A local woman was transported to the hospital after the SUV she was driving rear-ended another vehicle in south Salina Thursday evening.

A 2008 Toyota Prius driven by Amy Smith, 50, of Salina, was southbound on S. Ohio Street and stopped while waiting on the vehicle in front to turn left onto Nottingham Drive when a 2018 Buick Envision driven by Eleanor Ulrich, 74, of Salina, rear-ended the Prius, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. Thursday.

Ulrich was injured and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said. Additionally, a 54-year-old man who was a passenger in the Prius, had possible minor injuries.

The Envision sustained front end damage and the Prius rear-end damage, Forrester said. Both were towed from the scene.

Ulrich was cited for inattentive driving, Forrester said.

Salina Tech launching dental hygiene program

Police are looking for a bright yellow motor scooter and the person who stole it earlier this week from a Salina residence.

The owners of the 1998 Honda Elite motor scooter told police that they had last seen it parked in their driveway in the 800 block of Park Street at 7 p.m. Wednesday, but that it was missing at 8 a.m. Thursday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The motor scooter, valued at $1,000, had a Kansas license plate of 76CXH. It also had a milk crate attached to the back, Forrester said. 

The owners told police that they had in their possession the only known key to the motor scooter.

Bright yellow motor scooter stolen from Salina residence

A 12-year-old boy is being referred to juvenile court on multiple requested charges after a number of panes of glass were broken at a west-central Salina school.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were sent to Opportunity Now, 501 W. Cloud, on Thursday for a report of an out-of-control boy damaging windows. When they arrived, they found the boy by the entry.

The boy allegedly damaged windows and glass doors with river rock he found outside, Forrester said.

In total, nine pieces of glass were broken, Forrester said. Damage was estimated in excess of $5,000.

The boy also allegedly threw a rock at an officer and struck a school employee, Forrester said.

The boy is being referred to juvenile court on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

On Friday, March 18, 2022, officers with the Salina Police Department received a report of a business burglary and damage to property at 1634 Sunflower Road, the former Jumpin’ Joe’s Family Fun Center.

The victim reported that sometime between Feb. 15 and March 18, 2022, an unknown suspect(s)&nbsp;entered the building and caused substantial damage inside. Gaming equipment, electronics, walls, floors, and go-carts were vandalized. The damage to the building is estimated to be in excess of $50,000. The victim also discovered a clear bowling ball and an unknown brand paintball gun were stolen from inside.

Our son is in high school, and he has a part-time job. He makes good grades, and we have always tried to teach him how to save and handle money according to your advice. A regular participant in downtown Salina's monthly First Friday celebration, The Flower Nook, 208 E. Iron Avenue, has scheduled its event for 5-7 p.m. Friday. The event is open to the public.

While The Flower Nook has a multitude of works to peruse, the creative efforts of three artists/artisans will be featured during the April First Friday.

The Random Expression exhibit features a variety of works by Debra Stovall-Tromble.

Mary Collins has a fused glass exhibit that includes display pieces and greeting cards with smaller fused glass ornaments or magnets.

Fran's Crafty Corner will feature a collection of no-epoxy tumblers whose themes include patriotic, country, and a little bit sassy.

In addition, Susie's Sprinkles will be on hand with a variety of Kansas food samples, and Mason Bettles will provide music for the event.

Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat, 148 S. Santa Fe Avenue, also has an event scheduled for First Friday: an artist reception for William Counter from 5-7 p.m. Counter's Paris Paintings exhibit that celebrates French painting traditions, is on display in the retreat.

Central Kansas Mental Health Center

Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) welcomes Roger Barnhart as the new director of crisis services. 

Barnhart brings with him more than 25 years of experience in healthcare administration and five years as a hospital CEO and integrated care specialist.

Barnhart’s unique experience in developing major community collaborations for both rural and urban health care will be an asset for CKMHC’s service area, including the rural counties of Ottawa, Lincoln, Ellsworth, and Dickinson along with the city of Salina.

“Throughout my career I have observed how caring for the whole person creates better results for patients and their loved ones,” Barnhart stated. “I am excited to work with CKMHC and our community partners, providing that level of care for those experiencing a crisis in our region.”

The position of crisis director is a vital part of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC) transition. In this role, Barnhart will oversee the expansion of crisis services, build stronger community collaborations, and implement CCBHC best practices to address health disparities.&nbsp;

Barnhart’s experience building integrative care systems will support the CCBHC transition. “This is a unique and exciting opportunity to bring community partners together to provide the best possible care,” he said.

