Over the weekend, a Salina house fire left four international Kansas Wesleyan men's soccer players with next to nothing, destroying most of their belongings.

While the devastation was great, the response from the Salina community has been nothing short of inspiring, and the four players,&nbsp;Mateo Hoyos, Andres Ruiz, Gerardo Garcia, and Sebastian Fernandez, have quickly gotten back on their feet.

“It’s been incredible to see the way this community has come together around these kids, dropping off all sorts of things," KWU men's soccer coach Bruce Palmbaum said. "People have taken them to Dick’s and Wall Mart, Bethany College sent over gift cards, the other coaches and teams have sent us stuff. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

This effort has extended well beyond just the KWU community, with everyone from local businesses, to local high schools, and even rival schools pitching in.

In addition to physical donations made to the players, team, and school, the GoFundMe put online by Hoyos has already raised over $10,000 of its $50,000 goal.

Earlier this year, Hoyos, Ruiz, Garcia and Fernandez helped Kansas Wesleyan earn the Champions of Character Award for their work helping others in the Salina community, work they did with no notion of how much they might one day need from the very community they chose to serve.

“I’m sure that KWUs position in the community has had a lot to do with this response," Palmbaum said. "Our team, and these kids in particular, have done a lot of work in the Salina community, and I think people really grew to like those boys before this ever happened.”

Salina community rallies around four KWU MSOC players victimized by house fire

McPherson Fire Department Press Release

Just before 4 p.m., the McPherson Fire Department was dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at a commercial building in the 1000 block of West Kansas Avenue.

Responding crews found a commercial building with smoke coming from the building. Fire crews made entry and found heavy smoke conditions in the building. Crews found the engine compartment on a forklift on fire.

The sprinkler system in the building had activated and the fire was contained to the forklift. While searching for the fire within the building, two firefighters fell into a partially uncovered pit used for automotive repairs. One of the firefighters was assisted from the building and was transported by McPherson EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of a lower leg injury. The firefighter was treated and released but will need follow-up care for the injury.

After extinguishing the fire, the smoke was cleared from the building. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to assist with the fire investigation.

McPherson Fire had 4 apparatus and nine personnel on scene. In addition to McPherson EMS, McPherson PD, McPherson BPU and Kansas Gas Service assisted at the scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Area Technical College Salina Area Technical College received a $600,000 grant from the Patterson Family Foundation, which is based in Kansas City, Missouri.

The legacy of Neal and Jeanne Patterson is carried forward through the Foundation’s mission of “Working together to help rural communities thrive.” The Foundation’s philanthropic reach spans 119 counties across Kansas and western Missouri with populations of 50,000 or less. Salina Tech’s service area includes five counties within the Patterson Family Foundation’s catchment area.

Salina Tech President Greg Nichols is pleased with the opportunities this will bring to fortify rural Kansas.

“Salina Tech has reached out to all of our service area and further into rural Kansas,” Nichols said. “We have built partnerships with schools to bring technical and general education to their community, and we provide it here on campus.”

“One of the most enjoyable parts of higher education is seeing how people come together,” Nichols said. “We see people who compete in their high school activities, then come on campus and collaborate to learn.”

Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs Jennifer Callis noted enrollment trends in rural Kansas in a recent presentation to the Board of Trustees. 

“We are reaching more than just Saline County,” Callis said. “Many students from all over the state are coming to Salina Tech.”

Over the past five years, Salina Tech’s rural enrollment has exceeded 500 students.

“The numbers show technical education is thriving,” Nichols said. “More importantly, our enrollment increases have come from younger demographics.”

Salina Area Technical College showed an increased enrollment of 43.4% over a five-year period for students less than 18 years old. Similar increases occurred for ages 18-19 and 20 – 24, with 30.5% and 55.2%, respectively.

“We are so pleased that the Patterson Family Foundation chose to support the important work done by so many here at Salina Tech,” Nichols said. “They are helping in so many programs.”

Salina Tech receives $600K grant supporting rural Kansans

This Thanksgiving Holiday, make sure to buckle up, Kansans. If you don’t make occupant protection a habit now start a new tradition.

Beginning November 21 through November 30 the Salina Police Department (SPD) will join many other law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, in the Kansas THANKGIVING SAFE ARRIVAL traffic enforcement campaign. 

