A Garden City man was arrested early Tuesday morning in Salina after a search allegedly revealed him to be in possession of counterfeit money.

A Saline County Sheriff's deputy was driving in the 200 block of N. College Avenue in Salina at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday when he noticed a 2004 Ford Expedition driving suspiciously and erratically, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

The deputy became more suspicious when he pulled the SUV over and began talking with the driver. Melander said the driver originally gave the deputy a false name and date of birth, however he was later identified as Sylvester Mitchell, Jr., 28, of Garden City.

Mitchell was taken into custody, and as he was being searched, the deputy allegedly located 10 counterfeit $100 bills in Mitchell's wallet.

Melander said Mitchell was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges

●Operating a motor vehicle without a license

●Parking/standing/stopping in a prohibited area

Counterfeiting among requested charges for Garden City man

GYPSUM - A Gypsum man was arrested Sunday in connection to stolen items cases from Ottawa County, Great Bend, and Wichita.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeremiah Hayes said this morning that deputies were asked to assist the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in a burglary case involving a stolen skid steer and other equipment. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, through its investigation, had determined that the missing skid steer was at 419 E. Second Street in Gypsum, in southeastern Saline County.

Once in Gypsum, the Ottawa County deputies could see the skid steer on the property from the street.

Hayes said that when Theodore Meadows, 45, of Gypsum, exited the residence and saw a number of law enforcement personnel outside, he ran, but was apprehended nearby.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office obtained a search warrant and was able to recover the skid steer, a number of attachments for it, and a cordless drill.

Hayes said that during the search, a 2000 Ford F250 reported stolen out of Great Bend also was located.

Additionally, a license plate reported stolen out of Wichita was found.

In all, more than $20,000 worth of stolen equipment and items were found on the property, Hayes said.

Meadows was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Hayes.

●Two counts of felony possession of stolen property

●Misdemeanor possession of stolen property

Red flag warnings issued across our area for Tuesday

Financial literacy&nbsp;is the possession of skills that allows people to make smart decisions with their money. Although understanding stats and facts about money is great, no one has truly grasped financial literacy until they can regularly do the&nbsp;right&nbsp;things with money that lead to the&nbsp;right&nbsp;financial outcomes. When you have this skill set, you’re able to understand the major financial issues most people face: emergencies, debts, investments and beyond.

Financially literate people&nbsp;know their way around a budget, know how to use sinking funds, and know the difference between a 401(k) and a 529 plan. Here are just a few of the concepts financially literate consumers have mastered:

Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and it’s largely because of a gap between what the math says they can afford and what they actually spend. Financial literacy can make people habitual budgeters who are willing to&nbsp;save for their goals&nbsp;and delay gratification to have peace of mind today&nbsp;and&nbsp;in the future.

Only 44% of Americans would be able to cover a $1,000 emergency today. About 40% wouldn’t be able to cover a $400 emergency. People who become financially literate understand the wisdom of saving for those times when life happens.

In addition to mortgages, which amount to nearly $9 trillion in debt nationwide, Americans are burdened with auto loans, credit cards and student loans. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported in 2018 that the total consumer debt in America had reached $3.95 trillion. To see how that debt load impacts daily living, consider the fact Northwestern Mutual reported that 40% of Americans spend up to half of their monthly income in debt payments. A big part of financial literacy focuses on understanding how the time and money people spend on paying off debt hurts their ability to invest in their future.

While there’s no one sure way to measure how many people are financially literate, the lack of certain skills would confirm that guess. For example, if you used the number of people who don’t live paycheck to paycheck as an estimate of financial literacy,&nbsp;only about 20% of people would qualify.

To help you decide whether you should include yourself among the financially literate, think through the following questions:

●Do you know how to create a monthly budget that includes all your basic expenses, your bills, any debts and your sinking funds for future purchases?

●Are you currently debt-free, or are you taking active steps to reduce your debts?

●Do you know about how much you spend to cover living expenses over a period of three to six months?

●Do you have an emergency fund in place that would allow you to get through a sudden, unexpected life event without borrowing money?

●Do you understand how compound interest allows invested money to grow over time?

●Do you know the various&nbsp;kinds of insurance needed&nbsp;to protect your finances and investments?

●Do you understand the difference between an investment and insurance?

Hopefully, you were able to answer “yes” to all—or at least some—of the assessment questions. But in case you found yourself answering “no” to some, don’t be discouraged. There are steps you can take to get a better understanding of how money works:

1. Start a beginner emergency fund

Begin by saving up $1,000. This is to keep you from being thrown off track when those inevitable, tough financial events hit you. Don’t worry if this doesn’t sound like a lot of money. You’ll be growing this emergency fund very soon.

To rid yourself of debt, start by listing them from smallest to largest. Then,&nbsp;use the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/get-out-of-debt-with-the-debt-snowball-plan" target="_blank">debt snowball method</a>&nbsp;to pay them off.&nbsp;As you pay off the smallest debt, roll what you used to pay toward it onto the next largest debt. Repeat this process until all your debts, except for your mortgage, are gone.

To complete this step, move all the money you freed up while paying off debt toward growing your emergency fund to three to six months of expenses.

