McPherson County continues to experience extremely high infection rates. McPherson County Health Department (MCHD) strongly urges all county residents 2 years of age and above to mask up. We also strongly urge all county residents 5 years of age and above to get vaccinated. If you completed a COVID-19 vaccine series prior to July 2021, you are likely due for a booster dose. Vaccination remains to be our best tool to prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death. Our local hospitals, and surrounding hospitals we may normally transfer patients to, are at maximum capacity and response. Please help our healthcare workers and our community by masking up, getting vaccinated and staying home if you’re ill.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have changed the isolation and quarantine guidelines, which may be referred to as “the 5/5 rule.” People who test positive continue to have a 10 day isolation period, however, if the case is 24 hours fever free without fever-reducing medication and feels significantly better on day 5, they may leave home isolation on day 6 but only if they mask when around others through their 10 day period. If they cannot mask, they cannot leave home isolation. People who are named a close contact will continue to have a 10 day quarantine period, however, if the close contact is asymptomatic and/or tests negative on day 5, they may leave home quarantine on day 6 but only if they mask when around&nbsp; others through their 10 day period. If they cannot mask, they cannot leave home quarantine. Positive cases will be instructed to contact their close contacts to notify them of the exposure.

The KDHE has also adopted a temporary 30 day suspension of K-12 school contact tracing, effective January 18, 2022, in response to the current surge of cases and pressure that is being placed on the school system. MCHD staff has met with county public schools to discuss the impact of this decision. MCHD has encouraged McPherson County schools to continue to notify families of school-related exposures and implement mask policies. MCHD encourages families that have students in school to regularly monitor your children for symptoms of illness, keep them home if ill and seek medical care and testing. Please continue to notify your children’s school if your child is ill. Two school districts in McPherson County participate in the KDHE Test-to-Stay program and MCHD encourages those programs to continue to function as they have been.

McPherson Co. Health Dept. begs residents to take COVID precautions

Following is the Saline County Health Department COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

Since our last update on Friday, a staggering 734 people have had COVID-19 positive test results reported to the Saline County Health Department. Over 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Saline County, just 19 days in 2022. This is the highest number of new cases to hit our county since we began keeping records.

The Salina Regional Health Center reports that 28 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

There are a recorded 2,448 active cases of COVID-19. Due to this overwhelmingly high number of cases, the Saline County Health Department will only be contacting those under 18 years old or who have requested an isolation letter for their employers.

A local man turned himself in after he shattered the front glass door at the Salina Police Department Tuesday night.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Craig Gilbert, 53, of Salina, walked into the Salina Police Department lobby and used the phone to call the dispatch center and report that he had just shattered the front door of the police department, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Officers located a rock in the foyer area and found that the glass door was, indeed, shattered. Damage was estimated at $800.

Gilbert was arrested on the requested charge of damage to property, Forrester reported.

LOST SPRINGS - A small earthquake rattled part of northeastern Marion County early this morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.0 magnitude quake struck at 3:44 a.m. Wednesday. It was centered just south of 320th Street between Remington Road and Quail Creek Road.

Minor earthquake rattles part of Marion County this morning

Grinter served with K-State Salina's enrollment management department since 2015. His tenure began as an admissions representative; he became an admissions operations coordinator in June 2016; served as interim executive director from December 2016 -September 2017; and was promoted to assistant director of admissions in October 2018. Grinter helped develop and lead K-State Salina's recruitment strategy in partnership with Executive Director Christopher Smith and key stakeholders across campus. This work includes developing, launching and managing the training for new admissions representatives, student ambassadors, graduation and internal and external events. "I am excited to continue being a part of a team that has such enthusiasm toward growth and engagement with students," Grinter said. "Training and leading this team continues to provide students with a unique experience they cannot find elsewhere, and I am proud of the things our admissions team have done and will do." Grinter's promotion comes when K-State Salina has seen tremendous growth in new students for the fourth year in a row. As director of admissions, Grinter will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the admissions office. He will develop, direct, and coordinate student enrollment activities. The director of admissions will work with departmental leaders throughout campus to align our unique consultative approach. "I continue to be impressed by Kris' dedication to the campus, admissions team, and ensuring students are at the center of every decision he makes," Smith said. The Kansas Geological Survey reported that a 2.5 magnitude earthquake struck southwest of Gypsum at 1:28 p.m. Tuesday. It was centered just south of E. Hedberg Road between S. Kipp Road and S. Whitmore Road.

