Because of the increased population of K-State Salina students, the stop at K-State Salina, 2310 Centennial, will once again be a regular stop on the CityGo Purple Route.&nbsp; Previously, this stop was by request only.

The Regular Route will stop at :40 after each hour each day during normal operating hours.&nbsp; Those hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.&nbsp; The Peak Route will stop at :10 after each hour, during peak times of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.&nbsp;

The unclassified summary of our five U.S. intelligence agencies (IC) view of the coronavirus origin was released. While this is a science question, not a political one, the report included much that should have ended the political claims that this was a bioweapon.

One function of our consulates is to maintain surveillance on other governments’ communications. This provides the background for the report statement “...the IC assesses China’s officials did not have foreknowledge of the virus before the initial outbreak of COVID-19 emerged.”

“The IC assesses that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, probably emerged and infected humans through an initial small-scale exposure that occurred no later than November 2019 with the first known cluster of COVID-19 cases arising in Wuhan, China in December 2019.”

In addition, “...the IC was able to reach broad agreement on several other key issues. We judge the virus was not developed as a biological weapon.” That sinks the biowarfare gain-in-function argument.

This is not surprising to people throughout Asia who remember that China suffered more casualties from biological warfare atrocities committed by Japan during World War II than all other world countries in history combined. This history, detailed in school books and on China television, makes such biowarfare less likely than Japan developing nuclear bombs today. &nbsp;

Four of the IC elements along with the National Intelligence Council concluded “...that the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection was most likely caused by natural exposure to an animal infected with it or a close progenitor virus—a virus that probably would be more than 99 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2.”

Only one IC element felt “...that the first human infection with SARS-CoV-2 most likely was the result of a laboratory-associated incident, probably involving experimentation, animal handling, or sampling by the Wuhan Institute of Virology.” The rationale for this counter opinion is not given, but it speaks of it as a lab accident. That one intelligence agency concurred that it was not a bioweapon.

The August 17, 2021 Bloomberg Businessweek goes back to describe how the Huanan market was closed down back in January 1, 2020 immediately after the recognition of this new disease. Beijing specialists “...ordered environmental samples to be collected from drains and other surfaces at the market. Some 585 specimens were tested, of which 33 turned out to be positive for SARS-CoV-2.... All but two of the positive specimens came from a cavernous and poorly-ventilated section of the market’s western wing, where many shops sold animals.” But which animals were in these sections?

Now a critical study was just published in the June 7, 2021 Scientific Reports that may provide evidence of which animals at the Wuhan animal market could have harbored the wild virus years earlier. It documented “...47,381 individuals from 38 species, including 31 protected species sold between May 2017 and November 2019 in Wuhan’s markets.” This was a study to identify sources of the tick-borne Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) disease. As a result, this submitted scientific paper was ignored and not published for over a year since editors did not recognize its importance in correlating the market animals with likely location of the disease transmission.

Research such as this, as well as backtracking of DNA changes in the evolving virus, may eventually answer how this virus jumped from animals to humans.

Meanwhile, many politicians have apparently failed to read the intelligence report and continue to spout conspiracy theories falsely claiming this coronavirus could only be manmade due to unique DNA sequences: “Well that was what Nobel Laureate Dr. Richard Baltimore called the smoking gun that shows this virus came from a lab, not from nature.”

But various politician's screeds indicate they have not read the latest from Dr. David (not Richard) Baltimore: “When I first saw the sequence of the furin cleavage site—as I've said, other beta coronaviruses don't have that site—it seemed to me a reasonable hypothesis that somebody had put it in there. Now, I don't know if that's true or not....”

Earlier assertions that other coronaviruses lack genetic code for certain chemicals (such as the furin cleavage sites) have now been disproved, with several wild coronaviruses having it.

The IC judges they will be unable to provide a more definitive explanation for the origin of COVID-19 unless new information allows them to determine the specific pathway for initial natural contact with an animal or to determine that a laboratory in Wuhan was handling SARS-CoV-2 or a close progenitor virus before COVID-19 emerged.

