Another trailer has been stolen from a Salina business.

Salina Police Lieutenant James Feldman said this morning that sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. Monday, someone stole a 2002 Eagle utility trailer from Pools Plus, 2501 Market Place.

The trailer was rated for 12,000 pounds and was valued at $8,000. 

Police are looking for surveillance video from the area, Feldman said.

Two staff members at&nbsp;Kansas State University Salina are being promoted as the campus prepares to become a global aerospace leader. With enrollment growing, increased industry demand for training and additional need to support students upskilling their career competencies, a full-time instructional design and faculty support director, Lisa Shappee, and a full-time library director, Katherine Jones, have been appointed. "Both Lisa and Katherine have excelled at providing support to students and faculty and are dedicated to growing the campus," said Alysia Starkey, CEO and dean of K-State Salina. "We are thrilled to have them serve in these full-time positions."

As the new instructional design and faculty support director, Shappee is tasked with focusing on instructional design, faculty support and course quality to ensure all programs provide students the support they need to be successful. This role will support both credit and non-credit programs and courses and support faculty using technology in the college's classrooms such as Canvas, Zoom, Teams Mediasite. Shappee has been a staff member at K-State Salina since 2011. "I enjoy being able to help faculty provide a quality learning experience for students by being a resource for faculty, making their jobs easier and allowing them more time to focus on teaching," Shappee said.

As library director, Jones will capitalize on the work that has already started by supporting students academically both inside and outside of the classroom. The library is part of the K-State Salina Student Success Center and its mission is to provide an inclusive environment that promotes knowledge sharing and comprehensive support to help students develop the skills needed to be successful throughout college and into their careers. Jones also provides support for undergraduate research, develops library policies, is responsible for library operations and maintains online resources for faculty and students. Devin Patrick Hughes credits his father with sparking his love of classical and orchestral music from an early age.

Growing up in Springfield, Ill., Hughes said his father, who died last year at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, traveled to Chicago frequently to “see all the great symphonies.”

“Two of his favorite pieces were Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ and (Bruch’s) ‘Scottish Fantasy,’” Hughes said.

When Hughes, a Colorado-based orchestral and operatic conductor of Irish and Guatemalan descent, was given the opportunity to conduct these two symphonic works for his upcoming music director audition concert for the Salina Symphony, “that sealed the deal for me.”

“It’s a really cool, uplifting program to bring to the community,” he said. "I believe symphonic music has importance in all of our lives, that an orchestra is the heart and soul of a community. I feel that music binds us all together.”

Hughes is the first of five candidates vying for the position of permanent conductor/music director of the Salina Symphony. The first concert in the “Pass the Baton!” music director search season of 2021-2022 begins at 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

“We are so delighted to present our five music director finalists to our patrons and the community this season,” said Adrienne Allen executive director of the Salina Symphony. “Our search begins an exciting new chapter for the symphony.”

Hughes’ program, titled “Musical Landscapes,” is intended to take the audience on a musical journey inspired by American landscapes and cultures, anchored by Dvorak’s challenging “New World Symphony.” The composition is known for having one of the most beautiful melodies in all of classical music, inspired by both Native American music and African American spirituals that Dvorak heard in North America.

“It embodies the idea that the greatest music of society usually comes from its most oppressed people,” Hughes said. “I wanted to celebrate American ingenuity and the ability to triumph against all odds.”

Also on the program are performances of Victor Herbert’s rousing “American Fantasia” and Bruch’s soul-stirring “Scottish Fantasy,” the latter of which features guest violinist Siwoo Kim, who previously performed with the Salina Symphony in 2012 as the grand prize winner of the King Award for Young Artists Competition, sponsored by Salinans Craig and Brenda King.

Prior to each concert this season, all music director candidates will present a pre-concert talk at 3 p.m. in the Watson Room of the Stiefel Theatre. Patrons also can provide their own input on each candidate, Allen said.

“Patrons will be invited to input for the search committee via a survey directly following the concert(s),” she said.

