The rib-tickling comedy by Herbert McCollum is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 6-7 in the ballroom of the Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth Street.

Tickets are $8 (non-refundable) and can be purchased at the Senior Center. Seating is limited.

According to information from the Salina Senior Theatre Project, Casserole Casanova centers on Roger, a recent widower, who is visited by five women bearing gifts of food. Fred, Roger’s friend and neighbor, believes that the women are all hot for Roger. While there is competition among the women, it is only about their cooking skills. But Fred convinces Roger otherwise, with hilarious results.

Three of Kansas Wesleyan’s music ensembles will perform in a single concert Tuesday in Sams Chapel. 

The event, featuring the String Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble, begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge.&nbsp;

The String Orchestra, led by Director of Strings Leonardo Rosario, will present a program of all Latin music, featuring pieces by composers such as Joaquin Rodrigo, Salvador Martinez Garcia and Guido Lopez Gavilan.&nbsp;

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Steve Lueth, will swing with two pieces from the jazz standards canon Bags’ Groove by Milt Jackson and Angel Eyes by Matt Dennis, along with New Orleans Jumbo-Gumbo by Mike Carubia.

The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Department Chair James McAllister, will end the concert&nbsp;with a selection of pieces that run the gamut of possibilities for winds. Featured will be Henry Fillmore’s march Americans We; a medley of selections from The Phantom of the Opera&nbsp;by Andrew Lloyd Webber; and Reverberations, a contemporary fanfare by Brian Balmages.

KWU String Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble concert Tuesday

The Saline County Sheriff's Office will join hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country Saturday for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's 22nd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

According to Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski, sheriff's office personnel will be joined by representatives from Interim Healthcare and Hospice for the collection, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth Street.

The bi-annual event offers free, anonymous disposal of unneeded medications.

“Disposing of unneeded medications can help prevent drugs from being misused,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “Overdose deaths continue to hit tragic record highs. I encourage everyone to dispose of unneeded prescription medications now.”

For more than a decade, DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or no longer needed—that too often become a gateway to addiction. Working in close partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 15 million pounds of medication from circulation since its inception. These efforts are directly in line with DEA’s priority to combat the overdose epidemic in the United States.

Drug overdose deaths are up 16 percent in the last year, claiming more than 290 lives every day, the DEA noted.  According to a report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a majority of people who misused a prescription medication obtained the medicine from a family member or friend.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the United States, more than 106,000 people died as the result of a drug overdose in the 12-month period ending November 2021, marking the most drug-related deaths ever recorded, with opioid-related deaths accounting for 75 percent of all overdose deaths.

If you can't make it to the collection event on Saturday, you can drop off unneeded medications in lobby of the sheriff's office during the office's regular business hours. Additionally, you can drop them off on the weekends at the Saline County Jail visitation window.

Lunch & Learn to look at Churchill, Eisenhower

For a number of people, the upcoming Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance concert in Salina may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The performing arts alliance has scheduled a Piano Trio Concert for 7 p.m. April 30 in Christ Cathedral, 138 S. Eighth Street. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting <a href="http://mapaa.org/schedule">mapaa.org/schedule</a>. A reception with the artists will follow the concert.

During the concert, violinist Christina Bouey will perform on a 1728 "Artot" Stradivarius on loan from The Juilliard School. She is scheduled to perform alongside cellist Jesse Henkensiefken and pianist Tatiana Tessman in a program featuring the piano trios of Dmitri Shostakovich and Felix Mendelssohn, as well as Camille Saint-Saëns’ Violin Sonata No. 1.

"The 1728 violin known as 'Artot-Alard,' built by Antonio Stradivari (arguably the most well-known and talented of the Stradivari family) is as beautiful to see as it is to hear. The instrument represents the craftsman at the height of his career. Artot-Alard glows with deep color tones that highlight the graceful curves of the violin," the Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance noted in a news release.

Described by Opera News as playing with “exquisite, quivering beauty,” Christina Bouey is an internationally-renowned violinist and founding member of the Ulysses Quartet. Bouey graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Master of Music Degree and Professional Studies Certificate, studying with Glenn Dicterow, Lisa Kim, Laurie Smukler, and Nicholas Mann. Her Bachelor of Music (Magna cum laude) is from Boston Conservatory, where she studied with Irina Muresanu as a full scholarship student. Ulysses Quartet, currently a Lisa Arnhold Fellow at The Juilliard School, serves as the School’s Graduate Resident String Quartet. Currently, Bouey plays a 1728 “Artot” Stradivarius violin on loan from Juilliard.