“In caring for our community, true community health is so much more than health care. The community needs to come together to treat the mind, body, and spirit, all issues affecting a person’s well-being for holistic care,” Barnhart said. “We cannot effectively treat a person if they do not have stable housing, stable work, and access to physical health care or services like addiction treatment. Crisis are cyclical, and it takes the whole community to break that cycle.”

Barnhart was born and raised in rural Kansas. After spending 10 years at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, he worked as an administrator and CEO for rural hospitals and various care organizations throughout Kansas. He received his undergraduate degree in Business Communications from Fort Hays State University, and obtained a Masters of Healthcare Administration from Webster University in Kansas City. He holds a certificate as a Community Health Worker from Wichita State University, and is currently enrolled in the Community Health program at K-State.

Small quake rattles part of eastern Marion County Wednesday

Police are looking for a vehicle that was stolen from a south Salina hotel Wednesday.

Jacob Galindo, 32, of Amarillo, Texas, told police that his blue 2020 Toyota Camry was in the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn, 3932 S. Ninth Street, when he left for work at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. When he returned to the hotel at approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the car was gone, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The car had a Texas license plate of NXX9417 and was valued at $20,000.

Galindo told police that last week he had lost the keys to his car, possibly outside the hotel, Forrester said.

A Salina woman died in an accident just before 8 a.m. Thursday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Ellaina M.&nbsp;Brightbill, 42, Salina, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near the N. Ninth Street exit.

She lost control of the vehicle due to the icy roadway.

The SUV veered into the median and struck a guardrail on the westbound side, crossed the westbound lanes, rolled and came to rest on the north side of Interstate 70 off the roadway.

EMS transported Brightbill to Salina Regional Health Center where she was pronounced dead. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Salina man arrested on requested charge of rape

Two people were taken to the hospital after a wreck in south Salina Wednesday night.

Chase Campbell, 21, of Salina, was southbound on Edward Street and stopped at the Edward Street/E. Magnolia Road intersection in a 2004 Mazda RX3. He then pulled into the intersection, not seeing a westbound 2019 Ford Edge driven by Brittany Strathman, 30, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The Mazda struck the Edge.

The wreck occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. Wednesday.

Both Campbell and Strathman sustained injuries and were transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The Mazda sustained driver's side and rear-end damage and the Edge sustained front-end damage, he said. Both vehicles were towed.

Forrester said that Campbell was cited for inattentive driving and Strathman was cited for no proof of insurance.

The Salina Police Department this morning issued the following statement concerning activation of the Emergency Accident Reporting Plan.

The “Emergency Accident Reporting Plan” has been implemented due to severe weather and/or hazardous driving conditions as the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the Department’s ability to respond in a timely manner.

Eligible accidents: Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

Driver requirements: Exchange personal information with the other driver(s) involved or property owner.&nbsp;Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours.

Emergency Accident Reporting Plan forms are available at the Salina Police Department, they are also available online at <a href="http://www.salina-ks.gov/reportsandnotifications">www.salina-ks.gov/reportsandnotifications</a> by selecting the Emergency Accident Report Form.

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of March. 

Employees make a donation of at least $5 and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. A total donation of $995 was presented to Memorial Health Foundation for the Memorial Health System Walking Trail.

The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

The 38th Salina Spring Poetry Series, sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, begins on Tuesday with a reading by spoken word poet and Colorado Poet Laureate Bobby LeFebre.

The reading is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Homewood Suites, 115 E. Mulberry Street, in the outdoor courtyard. The event is open to the public at no charge. Attendees are encouraged to donate to support visiting artist fees. A cash bar will be available for refreshments.

"What a way to kick off the 2022 Salina Spring Poetry Series! LeFebre is a powerful poet with great presence and delivery. I’ve admired his words and cultural work for years now and continue to cheer and celebrate the recognition he continues to receive. Believe me, when I say, I am as happy as anyone to see LeFebre read in Salina, Kansas," said Huascar Medina, poet laureate of Kansas.

LeFebre is an award-winning writer, performer, and cultural worker fusing a non-traditional multi-hyphenated professional identity to imagine new realities, empower communities, advance arts, and culture, and serve as an agent of provocation, transformation, equity, and social change. LeFebre’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Huffington Post, The Guardian, American Theater Magazine, NPR, and <a href="http://Poets.Org">poets.org</a>.

In 2019, LeFebre was named Colorado’s eighth poet laureate, making him the youngest and first person of color to be appointed to the position in its 100-year history. 

LeFebre holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the Metropolitan University of Denver and a master’s degree in art, literature, and culture from the University of Denver.
