ABILENE - The Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) has announced of receiving a $25,000 grant for the Iron Horse Trail.
According to ACVB, the grant from the Sunflower Foundation through its Paving the Way – From Blazing Trails to Building Community grant and education program.
This grant supports Kansas communities at various stages of public-access trail development with customized planning support, technical assistance and peer learning opportunities.
ACVB was one of 25 communities to receive a Sunflower Foundation trail grant, and one of seven communities awarded a Trail Town grant, which supports communities interested in becoming Certified Kansas Trail Towns.
The Trail Town model is a strategy that embraces trails as community development resources and economic drivers.
“The ACVB, in partnership with the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad and the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, plans to construct permanent restroom facilities along the five-mile Iron Horse Trail that connects Abilene and Enterprise,” said Julie Roller Weeks, ACVB Director. “Trail and visitor amenity improvements like this help strengthen the visitor experience and are one of the reasons Abilene continues to be recognized as one of the best small towns to visit.”
The City of Lindsborg received $25,000 in Trail Town grants as well.
