WICHITA – With the majority of winter still ahead, and an increasing number of calls coming in, AAA Kansas is urging motorists to pay attention to the two tire issues most likely to result in the need for emergency roadside service.

“In just the first few weeks of the year we have seen tire-related calls that amount to more than 20% of the total volume for all of last winter – and we still have almost two months to go,” said Jon Burgett, AAA Kansas Emergency Roadside Service supervisor in the Wichita area. “Drivers must make sure their tires are properly inflated and that they have sufficient tread to grip wet or snow-covered roads.”

At this time, AAA is seeing tire-related call volume in Kansas exceeding what it was pre-pandemic. From Jan. 1-18, 2022, AAA roadside assistance calls for tire problems are&nbsp;up nearly 23% when compared to the same period in 2019, so drivers are encouraged to pay attention to their tires – or pay a price.

“Neglecting basic vehicle maintenance, such as rotating tires, has been far too common throughout the pandemic, resulting in more wear and tear – and additional expense,” Burgett said. “Routines may have changed, but routine car care is still critical.”

Tires that have not been properly inflated to adjust for colder temperatures are more likely to result in a flat or blowout and tires with a worn tread are more likely to result in a crash. The good news, though, is that both of these tire troubles are easy to resolve.

Check Tire Pressure Keeping your vehicle’s tires properly inflated to the automaker’s recommended pressures is a critical element of tire maintenance. Tires that contain the specified amount of air pressure last longer and contribute to vehicle safety.

●Check tire inflation pressure on all four tires and the spare.

●As the average temperature drops, so will tire pressures – typically by one PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

●The proper tire pressure levels can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker typically located on the driver’s side doorjamb (Do not use the pressure molded into the tire sidewall).&nbsp;

Check Tire Tread Adequate tread depth is necessary for a tire to maintain traction on slippery roads. You can measure tread depth with an inexpensive gauge available at any auto parts store or… you can use the traditional quarter test demonstrated in the photo.

Insert a quarter into a tread groove with the top of Washington's head facing down. If the top of his head is not visible, your tires are fine for continued use. If you can see above the top of Washington's head, it is time to start shopping for new tires. Take multiple measurements across the tread to help ensure accurate results.

●Winter storms, bad weather&nbsp;and&nbsp;sloppy road conditions are a factor in nearly half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths every winter, according to research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

 ●Previous AAA research indicates that driving on worn tires at highway speeds increase stopping distance by a staggering 43% compared to new tires, putting drivers, and their passengers, at increased risk.

●AAA urges drivers to check tread depth, replace tires proactively, and increase following distances significantly when roadways are wet or snow-covered.

AAA: Two tire troubles to avoid this winter

The Salina Souper Bowl of Hope needs your help!

The annual soup collection for the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, Ashby House, and DVACK is going on now until Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 13. This year's goal is 56,000 cans of soup.

"We are asking businesses and churches to help us with our goal," Salina Souper Bowl of Hope organizers noted in a news release.

Donations of both cans of soup and money will be accepted. 

"$25 will allow us to buy 60 cans of soup," the organizers noted.

There are several ways for groups to make sure their contributions go toward Souper Bowl of Hope. They are as follows.

Contributions can be dropped off at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, 255 S. Chicago, the week of Feb. 14 (9 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday). Please take your contributions to the west side of the building by the garage door. 

You also can call 785-452-5008 to arrange for your contributions to be picked up.

The organizers ask that you have your contributions counted prior to pickup or drop off.

Additionally, contributions will be collected at Salina Dillons stores this Saturday and Sunday, and on Feb. 5, 6, and 12.

Following is the Saline County Health Department COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

Three additional members of our community have lost their lives to COVID-19 since our last update on Friday.

Another 279 people have had COVID-19 positive test results reported to the Saline County Health Department.

The Salina Regional Health Center reports that 19 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

There are a recorded 2,695 active cases of COVID-19. Due to this overwhelmingly high number of cases, the Saline County Health Department will only be contacting those under 18 years old or who have requested an isolation letter for their employers.

Saline County: 3 additional deaths, 279 new COVID-19 cases

You can get your first in-person look at the first southern white rhino born at the Rolling Hills Zoo as early as Thursday!