Hughes is highly regarded for his music score interpretations, advocacy for music accessibility, passion for music of all genres and entrepreneurial vigor. He currently serves as music director and conductor of the Boulder Symphony and Arapahoe Philharmonic, both located in the Denver metro area.

Hughes previously held artistic leadership positions with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Youth Association, Denver Young Artists Orchestra and Denver Philharmonic Orchestra. He also was the only American selected with 11 other conductors worldwide to compete in the Toscanini International Conducting Competition.

He has conducted orchestras across North America and Europe, including the Winnipeg Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Des Moines Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Green Bay Symphony and Orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera.

Equally active in choral and operatic repertoire, Hughes has combined local orchestras, businesses and nonprofits to begin a community-based opera program featuring seasoned opera professionals with aspiring artists and community members to create unique opera and operetta experiences.

Hughes also has partnered with various organizations to make music more accessible, including the “Glow Project,” which are sensory-friendly performances geared those with autism and dementia.

Hughes said he was impressed by the Salina Symphony’s emphasis on both performance and education, especially through its Youth Symphony.

“I love when youth is a part of the orchestra and experiencing these great composers,” he said. “I also love the incredible programming the orchestra has done. The musicians love what they do so much and want to create something they’re all proud of.”

Hughes said his main goal as a conductor and music director is to bring out the best in everyone he works with.

“I lend inspiration where it’s needed,” he said. “I think I’m the most successful when orchestra members can bring their entire selves to the performance. One of the jobs of the conductor is to be a light in the middle of darkness, corralling the ensemble together, bringing the music to life and then transferring that to the audience.”

Kim, a New York City-based musician, was born in South Korea to parents who ran a music school and began playing the violin at age two-and-a-half. He received a graduate degree from the famed Juilliard School in New York City. He performs solo and chamber music throughout the world and is co-founding artistic director of the VIVO Music Festival in his adopted hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

“We are really looking forward to having Siwoo back,” Allen said. “He is an incredibly talented musician, and we’re honored that we get to be the first orchestra he plays Bruch’s ‘Scottish Fantasy’ with.”

Other concerts in the “Pass the Baton!” series will include “Give Birth to the Dream,” featuring Melisse Brunet and guest soprano Janie Brokenicky (Nov. 7); “Take Flight,” featuring Yaniv Segal and cellist Hannah Collins (Jan. 30); “Melodic Journey,” featuring Yaniv Attar with guest guitarist Daniel Bolshoy (March 27); and “Symphonic Dances,” featuring Vlad Vizireanu and guest pianist Lorraine Min (May 1).

CONCORDIA - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected Cloud County Community College's sUAS drone program for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems-Collegiate Training Initiative program or the UAS-CTI.

“Being chosen to be a member of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems’ Collegiate Training Initiative demonstrates Cloud County Community College’s collaborative efforts with the Federal Aviation Administration to deliver up-to-date, quality UAS (drones) educational training that ensures our graduates have the needed skill set to be successful in careers involving drones,” said Kimberly Zant, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The FAA’s UAS-CTI program recognizes institutions that prepare students for careers in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. In order to qualify for the initiative, schools must offer a bachelor’s or associates degree in UAS or a degree with a minor, concentration, or certificate in UAS. Schools must provide curriculum covering various aspects of UAS training, including hands-on flight practice, maintenance, uses, applications, privacy concerns, safety, and federal policies concerning UAS.

“The recognition by the FAA of our UAS program is a very important step in our continual development of programs of excellence at Cloud County,” said Monte Poersch, instructor in Renewable Energy. “This initiative will give us an opportunity to work with other community colleges across the nation to move the UAS drone industry forward into a safe integration of our National Air Space.&nbsp;We have already seen benefits as far as paths to direct us towards not only curriculum development but also grant opportunities for the UAS program.”

Cloud County has one of the most comprehensive Small Unmanned Aerial Systems programs in the state.&nbsp;Cloud offers an associate of applied science degree, a 30-hour certificate, and is now offering an abbreviated 18-hour certificate that can be completed completely online.