A Kansas native, Jesse Henkensiefken performs regularly as a concert cellist and conductor. Tatiana Tessman has performed as a soloist and with orchestras around the world, from Lincoln Center in New York to La Scala in Milan. She has seen overwhelming success on the international competition front, having won multiple prizes across Europe, the U.S., and Latin America. Tessman is a graduate of Moscow Conservatory, where she studied with teachers including Valery Kastelsky, Pavel Nersessian, Nikolai Lugansky, Sergei Dorensky (with whom she pursued her studies as a post-graduate student), and Mstislav Rostropovich. After completing her undergraduate and graduate studies degrees in Russia, Tessman moved to the United States, where she completed her D.M.A. at Manhattan School of Music under the guidance of Solomon Mikowsky as a recipient of the Elda van Gelder Memorial Foundation Scholarship. She has served as artist-in-residence and director of keyboard studies at Kansas Wesleyan University from 2014-2020. "The 1728 violin known as 'Artot-Alard,' built by Antonio Stradivari (arguably the most well-known and talented of the Stradivari family) is as beautiful to see as it is to hear. The instrument represents the craftsman at the height of his career. The City of Salina has announced street crack sealing work for the upcoming week.

Monday through Friday, Circle C Construction of Goddard will seal cracks on the following streets, weather permitting.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $288,000 project is part of the City's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance program.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning for extreme grassland fire danger, which is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. CDT Saturday for the following counties in our area. 

The fire weather watch is no longer in effect.

Winds from the southwest at 25 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, and relative humidity as low as 14 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control, the weather service noted. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

K-State’s Rural Grocery Initiative plans national event focused on strategies for strengthening rural grocery stores&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – Grocery stores are critical to maintaining vibrant, healthy, and thriving communities.&nbsp;Yet, rural grocers face a challenging and ever-changing retail landscape that makes it difficult to stay in business. &nbsp;

That is why the Rural Grocery Initiative, a unit within K-State Research and Extension, is hosting the seventh biennial&nbsp;National Rural Grocery Summit on June 20-21 at the Drury Plaza Broadview Hotel in Wichita. According to organizers, the summit is considered the premier networking and resource-sharing venue for independent grocers and rural food access stakeholders.&nbsp;

“In 2020, the summit was canceled due to COVID-19,” said Rial Carver, program leader for the Rural Grocery Initiative. “We’re incredibly excited for the return of the summit this summer because it will once again provide grocers and other rural stakeholders the opportunity to connect with each other, learn together, and strategize creative rural grocery solutions to take home to their communities."

The National Rural Grocery Summit attracts many rural stakeholders, including&nbsp;store owners, citizen leaders, food suppliers, academic researchers, healthy food access practitioners, policy makers, funders and more.&nbsp;

Carver said topics planned for discussion include&nbsp;rural grocery best practices,&nbsp;innovation in rural food access, funding sources to support grocery stores, nutrition incentive programs and more.&nbsp;

Jenny Osner, co-owner of Hired Man's Grocery and Grill in Conway Springs, has attended every National Rural Grocery Summit since it started in 2008.&nbsp;

“By attending the summit, I look most forward to the people, the stories, the connections. You find others who feel and know the highs and lows of rural grocery and how to how to run a grocery store in a rural community,” Osner said. “And the best part is it doesn't end at the summit. You build a network; you have people, you have resources. So when things come up, you can always fall back on those people that you've met at the summit.”&nbsp;

The National Rural Grocery Summit will feature numerous breakout sessions and keynotes addresses from leaders across the nation. Two keynote speakers have been announced so far:&nbsp;

●RF Buche, CEO and president of GF Buche Co.&nbsp;-- GF Buche Co. was established in 1905 in Lake Andes, South Dakota. Buche, a fourth generation grocer, owns and operates grocery, convenience, fast food, hardware and auto parts stores in 23 locations and 12 communities throughout South Dakota. He will discuss how the company remains competitive in rural markets through innovation.

●Stacy Mitchell, co-executive director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance --&nbsp;&nbsp;The ILSR is a national research and advocacy organization that fights corporate control and works to build thriving, equitable communities. Mitchell founded and directs ILSR’s Independent Business Initiative, which has done pioneering research and reporting on the importance of locally owned businesses and the public policies driving their decline.&nbsp;

CONCORDIA - Cloud County Community College’s Cloud Kicks Jazz Band will present a spring concert on Wednesday.

CONCORDIA - Cloud County Community College’s Cloud Kicks Jazz Band will present a spring concert on Wednesday. The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus and is open to the public at no charge.The concert will feature the Cloud Kicks Jazz Band, an auditioned ensemble made up of both college and community members. The band will perform a number of selections, including C-Jam Blues by Duke Ellington, Blue Skies by Irving Berlin, Fly Me To The Moon by Bart Howard, and Jump, Jive &amp; Wail by Louis Prima.The band is under the direction of Christopher Langsford, instructor in music at Cloud County.
