A "one-of-a-kind" musical is coming to the Salina South stage.

Salina South’s Performing Arts Department will present Shrek, the Musical&nbsp;at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 and 2 and 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in the auditorium at Salina South High School, 730 E. Magnolia Road.&nbsp; Please check the website for ticket info and for updates if any dates/times should change.&nbsp;

Seating is reserved and tickets will be available online at <a href="http://www.salinasouththeatre.com">www.salinasouththeatre.com</a> or at the door 30 minutes prior to performances. Getting tickets in advance is highly encouraged. Ticket prices are as follows.

Parking will be on the southwest side of the building, with entrances off of Magnolia and Edward Street.

Smoky Valley USD 400 selects Hogan as next superintendent

Police are investigating a case of arson that occurred in west Salina early this morning.

A 22-year-old Salina woman told police that on her security camera feed she saw someone messing around outside her residence in the 1300 block of W. Cloud Street at approximately 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. When she looked out the window, she saw an orange glow coming from her vehicle, a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible.

When the woman went outside, she found her vehicle on fire and saw a man riding by slowly on a bicycle. When the bicyclist saw her, he sped up, Forrester said.

An active road flare was determined to be the cause of the fire. It is believed the flare was placed on the convertible top and then burned through, dropping into the driver's seat and catching the seat on fire. 

Salina Fire Department personnel were able to put out the fire with only damage to the seat and convertible top, Forrester said. Damage was estimated at $600.

With unemployment rates at a historical low nationally, a big question looms: how do businesses retain their staff? Trish Petak, Kansas Wesleyan University’s associate professor of business and accounting, offers a simple answer.

In her recently published paper, “One Thing Managers Need to do to Inspire, Excite, Motivate, and Retain Employees – Recognize Strong Work Performance,” she emphasizes the need for positive relationships between managers and their staff.

“Previous research has proven organizations benefit when employees display inspiration, excitement, motivation and plans of retention,” she said. “I wanted to measure if management acknowledging an employee’s efforts and contributions had a strong, positive correlation with those benefits.”

The paper, published by the Journal of Business and Educational Leadership – and additionally voted the best article of the 11th&nbsp;volume of the publication – provided evidence for Petak’s claim.

By surveying 63 volunteers, Petak discovered that good management practices, particularly those that involved praise and recognition of employees, almost always resulted in employees expressing positive feelings towards their place of work.

Of the 26.96 percent of the volunteers who strongly agreed that their management “recognized strong work performance,” upwards of 80 percent cited feeling more inspired, motivated and likely to stay with their company. Those who answered the same question, but did not agree with the sentiment, reported feeling the opposite about the workplace.

“It’s our job as managers to make others feel good about themselves by recognizing their workplace contributions.”

Petak applies the concept explored in her research paper to her roles as educator, advisor, and coach of KWU’s DECA program.

“The findings within my research reiterate the power of positive feedback,” she said. “I try to be intentional about providing my students meaningful, frequent and real-time feedback.”

In addition to the current publication, Petak will be presenting a new research study in March 2022 at the 29th&nbsp;The American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences conference in Las Vegas.

While her findings from this paper have yet to be released, it could not have been done without the positive relationships Petak built with her colleagues and students. With their help, she completed a second paper, titled “Buyer Beware: The Influence Online Reviews Have on a Consumer’s Willingness to Buy.”

“Last spring, students in Dr. [Paul] Hedlund’s Marketing Research course helped me fine tune my research survey questions after presenting them a rough draft. Once the survey went live, many KWU students, staff, faculty and administrators completed it,” she said. “Students were the real MVPs of the data collection, and many had their friends and family complete the survey. Because of their efforts, we collected data on 503 anonymous online shoppers.

“This really shows the Power of the Pack.”

The jail project, American Rescue Plan Act, and a quarterly budget update are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

Saline County Commission is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street. The meetings also can be viewed on Saline County’s YouTube channel:

Commissioners are scheduled to consider the second guaranteed maximum price contract amendment for the Saline County Jail project. The amendment is for $53,755,096, and includes all remaining construction work that was not included in the first guaranteed maximum price contract amendment, according to information in the commission meeting packet. If approved, the amendment would bring the agreement with Turner Construction Company to $78,790,596.

The project is still scheduled to be completed by Sept. 25, 2023, according to information from the county.