The 18-hour certificate will prepare students to take the Part 107 license test, as well as qualify them for the Unmanned Safety Institutes (USI) industry Safety Certification Level 1 test. Drone flights as part of this certificate are completed via a simulator, which allows students to become familiar with how to control a drone before flying a real one.

The 30 hour and AAS degree paths provide students the opportunity to fly drones, and learn mapping skills and thermal imaging skills. Students also build drones, which helps them understand the hardware and software required to create an operational unmanned vehicle.

CCCC selected for FAA training program

Every so often I have the opportunity to visit a classroom full of elementary students and read a book to them. More often than not, I’ve accomplished my guest reading visits using virtual platforms that so many are now accustomed to using. Thanks to technology, and a decent internet connection, I’ve been able to read to classrooms hours away from our farm.&nbsp; &nbsp; While the books I read vary depending on the grade level of students, the subject matter and the conversations we have following ultimately always focus on agriculture. &nbsp; It’s a time I truly look forward to as it allows this former teacher to briefly get back into a classroom and get kids excited about reading while also sharing our farm with them. &nbsp; After reading, the students and I spend time talking about the story and they can ask me questions about my farm. While I never really know the direction the students’ questions may go, I do know a lot of elementary-aged children are very curious about how many dogs and cows I have on my farm. I also know that during every single one of my visits, without fail, I will have a child inquire about my favorite crop. &nbsp; While I generally answer that question diplomatically — just as a parent would if asked who their favorite child is — the reality is that while I value and appreciate all of the plants we grow on our farm, I do give one of our crops a bit more attention than the others. &nbsp; Our popcorn crop receives a lot of my time and focus throughout the year. It’s the smallest crop we grow based on the total number of acres, but it’s definitely the one I spend a lot of my thoughts on. &nbsp; Maybe it’s because we’ve only grown popcorn for a handful of years, making it the “baby” of the farm. Maybe it’s because it requires a bit more attention and TLC compared to the other crops. Maybe it’s the fact that we market it directly to consumers, which is different compared to our other commodities.&nbsp; &nbsp; Like a doting parent, the popcorn is also the most photographed on our farm — second only to my own two children. My cellphone is full of images I’ve captured of this crop’s milestones throughout the growing season. From observing the small seeds getting planted into the soil, celebrating when tiny plants emerge from the earth, and cheering them on as they develop and grow larger and larger by the day. It’s all documented. &nbsp; Whether it’s the threat of weather in our area, making sure the plants are getting plenty of water during the hot days of summer, or obsessing over the moisture content of the kernels leading up to harvest, I definitely fret over the popcorn a bit more as well.&nbsp; &nbsp; I always experience a sense of relief when we get the combine into the field and finally begin picking the corn. I’m calmed once we safely tuck the grain away into its bin for storage until it’s time to send it off to be cleaned, sorted and bagged. And I can also breathe easier knowing when the grain has safely arrived at its destinations. &nbsp; So, while I can honestly say that I appreciate all of the plants that we grow on our farm equally as they provide my family with the life we have, I find myself quite fond our little popcorn crop. It might be the smallest, but it definitely receives the mightiest amount of my attention annually.