The IC—and the global scientific community—lacks clinical samples or a complete understanding of epidemiological data from the earliest COVID-19 cases.&nbsp; If we obtain information on the earliest cases that identified a location of interest or occupational exposure, it may alter our evaluation of hypotheses.

China’s cooperation most likely would be needed to reach a conclusive assessment of the origins of COVID-19.&nbsp; Beijing, however, continues to hinder the global investigation, resist sharing information and blame other countries, including the United States.&nbsp; These actions reflect, in part, China’s government’s own uncertainty about where an investigation could lead as well as its frustration the international community is using the issue to exert political pressure on China.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ED FRONTLINES: U.S. intelligence report says COVID-19 not a bioweapon

Today is Monday, Sept. 6, the 249th day of 2021. There are 116 days left in the year. 

On Sept. 6, 2006, President George W. Bush acknowledged for the first time that the CIA was running secret prisons overseas and said tough interrogation had forced terrorist leaders to reveal plots to attack the United States and its allies. 

In 1901, President William McKinley was shot and mortally wounded by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. (McKinley died eight days later; Czolgosz was executed on Oct. 29.) 

In 1909, American explorer Robert Peary sent a telegram from Indian Harbor, Labrador, announcing that he had reached the North Pole five months earlier. 

In 1943, 79 people were killed when a New York-bound Pennsylvania Railroad train derailed and crashed in Philadelphia.

Minor quake rattles part of Jewell County Sunday afternoon

MANHATTAN – Many Kansans look forward to the beautiful display of blooming peonies in spring, just before Memorial Day. Peonies also prove to be a favorite pick for gardeners because of how low maintenance they are.&nbsp;

“Though peonies can be left in place indefinitely, many gardeners wish to increase their plantings and use a process known as division to accomplish this,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham.&nbsp;

Division is the process of digging up previously planted plants and separating them into at least two sections at the root ball. Upham said this keeps plants healthy by spreading the blooms and preventing overcrowding, which naturally increases coverage.&nbsp;

Additionally, dividing helps prevent weak stems or bald patches. If either of these signs are present in the garden, it may be an indication it is time to divide, according to Upham. &nbsp;

However, he adds, not every plant is suitable for dividing. Perennials are most commonly divided, which makes peonies an ideal candidate. Traditionally, peonies are divided in the Fall.&nbsp;

“Peonies are essentially dormant by mid-August, even though the foliage is still green,” Upham said.&nbsp;

To divide peonies, first remove the foliage. Then the entire plant must be dug out. As much soil as possible will need to be washed off so the pink buds -- known as “eyes” -- are visible. Each division should have 3-4 buds. &nbsp;

&nbsp;When planting the new peony divisions, there are a few important factors to keep in mind:&nbsp;

●Ensure the peonies will receive at least a half-day of full sun, but the more sun, the better.

●There should be at least 2 feet between dwarf type peonies or 4 feet between standard types.

●The buds should be planted about 1 inch below the soil surface. If planted more than 2 inches deep, flowering may be delayed or prevented.

●Firm the soil as the plant is set in the ground. Unfirmed soil can settle and pull the plant down.

●Water after planting, and then water as necessary throughout the fall and winter in order to keep the soil moist.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To ensure the new peony divisions last through the winter, Upham suggests adding mulch. &nbsp;

“The alternate freezing and thawing that commonly occurs during Kansas winters can heave weakly rooted plants out of the ground,” he said. &nbsp;

Adding a mulch of straw, leaves, or compost after the soil freezes can prevent heaving and keep plants in prime condition during the harsh winter months. &nbsp;

“Remember, it is not the cold that harms these plants but the alternate freezing and thawing of the soil,” Upham said. &nbsp;

As long as these guidelines are followed, healthy peony divisions can be expected to rise in the spring. Upham said gardeners can expect peonies to return to their full bloom around three years after dividing.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

🎥Divide peonies this fall for beautiful blooming display next Memorial Day

MANHATTAN – Officials with Kansas State University’s Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development say that ‘making a difference’ is a common theme of those to be honored as Huck Boyd Leaders of the Year for 2021.&nbsp;