Although all Kansas Traffic Laws will be enforced, this extra provision will be actively enforcing our occupant protection laws. SPD will also provide education that serves as a reminder that BUCKLING UP SAVES LIVES.

Don’t be a turkey, buckle up, every trip, every time. It’s your best defense in case of crash. Do it, if not for you, do it for them.

In the heartland of America, Kansas veterans are engaged in a relentless battle—a war that rages within their own minds. As we approach Veterans Day, it's vital&nbsp;to shine a spotlight on the mental health challenges that our country's defenders are grappling with.

According to The National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics, approximately 195,000 Veterans call Kansas home. While the mental health crisis among veterans is not unique to Kansas, it is acutely felt in this Midwestern state. According to recent surveys, a staggering 91% of injured post-9/11 veterans live with severe mental health conditions [1]. This statistic is more than just a number; it represents thousands of Kansas veterans struggling with invisible wounds that impact their daily lives and those of their families.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a pervasive and significant mental health issue that plagues many veterans, not just in Kansas but across the nation. Approximately one in five veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan in Kansas battle with PTSD or major depression [1]. This condition can manifest in a myriad of ways, from haunting nightmares and constant vigilance to difficulties in maintaining relationships and employment.

Depression and Anxiety: The Unseen Battle

Depression and anxiety often go hand-in-hand with PTSD. These conditions can be debilitating, affecting every aspect of a veteran's life. The isolation and stress brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic have only exacerbated these issues, with both veterans and non-veterans reporting a higher prevalence of mental health problems during this time [2].

Substance Abuse: A Dangerous Coping Mechanism

Many veterans turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with their mental health challenges. This self-medication can lead to substance abuse disorders, creating a vicious cycle that's difficult to break without professional help.

Perhaps the most alarming statistic is the suicide rate among veterans. Nationally, veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than non-veterans. In Kansas, this translates to a significant number of lives lost each year, leaving families and communities devastated.

Despite the severity of these mental health challenges, many Kansas veterans face significant barriers to accessing care:

Stigma: There's still a pervasive stigma surrounding mental health in military culture, which can prevent veterans from seeking help.

Access: Rural veterans in Kansas may have limited access to mental health services, with long travel times to VA facilities.. Wait Times: Even when services are available, long wait times can discourage veterans from getting the timely care they need.

Lack of Awareness: Many veterans may not be aware of the mental health services available to them through the VA and other organizations.

The Salina VA outpatient clinic,1410 East Iron Avenue, Salina, KS 67401 offers primary care to help veterans. All VA healthcare facilities offer same-day help. The Salina VA will provide consultation, evaluation, and treatment for a range of issues that may impact a veteran's mental health or emotional well-being. Their confidential outpatient services include individual and group therapy for:

Psychiatric disorders such as depression Marriage and relationship problems Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Anxiety, addictive behaviors, and personality disorders Aggressive or self-harming behaviors

While progress has been made, there's still much work to be done to address the mental health needs of Kansas veterans. Critical areas for improvement include:

Reducing Stigma: Continued efforts to normalize mental health discussions within military and veteran communities are not just essential, they are a shared responsibility. By committing to these efforts, we can create a more supportive and understanding environment for our veterans.

Expanding Services: The key to reducing wait times and improving access lies in increasing the number of mental health professionals who are specifically trained to cater to the unique needs of veterans. This could be a game-changer in the battle against mental health issues among Kansas veterans.

Research and Innovation: Ongoing research into effective treatments for PTSD and other mental health conditions affecting veterans is crucial.

As we honor our veterans this November, remember that their service doesn't end when they return home. The battle for mental health is ongoing and requires the support of the entire community. RICO: The mental health crisis on the home front

There are no foot pursuits today—just a “hoof pursuit” in western Saline County, according to a social media report from Trooper Ben Gardner.

"Some cows broke through a fence and were heading toward the interstate, but we’re mooooving right along with them to keep everyone safe," Trooper Ben said.&nbsp;

"It’s illegal to walk along the interstate as a pedestrian—and that rule applies to cows too. You never know what you’ll run into on Kansas roads—sometimes it’s not fast drivers, but fast cows," Trooper Ben said.&nbsp;

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary and vehicle theft at a residence in the 4900 block of East North Street. The theft occurred between 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday while the homeowners were at work.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, the homeowner left for work at 7 a.m. but realized at 12:30 p.m. that the house alarm system had not been set. Although the house was unlocked, she activated the alarm remotely using her phone.