Thanks to technology, and a decent internet connection, I’ve been able to read to classrooms hours away from our farm.&nbsp; &nbsp; While the books I read vary depending on the grade level of students, the subject matter and the conversations we have following ultimately always focus on agriculture. &nbsp; It’s a time I truly look forward to as it allows this former teacher to briefly get back into a classroom and get kids excited about reading while also sharing our farm with them. &nbsp; After reading, the students and I spend time talking about the story and they can ask me questions about my farm. While I never really know the direction the students’ questions may go, I do know a lot of elementary-aged children are very curious about how many dogs and cows I have on my farm. I also know that during every single one of my visits, without fail, I will have a child inquire about my favorite crop. &nbsp; While I generally answer that question diplomatically — just as a parent would if asked who their favorite child is — the reality is that while I value and appreciate all of the plants we grow on our farm, I do give one of our crops a bit more attention than the others. &nbsp; Our popcorn crop receives a lot of my time and focus throughout the year. It’s the smallest crop we grow based on the total number of acres, but it’s definitely the one I spend a lot of my thoughts on. &nbsp; Maybe it’s because we’ve only grown popcorn for a handful of years, making it the “baby” of the farm. Maybe it’s because it requires a bit more attention and TLC compared to the other crops. Maybe it’s the fact that we market it directly to consumers, which is different compared to our other commodities.&nbsp; &nbsp; Like a doting parent, the popcorn is also the most photographed on our farm — second only to my own two children. My cellphone is full of images I’ve captured of this crop’s milestones throughout the growing season. From observing the small seeds getting planted into the soil, celebrating when tiny plants emerge from the earth, and cheering them on as they develop and grow larger and larger by the day. It’s all documented. &nbsp; Whether it’s the threat of weather in our area, making sure the plants are getting plenty of water during the hot days of summer, or obsessing over the moisture content of the kernels leading up to harvest, I definitely fret over the popcorn a bit more as well.&nbsp; &nbsp; I always experience a sense of relief when we get the combine into the field and finally begin picking the corn. I’m calmed once we safely tuck the grain away into its bin for storage until it’s time to send it off to be cleaned, sorted and bagged. And I can also breathe easier knowing when the grain has safely arrived at its destinations. &nbsp; So, while I can honestly say that I appreciate all of the plants that we grow on our farm equally as they provide my family with the life we have, I find myself quite fond our little popcorn crop. (Betty Shelby was acquitted in May 2017 of manslaughter in the death of Terence Crutcher.) It was disclosed that computer hackers had swiped personal information from at least 500 million Yahoo accounts in what was believed to have been the biggest digital break-in at an email provider.

One year ago: U.S. deaths from the coronavirus topped 200,000, by far the highest confirmed death toll from the virus in the world at that point, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University. The U.N. General Assembly convened for its first-ever virtual meeting, as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged nations to tackle the coronavirus and the "economic calamity" it had unleashed, as well as the risk of a new Cold War between the United States and China. A Louisiana state trooper, Chris Hollingsworth, died after a single-vehicle crash that took place hours after he learned he would be fired for his role in the 2019 in-custody death of a Black man, Ronald Greene, following a high-speed chase. Overriding the mayor's veto, Seattle's City Council voted to reduce the police budget and reallocate some money to community programs. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was released from a Berlin hospital after more than a month's treatment for poisoning. (Navalny would be arrested and jailed upon his return to Russia.)

Today in History - Sept. 22

Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers were in Salina today to raise awareness among drivers of the need to caution near railroad tracks and trains.

The effort was part of Operation Clear Track, which took place today throughout the country as a part of Rail Safety Week.

The goal of Rail Safety Week’s “Operation Clear Track” was to reduce pedestrian and driver injuries and fatalities around railroad tracks. Law enforcement were stationed at targeted railroad grade crossings, handing out railroad safety cards to motorists and pedestrians and issuing warnings and citations to violators.

Federal statistics show that every three hours in the United States, a person or vehicle is hit by a train, according to a news release from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Strecker among governor's latest appointments

The Fly Kansas Air Tour takes to the skies later this week and will have several area stops, including the Salina Regional Airport.

According to information from the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education (KCAE), the 2021 tour is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday. The tour will begin at the Wellington Municipal Airport from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday. Other stops include the following.

11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m., Fort Scott Municipal Airport

5:15-8 p.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport (dinner for registrants only)

9:45-11:45 a.m., Clay Center Municipal Airport

1:30-3 p.m., Phillipsburg Municipal Airport

Following is a history of the Fly Kansas Air Tour from the KCAE <a href="https://flykansas.org/fly-kansas-air-tour">website</a>.

