Saline County: 1 death, 43 new COVID-19 cases since Wednesday

With the annual Labor Day holiday comes multiple local government closings.

Both City of Salina and Saline County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Also, the city commission will not meet on Monday because of the holiday.

All city and county offices and facilities will return to regular hours on Tuesday.

Additionally, crews will be providing regularly scheduled refuse collection on Monday, however, the landfill will close at 2 p.m. and the Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center, Household Hazardous Waste and General Services facilities will be closed. All normal hours of operation will resume Tuesday.

The Salina Public Library also will be closed on Monday.

Labor Day closings for Monday

Artist Tomiyo Tajiri believes in passing kindness on to others. 

"Seeing from Within," featuring Tajiri and her work, will be at this month's First Friday event at the Flower Nook, 208 E. Iron Avenue. The event is scheduled for 4:30-7 p.m. today and is open to the public.

Tajiri is a native Japanese Yasashii artist. The term "Yasashii" means "gentle and kindness" in Japanese and is believed to promote healings from any pain and suffering with the use of the patterns and designs. Tajiri uses the techniques to imprint positive feeling.

“I believe people have power so we can pass our own kindness to others,” she said.

Tajiri also places a high importance on the idea of reconnecting with nature to elevate one’s mood. 

“I like natural. I like nature. I like the plants and the flowers,” she said, explaining that this is why she likes to honor and recreate the natural world in her origami, and she is willing to spend hours on the meticulous folds of the paper flowers and animals she brings to life. 

The artist says the most important aspect of her creations is touch.

She works out design and color in her mind but relies on touch to bring her creations into being. 

“My hand wants something to touch. That’s very important to me,” she said.

Washi is a fine paper made from the fibers of a Gampi tree, the Mitsumata shrub, and Kozo tree. It is more earth conscious then paper made from pulp; it cleans the air and enriches the heart. She uses the traditional Washi paper to create accessories, decorations, clothing and more.

Although legally blind, Tajiri has given demonstrations and training classes in New York, Colorado, California, and Kansas. 

Tajiri has lost the ability to recognize or differentiate colors in her visual field. As her peripheral vision began to darken and shrink with time, she now has only a pinhole of vision remaining in the center.

“Although I am almost total blind, I am happy. I appreciate all the people in my life, including God, and touching and feeling things with my hands brings great comfort and happiness to me as well," she said. "My art provides me with a way to share the culture of Japan with others as it brings harmony to people and unites them in ways they never imagined.”

Tajiri is a member of the Wichita Envision Program and is scheduled to be joined at the First Friday event by colleague Charlie Wilks, according to information from The Flower Nook.

Envision's mission is to improve the quality of life and provide inspiration and opportunity for people who are blind or visually impaired through employment, outreach, rehabilitation, education and research.

The Flower Nook has celebrated the ritual of First Friday for several years by offering new and unique exhibits each month that explore the creative process. Although the art remains at the Nook for a month at a time, the benefit of attending the First Friday’s 4:30-7 p.m. event is to meet the artist while browsing the variety of artisan creations. 

In addition to each month's new backwall showcase, The Flower Nook has more than 15 regional artisan which makes the store a one of a kind experience for the community, the Nook noted in a news release.

Storms rumble through area, drop beneficial rain

A bicyclist suffered minor injuries when he was hit by a car late Wednesday afternoon in central Salina.

Morgan Austin, 32, of Salina, was southbound on Quincy Street and turning left onto E. Cloud Street in a 2016 Hyundai four-door car when she struck an eastbound bicyclist, Christopher Mikesell, 38, of Salina, who was attempting to turn north onto Quincy Street, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. The accident occurred at approximately 5:52 p.m. Wednesday.

Mikesell, who was riding a Diamondback Rally Road Bike, suffered minor injuries, but refused treatment, Hanus said.

Austin was cited for failure to yield, Hanus said.