"When she came home after work, she came into the house and saw some muddy footprints in the kitchen. Then she walked around the bedroom and saw some shoes that were disturbed," Soldan said. "The only thing they can see missing from the house is a Walther PP .22 pistol valued at $300."

The homeowner also reported the theft of a white 1991 Jeep Renegade with a black top, valued at $5,000, from the shed.

Soldan said the burglary and vehicle theft may be connected to a Salina Police Department (SPD) pursuit the previous night. 

Soldan said the pursuit ended with a suspect abandoning a vehicle about a quarter mile from the residence where the Jeep Renegade was stolen. Soldan said it is possible that the suspect took shelter in the area before burglarizing the residence.&nbsp;

SPD Cpt. James Feldman said the pursuit began at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday when an officer attempted to stop a white 2005 Nissan Maxima for speeding in the 400 block of North Santa Fe.

"The vehicle fled eastbound on East North Street, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph and running multiple stop signs," Feldman said. "The pursuit continued into the county."

After the suspect pulled into a driveway in the 700 block of North Cunningham, he left the vehicle.&nbsp;The driver fled on foot and was not located. 

According to Feldman, a 28-year-old female from Salina, who was a passenger in the Nissan, remained in the vehicle and was not charged with any crimes.&nbsp;

Sheriff Soldan noted that the pursuit ended about a quarter mile from the residence where the burglary occurred. It is possible the suspect took shelter in the area before committing the crime.

Feldman said a possible suspect has been identified, but no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

UPDATED: SPD releases details of vehicle pursuit possibly linked to Saline Co. burglary

K-State Technology Development Institute

Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.k-state.edu/tdi">Technology Development Institute</a>&nbsp;provided design and prototyping assistance to Vortex Coatings to help bring a new applicator to the market just in time to display at the world's largest automotive tradeshow.

Vortex Coatings is a Salina-based company that produces high-performance coatings for a wide range of industrial, agricultural and automotive industry applications, including coatings for truck bed liners to protect the inside of the bed and prevent objects from sliding around. Vortex sells the coating materials and the equipment used to apply the coatings.

When the company was acquired and moved to Salina, the original equipment design was also transferred. As the new owners began talking with their dealer network, they began identifying several areas of improvement on the applicator design for a simpler and more user-friendly process for those applying the coatings.

The Vortex team reached out to the Technology Development Institute at K-State to determine if the engineering staff would be able to assist them with developing new ideas to help improve the functionality of the application system.

"The team at K-State has been great to work with from our initial contact with them, said Peter Browning, general manager of Vortex Coatings. "They made the trip over to Salina to look at our operation and equipment and took the time to understand what we were trying to accomplish and the timeline that we were up against. We were able to engage engineering students to help with our virtual modeling, and then TDI was able to produce prototypes for testing and sales displays on-site in a very timely manner. Working with them has been a great experience for our organization."

The new applicator design was completed and tested just in time for Vortex to take the prototypes to the world's largest automotive tradeshow — SEMA in Las Vegas — to feature as a new product introduction for the company. The new applicators are much more ergonomic and allow material to flow and spray better than the previous systems.

This project was completed in support of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/">K-State 105</a>&nbsp;initiative, Kansas State University's answer to the call for comprehensive economic growth and advancement solutions for Kansas.

The K-State Technology Development Institute in the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://engg.k-state.edu/">Carl R. Ice College of Engineering</a>&nbsp;is a U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration University Center and received a grant from the Research and Entrepreneurship Federal Matching Grant Dollars Fund.

TDI provides a broad range of engineering and business development services to both private industry and university researchers to advance the commercial readiness of new products or technologies.

K-State helps Vortex Coatings develop new applicator

A fierce desire to know how things work pushed Dinah Roth towards a career in mechanics and an exciting encounter with aviation sealed her budding career.

“I love taking things apart, figuring out how they work, and putting them back together,” said the 22-year-old from Ottawa County.

“I got interested in planes at 15,” Roth said.

