Grammy Award winning Patty Griffin is coming to the Stiefel Theatre.

Jane Gates, Stiefel Theatre executive director, announced this morning that Patty Griffin with John Fullbright is scheduled for 8 p.m. May 4 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Tickets start at $45 and go on sale at noon on Friday. Tickets may be be purchased online at <a href="http://stiefeltheatre.org">stiefeltheatre.org</a>. Tickets also are available at the Stiefel box office from noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and by calling 785-827-1998.

Fullbright got his start at the legendary Blue Door listening room in Oklahoma City. It was there that he recorded a live album and found his base, opening for many other writers including fellow Oklahomans Kevin Welch and Jimmy Webb. His 2012 studio debut, From the Ground Up, received a Grammy nomination for Americana Album of the Year, and later that year he won ASCAP’s Harold Adamson Award for lyric writing. Police are looking for two people believed to be involved in a central Salina residential burglary on Monday.

Officers were sent to The Arena, 427 S. Broadway Boulevard, on Monday afternoon for the report of two people who had attempted to sell stolen property, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. While they were enroute, the officers received an update that the two people had fled, were eastbound on Holiday Street, and had discarded some of the property they had with them.

An officer saw two people running between S. Clark Street and Montrose Street and jumping over a fence. One was wearing a gray hoodie and the other a black hoodie. According to Forrester, officers located several items along the subjects' route of travel, including a carton of grape Seneca brand cigars and four Play Station 4 video games, along with some drug paraphernalia.

The owner of The Arena told police that he was exiting his business when he saw the two people, and recognized them as being the same two who had sold him some property a few days before that turned out to be stolen. He told them that he was calling the police and they fled. The driver of the vehicle the two arrived in waited for police to arrive and turned over other property that had been left behind by the two, including a Playstation 4 and controllers, and another pack of cigars.

At approximately 11 p.m. Monday, officers were sent to the 200 block of S. Second Street for the report of a residential burglary. A 24-year-old man from Salina reported that he went to work at approximately 11 a.m. Monday. When he returned, he found things amiss in his residence and his back door open. Although he did not see any damage, the back door no longer closed correctly, Forrester noted.

The man then noticed that his PlayStation 4, several games, and a carton of grape Seneca cigars were missing. Total loss was estimated at $600.

According to Forrester, the items collected from the incident at The Arena were identified as belonging to the man on S. Second Street and were returned to him.

Police find connection between burglary, attempt to sell stolen items

ASSARIA - A Lindsborg woman was injured when her vehicle was rear-ended on Interstate 135 near Assaria Monday evening.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Jayden Norwood, 18, of Salina, was southbound on I-135 near the Assaria exit, when Norwood looked down to pick up a water bottle. When he looked up, his vehicle was quickly bearing down on a 2021 Toyota RAV4 ahead of him. Soldan said that at the time, Norwood was using the car's cruise control and was not able to stop before rear-ending the RAV4.

The accident occurred at 7 p.m. Monday near milepost 82 on I-135.

Anita Neilson, 61, of Lindsborg, the driver of the RAV4, complained of general pain and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center.

Norwood was cited for following too closely, Soldan said.

Lindsborg woman injured in two-vehicle wreck on I-135

Two people were injured when they were ejected from a motorcycle in west-central Salina Monday afternoon.

Robert Truex, 49, of Salina, was northbound in the 200 block of S. Broadway Boulevard on a 2007 Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle when he likely lost consciousness due to a medical emergency, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. A 45-year-old female passenger from Salina, was ejected from the motorcycle. The motorcycle continued on and then Truex was ejected.

According to Forrester, the motorcycle continued on and finally stopped approximately 300 feet north of where Truex began losing control of it.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. Monday.

Both Truex and the female passenger were transported to Salina Regional Health Center by EMS.

As of this morning, Truex was in serious but stable condition with multiple serious head injuries, Forrester reported. Truex was not wearing a helmet.

The passenger sustained minor injuries, he added.

Salina man, woman ejected from motorcycle Monday

The Bennington State Bank (BSB) has announced the promotion of Tobin Sawyers to loan officer. 

Sawyers joined the bank in June of 2021 as a mortgage portfolio manager and is being promoted to loan officer. 

As a mortgage loan officer, Sawyers will be responsible for working with mortgage customers to determine the best loan option, whether they are&nbsp; first-time homebuyers or are refinancing, according to information from Bennington State Bank.&nbsp;

“Tobin’s attention to detail and commitment to customer service have been an incredible asset to BSB and we are excited to announce his promotion to Loan Officer,” said Andy Adams, senior vice president, mortgage loan officer.