A rural Saline County man who in late August reported being the victim of residential burglary was, himself, arrested in connection to a burglary at a business just south of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that someone broke into a fenced-in area at HABCO, Inc., 248 E. Berg Road earlier this month and got into three vehicles and three enclosed trailers there. Two tablets were taken from two of the vehicles and a battery was taken from the third. Locks were cut off the three trailers and multiple tools were taken, he said. 

A deputy reviewing surveillance video thought he recognized the alleged burglar as Jeremy Carnes, 40, of rural Saline County, as he recognized the man's clothes and had taken a burglary report from him in late August.

Deputies paid a visit to Carnes at his residence in the 400 block of E. Water Well Road and noticed an item that appeared to be one of the items stolen from HABCO, Soldan said. A search warrant was obtained for the residence. A large number of the stolen items were recovered from Carnes' residence, Soldan said.

Carnes was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

People’s Choice Award special promo encourages families to enjoy SculptureTour

SculptureTour Salina has&nbsp; a special back-to-school promotion&nbsp; underway in September.

"We want to encourage families of elementary age children to be introduced to our 2021 exhibition downtown and are offering an incentive this month," SculptureTour Salina noted in a news release.

 The promotion also allows SculptureTour Salina to support an elementary level art program in the area through a prize drawing.

How it works ●Families go downtown and pick up SculptureTour Salina brochure/ballots – one for each person who is touring the exhibition.

●Then, the families can enjoy looking at the art, on artist loan from across the country. 

●At the end, each person – any age – completes a ballot, voting for their favorite sculpture. For this promotion, the name of the elementary school they want to support in the drawing must be written on each ballot.

●Once complete, all ballots need to be placed in one of the silver boxes at the mid-block crosswalks on Santa Fe, taken to a participating downtown business, or dropped off at 120 W. Ash, the offices of Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, Visit Salina, and Salina Downtown, Inc.

Through Sept. 30, 2021, all ballots that bear the name of an area elementary school will be placed into a drawing. One ballot with a school shown, will be drawn to receive $100 for their art department. Two ballots from the ‘12 &amp; under’ age category will be drawn, and those voters will each receive a $25 Smoky Hill Silver Gift Certificate as a prize as well. Smoky Hill Silver Gift Certificates are accepted at hundreds of chamber member businesses.

“We are so excited to announce this promotion, which we hope will not only encourage many to enjoy this family-friendly arts experience in Salina, but also emphasize the importance of arts education at the elementary level,” said Sylvia Rice, a member of the SculptureTour Salina Committee, and director of Visit Salina at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

The People’s Choice Award is an integral part of the SculptureTour Salina program. Each year, ballots are cast indicated a that voter’s favorite sculpture. The artwork receiving the most votes by Dec. 31, is purchased by the City of Salina, at its listed price, up to $15,000. The sculpture then is placed somewhere in a public location to be enjoyed as part of Salina’s permanent art collection.

Flood watch issued for Marion, McPherson counties

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flash flood watch in effect through Saturday afternoon for Dickinson County.

Thunderstorms will continue across the area through the morning  hours today. Up to five inches of rain has already fallen across   areas near and just south of Interstate 70.

Thunderstorms are also expected tonight with several inches of additional rainfall possible.

Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

What are your views on teaching children good work habits? Many of our friends don’t require their kids to help out or work around the house, but we both strongly feel that instilling a strong work ethic early in life is one of the best things you can do as a parent for your children.

I’m so glad you both feel that way. Our culture has made many great advances to ensure the happiness and well-being of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/how-to-be-a-good-dad" target="_blank">children</a>. But too many parents today are so centered on what their children&nbsp;want&nbsp;that they have lost perspective on what their children&nbsp;need.

Perspective, or looking at life over time, demands that you teach children to work.&nbsp;Teaching a child to work is not child abuse.&nbsp;We teach them to work not for our benefit, but because it gives them dignity in a job well done&nbsp;today&nbsp;and&nbsp;the tools and character to win as adults in the future.