“We are pleased to recognize these innovative Kansans who make a difference by supporting our communities and our rural economy,” said Gary Doane of Downs, chair of the Board of Directors of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development. “They are excellent examples of value-added agriculture, entrepreneurship and community service.”&nbsp;

The winners will be honored during a hybrid Zoom/in-person awards presentation on Sept. 22 in Manhattan.&nbsp;

When the pandemic hit in 2020, community organizations in Beloit rallied to support local businesses.&nbsp;

Mitchell County community development director Heather Hartman joined Julia Rabe of the Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce and Colleen Eberle of the Solomon Valley Community Foundation in an initiative that became known as Mitchell County Strong.&nbsp;

The initiative included marketing gift certificates from local businesses, donating gift cards to needy families, creating a local disaster relief fund, offering free meals to locally nominated “hero” workers and more.&nbsp;

When Jennie Andersen showed her husband Scott a neat-looking candle she had seen online, he said: “I think I could make that.”&nbsp;

After a lot of research and experimenting, they were able to make soy-based candles which were so popular that the Andersens started their own business called Kansas Earth and Sky Candle Company in the historic Cyclone building on Main Street in Ellinwood.&nbsp;

The fragrances they use reflect rural Kansas themes with names such as Greener Pastures, Sweet Clover and Alfalfa, Fresh Baked, Dirt Therapy and more.&nbsp;

When daughters Tonya and Julie were kids, they would sell sweet corn from the Gaeddert family garden at the grandparents’ house in town.&nbsp;

Now married and with families of their own, Tonya Martisko and Julie Ball have taken the sweet corn business to a whole new level. They now operate 11 seasonal retail stands across central Kansas, plus selling at farmers’ markets.&nbsp;

In addition to operating a sunflower agritourism venue, they have donated more than 454,000 pounds of fresh produce to the Kansas Food Bank at the Cargill Cares complex in Wichita. Thaddeus Perry worked as a butcher and occasionally fried pork rinds in the backyard as a hobby.&nbsp;

The business has expanded with help from K-State Research and Extension specialists, the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s From the Land of Kansas program, and others.&nbsp;

Today, Perry’s Pork Rinds offers 13 flavors of pork rinds and has sent products to all 50 states and as far away as Saudi Arabia. The company was named the Kansas Department of Commerce Minority-Owned Business of the Year in sales and distribution. In 2015, she started brewing kombucha of her own, and it was so popular that she created her own business called Morning Light Kombucha. She has expanded her business with help from the Small Business Development Center, the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s From the Land of Kansas program, and Kombucha Brewers International.&nbsp;

“Music helps to keep you happy.”&nbsp;&nbsp;If that’s the case, the person who said it has been happy for a long time.&nbsp;

Today we’ll meet a&nbsp;rural&nbsp;Kansas man who has turned 99 years old and is still playing music. Thanks to Marilyn Jones for this story idea and to writer Julie Govert Walter and the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging for their related article.&nbsp;

Bob Delk turned 99 years old in August 2021. He grew up north of Peabody where he attended country school at the unincorporated community of Aulne, which today has a population of perhaps 50 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

After graduating from Peabody High School and getting married, he moved two miles north and two miles west of the place where he grew up and started farming with his wife’s family. “I did mechanic work, all the things a farmer has to do,” he said. He lived on that farm until 2016 when he moved to a house in Hillsboro.&nbsp;

Bob grew up in a musical family. “I idolized my dad,” Bob said. “He played violin and guitar. When I was 12, I decided I would like to play too. My dad showed me a few chords on a ukulele.”&nbsp;

The year was 1934. Eighty-seven years later, Bob is still playing.&nbsp;

In the early years, the Delk family had their own music group. Bob learned to play four string banjo and guitar. Father John played guitar and violin.&nbsp;

“My sister Betty played the piano and my mother Lydia played the flat guitar which is now called the dobro,” Bob said. They played at churches, schoolhouses, and community events in the region. Bob’s favorite musical group growing up was Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.&nbsp;

In 1943, Bob was invited to play with a group called the Peabody Plainsmen. That group, with various members, played together for some 60 years. Bob’s sister Betty would later marry one of the founders of the Peabody Plainsmen.&nbsp;