4. Invest 15% of your income for retirement

It’s never too late to plan for retirement. Eighty-seven percent of students who take a finance class agree they feel confident about investing. You can face the future with hope when you have a&nbsp;plan that includes smart retirement investment.

Use good growth stock mutual funds in a tax-advantaged retirement savings plan like a 401(k) or Roth IRA. Investing 15% can help ensure you beat inflation over the long haul, while still having enough income to put toward paying off your home.

Over half (51%) of students who learn about finance in high school plan to pay for college themselves. Two of the best methods are Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) and 529 plans.

This monthly housing payment is one of the biggest expenses for most people. Imagine owning your home free and clear!

7. Build wealth, and give generously

On March 29, 2004, President George W. Bush welcomed seven former Soviet-bloc nations (Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Latvia and Estonia) into NATO during a White House ceremony.

The Kansas Department of Transportation announces the winners of the 2022 Kansas Aviation Art Contest, challenging young people to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. The contest is co-sponsored by the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education (KCAE).

“This art contest showcases the talent of our next generation and inspires us to share their enthusiasm for a bright future in aviation,” said Bob Brock, KDOT director of aviation.

A private award ceremony will take place in the Kansas statehouse on Wednesday. The event will include a photo opportunity with Governor Laura Kelly, a historical statehouse tour and refreshments. The first-place winner in each age group receives a prize package from KCAE, including a drone and several other prizes. All state winners will be submitted to the International Aviation Art Contest hosted by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

“Bringing the ‘art’ of aviation to the classroom engages students’ creativity while highlighting careers in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics,” said Logan Falletti-Wright, President of KCAE.

The Salina Family YMCA is participating in the Five Days of Action, April 18-22. The Five Days of Action is a weeklong campaign to raise awareness and inspire adults to take action to protect children from sexual abuse.

The Y encourages adults and organizations to join in marking this special week as Salina comes together to make the community a safer place for children to live, learn, and play. With summer right around the corner—when children gather for activities and camps, it is a wonderful time to bring attention to the simple ways we can all make the children in our community safer.

During the Five Days of Action, the Salina Family YMCA will be engaging these critical steps of prevention, KNOW. SEE. RESPOND. that will help adults better protect children. When adults know how abuse happens, see the warning signs, and respond quickly to prevent abuse, they foster a culture of child abuse prevention. Together, we can bring awareness to the issue of child sexual abuse in our communities and have important conversations about how we can all work together to prevent it from happening.

“The children of Salina have the right to a happy and safe childhood, and it's our responsibility as adults and organizations to stand up to protect that right,” said Marti Higdon, senior director of community outreach and Praesidium Guardian at the Y. “By joining in the Five Days of Action’s KNOW. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and scattered power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

MARION COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; the death of a man in Marion County.

On Sunday, the Marion County sheriff's deputies responded to an address in Lehigh reference a person unresponsive, according to a media release.

  Through their investigation, it was determined an altercation occurred in McPherson County around in the 1000 block of 21st Avenue.

 The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the altercation that occurred in McPherson County.  The Marion County Sheriff’s Office informed the sheriff's office a 32-year-old man was found deceased. 

Authorities released no additional details on Monday afternoon. Anyone with information on this incident, please contact the McPherson County Sheriff’s office.

UPDATE: NWS issues red flag warnings, fire weather watch

PAWNEE COUNTY, Neb. —The Nebraska State Patrol has completed a three-day search operation as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Linda Dillard. Although the search effort did not locate Dillard’s remains, significant ground was covered that will assist in the investigation, according to a media release from the patrol.

“What our investigators learned this week directs the case into the next phase,” said Lt. Eric Jones, of NSP Investigative Services. “We are now confident that Linda is not in this large area. Our investigators continue to believe Linda may have been the victim of a crime. We urge anyone with information or anyone who was involved in her disappearance to come forward.”

Numerous tips have been received through Nebraska Crime Stoppers and other avenues in recent days.&nbsp;Nebraska Crime Stoppers continues to offer a reward for information in this investigation. Throughout the three-day operation, teams searched more than 1,100 acres of land in and around the Table Rock State Wildlife Management Area, 24 miles of roadside ditches, 1.5 miles of river, 2 local farms, and a local lake area. The search team consisted of 44 law enforcement officers, 65 volunteers and support personnel, 15 mounted patrol teams, and 8 dog teams trained for human remains detection.

“We’d like to thank our partners in this week’s operation,” said Lt. Jones. “This large effort would not have been possible without their assistance.”

The search operation included partners from multiple states, including the Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, NecroSearch International, Brown County (KS) Mounted Search and Rescue, Saline County (KS) Mounted Patrol and Rescue, Sedgwick County (KS) Emergency Management, HRD Canine Search and Rescue Teams, University of Nebraska Department of Forensic Anthropology, Kawasaki of Lincoln, and the Tiger Pride Community Group of Table Rock.

No remains found after 3-day search for missing Neb. woman

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The&nbsp;Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a stream advisory for the Republican River near Concordia, Kansas.

The stream advisory is a result of operation problems at the city of Concordia Wastewater Treatment Plant which resulted in a wastewater discharge containing elevated bacteria levels. The city of Concordia Wastewater Treatment Plant has repaired the problem.