Now working as an apprentice at 1 Vision Aviation at Salina Regional Airport, her sights are on aviation, specifically becoming certified and working as an airframe and power plant mechanic.

“It’s been a dream of mine for a while, and now I’m living it,” Roth said. “Every day is a new adventure.”

Her journey began Jan. 29 as one of nine students in the inaugural Aviation Innovation and Maintenance pre-apprenticeship program — AIM for short.

Upon graduation March 7, when Roth and eight others received their micro-credentials, she and four classmates joined the 1 Vision program, the next step to A&amp;P status, or other levels, including aircraft painting.

Through this year, AIM, a Salina Airport Authority program, has sent four cohorts — 22 students total, 21 of whom graduated — through the six-week course. The fifth cohort began Oct. 28. It is the first class to be based in the new AIM Center in Hangar 626.

“It’s going very well,” said Shelli Swanson, the SAA’s director of administration and finance.

“We stood up this program very swiftly and were fortunate to get the $3.325 million ALOFT Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce,” she said.

ALOFT stands for Advanced Learning Opportunities for Training.

“That (grant) has allowed us to procure the necessary equipment, hire instructors, develop the curriculum and the marketing program,” Swanson said. “The main challenge is raising awareness about the program and educating potential students on the opportunities it offers.”

AIM “started off great,” said Jim Sponder, CEO of 1Vision Aviation, a maintenance, repair and overhaul firm at Salina, that also provides aircraft painting services.

The company operates in the 130,000-square-foot Hangar 959, a.k.a. Big Bertha, at Salina Regional Airport and Airport Industrial Center, and does aircraft painting in Hangar 606. The company also has a division in a 32,000 square foot hangar at Sioux City, Iowa’s Gateway Airport.

Interest in 1 Vision services in Salina was high from its ribbon cutting in September 2019 and has continued to expand. The Salina roster contains roughly 250 workers, and needs to grow fast.

“I could take 100 people today. We need A&amp;P’s and painters,” Sponder said. “The demand’s skyrocketing.”

Joining the industry is easy, Swanson said.

“You don’t have to have any aviation-related experience, or know a fuselage from a cockpit,” she said. “(AIM) is allowing students to experience a trade that is off their radar.”

The airport authority, and partners, such as Kansas State University at Salina, the Salina Community Economic Development Organization, and the chamber, are including more than one demographic and age group in their search for workers.

“We’re also pursuing as potential students, those transitioning from military to civilian life, targeting the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley,” Swanson said.

Thanks to the ALOFT grant, and tuition assistance from the Skill Bridge program for transitioning military, help from Kansas Workforce One, a state employment agency covering 62 counties, the cost has been held down to $200 per student. They are also gifted with a set of tools necessary for the first level of certification each student seeks — among them A&amp;P Mechanics, Aviation Maintenance Technicians, and aircraft paint preppers.

“We are working behind the scenes to secure additional funding from state grants and private scholarships,” she said.

Scott Thomas, an A&amp;P, and the former head of the 1 Vision painting division, praised the AIM program.

“It’s a way to have a career without having to go into debt,” he said.

While family issues have forced Thomas to move closer to home in Mississippi, he pledged “to promote the AIM program wherever I’m at.”

The AIM course first teaches basic aviation maintenance vocabulary, then sheet metal and composition, avionics/electronics, and aircraft coatings, a.k.a. paint.

“The last week is industry week, where we take students up and down the flight line,” Swanson said.

They will visit 1Vision, Schilling Aviation Services, K-State-Salina’s A&amp;P program, and Garmin International.

“All of those are future employers or higher learning institutions,” she said. “Their last day is graduation, where they receive their K-State-Salina micro-credentials.”

These days, Dinah Roth works in 1 Vision’s Avionics Department, learning more about aircraft maintenance every day.

“The 1 Vision mechanics in class gave me a step up. They were my mentors,” she said. “AIM gave me those contacts. A lot of things I didn’t really know about, made we want to work in it, giving me a deeper curiosity.”

Roth will remain an apprentice until she receives her airframe license in 13 to 14 months.

“I will take all my training records to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration),” she said.

Officials will determine if Roth is ready to test for her airframe certificate, and then her power plant certification. She also has the option of finishing her training in college.

“There is a closeness there. I’m very happy to be part of the club,” Roth said. “I’ve never done this before, but I’m getting the textbook and the helping hands from experienced workers at the same time.”