“I am grateful to Bennington State Bank for giving me the opportunity to do something I love,” said Sawyers. “I look forward to building long lasting relationships and becoming a trusted advisor to my customers, making sure they meet their goals, while having a smooth and enjoyable mortgage experience.”

Teens who completed a personal finance class in high school would rather put $500 in the bank than buy a smartphone.

You read that right. With personal finance education under their belts, students are three times as likely to choose saving money over buying a cell phone. In an age of texting, Snapchatting and Instagramming—that’s kind of a miracle.

Our team surveyed more than 76,000 high school students from across the nation last year to learn how teens think and feel about money. Here’s what we discovered about high schoolers who completed a personal finance class before graduation:

●They’re confident about handling their money:&nbsp;Students report feeling confident when it comes to budgeting (95%), saving money (94%) and investing (87%).

●They may earn more money than you think:&nbsp;Almost two-thirds said they are working and earning an average of $3,000 per year.

●They’re thinking about ways other than student loans to pay for college:&nbsp;Students said their top college funding sources include scholarships (69%), help from their parents (53%) and personal funding/themselves (51%).

●They understand the pitfalls of student loans:&nbsp;94% of them know how student loans work (a.k.a. they know they must pay them back—with interest).

So, what about the students who didn’t take a personal finance class? The study found they were twice as likely to say they&nbsp;didn’t&nbsp;understand how student loans work.&nbsp;Can you imagine signing up for decades of interest payments before you’re even old enough to rent a car?&nbsp;

ELLIS: Today’s teens may be more money-wise than you think

Today is Tuesday, Feb. 15, the 46th day of 2022. There are 319 days left in the year.

On Feb. 15, 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed a bill allowing female attorneys to argue cases before the Supreme Court. 

In 1764, the site of present-day St. Louis was established by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau. 

In 1898, the U.S. battleship Maine mysteriously blew up in Havana Harbor, killing more than 260 crew members and bringing the United States closer to war with Spain. 

In 1933, President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt escaped an assassination attempt in Miami that mortally wounded Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak; gunman Giuseppe Zangara was executed more than four weeks later. 

In 1944, Allied bombers destroyed the monastery atop Monte Cassino in Italy. 

In 1961, 73 people, including an 18-member U.S. figure skating team en route to the World Championships in Czechoslovakia, were killed in the crash of a Sabena Airlines Boeing 707 in Belgium.

County staff is asking the commissioners to be proactive and approve ahead of time support and matching funding should the City of Salina choose to apply for state funding to help increase housing availability in the community. 

Last week, commissioners heard an update from the City of Salina regarding its efforts to increase housing. The effort could include the city applying for state funding, which could be helped by letters of support from the county and a commitment of up to $1 million of the housing allocation within the county's American Rescue Plan Act funds to be considered as local match for such applications. Stipulations would be put on such support, such as an expiration date, and limits to what the funds could be used for.

Commissioners also are scheduled to look at whether commission district lines need to be redrawn so that all five districts are as equal in population as possible.

Other items on the county commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider renewing the county's Cybersecurity Crowd Strike software.

●Consider a bid award for traffic paint and beads.

●Consider a bid award for pipe culverts and bridge decking.

●Consider appointing Don Merriman to the Twenty-Eight District Judicial Nominating Commission.

●Hear a livestock and expo center update from David Flaherty II, livestock and expo center director.

●Discuss the departmental updates schedule.

Saline County to consider housing support, commission redistricting

Following is the Saline County Health Department COVID-19 update for Monday.

●There have been 17 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Saline County since our last update on Friday.

●Salina Regional Health Center reports that 18 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19.

●There are currently a reported 226 active cases of COVID-19 in Saline County.

As of February 1, all new cases of COVID-19 are being handled by KDHE. UPDATE: Red flag warnings replace fire weather watches

The University of Kansas Medical Center announced this afternoon that Weis has been named the Christine A. Hartley Rural Health Nursing Endowed Professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing-Salina. She also will be the director of research at the newly created Kansas Center for Rural Health. 

Weis was raised on a farm and ranch just outside Salina, KU Medical Center noted in a news release. Weis' family still farms in the area.

“The stars have truly aligned to bring me back to my hometown in Kansas,” Weis said. “It is a joy to work with the KU Medical Center team. I am excited to be home again and help build and sustain accessible, quality health care for all Kansans.”

At the KU School of Nursing-Salina, Weis will "work with groups and individuals in Salina and the surrounding communities to establish rural health-focused research and evidence-based practices. She also will mentor and support students in rural-focused research," KU Medical Center noted.