Museum now taking reservations for Kansas Day celebration

Kansas Wesleyan University announced today that its spring semester full-time undergraduate enrollment is the largest spring enrollment in university history.

That enrollment figure is 652, according to information from the university.

“This news emphasizes our upward momentum,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement and university operations. “During the past two years, we’ve not only seen some of the highest enrollment figures in school history, but we’ve seen people support KWU like never before. Our fundraising is at an all-time high, our enrollment is outstanding and our marketing efforts are spreading the message of the Power of AND. It’s a great time to be a Coyote, and there’s more to come!”

The total undergraduate enrollment, which includes part-time students, is 701, the largest figure in 10 years, the university noted in a news release. Kansas Wesleyan's total enrollment, which includes graduate students, is 760.

Additionally, the number of students living in on-campus housing - 429 - is the second-highest spring figure in university history, the university reported. The record was 440 in 2010.

MANHATTAN – Rural&nbsp;grocery&nbsp;stores – and the communities they serve – face many challenges, including maintaining access to healthy food when the business changes ownership.&nbsp;

Erica Blair, a program manager for K-State Research and Extension’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ruralgrocery.org/" target="_blank">Rural&nbsp;Grocery&nbsp;Initiative</a>, said the list of questions include:&nbsp;

●Who will take over the store once the store’s owner moves on?

●What steps should be taken before exiting? And, when?

●How can grocers maximize business value?

Blair said the Rural&nbsp;Grocery&nbsp;Initiative will kick off a free webinar series, titled&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ruralgrocery.org/events/Rural-Grocery-Succession-Planning.html" target="_blank">Rural&nbsp;Grocery&nbsp;Succession Planning</a>, on Thursday and continuing the third Thursday of each month in 2022.&nbsp;

The monthly webinars are free and open to the public, but&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ruralgrocery.org/events/Rural-Grocery-Succession-Planning.html" target="_blank">registration is required</a>. Grocers, prospective business owners, resource providers, economic developers, city leaders and community stakeholders are encouraged to attend.&nbsp;

According to a recent survey conducted by K-State’s Rural Grocery&nbsp; Initiative,&nbsp;about 40% of rural grocers in Kansas expect to transition away from their business in the next 5-10 years. Blair said the findings also indicate 81% have no plan for future ownership.&nbsp;

“These findings demonstrate a tremendous need for greater technical assistance on this issue,” she said. “Business transitions are inevitable, and planning ahead puts grocers in a stronger position. It also gives community members greater assurance that they’ll continue having access to healthy, affordable food.”&nbsp;

Last spring, the Rural&nbsp;Grocery&nbsp;Initiative hosted a related series called&nbsp;Keeping Groceries Alive: Successful Ownership Transitions for Rural&nbsp;Grocery&nbsp;Stores.&nbsp;As an extension of their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kauffman.org/our-grants/heartland-challenge-rfp/" target="_blank">Heartland Challenge</a>&nbsp;grant, which is funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the Rural&nbsp;Grocery&nbsp;Initiative will dive even deeper into succession planning topics throughout 2022, according to program leader Rial Carver.&nbsp;

“A lot is involved in a business transition. Now that we’ve laid the foundation, it’s time to dig into the more technical details of this process,” Carver said. “This includes the nuts and bolts of various community-supported ownership models that have emerged across rural Kansas, like cooperatives, municipally-owned stores, nonprofits and more.”&nbsp;

K-State: Monthly webinars on rural grocery succession planning

Whether singing soft drink jingles as a boy soprano, learning the violin at a young age or composing and conducting major orchestral pieces as an adult, Yaniv Segal has had an unconventional music career.

The son of a Polish violinist and Israeli violin maker, the New York City native was introduced to the violin as a small boy while also working as a child actor and singer. He sang in the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus and toured the U.S. and Japan in the first national tour of the musical “The Secret Garden.”