In a related matter, commissioners are being asked to consider a request from the City of Salina for two permanent easements at the new jail site at 800 E. Pacific Avenue. One easement would be for site drainage and the other for site utilities (water and sewer). The easements would conform with the jail project design.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider additional programs to be funded with money the county received because of the American Rescue Plan Act. The funds, a total of $10,532,376, came to the county through the through the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Relief Fund (CLFRF). Programs commissioners are scheduled to consider include the following.

County Cash: Through this program, the county would partner with an app developed by Colu that would allow residents to invest their own money at local businesses, earn points to be known as "County Cash," and use those points as rewards at other businesses, according to information in the commission meeting packet.

"CLFRF dollars would be used to fund four distinct parts of this: the cost of Colu’s software, the cost of promotion of the program (including staff at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce to promote the app to area businesses), a 'rewards and incentives bucket' to fund the cost of reimbursing local businesses for the products or services redeemed by residents as well as incentivizing behaviors such as buying from businesses that are having particular challenges, and a per-business-per-month fee for a third party payment firm to transmit the rewards and incentives money to local businesses," according to information in the commission meeting packet.

Similar programs have been successfully used at other locations, including Boston, Mass., and Akron, Ohio, according to information from the county.

Increasing the pool of commercial truck drivers: For this program, the county "would partner with the Salina Salina Area Technical College to increase the college’s ability to train Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) candidates. This would directly benefit local employers (including Saline County) who face a shortage of CDL drivers and would also help local residents who have been impacted by pandemic-related lay-offs or reductions in hours to reskill for an indemand occupation," county staff noted in the meeting packet information.

Advanced education for law enforcement officers: The county "would partner with Kansas Wesleyan University to provide 45 hours of credit-bearing classes to 25 sworn officers of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Salina Police Department. This would allow those officers to get as much as three-quarters of the way to a Bachelor’s degree with no tuition cost. This would serve as a recruitment and retention tool for our local law enforcement agencies as well as provide officers of those agencies advanced skills that would benefit the community," according to information in the meeting packet.

Cope Notes: In this program, the county "would contract with an app called Cope Notes which provides daily text messages to users that offer supportive mental health messages. While a text messaging app does not replace therapy or medication, it has been developed using cognitive science to reframe a person’s state of mind to be more positive and resilient in the face of challenges such as a global pandemic. Up to 200 subscribers could be added to Cope Notes in Saline County," according to information in the meeting packet.

SALINE COUNTY—A Saline County woman and four children were injured in an accident just after 8 a.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Impala driven by&nbsp; Jessica L. Butler, 36, New Cambria, was eastbound on Old 40 Highway just west of Donmyer Road, 2.5 miles west of Solomon.

&nbsp;The car traveled off the south edge of the roadway, struck a ditch embankment and came to rest after striking a fence along the railroad access.

EMS transported Butler and four children ages 10, 9, 5, and 4, all of New Cambria, to Salina Regional Health Center. The two younger children no apparent injuries. The 9-year-old was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The KHP did not have complete seat belt usage information.&nbsp;

Saline County: 299 new COVID-19 cases; 10,132 of 13,008 cases recovered

A Texas man wanted in connection to the shooting death of a Salina man in August has been arrested.

The Salina Police Department announced this afternoon that Jacob Martin Leos, 22, of Justin, Texas, was arrested in Justin, Texas, on Jan. 11, in connection to the shooting death of Camilo Renaldo Ramirez. 

Ramirez was shot near the intersection of Front Street and E. Iron Avenue shortly after 4 a.m. Aug. 23. Police, who were dispatched to the area for the report of gunshots, found Ramirez in the street. His dog was found dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot, acording to information from the department.

Ramirez died in a Wichita hospital on Aug. 24.

Later that week, police reported that three people had been arrested in connection to the case. They were:

Kiera Stewart, 22, of Salina, who was arrested on requested charges of felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery.

Jaime Leos, Jr., 24, of Salina, who was arrested on requested charges of attempted first degree murder (later upgraded to first degree murder), felony animal cruelty, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and other narcotics related charges.

Juan Doroteo Morales, 34, of Salina, who was arrested on attempted first degree murder (later upgraded to first degree murder), felony animal cruelty, and felon in possession of a firearm.

Jacob Martin Leos was booked into the Saline County Jail last week on the following requested charges, according to information released by the Salina Police Department today.

Salina police also announced that Amy Norton of the Kansas Attorney General's Office will be prosecuting the case.