In my mind, children should be taught to work just like you’d teach them to bathe or brush their teeth—as a necessary life skill. An adult who has no clue how to tackle a job and finish it with pride is every bit as debilitated as an adult with body odor or green teeth. If your child graduates from high school, and his or her only skill set consists of playing video games, eating fast food and believing the world owes them something, you’ve set up your child to fail.

Another&nbsp;benefit of teaching a child the wonder of work&nbsp;is they may grow to&nbsp;lose a little respect for those who refuse to work. I’m not talking about folks who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/health-insurance-for-unemployed" target="_blank">lost jobs</a>&nbsp;due to unforeseen circumstances and are trying to get back on their feet, or someone who genuinely cannot work. I’m talking about folks who&nbsp;refuse&nbsp;to look for, or accept, gainful employment.

My wife and I noticed that our kids, as they grew older, didn’t pursue&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/helping-your-child-develop-healthy-relationships" target="_blank">relationships</a>&nbsp;with people who didn’t understand the value of work and demonstrate the character traits of mature, hardworking people. And that was wonderful news to us!

Today is Friday, Sept. 3, the 246th day of 2021. There are 119 days left in the year. 

On Sept. 3, 1939, Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany, two days after the Nazi invasion of Poland; in a radio address, Britain's King George VI said, "With God's help, we shall prevail." The same day, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the British liner SS Athenia some 250 miles off the Irish coast, killing more than 100 out of the 1,400 or so people on board. 

In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson and his crew aboard the Half Moon entered present-day New York Harbor and began sailing up the river that now bears his name. (They reached present-day Albany before turning back.) 

In 1783, representatives of the United States and Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the Revolutionary War.

In 1943, Allied forces invaded Italy during World War II, the same day Italian officials signed a secret armistice with the Allies. 

In 1976, America's Viking 2 lander touched down on Mars to take the first close-up, color photographs of the red planet's surface.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump visited the Great Faith Ministries International, a predominantly Black church in Detroit, to call for a "civil rights agenda for our time." Authorities in Minnesota said they had identified the remains of Jacob Wetterling, an 11-year-old boy kidnapped by a masked gunman in October 1989 near his home in St. Joseph; the case was solved when a man confessed to sexually assaulting and killing the boy.

One year ago: A report in The Atlantic detailed multiple instances of President Donald Trump making disparaging remarks about members of the U.S. military who had been captured or killed; Trump emphatically denied making the comments, many of which were confirmed by The Associated Press. In a series of tweets, Trump said people who voted early by mail should also show up at their polling places on Election Day and vote again if their ballots hadn't been counted; experts said the suggestion would lead to chaos and long lines. Self-described anti-fascist Michael Reinoehl, the suspect in the slaying of a right-wing protester in Portland, Oregon, the previous weekend, was fatally shot by federal agents who said he had pulled a gun as they tried to arrest him near Lacey, Washington. Facebook said it would restrict new political ads in the week before the election and remove posts that conveyed misinformation about COVID-19 and voting.

UPDATE: Tornado watch canceled for our area

After cancellation last year and a delay this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Smoky Hill River Festival was off to its usual start Thursday evening: Festival Jam.

Sponsored by SM Hanson Music, the multi-band concert that has kicked off the Smoky Hill River Festival for 35 years began as it usually does: with people in lawn chairs and on blankets gathered around the Eric Stein Stage in Salina's Oakdale Park to hear 16 bands of varying genres.

Each band was to have 15 minutes on stage, including setup, playing and exiting, Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, Inc., told Salina Post in a July 22 story.

However, with lightning-laden thunderstorms rolling into the Salina area, the concert was called part way through the performance.

The Smoky Hill River Festival continues Friday, with gates opening to the general public at 10 a.m. 

