A robing ceremony for Dickinson County District Magistrate Judge Neal Gugler has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 15 in Courtroom 1 of the Dickinson County Courthouse, 109 E. First Street.

Also, the Dickinson County District Court Clerk’s office will be closed from 1 to 3:30 p.m. April 15 so court staff may attend the ceremony.

Courtroom 1 is located on the second floor of the courthouse. Social distancing rules will be observed.

Gugler was appointed magistrate judge of the 8th Judicial District on March 3 by the judicial district’s nominating commission, following public interviews.

Robing ceremony planned in Abilene for new magistrate judge

A Salina property management firm is out approximately $1,300 after thefts at two of its apartment complexes.

An employee of Jensen Properties LLC told police that on March 14 he noticed that some of the coin collection units on the washers and dryers in the facility at 415 E. Republic Avenue, had no quarters in them, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. When the employee returned to check the units on Monday, quarters were missing once again.

Additionally, quarters were missing from the coin collection units in the laundry room in the company's facility at 651 Upper Mill Heights Drive, Forrester said.

It appeared that whoever stole the quarters had somehow unlocked the units, as they were unlocked when the thefts were discovered, Forrester said.

The total amount of stolen quarters was estimated at $900.

Forrester said that a new water heater that had been delivered to the E. Republic facility and had been sitting in the hallway awaiting installation also was stolen. The water heater was valued at $400.

A rain and snow mix will be likely late this evening and overnight. 

Snow accumulations are expected to remain light and restricted to central Kansas for the most part where up to a half inch is possible on grassy or elevated surfaces.

In response to changes in the aerospace and technology industries, K-State Salina added two new academic degrees and — with the philanthropic support of donors — 17 aircraft to its fleet in the past year. The new residence hall is another substantial strategic development on campus and enhances the accessibility for prospective students who require housing. "This new residence hall is another step forward in establishing our campus as a global aerospace leader," said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean. "Studies show students earn better grades and are more likely to finish their degrees when living on campus. This ideal space allows our students to build their network, further their goals and find support that is important to them. When students are empowered by a positive community, they become leaders of tomorrow." Starkey, the dean's advisory council, alumni and representatives from KSU Foundation and Hutton Corporation gathered March 25 to break ground on the $9.1 million project. "K-State Salina's commitment to the community and its enrollment growth is realized by the construction of this new residence hall," said Tim Rogers, executive director of the Salina Airport Authority. "This not only helps students but reduces the housing pressure in Salina and benefits the Kansas economy from increased enrollment. Saline County has closed part of a road in far southern Saline County for drainage work.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department announced today that S. Kipp Road between Coronado Heights Road and Rose Hill Road was closed to traffic today for the replacement of a drainage structure. Weather permitting the roadway should be opened by Friday.

Drivers are asked to find alternate routes around the project area.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times, but only from the side upon which the property lies, the department noted.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities is presenting a community mural visioning workshop, in preparation for a mural being created for the new stage, located at the corner of N. Santa Fe Avenue and Ash Street.

On Friday from 5-6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1-3 p.m., artist Dave Loewenstein will be in Salina to host a visioning workshop to obtain community input to assist with the development of a design for the mural that will be painted on the stage walls in April. His presentation will be held at the Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. Fourth Street.

Before the mural design and painting begins, Loewenstein likes to meet with as many people in the community as possible to inform and shape the design of new public works of art. The community is invited to this free event to see Loewenstein’s presentation and participate in his visioning process.

Loewenstein’s mural, Waiting in the Wings, graced Campbell Plaza from 2010 until recently when it was lost due to water damage discovered behind the wall during renovations.

During the 2010 project, with the assistance of artist Debbie Wagner, Loewenstein did extensive Salina research while creating the design and included lots of visual nods to places and people unique to Salina. Local people posed for the figures and many others who were passing by were invited to pick up a brush and join the fun. Loewenstein will apply a similar unique and creative process for this new stage mural project

Community mural visioning workshop Friday and Saturday

Brodie, a fifth-grade student at Schilling Elementary School, was notified earlier this month that his poem, Numbers, had been selected for inclusion in the upcoming Young American Poetry Digest. The poem is about where and when numbers are seen.

"The selection panel members are educators who select only the best poems submitted, poems that are especially well written for the age level of the student," the notification letter included.

"I was so happy his poem was selected. At the start of our poetry unit, Brodie came to me and asked if he could share a poem he had recently written. I could tell he had worked hard on his poem and had even practiced presenting it so I was proud that all of his hard work had paid off and that he had gotten the recognition he deserved," Brodie's teacher, Nora Rindt, told Salina Post.

