UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Wednesday: The City of Salina has issued an update to its earlier statement concerning the incoming storm. It is as follows.

Heavy rains and snow are forecasted to begin late tonight, February 16, and into the early morning of Thursday, February 17. These rains are forecasted to be followed by rapidly falling temperatures, transition from rain to sleet, and finally to snow by early Thursday morning.

Pretreatment of Salina’s roadways with salt and MgCl2 brine will not occur before the forecasted heavy rain, as it would likely be washed away by and not provide any benefit to the roadway conditions. Pretreating operations will commence late tonight or early Thursday morning as the rain diminishes and temperatures fall to near freezing, but prior to ice accumulations on the roadway. Initial accumulations of snow will be treated with salt and MgCl2 brine as necessary, and when accumulations merit plow arterial and residential roadways.

If snow accumulations are greater than 1.5” in depth, all arterial and collector streets will be plowed. If accumulations exceed 2” in depth, snow will be plowed in residential areas once arterial and collector streets have been plowed.

The public is asked to minimize travel during snow storms as much as possible. If travel is necessary, please be sure to clear your vehicle’s windshield and windows to improve visibility and your roof to reduce the amount of blowing snow for other motorists. Please allow extra stopping distance at intersections or between vehicles on the roadway.

The public is asked to also allow ample space when approaching snow removal equipment from behind, as the equipment will be distributing salt, which may cause limited visibility as snow is being removed from the roadway. Driving too closely to snow removal equipment could also present additional challenges and safety concerns for operators and other motorists.

Mixed precipitation changing to snow is forecast. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. Locally higher snow amounts are possible just west of the turnpike corridor.

Where snow occurs, snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour will be possible Thursday morning. The timing of the heaviest precipitation rates is expected from 4 am to noon Thursday.

Plan on hazardous road conditions. Blowing and drifting snow could significantly reduce visibility, especially on Thursday. The hazardous wintry conditions will have the greatest impact on the Thursday morning commute. The combination of gusty winds and the weight of snow and ice could bring down tree branches and lead to scattered power outages.

Winter storm warning, weather advisories issued for our area

The Saline County Sheriff's Office also plans to participate in a regional effort to raise awareness about roadway safety among teens.

Monday through March 4, the Saline County Sheriff's Office will join other law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma with increased enforcement near high schools.

In the United States, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for youths ages 15-18, the sheriff's office noted in a news release.

Deputies will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey traffic laws. The sheriff's office asks that adults remind teens that driving is a privilege and encourage them to learn the importance of safe driving.

The City of Salina is giving plenty of notice for its upcoming electronic waste recycling event.

The annual event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14 on the old runway at the Berkley Family Recreation Area along Markley Road. The city and American Recycling are hosting the event, according to information provided by the City of Salina.

Electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, keyboards, and microwaves that need to be discarded are among the items considered as ewaste.

Recycling electronic equipment not only preserves resources like aluminum, copper, gold, silver and ferrous metals; it potentially diverts toxic materials like mercury, lead, cadmium and flame retardants from the landfill. When electronic equipment is recycled, landfill space is also saved," the city noted in a news release.

While there are no limitations on the number of items that a person may recycle, there are some items that will not be accepted, including the following.

According to information from the city, fees will be collected for the following items.

Large appliances (stoves, furnaces, copiers, etc.): $25

Fees must be paid by cash, credit card, or check at the time of drop-off.

Persons wanting to drop off items are asked to enter the event area from Markley Road at the water tower, and then follow the traffic cones and signs to the drop-off location, according to the information from the city.

"Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles while staff members collect the e-waste. Once drop-off is complete, participants should exit onto Markley Road at Dean Evans Stadium," the city noted.

As I watched the Super Bowl, it occurred to me this is a truly American event only Americans really get. It is a sporting event that is really a national holiday where we celebrate commercials and eat ourselves into oblivion. For most of us the game is the third attraction. Only in the United States would we use the last football game of the season for a reason to gorge ourselves on food we would normally not eat. As I thought about all of this it occurred to me, the biggest MVPs of the Super Bowl are really us, the farmers and ranchers who are responsible for this impressive spread. I know the MVP of the Super Bowl is generally a superstar quarterback who makes more money than any of us will ever see, but I would argue the men and women responsible for all the appetizers, chips and dips, and desserts are the true stars. We take food for granted. Sure, the pandemic helped make consumers aware of how important and fragile the food supply is, but most of the time we forget just how good we have it. That is because as farmers and ranchers we have done such a tremendous job of growing food and fiber that consumers have become accustomed to having an array of available sustenance anytime they want it. In the case of our Super Bowl parties, we can find food we didn’t even know we needed. What we are celebrating during the Super Bowl is not the best two teams of the NFL. What we are really celebrating is the abundance that American agriculture provides our great nation. We are celebrating the vast variety and abundance we all have grown to expect in the grocery store. Shelves and shelves with choices we often take for granted. I know most of us don’t do this for recognition, we are just doing our jobs. But do you know what? We are the best in the world at what we do. No other nation produces as much food or utilizes its resources as well as we do here in the United States. We may not be paid millions of dollars like the superstars we watch in the Super Bowl, but we are just as good. That is something to be proud of. We may never be the MVP of the big game or get a championship ring for what we do, but I do know one thing for sure. The Super Bowl would be just another game without the wings, sliders and other snacks. The commercials would be just more annoying breaks between the game if it were not for the meat and cheese trays, veggies, and cookies. Do you know what? Those of us who produce all that great food really are the MVPs. At least in my book we are.