Last week, KU Medical Center announced the establishment of the Kansas Center for Rural Health. The center is being housed on the Salina campus of the KU schools of medicine and nursing. For that part of her job, Weis will "oversee the center’s research efforts in order to address health disparities in rural parts of the state," according to KU Medical Center.

“We are so pleased to welcome Dr. Karen Weis to our faculty. Nursing research is novel in this area, especially with a nurse researcher of Dr. Weis’ caliber,” said Lisa Larson, dean of the University of Kansas School of Nursing-Salina. “She will no doubt be an invaluable resource and mentor to our students, while also contributing to our goal of innovatively addressing the challenges of enhancing rural health care.” 

Prior to coming to the dual position in Salina, Weis spent six years as a professor and the Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap Endowed Chair in Nursing Research at Incarnate Word University. Prior to that, she was a decorated 29-year veteran of the United States Air Force Nurse Corps, where she held multiple clinical and leadership positions in maternal-child/high-risk obstetrical nursing, KU Medical Center noted. Her primary research interest is in maternal perinatal mental health and its effect on maternal and fetal/infant health.

Nursing research is novel in this area, especially with a nurse researcher of Dr. Weis’ caliber,” said Lisa Larson, dean of the University of Kansas School of Nursing-Salina. “She will no doubt be an invaluable resource and mentor to our students, while also contributing to our goal of innovatively addressing the challenges of enhancing rural health care.” Prior to coming to the dual position in Salina, Weis spent six years as a professor and the Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap Endowed Chair in Nursing Research at Incarnate Word University. Prior to that, she was a decorated 29-year veteran of the United States Air Force Nurse Corps, where she held multiple clinical and leadership positions in maternal-child/high-risk obstetrical nursing, KU Medical Center noted. Her primary research interest is in maternal perinatal mental health and its effect on maternal and fetal/infant health.

ABILENE - Charles "Chuck" and Deanna Munson bid $926,000 during a bankruptcy sale in Abilene on Monday to acquire the former Brookville Hotel restaurant property. 

Pinnacle Bank had put the property up&nbsp; for sale with the Munson's submitting the lone bid. They plan to open a new restaurant called Legacy Kansas, with a subtitle acknowledging both the Brookville Hotel and Munson's Prime.&nbsp;

Charles and Deanna owned the Munson Prime steakhouse in Junction City that was destroyed by fire in February of 2021. They now plan to open the new restaurant with what Deanna termed "the best of both worlds. We will continue the traditional family style served chicken the way it was done at Brookville. " Munson said in at least three of the rooms, there will be a bar with high top tables and the other available rooms will serve menu items including "high-end Munson steaks and also burgers." In that latter area customers will also be able to order a plated Brookville chicken dinner. There are also plans to serve Munson homemade ice cream.

There is work to be done to prepare the facility with the goal of a June 24th, 2022 opening, explained Deanna. "We have a ways to go. First of all it deteriorated in the last year and there are things missing that were there before that are not there now." The work can progress again on remodeling the bar in&nbsp; the building, the ice cream machine has to be remade and a facility must be built to hold that machine.&nbsp;There will need to be some work as well to staff the new restaurant

The original plan called for the restaurant to be open by June 24th, 2021, but back tax issues facing the previous owners of the Brookville Hotel resulted in a delay and eventually concluded with the sale on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Deanna explained how this project fits their dream. "To do something like this, not to own a restaurant, not to have a steakhouse. " She said they want the farm community. "The Legacy Kansas is perfect for what Chuck ,and especially my dream is, for where we leave Munson Farms when we leave this world. We've got the next generation that as far as our management team that probably are as eager to make it we want it to be as we are, and they're young!"

Small quake strikes NE Marion County early Monday morning

HOPE - A minor earthquake struck late Sunday night northeast of Hope.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.0 magnitude quake struck at 11:20 p.m. Sunday. It was centered just south of 800 Avenue between Rain Road and Quail Road.

Minor earthquake strikes northeast of Hope Sunday night

Multiple spent shell casings were located in a northwest Salina neighborhood after a reported shots fire incident early Saturday morning.

Chicago Street at approximately 2:20 a.m. Saturday for the report of shots being fired, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.A witness told police that there was a loud party in the neighborhood and that a neighbor had asked those attending to quiet down. A witness reported seeing three people walking to a red or maroon four-door vehicle that possibly was a Buick. The vehicle was parked facing eastbound. According to the witness, as the vehicle left, one of the persons in it fired several shots into the air.Forrester reported that officers located four spent .45 caliber shell casings in the street. No damage was located in the area, he noted.
