Virtual Lunch & Learn: Eisenhower, atomic energy

It is not enough to take this weapon out of the hands of the soldiers. It must be put into the hands of those who will know how to strip its military casing and adapt it to the arts of peace. The United States knows that if the fearful trend of atomic military buildup can be reversed, this greatest of destructive forces can be developed into a great boon, for the benefit of all mankind.

ABILENE - President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the International Atomic Energy Agency will be the focus of the October Lunch & Learn program from the Eisnehower Presidenial Library.

The virtual program is scheduled for noon Thursday.

Eisenhower’s 1953 “Atoms for Peace” address to the General Assembly of the United Nations was the genesis of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This talk will give an overview of the IAEA’s history, highlight connections with Eisenhower and showcase treasures from the IAEA’s Archives.

Richard Lehane is the unit head, archives unit, at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna (Austria). He was previously manager of the Digital Archives team at State Archives NSW (Australia). After completing a Ph.D. in history, Lehane obtained his archival qualifications at the University of Liverpool before embarking on a career in the archives.