Rindt said she had heard about the poetry contest, and when Brodie asked to share his poem, she thought she would give him a chance to share it with a wider audience.

"Not only was this a way for Brodie to take pride in his work, but it also gave him the opportunity to show off his talent. I think it’s important for kids to get recognition for their hard work and talent," Rindt said. "I would just like people to know that Brodie is such a hardworking student. He always wants to do his best and isn’t afraid to put in some extra effort or practice to achieve what he wants. He is truly deserving of this awesome accomplishment."

Brodie's father, Micah, also had praise for Rindt and Schilling Elementary School.

"He has one of the most amazing teachers. She noticed one day he was writing some poetry and asked if he would like to publish a poem someday and he told her yes," Micah Bunce told Salina Post. 

"This is a big thing on two levels," he continued. "One that an educator recognized a student's love for writing and provided an opportunity to try something new, and second his success and joy when he received his letter of acceptance in the mail. Schilling Elementary School continues to be a superior school of caring staff and leadership.

Schilling fifth-grader has poem selected for publication

Salina Regional Health Center is modifying its COVID-19 visitor guidelines due to improving numbers of COVID-19 infection in the community. 

Effective Wednesday, all hospital inpatients and outpatients will be able to have two visitors age 12 and older with them in the facility at the same time. Visitors can alternate in and out of the facility throughout the day.

Visitors must come and go using the hospital’s main entrance between the hours of 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Hospital outpatients had previously been allowed to have only one visitor accompany them for their appointments. All visitors also had previously been required to be age 18 and older.

All Salina SRHC-affiliated clinic patients also will be allowed to have two visitors/assistants accompany them for their appointments.

“We’ve seen continued trends of decreasing COVID-19 activity in recent weeks in both the number of daily positive cases and the number of inpatient admissions at the hospital,” said Bethanie McDowell, infection prevention director at SRHC. “We will continue masking and screening all patients and visitors entering our facilities following state and federal guidelines for health care providers.”

According to the CDC Tracker for COVID-19, Saline County is listed as a “Low” area of transmission for the virus. On Tuesday, Salina Regional Health Center had one inpatient with COVID-19. Throughout the month of March the hospital has had a fluctuating daily census of five or fewer COVID-19 inpatients.

Current visitation guidelines can be found at <a href="http://www.srhc.com">www.srhc.com</a>:

• Inpatient visitors may only enter the hospital Main Entrance between the hours of 5&nbsp;a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

• Inpatients and outpatients are limited to two visitors at the same time. Visitors may alternate in and out of the facility during visiting hours.

• Visitors are not allowed to access the main hospital through the Emergency Department entrance at any time.

• Visitors are welcome to stay as long as they like within routine hospital visiting hours.

• Visitors will be asked to wear a mask throughout the visit including in hallways, public areas and the patient’s room.

An adaptation of a beloved Jane Austen novel will take the stage at Salina South High School's auditorium later this week.

The Salina South Performing Arts Department is scheduled to present Sense and Sensibility at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. 

Tickets will be available in advance by ordering online or can be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to performances. The production is presented in a three-quarter round with the audience seated surrounding the stage with limited seating for each performance. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens/military, and $4 for students. 

Parking is accessible from both E. Magnolia Road and Edward Street. Salina South High School is located at 730 E. Magnolia Road.

The department encourages interested persons to check the website for ticket info and for updates if any dates/times should change.

In addition to a red flag warning, a high wind warning has been issued for some counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a high wind warning in effect from 1-7 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph will develop this afternoon increasing to 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph peaking during the late afternoon hours.

High wind warning issued for Ellsworth, Lincoln counties

A Garden City man was arrested early Tuesday morning in Salina after a search allegedly revealed him to be in possession of counterfeit money.

A Saline County Sheriff's deputy was driving in the 200 block of N. College Avenue in Salina at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday when he noticed a 2004 Ford Expedition driving suspiciously and erratically, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

The deputy became more suspicious when he pulled the SUV over and began talking with the driver. Melander said the driver originally gave the deputy a false name and date of birth, however he was later identified as Sylvester Mitchell, Jr., 28, of Garden City.

Mitchell was taken into custody, and as he was being searched, the deputy allegedly located 10 counterfeit $100 bills in Mitchell's wallet.

Melander said Mitchell was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges

●Operating a motor vehicle without a license

●Parking/standing/stopping in a prohibited area