The group’s first gig was at the Marion County Fair in 1943. They performed at many communities across Kansas, including the Kansas State Fair. The group became widely known in central Kansas – so well known, in fact, that they attracted the attention of a namesake group in Texas.&nbsp;

“There was another group called the Plainsmen Quartet,” Bob said. “They wanted to sue us for taking their name but then they found out we had the name before they did, so we never heard any more about it.”&nbsp;

Later, Bob formed his own group called Bob and the Boys which lasted for some 25 years.&nbsp;

In 1976, Bob bought a Gibson Les Paul guitar that he still plays. Now he joins in jam sessions at the Hillsboro Senior Center and has played at the farmer’s market in Peabody.&nbsp;

Guitar is his instrument of choice. He plays songs from various genres such as gospel, big band, and country-western. He is not a singer but an instrumentalist. “I’ve always been part of a group,” he said. He has traveled with various groups throughout the central U.S, among them the Singspirationals and the Menno Brass Ensemble.&nbsp;

Bob and Aldene farmed and raised four children. In 1999, after 54 years of marriage, Aldene was killed in a tragic auto accident near Herington.&nbsp;

Bob later married Dorothy. They would travel to various festivals and events all over the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;and beyond. Before she succumbed to cancer in 2017, Dorothy would travel with Bob to south Texas in the winter where he would jam several times a day with musicians there. Bob now lives in his own home at Hillsboro and continues to drive.&nbsp;

The family musical tradition continues. “Some of my grandsons and great-grandsons play guitar and other instruments and sing, and my nephew plays keyboard and trumpet,” Bob said. “I love music, I love people and I love to visit.”&nbsp;

“Music helps to keep you happy,” Bob said. We commend Bob Delk and his family for making a difference with his musical talents.&nbsp;&nbsp;He’s been playing music and making people happy for a lifetime.&nbsp;

Here's your river festival forecast for Sunday

“Yes” and “no” are two simple words, but they carry a ton of weight. We live in a fast-paced world where we make hundreds of decisions every day about how to spend our time. And since time is our most precious resource, we should all be careful about how often we say yes.&nbsp;

Easier said than done, right? I want to give you five questions to ask yourself before making a time commitment so you can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/personal-growth/why-do-i-feel-so-busy-quiz" target="_blank">create a sense of balance in your life</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This is the first and most obvious question—but isn’t it surprising how we overcommit ourselves and try to do 47 things at once? Be realistic. If you aren’t available, say so up front. If you are available, move on to the next four questions.

Is this a priority for me right now?

Even if you are available, you need to consider if this opportunity is a priority for you in your current season of life. Is it important to you? Do you actually care about it? If not, don’t give it space on your calendar.

What will I not be able to do if I do this?

We rarely, if ever, ask this question. But every decision comes at a cost. For everything you say yes to, you have to say no to a lot of other things. If you say yes to coaching your child’s soccer team, it means you won’t be able to sit on the sidelines and just watch and cheer. Calculate the time and energy cost and be realistic about whether or not you want to go for it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

My default answer is to always say yes to new opportunities. But I learned early on in my marriage that this isn’t how my husband operates. It took me some time to understand how my decisions impact him—and not only him but our three kids as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Whether you’re single, married, with kids or without, think through how this decision will impact your closest relationships. Will you see less of your friends? Will your kids have to come with you to this new event or do you need to find a babysitter? I encourage you to communicate clearly with your spouse before making big time commitments.

So many things sound like a fantastic idea in the moment. Hosting the PTA at my house on Sunday nights? Sure! Attending a conference the weekend before Thanksgiving? Absolutely!

Don’t ask yourself if you want to do it right now — ask yourself if you’ll want to do it then. Will you really want to have people in your house every Sunday night? Is it a good idea to be out of town the weekend before you’re hosting family for the holidays? Framing it this way helps you avoid making decisions you’ll eventually regret.

I hope these five questions help you be more intentional with your time. I can guarantee making wise decisions will allow you to feel balanced and confident. After all, you only have this one precious life. You get to decide how to live it!

In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford escaped an attempt on his life by Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a disciple of Charles Manson, in Sacramento, California.
