TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court has appointed District Judge Benjamin Sexton to serve as chief judge of the 8th Judicial District from Aug. 22 through Dec. 31.

Sexton succeeds Chief Judge Michael Powers, who will retire Aug. 20.

The 8th Judicial District is composed of Dickinson, Geary, Marion, and Morris counties. “We appreciate that Judge Sexton is willing to take on the additional responsibilities of chief judge and provide continuity in capable leadership in the 8th Judicial District,” said Marla Luckert, chief justice of the Supreme Court. “We look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”

Sexton has been a judge in the 8th Judicial District since 2001.

"I am very humbled by the opportunity to serve as chief judge and consider myself very lucky to be able to work with all the outstanding judges, staff, and clerks in the 8th judicial district," Sexton said.

Sexton graduated from Kansas State University and Washburn University School of Law. He worked as a prosecutor and in private practice before he was appointed judge in 2001. Each of Kansas’ 31 judicial districts has a chief judge who, in addition to his or her judicial responsibilities, has general control over case assignments within the district, as well as general supervisory authority over the administrative and clerical functions of the court.

CLAY COUNTY—A Salina woman died in an accident just before 9 a.m. Wednesday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Ford Mustang driven by Kimberly S. Hinkle, 49, was westbound on U.S. Highway 24 seven miles west of Clay Center.

The Mustang collided&nbsp; with an eastbound 2022 Freightliner semi driven by Jesse R.&nbsp;Ikobe, 23, Independence, Mo., in the eastbound lanes.

Hinkle was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

Ikobe and a passenger were not transported for treatment. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Salina woman dies after crash with a semi

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of two additional stop signs.

Sometime over the weekend, four stop signs were stolen along Kansas Highway 140 (K-140) west of Salina. The stop signs were stolen Saturday or Sunday from the K-140 intersections with W. Crawford Street, S. Hohneck Road, S. Link Road, and W. Schilling Road, Undersheriff Brent Melander said on Monday. 

This morning, Melander said that two additional stop signs were reported stolen on Wednesday. One was at S. Burma Road and W. Magnolia Road. The other was at S. Link Road and W. Water Well Road. They were the property of Saline County.

The City of Salina released this morning the following statement concerning allegations made against Salina Fire Department personnel in a KWCH report Wednesday night.

The City of Salina is aware of allegations relating to the Salina Fire Department conveyed in a recent news story that aired on KWCH. Such allegations are being taken very seriously by the City of Salina.

City legal counsel previously engaged BKD CPAs &amp; Advisors to perform forensic accounting services and prepare a forensic accounting report (“Report”). The Report is scheduled to be released and presented to the Salina City Commission by BKD on Monday, August 16, 2021.

To preserve the integrity of potential administrative action(s) regarding specific employees, no allegations or findings regarding specific employees will be discussed during the presentation, nor will such detail be disclosed by the Report.

In Wednesday night's <a href="https://www.kwch.com/2021/08/05/ff12-investigation-accusations-time-card-fraud-within-salina-fire-department/">Factfinder 12 report</a> by Alex Flippin, KWCH claims that its investigation, after hearing of time fraud from former Salina firefighter Tim LePage, "could have cost taxpayers into the hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Additionally, city officials were made aware of the time fraud accusations in October 2019, the KWCH report states.

LePage retired from the Salina Fire Department in July after 22 years of service. He was placed on leave until his retirement because of his reporting to city officials about the alleged time fraud, he said in the KWCH report.

Extension offers 6-part online retirement planning series

I love making chicken salad, and I have about 27 different ways I do it. Some with pecans and some with almonds, some with green onions and some with red. But regardless of which combination I choose, there are a few staple ingredients that I add to every batch. After all, if you don’t have chicken, nuts, sauce, fruit and onion, it’s not going to be chicken salad!

Life balance works the same way. As a business coach, speaker and author, I’ve been studying and writing about life balance for over a decade. And I’ve found that these five things are nonnegotiable if you want to feel balanced.

Feeling balanced starts with getting enough sleep. The average American gets far less than the necessary seven to nine hours every night, and the consequences of “being tired all the time” are devastating to our mental and physical health.

Being rested, on the other hand, allows you to be present, energetic and alert. You’ll be able to get more done, have space for relationships, and enjoy your life. Do whatever it takes to make sleep a priority—starting&nbsp;tonight.

We were created to be in deep, life-giving relationships. Social connections improve the quality of your life, and they also have a direct correlation with reduced health issues, less depression and a longer life-span.