Fourth arrest made in shooting death of Salina man in August

A Salina man with outstanding warrants was arrested after running twice, once from a bondsman and once from police.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 800 block of W. Walnut Street Friday afternoon for the report of a male who had escaped from a bondsman, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. A bondsman from Eagle Bonds had called the law enforcement dispatch center to report that David Moreno, 39, of Salina, had been taken into custody for outstanding warrants and was placed in handcuffs.  When Moreno was being taken out of the residence, he ran, according to Forrester.

Witnesses told police that Moreno was seen entering a residence in the 500 block of Montrose Street. Officers surrounded the residence and Moreno eventually exited the house and was taken into custody, however while police were waiting on a patrol vehicle for transport, Moreno again fled on foot while handcuffed, Forrester noted. Following a brief foot pursuit, Moreno was taken into custody in the 400 block of Montrose Street.

Moreno had two active warrants out of Saline County District Court for probation violation and failure to appear. Additionally, Moreno was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

UPDATE: Local, area students among Bethany spring student teachers

UPDATE 10:30 a.m. Monday: The Salina Police Department has provided additional information about the pursuit of Tiani Barnes. It is as follows.

At approximately 1:05 a.m. Saturday, an officer attempted to stop in the 200 block of W. North Street a 2006 Mazda MPV minivan for not having a tag light, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The vehicle failed to stop and continued westbound on W. North Street before turning south on N. Broadway Boulevard.

According to Forrester, the vehicle was traveling at speeds of approximately 80 mph, and in the 400 block of N. Broadway Boulevard, the vehicle moved into the northbound lanes while traveling southbound. Although the vehicle moved back into the southbound lanes, it again crossed over and was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic in the 300 block of S. Broadway Boulevard, he noted. At that point, the officer ended the pursuit.

The officer observed the vehicle turn east on W. Crawford Street, into Sunset Plaza parking lot, and then onto Plaza Drive, Forrester reported. The vehicle was later observed going westbound on Franklin Street. 

A bit later, the Saline County deputy attempted to stop the minivan. See below.

A Salina woman who earlier had been pursued by police was arrested early Saturday morning by a Saline County deputy after a pursuit through the city that ended with a crash into a privacy fence.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeremiah Hayes said this morning that at approximately 1 a.m. on Saturday, a deputy observed a Mazda minivan near the intersection of W. Crawford Street and Montrose Street that earlier had been the subject of a pursuit by the Salina Police Department. The deputy attempted to pull over the minivan, but it took off and another pursuit ensued. 

The pursuit, which at times was in excess of 70 mph, went across the city to the area of the S. Ohio Street/Albert Avenue intersection, and then headed north to E. Prescott Road. At times, the driver, identified as Tiani Barnes, 27, of Salina, allegedly drove into on-coming traffic, Hayes said. The pursuit then headed toward the west side of the city near the S. Broadway Boulevard/W. Walnut Street intersection. 

The minivan crashed into a privacy fence in the 700 block of W. Walnut Street, and Barnes was taken into custody, Hayes said.

Barnes was arrested on the following requested charges, Hayes said.

 </figure>The pursuit, which at times was in excess of 70 mph, went across the city to the area of the S. Ohio Street/Albert Avenue intersection, and then headed north to E. Prescott Road. At times, the driver, identified as Tiani Barnes, 27, of Salina, allegedly drove into on-coming traffic, Hayes said. The pursuit then headed toward the west side of the city near the S. Broadway Boulevard/W. Walnut Street intersection. The minivan crashed into a privacy fence in the 700 block of W. Walnut Street, and Barnes was taken into custody, Hayes said.Barnes was arrested on the following requested charges, Hayes said.●Felony flee and elude●Possession of methamphetamine●Possession of marijuana●Possession of drug paraphernalia●Reckless driving●Transporting an open container●Multiple traffic violations

KUTC is "working with OCCK Transportation to evaluate and analyze the city's public transportation system. In order to better understand and serve the city, we conducted online focus group and stakeholder meetings in the past two weeks. We appreciate you all who joined us and shared your resourceful thoughts and experiences, and this will benefit our study to a great extent," the organization noted in a news release.

Additionally, an online survey is available for those who did not participate in the above mentioned gatherings. The online survey is available until Jan. 31.

"Your input is invaluable for the future of the Salina public transit system," KUTC noted.