As a boy soprano, he sang on TV commercials for Pepsi, as well as on numerous CDs ranging from classical opera to rock and folk music.

Segal’s stage acting career culminated in a production of Tom Stoppard’s play “Hapgood” at Lincoln Center in New York City, where he played the adolescent son of the title character to great acclaim.

At that point, he decided to focus exclusively on music as a career, as a violinist, composer and ultimately, an orchestral conductor. Segal said conducting, like acting, is another form of communication from the artist to the audience.

“It’s figuring out your intention and then getting that out to the audience,” he said. “There was a point in my life where I couldn’t say what I wanted to say with words, so that’s why I went into music.”

Segal is the third of five finalists vying for the position of conductor and music director of the Salina Symphony. His concert, “Take Flight,” will be at 4 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

The program begins with a performance of Antonin Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance No 8,” followed by an original “symphonic poem” by young contemporary composer Polina Nazaykinskaya entitled “Fenix.”

Nazaykinskaya plans to attend the concert and participate in a pre-concert talk with Segal and guest cellist Hannah Collins at 3 p.m. in the Stiefel Theatre Watson Room. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m.

Collins, an acclaimed musician who teaches at the University of Kansas, will perform Joseph Haydn’s “Cello Concerto No. 1” with the Salina Symphony. Segal, who has known Collins for many years, said the audience will be “blown away” by her playing.

“It’s nice to work with a friend, but it’s nicer to know the artist who’s coming is world class,” he said.

Segal also will conduct the Symphony in a performance of “Symphony No. 5” by Jean Sibelius, who he said is one of his favorite composers.

“He’s a composer who has his own language,” Segal said. “The music grows and grows until you are overwhelmed by this amazing orchestral palate. It’s a magical piece that feels right for this time, when we’re beginning to awaken out of a pandemic.”

Segal grew up in New York speaking three languages in a multi-cultural household.

“I grew up in an orchestral tradition,” he said. “My mom was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic, so I had an understanding of the inside of an orchestra, how to work with people to get them on board to produce something greater than their parts.”

Currently living in Ann Arbor, Mich., Segal completed graduate studies at the University of Michigan in 2013 with renowned conducting pedagogue Kenneth Kiesler and McArthur Award-winning composer Bright Sheng.

As a conductor and composer, Segal has worked with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic, Ann Arbor Symphony, Cleveland Opera and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra.

While assistant conductor of the Naples Philharmonic from 2014 to 2017, Segal conducted nearly 20 different programs each year, including a concert with legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman.

The Chelsea Symphony premiered Segal’s Cello Concerto in 2015 and “Rite of Spring (Redux)” in 2013, which was a reworking of Stravinsky’s seminal work that included electric guitar, bass and saxophone.

Deeply committed to the next generation of musicians and music lovers, Segal also has written a concert-length work for chamber orchestra and narrator entitled “The Harmony Games” that introduces listeners, especially young listeners, to the instruments of the orchestra while demonstrating connections between music and math.

“They hopefully come away saying music is awesome, I want more,” Segal said. “It’s so important for the symphony orchestra to develop new audiences, future musicians, listeners and audiences.”

Segal said that when he researched the Salina Symphony, he was impressed by the “high level of performance” of the community musicians and the organization’s continuing dedication to bringing cultural life to their community.

“My job would be to raise the bar, the ceiling, every time they play, and I’m confident I can do that,” he said. “It’s about figuring out what the orchestra needs and what the audience needs, and then putting it all together.”

Like Segal, Collins grew up in a musical family. Her mother played piano and her sister the violin, so Collins picked up the cello so the family could perform together as a trio.

“That happens in a lot of musical families," she said.

In addition to earning graduate degrees in cello performance from the Yale School of Music, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, Collins has a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering from Yale.

“When I was 18, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” she said. “I wasn’t ready to decide yet. I still feel that way. I would stay in school forever if I could, but eventually I focused on music.”

Solo and chamber music performances have taken Collins to festivals such as Orford Centre d’arts, Kneisel Hall, the Aldeburgh Festival and Musique de Chambre a Giverny. She is a member of the Bach

Aria Soloists, Cantata Profana and the Grossman Ensemble and has performed with The Knights, Decoda, Talea Ensemble, A Far Cry and NOVUS NY.