The Fly Kansas Air tour originally began in 1928 to demonstrate the fledgling aviation industry across the state. The tour was restarted by KCAE in 2008 as a commemorative event to pay homage to the "Air Capital of the World" and aviation clusters around the state of Kansas. Today, the event reaches local communities across the state to promote interest in aviation with a focus on aviation education, pilot camaraderie, and industry development.

The success of the commemorative event in 2008 led to the creation of an inaugural event in partnership with the Kansas Department of Transportation, Division of Aviation in 2014 that is now in its fifth and largest year yet.

The tour has expanded from a handful of pilots, to over 50 individual airplanes visiting local airports across the state. The tour typically visits at least 10 airports across western, central, and eastern Kansas, with events or local community involvement planned at each.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that his office is investigating the case of the body found southwest of Salina as a homicide. At approximately 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, the body of a male in his early 40s was found&nbsp;near the intersection of S. Halstead Road and W. McReynolds Road.

Soldan said this morning he anticipated that his office would release the name of the deceased later today after notification of next of kin.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a man in his early 40s after a body was found southwest of Salina this morning.

According to information from Sheriff Roger Soldan, a body was located near the intersection of S. Halstead Road and W. McReynolds Road at approximately 10:50 a.m. Tuesday. The body was that of a man in his early 40s. No other identifying information has been released.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Scene Response Team has been called in to assist with this investigation, Soldan noted in a news release.

Persons who witnessed any suspicious activity in this area or think they may have information in reference to this incident are asked to contact the Saline County Sheriff’s Office (785) 826-6500 or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-KSCRIME.

This investigation is in progress and information will be released as it becomes available, according to Soldan.

UPDATE: Sheriff's office conducting murder investigation

The Royal Navy flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) is currently deployed in the Pacific as part of the United Kingdom’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG). Sailing with the ship is U.S. Navy Commander Andrew Plumer, a native of Salina.

Plumer is an intelligence officer who was selected by the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence to join the British Carrier and the Strike Group who are currently at sea in the Pacific Ocean. He joined the Navy after graduating from college, having grown up in Kansas attending Salina Central High School, Kansas Wesleyan University, and Kansas State University. He currently lives in Honolulu, Hawaii, stationed at the U.S. Pacific Fleet Headquarters in Pearl Harbor.

Serving in the U.S. Navy has taken Plumer around the world with his work. After Sept. 11, he got into Naval Intelligence which was then expanding deeply into Special Operations, and Plumer took active tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Headquarters of U.S. 5th Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. He also served in the USS Iwo Jima and on command establishments in Florida, Washington D.C. and Honolulu, and Japan.

Even so, Plumer has always maintained a connection with his hometown, and his close family still live there. 

When remembering his home, he said, “You miss down to earth people. I’ve lived in multiple cities, from one corner of the Earth to the other… and visited many more in both combat and non-combat roles. I will likely continue to do so as long as the Navy sends you wherever they need you. You also come to miss the small things, like Cozy Inn Burgers. I’ve had them since I was a kid, and there is truly nothing like them anywhere else in the world.”

Joining the UK CSG as an intelligence analyst and as the liaison for the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet and Office of Naval Intelligence has been a rich experience for Plumer. 

Describing the journey, he said, “I flew to London and got some briefings, meeting senior leaders in the Royal Navy before travelling to Portsmouth and joining the HMS Queen Elizabeth, a brand new aircraft carrier designed to carry the new F-35B strike aircraft. It was remarkable to see the historic port of Portsmouth, and see the locations and sights that you only read about in a Patrick O’Brien novel, such as HMS Victory, Spithead, and the Minches (around Scotland). I’ve also learned Royal Navy lingo (called ‘Jack Speak’), terms like "goffa," "gen," "scran"; we don’t use these terms in the U.S. so this has been quite a learning experience!”

Before departing Portsmouth to begin the deployment, there was a very special visit to the flagship. 