NWS provides latests snowfall forecast for our area

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a winter storm watch in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon that includes the following counties in our area.

Heavy mixed precipitation is possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 5 inches and ice accumulations of approximately one-tenth of an inch are possible. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

Where snow occurs, snowfall rates of one inch per hour can be expected. The timing of the heaviest precipitation rates is expected from 3 a.m. to noon Thursday.

Plan on slippery road conditions. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, especially on Thursday. The hazardous conditions will impact the Thursday morning and Thursday evening commutes. The combination of gusty winds and the weight of snow and ice could bring down tree branches and lead to scattered power outages.

PRATT&nbsp;– During their virtual public meeting last month, Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commissioners drew the names of seven lucky conservation organizations that will receive Kansas’ highly-coveted Commission big game permits. 

The program – which began in 2006 – allows Kansas chapters of eligible non-profit organizations to apply for one of seven big game permits, which can then be sold to raise funds for pre-approved conservation projects in Kansas.

One elk, one antelope or up to seven deer permits are issued each year, depending on applicant preference. The permits are either-species/either-sex and are valid statewide during any season with legal equipment for that season; and, they do not count against other big game permits the license holder is eligible for.

Once the permit is sold, 15 percent of the total sale price is kept by the organization. The remainder raised is then remitted to KDWP to be utilized on a jointly determined conservation project. Organizations drawn may receive just one Commission Big Game Permit in a three-year period.

In December 2021, 596 cases of COVID-19 were reported to McPherson County Health Department (MCHD). In January 2022, 1,834 cases were reported. As of this release, 395 cases have been reported for February 2022.

Effective January 31, 2022, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) took over all McPherson County COVID-19 case investigations. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19, you may call 785-542-6625 or email&nbsp;<a href="mailto:KDHE.COVIDinvestigation@ks.gov">KDHE.COVIDinvestigation@ks.gov</a>. You may also receive a text message from KDHE asking for you to complete a survey that will prioritize your need to be contacted based on your relation to congregate settings or need for an isolation letter. If you have a positive COVID-19 home test, we continue to recommend seeking lab confirmation by getting tested at a testing site. If you cannot do so, we recommend following isolation guidelines that can be found here <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/.../Isolation--Quarantine-Guidance-and-FAQs-PDF---12422">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/.../Isolation--Quarantine-Guidance-and-FAQs-PDF---12422</a>.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have changed the isolation and quarantine guidelines, which may be referred to as “the 5/5 rule.” People who test positive continue to have a 10 day isolation period, however, if the case is 24 hours fever free without fever-reducing medication and feels significantly better on day 5, they may leave home isolation on day 6 but only if they mask when around others through their 10 day period. If they cannot mask, they cannot leave home isolation. People who are named a close contact will continue to have a 10 day quarantine period, however, if the close contact is asymptomatic and/or tests negative on day 5, they may leave home quarantine on day 6 but only if they mask when around others through their 10 day period. If they cannot mask, they cannot leave home quarantine. The KDHE and MCHD will no longer contact trace effective February 1, 2022. This does not mean close contacts no longer need to quarantine. This means that close contacts will not be called by the state agency or local health department. This is in response to the overwhelming case counts and will allow the state agency and the local health department to prioritize case investigations. Positive cases will be instructed to contact their close contacts to notify them of the exposure.

The KDHE has also adopted a temporary 30 day suspension of K-12 school contact tracing, effective January 18, 2022, in response to the current surge of cases and pressure that is being placed on the school system. MCHD encourages families that have students in school to regularly monitor your children for symptoms of illness, keep them home if ill and seek medical care and testing. Please continue to notify your children’s school if your child is ill. Two school districts in McPherson County participate in the KDHE Test-to-Stay program and MCHD encourages those programs to continue to function as they have been.

MCPHERSON - McPherson Middle School and Washington Elementary School were on a brief lockdown this morning while police detained someone for a welfare check.

At 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, McPherson police were sent to check on an individual reported to be experiencing a mental health crisis outside McPherson Middle School, the McPherson Police Department noted in a news release on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/McphersonPD">Facebook page</a> early this afternoon.

"For the safety of Middle School and Washington Elementary School students and staff, the schools were put on a soft lock down," the department reported.

The lockdown only lasted 10-15 minutes while officers physically detained the person. A taser was not deployed to subdue the person.

"Unfortunately, false information regarding a taser or tasers being used to subdue the subject is circulating through the rumor mill. Officers did not deploy a taser during this incident," the department noted in the news release.