She also appears regularly as a Baroque cellist with the Sebastians, New York Baroque Incorporated, Quodlibet Ensemble and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra.

Collins currently is assistant professor of cello at the University of Kansas School of Music.

For the Salina Symphony performance, Collins will perform the Haydn’s First Cello Concerto and premiere two brand new cadenzas by the Spanish cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios written especially for this concert.

“I’m extremely excited to work with the Salina Symphony and with Yaniv,” she said. “The past couple of years have been difficult for performing musicians. It’s caused some amazing innovations to happen, but it doesn’t replace being in the same room experiencing things with someone next to you.”

It’s a magical piece that feels right for this time, when we’re beginning to awaken out of a pandemic.”An orchestra traditionSegal grew up in New York speaking three languages in a multi-cultural household.“I grew up in an orchestral tradition,” he said. “My mom was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic, so I had an understanding of the inside of an orchestra, how to work with people to get them on board to produce something greater than their parts.”Currently living in Ann Arbor, Mich., Segal completed graduate studies at the University of Michigan in 2013 with renowned conducting pedagogue Kenneth Kiesler and McArthur Award-winning composer Bright Sheng.As a conductor and composer, Segal has worked with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic, Ann Arbor Symphony, Cleveland Opera and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra.While assistant conductor of the Naples Philharmonic from 2014 to 2017, Segal conducted nearly 20 different programs each year, including a concert with legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman.The Chelsea Symphony premiered Segal’s Cello Concerto in 2015 and “Rite of Spring (Redux)” in 2013, which was a reworking of Stravinsky’s seminal work that included electric guitar, bass and saxophone.Deeply committed to the next generation of musicians and music lovers, Segal also has written a concert-length work for chamber orchestra and narrator entitled “The Harmony Games” that introduces listeners, especially young listeners, to the instruments of the orchestra while demonstrating connections between music and math.“They hopefully come away saying music is awesome, I want more,” Segal said. “It’s so important for the symphony orchestra to develop new audiences, future musicians, listeners and audiences.”Segal said that when he researched the Salina Symphony, he was impressed by the “high level of performance” of the community musicians and the organization’s continuing dedication to bringing cultural life to their community.“My job would be to raise the bar, the ceiling, every time they play, and I’m confident I can do that,” he said. “It’s about figuring out what the orchestra needs and what the audience needs, and then putting it all together.”Picking up the celloLike Segal, Collins grew up in a musical family. Her mother played piano and her sister the violin, so Collins picked up the cello so the family could perform together as a trio.“That happens in a lot of musical families," she said.In addition to earning graduate degrees in cello performance from the Yale School of Music, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, Collins has a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering from Yale.“When I was 18, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” she said. “I wasn’t ready to decide yet. I still feel that way. I would stay in school forever if I could, but eventually I focused on music.”Solo and chamber music performances have taken Collins to festivals such as Orford Centre d’arts, Kneisel Hall, the Aldeburgh Festival and Musique de Chambre a Giverny. She is a member of the BachAria Soloists, Cantata Profana and the Grossman Ensemble and has performed with The Knights, Decoda, Talea Ensemble, A Far Cry and NOVUS NY.She also appears regularly as a Baroque cellist with the Sebastians, New York Baroque Incorporated, Quodlibet Ensemble and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra.Collins currently is assistant professor of cello at the University of Kansas School of Music.For the Salina Symphony performance, Collins will perform the Haydn’s First Cello Concerto and premiere two brand new cadenzas by the Spanish cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios written especially for this concert.“I’m extremely excited to work with the Salina Symphony and with Yaniv,” she said. “The past couple of years have been difficult for performing musicians. TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Lorraine public water supply system. 

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure&nbsp;in the distribution system due to a waterline break.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Lorraine indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

The distribution is scheduled to take place from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park.

Participants must bring a photo ID, proof of a Saline County address, and proof of income. If you are picking up commodities for someone else, you will need a photo ID and written authorization from that person.

Items to be distributed include green beans, grape juice, pistachios, dried eggs, mac and cheese, peanut butter, frozen ground beef, frozen tortillas, dried cranberries, and canned peas.