But you don’t need research to tell you something you already know: People matter! If you want to have balance, you have to be intentional about connecting with others.

Whether it’s family helping with childcare or team members helping with work projects, we all need help if we want to feel balanced. No one can do it all on their own.&nbsp;

If you don’t have family nearby or room in the budget for childcare, there are still creative ways to get help. For example, two of my friends swap babysitting nights so the other couple can have a date night. Look to your community for resources, and don’t be too proud to ask for help.

According to a poll done by Gallup, 85% of employees worldwide aren’t engaged in their jobs. That’s crazy! If you dread your job, I want you to hear me: You will never feel balanced if you’re spending your one life doing something you hate.

WRIGHT: A recipe for life balance

Kansas Wesleyan University has announced six new additions to its Board of Trustees (BOT). The board also elected its officers for the upcoming year.

The new trustees are Nadim Haddad ’65 (Oakton, Va.), Patricia (Trish) Marietta ’71 (Salina, Kan.), Brett Murray ’03 (Limon, Colo.), Jane Philbrick ’80 (Goodland, Kan.), Ed Spears ’89 (Frisco, Texas) and Charles Spencer (Maryland ’84/Kansas City, Mo.).

“We are so fortunate to have these individuals join the Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president. “All six of them have demonstrated leadership in their respective areas and a true interest in the disciplines that will help take our university to the next level. They will make excellent additions to the Board of Trustees.”

The board’s new officers are led by chair Barry Weis ’10, a local resident and director of Sales and Support at Blue Beacon Truck Wash. Jeffrey H. Bieber ’71 (Castle Rock, Colo.) will be the immediate past chair, while Steve Michel (Salina, Kan.) is the board’s vice chair. Emily-May Richards (Peoria, Ariz.) is the treasurer and Marilyn Foster Kirk ’68 (Evanston, Ill.) is the secretary.

Jon Stark (Salina) was recognized as an outgoing board member, following a successful term that included three years as the treasurer.

Nadim Haddad ’65 – Oakton, Va.

A long-time engineer and technical director for companies such as IBM, Loral, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems, Haddad was instrumental in the development of radiation-hardened technology for the Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) program.

He was recognized in 2012 as a fellow for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and is a member of the Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) and the Electron Devices Society (EDS), where he serves as a distinguished lecturer.

Haddad has worked as an active participant in several technology forums, has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications and is credited with 26 inventions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from KWU and a master’s in electrical engineering from Michigan State (’66).

Patricia (Trish) Marietta ’71 – Salina

The most local of KWU’s new trustees, Marietta owns a holistic health business in the community. She serves as a board member for Salina’s Habitat for Humanity, and has long-running connections to KWU. Her uncle, T.W. Roach, started the Kansas Wesleyan Business College and was elected university president in 1903 (Roach Street in Salina bears his name).

Marietta holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical chemistry.

Brett Murray ’03 – Limon, Colo.

Murray is the chief operating officer and president for MERCO LLC. He is a former board member of Virtus Oil and Gas Corporation, where he served as chief operating officer and executive vice president for six years. Murray has more than sixteen years of experience in the energy industry for some of the most reputable companies in the field.

At KWU, Murray earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. He was a winner of the major’s Outstanding Communications Student honor. He was a varsity letterman in basketball, where he was a member of the 2000 KCAC and NSCAA champions. Murray was involved with student council and served as the president of the junior class.

Philbrick joins KWU’s board for the second time, following a previous 2011-20 term. During her previous tenure, she served two years as the board’s secretary, was the chair of the Committee on Trustees, the vice chair of the Committee on Academic Affairs and a member of the Committee on Finance and Operations. Her community involvement includes serving on the board of the Sherman County Historical Society and as a volunteer for the High Plains Museum.

Philbrick holds a bachelor’s degree in history from KWU. She and her husband currently manage their own farming business (JBP Inc.), and she has spent time as an instructor at Northwest Kansas Technology College in Goodland.

Spears earned his degree in business administration and finance from KWU, and his J.D. from Texas A&amp;M’s School of Law. He has been a practicing attorney for 23 years, with a primary area of focus on criminal defense and personal injury. Spears is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, the National Defense Lawyers Association and the Texas Bail Bond Board. His interests include diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as athletics.

Charles Spencer (Maryland ’84) – Kansas City, Mo.

Spencer is a senior banking executive with more than 30 years of experience in the areas of credit underwriting, risk and credit review. During his career, he has managed senior executive and board-level reporting for entire credit review departments for financial institutions with assets in excess of $6 billion.