This afternoon, the zoo announced that it will start allowing guests to see the male rhino calf on a trial basis beginning Thursday.

"This is a trial schedule as we continue to monitor mother, Evey, and her calf to guests in the barn. They have been doing great since the first of the year with new faces," said Brenda Gunder, Rolling Hills Zoo curator. "Our first priority is to the mother and calf, so if we should start to see signs of distress during visitation hours, the barn will be closed."

The rhino barn visitation schedule, as provided by Rolling Hills Zoo, is as follows.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The barn will remain closed to the public on Wednesdays.

Guests will be required to bring their own facemasks to enter the rhino barn. Strollers will not be allowed in the barn.

The calf was born on Dec. 9 and will be seven weeks old on Thursday. 

"As a bouncing baby boy, this calf is very curious as he explores his indoor habitat and runs zoomies from one side to the other. He enjoys brush scratches from his keepers, is developing his 'wallowing' skills, and has been seeing munching on mama’s hay. As any toddler will, he has also been seen nudging Evey to play, mouthing her face, eyes and ears, and bumping her with his developing horn. He will even put his two front feet on her as she is laying down to indicate that he’s ready to nurse," the zoo noted in a news release.

Rolling Hills Zoo announces visitation hours to see rhino calf

ABILENE - With a theme of Dwight D. Eisenhower: The Making of a Leader, the Eisenhower Presidential Library will kick off its 2022 Lunch &amp; Learn program on Thursday.

Minivan runs stop sign, strikes pickup; Salina woman cited

The City of Salina announced this morning the appointment of Jeff Hammond as director of Parks &amp; Recreation.

Hammond, formerly the city's deputy director of Parks &amp; Recreation, has been serving as interim director of the department since October.

"Following a national search and selection process, Jeff emerged as our top candidate. Jeff is well rounded with his private and public sector experience," City Manager Schrage said. "He joined our organization in 2016, and since that time, has applied his leadership in aquatics, recreation, facilities, special events, and budget management. We are excited to have Jeff continue his professional journey within our organization."

Hammond is a certified Park and Recreation Professional. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Bowling Green State University, and a master’s degree in Recreation Administration from the University of Toledo, according to information from the city.

The director's position came open when&nbsp;Chris Cotten was appointed as the director of parks and recreation for the City of Kansas City, Mo., last fall.

Police are investigating the theft of an electric bicycle from a secured Salina backyard.

A 50-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between 10 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday, someone stole his ECO TRIC, pedal assist electric bicycle from his fenced-in back yard in the 200 block of Baker Street, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. The fence is a privacy fence and the gate was secured with a padlock, so the bicycle had to have been lifted over the fence, Forrester noted.

The bicycle was described as being matte black with green and white lettering and having four-inch wide tires. The digital mileage display showed the bicycle to have approximately 1,600 miles on it.

A Salina man was arrested on multiple requested charges including battery of a law enforcement officer after an incident Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were sent to the 24/7 Travel Store, 2239 N. Ninth Street, at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday for the report of a male customer throwing credit cards, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. When they arrived, they found the man, identified as Maurio Williams, 38, of Salina, on the east side of the business.

Williams had an active warrant for failure to appear from Saline County District Court. The officers also learned that Williams had an active failure to appear warrant from Salina Municipal Court.

According to Forrester, when the officers attempted to take Williams into custody, Williams allegedly shoved one of the officers in the chest and a physical altercation ensued. Williams and the officers ended up on the ground, Forrester noted.

Williams was placed into a bodyguard restraint system for transport. While the restraint was being secured, Williams allegedly spit in the face of one of the officers. 

Williams was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

Local man arrested after incident at north Salina business

MINNEAPOLIS – A Salina man has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for aggravated robbery and aggravated assault, the Kansas Attorney General's Office announced this morning.

Robert Shepherd, 34, of Salina, was sentenced Tuesday in Ottawa County District Court by Chief Judge Rene S. Young to 69 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility for one count of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated assault, the attorney general's office noted in a news release.

Young ordered Shepherd to serve the sentences consecutively, along with four misdemeanor case convictions he was serving a sentence on and six felony cases he was serving probation on at the time the crime was committed. His entire sentence for the 11 cases will be 125 months in prison. Shepherd also was sentenced to pay $1,276.84 in restitution.