If you haven't already gotten your festival admission wrist band, you can purchase a multi-day wrist band for $20 or a single-day wrist band for $10 at most festival entrances. Children age 11 and under are admitted at no charge, according to information from the river festival <a href="https://www.riverfestival.com/">website</a>.

 </figure>By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostAfter cancellation last year and a delay this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Smoky Hill River Festival was off to its usual start Thursday evening: Festival Jam.Mother Nature, however, had other plans.Sponsored by SM Hanson Music, the multi-band concert that has kicked off the Smoky Hill River Festival for 35 years began as it usually does: with people in lawn chairs and on blankets gathered around the Eric Stein Stage in Salina's Oakdale Park to hear 16 bands of varying genres.Each band was to have 15 minutes on stage, including setup, playing and exiting, Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, Inc., told Salina Post in a July 22 story.However, with lightning-laden thunderstorms rolling into the Salina area, the concert was called part way through the performance.The Smoky Hill River Festival continues Friday, with gates opening to the general public at 10 a.m. If you haven't already gotten your festival admission wrist band, you can purchase a multi-day wrist band for $20 or a single-day wrist band for $10 at most festival entrances. Children age 11 and under are admitted at no charge, according to information from the river festival <a href="https://www.riverfestival.com/">website</a>.

Festival Jam called off due to weather

Despite the potential for threatening weather, hundreds of people turned out along the tracks in north Salina to catch a glimpse of Union Pacific's Big Boy this evening.

The world's largest steam locomotive rolled into Salina a tad bit late, just as the darkening clouds began to sprinkle. That, however, did not dissuade young and old who were gathered along the tracks for as far as the eye could see. They had come from all over the area and they were determined to see No. 4014.

For some, this was their first time to see the giant locomotive. Others, however, were there for an encore, having attended Big Boy's visit to Salina in 2019.

Big Boy is scheduled for an overnight stop in Salina near the old Union Pacific depot. The Union Pacific crew will fire up the locomotive Friday morning for a 9 a.m. schedule departure.

Big Boy is scheduled to stop in Ellsworth at the Lincoln Avenue crossing from 10:15-10:35 a.m. Friday and in Wilson at the Avenue E crossing from 11:20 a.m.-12:05 p.m.

The locomotive began The Big Boy 2021 Tour on Aug. 5 in Cheyenne, Wyo., to celebrate railroad heritage and the communities Union Pacific serves, the company noted on its website. The tour is scheduled to conclude in Cheyenne, Wyo., on Tuesday.

Local, area bodies of water under advisories for blue-green algae

In 2000, record heat continued to broil parts of central and south-central Kansas. Salina was torched by its hottest temperature ever in the month of September when the mercury soared to a sizzling 110 degrees while Wichita baked in 108 degree heat. This tied Sept. 3, 1947, for the Air Capital's hottest temperature ever for September. In 1935, likely the most violent hurricane ever to strike the United States, the infamous Labor Day Hurricane roared through the Florida Keys with sustained winds around 200 mph. The hurricane produced a 15 foot storm surge, waves around 30 feet high, killed 408 people, and caused around $6 million damage. The barometric pressure at Long Key, Fla., dropped to 26.35 inches, the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded in the United States at that time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina was torched by its hottest temperature ever in the month of September when the mercury soared to a sizzling 110 degrees while Wichita baked in 108 degree heat. This tied Sept. 3, 1947, for the Air Capital's hottest temperature ever for September. In 1935, likely the most violent hurricane ever to strike the United States, the infamous Labor Day Hurricane roared through the Florida Keys with sustained winds around 200 mph. The hurricane produced a 15 foot storm surge, waves around 30 feet high, killed 408 people, and caused around $6 million damage. The barometric pressure at Long Key, Fla., dropped to 26.35 inches, the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded in the United States at that time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for southern Lincoln County and Ellsworth County, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

At 5:06 p.m. CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Wilson to five miles northwest of Claflin, moving east-northeast at 45 mph.