Since May 2012, Spencer has been the director of credit review at National Bank Holdings, Inc.

Spencer holds a bachelor’s in economics from Maryland and a professional banking diploma from the American Institute of Banking (Washington, D.C.).

IONIA - A small earthquake shook southwestern Jewell County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 3.0 magnitude quake struck northwest of Ionia at 4:22 a.m. Wednesday. The quake was centered at I Road, just west of 80 Road.

Kansas forts and posts during the Civil War is the topic of the upcoming free Zoom presentation hosted by the Smoky Hill Museum.

What purposes did they serve and what happened to them?

Pollard, a former Kansan, earned a Master of Science degree in journalism from the University of Kansas. He’s an active historian and an award-winning author.

The Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue, is a nationally accredited history museum, in the heart of downtown Salina. This free museum is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.&nbsp;

From city dwellers to country folk, infants to at least&nbsp;octogenarian, hundreds of people lined Santa Fe Avenue Tuesday evening for the 2021 Tri-Rivers Fair Parade.

Despite the smoke from western wildfires hanging in the air, it was a lovely evening for a parade, with a north breeze and temperatures in the 80s.

All sorts of people turn out for Tri-Rivers Fair parade downtown

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

●73 cases of vaccine breakthrough have been identified in the 6812 positive COVID-19 cases.

●Vaccination and re-infection status of those hospitalized remains unavailable at this time.

●27 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, ranging in age from 32 to 95.

●56 new cases of COVID-19 since Monday.

●93 variants were identified in the 217 samples sent from Saline County to KDHE for sequencing.

We are saddened to report one new death to COVID-19. This brings the total number of people in our community who have lost their lives to this deadly virus to 122.

Salina Regional Health Center reports they currently have 27 patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19, ranging in age from 32 to 95.

There have been 56 new COVID-19 cases identified since our last update on Monday, making 92 new cases in the past five days. The Saline County Health Department staff is actively monitoring 351 cases of COVID-19. There has been a total of 6812 confirmed cases, and at least 6339 people have recovered from COVID-19.

KDHE has identified variants in 93 of the 217 specimens sent from Saline County for sequencing.

At least 22,931 people (42.3 percent of the population) have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Saline County, an increase of 547 (1.1 percent of the population) over the last week. The Saline County Health Department has identified 73 cases of vaccine breakthrough in the 6812 COVID-19 cases in Saline County.

Due to the overwhelming number of new cases and hospitalizations, vaccination/ re-infection rates are not available at this time. The Saline County Health Department and Salina Regional Health Center thank you for your patience and understanding.

Over the last four decades, Fleck has made a point of boldly going where no banjo player has gone before, a musical journey that has earned him 15 Grammys in nine different fields, including country, pop, jazz, instrumental, classical, and world music. But his roots are in bluegrass, and that’s where he returns with his first bluegrass tour in 24 years, My Bluegrass Heart.

My Bluegrass Heart is the third chapter of a trilogy which began with the 1988 album, Drive, and continued in 1991 with The Bluegrass Sessions. It will release this fall on BMG.

The second tour for the project features a who's who of some of the greatest instrumentalists in bluegrass music’s history. Sometimes known as the Telluride House Band, sometimes as the Drive Band, containing four fifths of Strength in Numbers, half of New Grass Revival, and half of Goat Rodeo, these musicians have been intertwining in a myriad of ways since the early 1980s and all have been major movers in the forward progression of acoustic music to the present day.

Included are mandolinist Sam Bush, fiddler Stuart Duncan, dobro player Jerry Douglas, bassist Edgar Meyer, and Bryan Sutton on guitar.

"I’m thrilled to be reunited with my brothers and lifelong collaborators, it has been way too long since we have toured together. And I love their contributions to My Bluegrass Heart. They are the heart of the album!" said Fleck.

A south Salina store is checking its register keys to make sure all are accounted for after someone opened a register and took $1,700 worth of $20 bills Tuesday night.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that at approximately 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, a subject went to the register in the electronics department at Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street, and removed 85 $20 bills. The entry into the register was not forced, he said.

Based on surveillance video, the suspect is described as a Black male wearing a light blue shirt, blue jeans, a black face mask, and a gray hat, Hanus said. The suspect is not believed to be employed at the store.

It is believed that the suspect left the Walmart parking lot in a white van, however, additional surveillance video is being reviewed to verify that, Hanus said.
