 between mile markers 211 and 266.

The Tri-Rivers Fair Board announced early this evening that the Paramount Concert scheduled for after tonight's demolition derby has been moved to the 4-H Building.

The fair board cited a concern about a storm that looks to be moving into the area at about the time the concert was scheduled to begin (approximately 9 p.m.)

The free concert is sponsored by Farmers Insurance, Joyce Volk Agency.

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for a Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on the last Friday of July. 

A total donation of $250 was presented to Kids in Crisis of Dickinson County. Kids in Crisis offers assistance for low-income youth living in Dickinson County. 

The day was organized by the MHS Employer of Choice committee.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has launched a survey to seek public input ahead of the 2021 Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE) Local Consult process. 

Participating in the survey gives KDOT insight on the public’s top transportation areas of focus and the ways in which communities across the state may be changing.

All Kansans are encouraged to participate in the short online survey by Aug. 22. On August 7, 1998, terrorist bombs at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania killed 224 people, including 12 Americans.

In 1782, Gen. George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart, a decoration to recognize merit in enlisted men and noncommissioned officers.

In 1942, U.S. and other allied forces landed at Guadalcanal, marking the start of the first major allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II. (Japanese forces abandoned the island the following February.)

Five years ago: An accident on a 17-story waterslide at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas, claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy. Jim Furyk became the first golfer to shoot a 58 in PGA Tour history during the Travelers Championship in Connecticut with a 12-under 58 in the final round. (Furyk finished tied for fifth at 11 under, three strokes behind winner Russell Knox.) At the Rio Games, U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky crushed her own world record in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:56.46.

One year ago: Thousands of bikers poured into the small South Dakota town of Sturgis for the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally despite fears that it could lead to a massive coronavirus outbreak. (Federal health officials later said the rally led to dozens of coronavirus cases in neighboring Minnesota; the Associated Press found that at least 290 people in 12 states tested positive for the coronavirus after attending the rally.) The military recovered the bodies of seven Marines and a Navy sailor who'd been killed when a Marine landing craft sank in hundreds of feet of water off the Southern California coast; another Marine had died after being rescued.

Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, the Health Department contact tracers are struggling to immediately contact those who are positive.

●One new death from COVID-19 since Wednesday, two new deaths this week.

●Variants have been identified in the 109 of 233 samples sent for sequencing.

●43 new cases of COVID-19, since Wednesday.

Saline County lost another two members of the community to COVID-19 this week, bringing the death toll in the county to 123.

Salina Regional Health Center reports they currently have 18 patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19. The majority of the patients are between 20 and 60 years old and most are residents of Saline County. The vaccination status of the hospitalized individuals is not available at this time.

There have been 43 new COVID-19 cases identified since our last update on Wednesday, making 135 new cases in the last seven days. The Saline County Health Department staff is actively monitoring 393 cases of COVID-19. There has been a total of 6855 confirmed cases, and at least 6339 people have recovered from COVID-19.

KDHE has identified variants in 109 of the 233 specimens sent from Saline County for sequencing.At least 22,931 people have been vaccinated in Saline County. This accounts for approximately 42.3 percent of the total population and an increase of 1.1 percent over the previous week.

Why are we not getting vaccine breakthrough numbers? Your Saline County Health Department's goal is to provide the public with the most accurate information, with maximum disclosure, and minimum delay.

Due to the current surge in cases and hospitalizations, some cases have had to be sent to KDHE for investigation and we are unable to provide you with up-to-date and accurate numbers at this time.

While vaccine breakthrough has been identified in around one percent of positive cases, the vast majority of those cases are mild or asymptomatic. Saline County: 43 new COVID-19 cases, 1 death since Wednesday

TOPEKA - A Lincoln County couple has just claimed an instant ticket prize worth $75,000! 

The players, who wished to remain anonymous, won the prize on the Kansas Lottery’s new $10 Hit It Big game.

The winners said they purchase tickets several times a week, and on this trip, picked up three Hit It Big tickets. It was the first ticket they scratched that won the couple the first top prize on the game!

Crimestoppers seeks tips about stolen stop signs

Police are investigating the theft of $120 worth of items from an unlocked vehicle parked at a west Salina tavern.

A 33-year-old Salina man told police that someone stole the items from his unlocked vehicle while it was parked at Hank's Tavern, 116 S. Broadway Boulevard, Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said this morning.

Items stolen include a set of Earbuds, $50 in cash, and black hat with a Batman logo on it.

Four storage units in southwest Salina were damaged earlier this week.

Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said this morning that sometime between 12:01 a.m. Monday and 10 p.m. Wednesday, someone cut the locks off of four storage units at KO Storage, 2122 Centennial Road. Additionally, the doors on two of the units were bent and bowed, he said.

Villanueva said it appeared that at least two of the units were entered. He said KO management was contacting the people who rent the four units to determine whether any items were stolen.

A Spring Hill man who made an overnight stop in Salina is out more than $4,200 worth of items after someone got into an unlocked trailer he was pulling behind his vehicle.