Plumer said, “Her Majesty the Queen came to meet the officers and crew whilst in Portsmouth and I was one of those introduced. This has really been a remarkable experience, and I think I am one of the few people in the U.S. Navy, including very senior U.S. Admirals, who have had an opportunity like this”

Plumer’s previous experience working in the Pacific region with US CSG 5 and embarked in the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) has meant he has lots of advice to shape daily operations and he provides an important link to the other US forces working closely with the UK.

Working with the Royal Navy, he joins many other Americans living on board the carrier. The US Marine Corps have a detachment on board from VMFA-211 Squadron as well as a group from US Navy Ordinance. HMS Queen Elizabeth together with the US Marine Corps, are at the forefront of developing the F-35B strike fighter jet, and much of the deployment has focused on launching these brand new jets from US and UK squadrons.

Plumer was also filmed in his role as a Pacific expert in the BBC sponsored documentary currently in production by Chris Terrill about the HMS Queen Elizabeth’s voyage. The documentary is due out in the fall of 2022.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department plans to close&nbsp; part of Smolan Road for culvert work.

Smolan Road between S. Fairchilds Road and S. Centennial Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Wednesday for replacement of cross-road drainage culverts. Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by Oct. 22, the department noted.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

A Glock was stolen from a north Salina residence on Monday.

Tiera Steen, 23, of Salina, told police that she was in the process of moving into a house in the 800 block of W. Elm Street, and was away from the residence between 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday.

9/11 commemorative Glock stolen from north Salina house

Police are investigating the theft of a pickup and trailer from a Salina construction company over the weekend.

Sometime between 5 p.m. Friday and 6:30 a.m. Monday, someone entered a fenced-in area and stole the following from Smoky Hill Construction, 1615 W. Magnolia Road, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

●A 2001 Dodge Ram pickup with a Kansas license plate of 620980

●A black dual-axle trailer with Kansas license plate of 567065

Both the pickup and the trailer had company decals on them.

It is believed that the thief attempted to steal a Ford F150 belonging to the company, however the pickup was found stuck in the mud behind the business, Forrester said. 

Additionally, an employee-owned pickup that was parked at the business had both the headlights and taillights removed and a window broken, Forrester said.

Total loss was estimated at just under $11,000, he said.

Pickup, trailer stolen from Salina construction company

CLAY CENTER - Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) has been awarded a $198,116 grant through the Health Resources &amp; Services Administration as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. 

The grant is part of the Rural Health Clinic Vaccine Confidence (RHCVC) program, which provides up to $49,529 per rural health clinic location. CCMC will receive funds in support of vaccine administration at Clay Center Family Physicians, Clyde Family Physicians, Linn Family Physicians, and Riley Family Physicians.

“The additional funding will provide opportunities to reinforce vaccine information, education, and resources throughout our rural health clinics and surrounding areas. This initiative covers a broad range of efforts; including improving health care in rural areas by reinforcing basic messaging about prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases,”&nbsp;Austin M. Gillard, CEO of CCMC, said.

The RHCVC Program is an initiative to improve vaccine confidence and counter vaccine hesitancy in rural communities where COVID-19 vaccine uptake lags in comparison to more populated areas. CCMC is well positioned to disseminate information about how and where to get vaccinated at the local level, and to coordinate with existing vaccination sites to identify strategies to increase vaccine confidence.

Clay County Medical Center receives COVID-19 vaccine grant

The Saline County Sheriff's Office has announced the results of its recent You Drink. You Drive. You Lose. campaign.

During the campaign Aug. 20 to Sept. 6, the sheriff's office conducted overtime saturation patrols to aggressively enforce Kansas impaired driving laws.

Deputies made 118 vehicle stops which resulted in the following, according to information from the sheriff's office.

"If you were stopped you hopefully learned from your experience," said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan. "You can count on this department to vigorously enforce impaired driving and other traffic laws all through the year. We will continue to do so because, while the You Drink. You Drive. You Lose. campaign may be over, we are always committed to enforcing impaired driving and other traffic laws."

The You Drink. You Drive. You Lose. campaign was supported by a federal grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation.