The crimes took place in September 2020 when Shepherd held a man at gunpoint, robbed him, and forced him to make withdraws of cash from several ATMs and gas stations. Codefendant, Chad Rico, 33, of Tescott, was sentenced last week to more than 22 years in prison on related charges, the attorney general's office noted. Shepherd was convicted of the crimes on Nov. 9, 2021.

Salina man gets 5+ years in prison for agg. robbery and assault

January generally means implementing warmer socks, warmer drinks and warmer meals on our farm. The days require additional layers of work clothes while we load our stored grain into trucks headed to feed yards, mills or ethanol plants. Breakfast at our table is now enjoyed with the addition of warm mugs of hot cocoa before the kids have to bundle up to catch their bus for school. Meals are planned to intentionally utilize the oven to warm the kitchen while also making food that will warm bellies. &nbsp; It’s no secret I’m not a fan of winter. The colder and darker days do not make me favor this season in the slightest. In fact, if I had a choice, I’d spend my winter days as far south as possible. &nbsp; The extra layers, constant chill and seemingly dreary days do not bode well with me. They never have, and I suspect they never will. Perhaps it’s because I was a beach and desert dweller in my childhood. Perhaps it’s the many memories from the early days of my marriage of cold, newborn calves being brought inside the house to get warmed up and healthy. Perhaps it’s the idea that my children can’t enjoy recess outside due to the windchill. Whatever the reason, winter will always rank last for me. &nbsp; Yes, the chill of winter has set in. And with that, I’m constantly on the lookout for reminders to help me adjust my attitude and warm my spirit during this time of the year.&nbsp; &nbsp; During my daily walk to check the mail, I look forward to opening the box to discover a new catalog highlighting seeds and gardening essentials. It’s a reminder that spring planting is near, and I have the opportunity to plan for a future harvest of homegrown goodies during these cold days. &nbsp; The beautifully made quilts and blankets I have been gifted over time have now been brought out of storage and added to the backs of our sitting chairs or spread over beds. All too often these handmade treasures seem too heavy or too hot during the rest of the year, but now are a perfect addition. These items not only offer warmth while I read in the evenings or snuggle in at night; they also warm my heart as I remember those who made these precious gifts. &nbsp; Since the winter’s cold pushes my kids and husband into the house sooner in the evenings, I have the opportunity to enjoy more of their company. Whether it’s to play a game together, facilitate a science experiment or crafting session, or simply sitting together to enjoy a movie, I know once the days get longer and warmer this time will become less frequent. Having my little family together is something I cherish during the cold, dark winter months.&nbsp; &nbsp; Yes, even in the depths of winter, there are reminders of warmth all around. You just have to recognize them when you experience them.

The Dana Adams Project 1893: A First Thursday presentation

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 26, the 26th day of 2022. There are 339 days left in the year. 

On Jan. 26, 2020, the U.S. consulate in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic, said it would evacuate its personnel and some private citizens aboard a charter flight. Five cases of the new coronavirus were now confirmed in the United States, including new cases in California and Arizona; all involved people who had traveled to Wuhan. 

In 1861, Louisiana passed an Ordinance of Secession, becoming the sixth state to break free from the United States.

In 2016, the FBI arrested the leaders of an armed group that was occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon for more than three weeks during a traffic stop that left one man, Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, dead. Character actor Abe Vigoda, 94, died in Woodland Park, New Jersey.

In 2020, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others were killed when their helicopter plunged into a steep hillside in dense morning fog in Southern California; the former Lakers star was 41. Eighteen-year-old singer Billie Eilish made history at the Grammy Awards, becoming the youngest to win one of Grammy's top awards and the first to sweep all four in nearly 40 years.

Ten years ago: The Pentagon outlined a plan for slowing the growth of military spending, including cutting the size of the Army and Marine Corps, retiring older planes and trimming war costs. In addition, donors with COVID must wait 14 days after their symptoms resolve or, if they are asymptomatic, after a positive test before giving blood again&nbsp;

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.&nbsp;Health insights for donors &nbsp;At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross is screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait.