The 60-year-old man told police that sometime between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday, someone got into the unlocked trailer  while it was parked at the Baymont Inn, 1740 W. Crawford Street, Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said this morning.

Items stolen included a brown Gibson guitar with a brown strap valued at $3,000, an Apple Pro laptop valued at $1,000, and miscellaneous other items, Villanueva said. Total loss was estimated at $4,205.

More than $4,200 worth of items stolen from unlocked trailer

Police want to talk with the man who allegedly attempted to break into a home in north Salina Thursday morning.

Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said this morning that a 19-year-old woman heard a noise outside her residence in the 700 block of West Woodland at approximately 11:18 a.m. Thursday. When she looked out, she saw a man trying to open the window.

The woman screamed at the man, who fled. He attempted to go into an neighbor's yard and she told him he didn't belong there either, Villanueva said. When the man took off, the woman got in her car and followed him, taking photos of him along the way.

The man was described as being in his mid-20s, 5'8" with a slender build, and dyed blonde hair, Villanueva said. Additionally, the man was wearing a white shirt and khaki shorts, and is believed to have a tattoo on his right arm.

Police looking for man after attempted break in Thursday morning

ASSARIA - A Salina man was arrested Thursday afternoon after the car he was driving went off an exit ramp and launched over an overpass on Interstate 135.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Matthew Griffin, 45, of Salina, was northbound on I-135 in a Ford Fusion when he began driving up the Assaria exit ramp south of Salina, then onto the grassy area between the exit ramp and the highway. 

Soldan said the car struck the guardrail along the south side of Assaria Road and launched over the road, finally coming to a stop in the median of I-135 north of the exit.

An acquaintance called the sheriff's office to report that Griffin had been drinking and was driving in excess of 100 mph, but the accident occurred before deputies could locate him, Soldan said.

Griffin was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of a head laceration and then was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

●Driving under the influence of alcohol

The Fusion was disabled and had to be towed.

Salina man arrested after car launches over I-135 overpass

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court has appointed District Judge Marilyn Wilder to serve as chief judge of the Ninth Judicial District from Sept. 19 through Dec. 31, 2021.

Wilder succeeds Chief Judge Joe Dickinson, who will retire Sept,18.

The Ninth Judicial District is composed of Harvey and McPherson counties. “We appreciate that Judge Wilder is willing to take on the additional responsibilities of chief judge and provide continuity in capable leadership in the 9th Judicial District,” said Marla Luckert, chief justice of the Supreme Court. “We look forward to working with her in this new capacity.”

Wilder has been a judge in the 9th Judicial District since 2015.

"I am honored to have been chosen by the Kansas Supreme Court to serve in this role," Wilder said. “We have a fantastic team of employees in our district, and I look forward to working with them as we continue to adapt to changes and serve our community.”

Wilder graduated from Taylor University in Indiana and Indiana University School of Law. She worked in a private practice before she was appointed judge in 2015. Each of Kansas’ 31 judicial districts has a chief judge who, in addition to his or her judicial responsibilities, has general control over case assignments within the district, as well as general supervisory authority over the administrative and clerical functions of the court.

My dad passed away about a year ago, but he left my mom in really good shape financially. They never had any consumer debt, the house is paid for, and they had about $1 million in assets. Dad also left her a $500,000 trust. Mom is going to be 60 next year. She is in good health, but considering her age and financial situation, do you think she needs long-term care insurance?

I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. Losing a spouse, or a father, is tough at any age. The good news is your dad did a great job of planning to take care of your mom. Many musicians and instruments have come and gone, but the Salina Municipal Band has remained a mainstay in the community for more than 100 years.

The band concluded its 137th season as it often does, riding on a trailer and performing in the Tri-Rivers Fair Parade Tuesday evening. The band also has performed at the Smoky Hill River Festival and occasionally for other events.

Director Tom Miles told Salina Post that band members come from a variety of ages, backgrounds, and locations, some driving up to 50 miles to rehearse and perform. Miles, himself, drives over from Abilene.

Miles said band members also have differing musical abilities.

"Some have played with the Salina Symphony. Others are relatively new to their instruments," he said.

The one thing the 40 members have in common, however, is their love of making music.

During its summer performance season, the band typically plays on Tuesday evenings on the Eric Stein Stage in Salina's Oakdale Park. The band also does one exchange performance with the Abilene Municipal Band. The concerts are open to the public at no charge.

The Salina Municipal Band rehearses on the third floor of Memorial Hall. Miles said that each week he selects 12 pieces of music to perform from the band's library of more than 300 songs. The selections are a mixture of musical types, including marches, overtures, Broadway, sacred, Latin, and pop music.

The band is funded by the City of Salina, which provides the rehearsal space and some money. Miles said part of the money is used  for the purchase of music, which he buys every other year. Some of the funds also are used for the upkeep of a few band-owned instruments. Many of the musicians, however, bring their own instruments to play, he said.