 </figure>“It’s been a dream of mine for a while, and now I’m living it,” Roth said. “Every day is a new adventure.”Her journey began Jan. 29 as one of nine students in the inaugural Aviation Innovation and Maintenance pre-apprenticeship program — AIM for short.Upon graduation March 7, when Roth and eight others received their micro-credentials, she and four classmates joined the 1 Vision program, the next step to A&amp;P status, or other levels, including aircraft painting.Through this year, AIM, a Salina Airport Authority program, has sent four cohorts — 22 students total, 21 of whom graduated — through the six-week course. The fifth cohort began Oct. 28. It is the first class to be based in the new AIM Center in Hangar 626.“It’s going very well,” said Shelli Swanson, the SAA’s director of administration and finance.“We stood up this program very swiftly and were fortunate to get the $3.325 million ALOFT Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce,” she said.ALOFT stands for Advanced Learning Opportunities for Training.“That (grant) has allowed us to procure the necessary equipment, hire instructors, develop the curriculum and the marketing program,” Swanson said. “The main challenge is raising awareness about the program and educating potential students on the opportunities it offers.”AIM “started off great,” said Jim Sponder, CEO of 1Vision Aviation, a maintenance, repair and overhaul firm at Salina, that also provides aircraft painting services.The company operates in the 130,000-square-foot Hangar 959, a.k.a. Big Bertha, at Salina Regional Airport and Airport Industrial Center, and does aircraft painting in Hangar 606. The company also has a division in a 32,000 square foot hangar at Sioux City, Iowa’s Gateway Airport.Interest in 1 Vision services in Salina was high from its ribbon cutting in September 2019 and has continued to expand. The Salina roster contains roughly 250 workers, and needs to grow fast.“I could take 100 people today. We need A&amp;P’s and painters,” Sponder said. “The demand’s skyrocketing.”Joining the industry is easy, Swanson said.“You don’t have to have any aviation-related experience, or know a fuselage from a cockpit,” she said. “(AIM) is allowing students to experience a trade that is off their radar.”The airport authority, and partners, such as Kansas State University at Salina, the Salina Community Economic Development Organization, and the chamber, are including more than one demographic and age group in their search for workers.“We’re also pursuing as potential students, those transitioning from military to civilian life, targeting the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley,” Swanson said.Thanks to the ALOFT grant, and tuition assistance from the Skill Bridge program for transitioning military, help from Kansas Workforce One, a state employment agency covering 62 counties, the cost has been held down to $200 per student. They are also gifted with a set of tools necessary for the first level of certification each student seeks — among them A&amp;P Mechanics, Aviation Maintenance Technicians, and aircraft paint preppers.“We are working behind the scenes to secure additional funding from state grants and private scholarships,” she said.Scott Thomas, an A&amp;P, and the former head of the 1 Vision painting division, praised the AIM program.“It’s a way to have a career without having to go into debt,” he said.While family issues have forced Thomas to move closer to home in Mississippi, he pledged “to promote the AIM program wherever I’m at.”The AIM course first teaches basic aviation maintenance vocabulary, then sheet metal and composition, avionics/electronics, and aircraft coatings, a.k.a. paint.“The last week is industry week, where we take students up and down the flight line,” Swanson said.They will visit 1Vision, Schilling Aviation Services, K-State-Salina’s A&amp;P program, and Garmin International.“All of those are future employers or higher learning institutions,” she said. “Their last day is graduation, where they receive their K-State-Salina micro-credentials.”These days, Dinah Roth works in 1 Vision’s Avionics Department, learning more about aircraft maintenance every day.“The 1 Vision mechanics in class gave me a step up. They were my mentors,” she said. “AIM gave me those contacts. A lot of things I didn’t really know about, made we want to work in it, giving me a deeper curiosity.”Roth will remain an apprentice until she receives her airframe license in 13 to 14 months.“I will take all my training records to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration),” she said.Officials will determine if Roth is ready to test for her airframe certificate, and then her power plant certification. She also has the option of finishing her training in college.“There is a closeness there. I’m very happy to be part of the club,” Roth said. “I’ve never done this before, but I’m getting the textbook and the helping hands from experienced workers at the same time.”

Vibrant, the mental health company that administers Kansas’ 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, reported a one-day call record of 169 calls on Nov. 6, said ​​Cara Sloan-Ramos, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

The largest increases in call volumes occurred on the LGBTQ+ and Spanish lines, Sloan-Ramos said.

President-elect Donald Trump has promised upon taking office a crackdown on immigration, especially undocumented Mexican and Latin and Central American immigrants, through mass deportation. Plus, GOP gains in the Kansas Legislature open up&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/02/anti-lgbtq-bills-introduced-in-kansas-legislature-are-political-bullying-tactic-activists-say/">new opportunities</a>&nbsp;for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

“One of the things we know about suicide and suicidal behavior is that it is rarely connected to one circumstance but instead is most often a result of multiple factors, so correlation doesn’t exactly indicate causation,” Sloan-Ramos said in an email.

The statewide hotline received an average of 67 calls per day in November 2023 and about 53 calls daily in November 2022, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.khi.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/988-Broad-State-Metrics-Report__KS_NA_to_2024-02-29.pdf" target="_blank">da</a><a href="https://www.khi.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/988-Broad-State-Metrics-Report__KS_2022-01-01_to_2023-01-31.pdf" target="_blank">ta</a>&nbsp;from Vibrant.

The LGBTQ+ line, which launched in July 2023, received an average of six calls per day in its first eight months of operation. Average call volumes on the Spanish-speaking line are even lower, at about one call per day, according to 2023 metrics.

Vibrant offers tips for coping with election stress on its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vibrant.org/coping-with-election-stress/" target="_blank">website</a>.

Kansas suicide and crisis hotline sees post-election spike

Tomorrow, Nov. 15 marks the height of the Midwest fall breeding season for deer and vehicle-deer collisions are expected to increase on Kansas roadways. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA), and AAA Kansas are offering safety tips to help drivers navigate these risks and know what to do in case of a collision.

“With the breeding season here and as last year’s offspring begin to establish new home ranges, we expect a significant increase in deer movement,” said Jessica Ward, KDWP Communications Manager. “During the rut, Kansans should remain vigilant, especially during dusk and dawn when deer are more likely to be found on or near roadways.”

Although most vehicle-deer collisions do not result in serious injuries, KDOT data from 2023 shows that seven people were killed, and 658 were injured in such incidents across the state. In Saline County alone, there were 165 deer-related vehicle accidents in 2023.

“If a deer enters the roadway in front of your vehicle, it’s safest to hit the animal rather than swerve to avoid it,” said KHP Captain Candice Breshears. “Swerving can lead to more dangerous situations, including losing control, leaving the road, or veering into oncoming traffic.”

To stay safe on the roads, drivers are urged to be extra alert at dawn and dusk when deer are most active. If you see one deer, expect others, as they often travel in groups. Reduce speed and be vigilant near wooded areas, parks, golf courses, and water sources. Deer crossing signs indicate areas with high rates of vehicle-deer collisions, so extra caution is advised in those areas.

It is important not to swerve to avoid hitting a deer, as that can result in a more serious crash, potentially involving other vehicles or objects off the road.

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure children are in appropriate safety seats. Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic, and scan for the reflective eyes of deer along the roadway.

If a collision occurs, move your vehicle to the shoulder and call law enforcement. For KHP, dial *47, for KTA dial *KTA, or call 911. Stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened, as this provides better protection in the event of a secondary collision.

Shawn Steward, public and government affairs manager for AAA Kansas, emphasized the financial impact of a deer collision. 

“Not only can a collision cause inconvenience while your vehicle is being repaired, but without comprehensive auto insurance, the repair costs could put a serious dent in your wallet," Steward said.&nbsp;

In 2023, the average claim for an animal strike in Kansas was $8,287, a 19% increase from the previous year. The rising cost is attributed to new vehicle technologies, such as cameras and sensors, that drive up repair expenses.

Drivers are reminded to report any collision resulting in $1,000 or more in property damage or personal injury to the nearest law enforcement agency. To remove a deer carcass from the scene, a salvage tag must be obtained from KDWP game wardens, sheriff’s deputies, or KHP troopers.

As fall approaches, staying alert, slowing down, and eliminating distractions while driving can help reduce the risk of deer-related accidents and keep motorists safe.
