The music of Led Zeppelin is coming to the Stiefel Theatre stage in October.

Get The Led Out is scheduled for 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Tickets start at $39 and go on sale at noon Friday. Purchase tickets online at <a href="http://stiefeltheatre.org">stiefeltheatre.org</a> or by calling the Stiefel at 785-827-1998. The Stiefel box office is open from noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday for phone or walk-up sales.

About the performance from the Stiefel Theatre

From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. 

The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live, like you’ve never heard before. Utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory. When you hear three guitars on the album, GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants: a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity.

A local man is out a laptop computer after it went missing from his room at a south Salina hotel.

The 46-year-old Salina man told police that he left his room at the Rodeway Inn, 3932 S. Ninth Street, at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday. When he returned about 8 p.m., he noticed that the nightstand drawer was open and that his Dell Latitude 5580 laptop was missing from a computer bag on the sofa, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Forrester said there were no signs of forced entry.

Police investigating burglary at south Salina motel

The Salina Police Department Thursday afternoon identified the man whose body was found in the backyard of a residence in the 900 block of W. South Street on July 8. 

On Tuesday, police were able to confirm that the body found was that of Adam Noe Guzman, 29, of Salina, the department noted in a news release issued this afternoon.

An autopsy was conducted on July 11 "and no signs of trauma were located during the examination," the department noted.

"The cause of death is still pending toxicology results and the final report by the medical examiner. No foul play is suspected at this time," the department reported.

HAYS - Businesses and organizations in northwest Kansas can now apply for a spring or summer 2023 intern from Fort Hays State University through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship program.

A Dane G. Hansen Foundation grant made 25 paid internships possible for next spring and summer. Applications from employers will be accepted through Sept. 16.

Eligible employers must be located in the Hansen Foundation’s 26-county service area: the block of counties stretching from the Cheyenne-Wallace County area east to include the Republic-Saline County area, including Ellsworth County. However, students do not have to be from the northwest Kansas area to apply.

A participating employer invests $500 toward the student intern’s wages, and the Hansen Foundation grant provides the remaining funding. Each internship is for one semester or summer. Spring interns will work 240 hours, and summer interns will work 300 hours.

“We’re grateful for the Dane G. Hansen Foundation’s continued support of this program,” said Lisa Karlin, internship career advisor. “It provides employers access to new talent and allows students to gain professional work experience through internships.”

Interested employers should go to the Career Services page on the FHSU website at <a href="http://fhsu.edu/career/employers/hansen-internship-program">fhsu.edu/career/employers/hansen-internship-program</a> to learn more about the program and complete the application. The employer must also provide a detailed job description for the internship.

Local, area bodies of water under blue-green algae advisories

MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis area residents awoke to more than a rain-washed landscape Thursday morning.

A storm that blew through the area at approximately 4:40 a.m. Thursday brought with it destructive winds estimated to be in the 70-80 mph range, Kris Craven, meteorologist-in-charge of the National Weather Service office in Topeka, told Salina Post. 

The area had been put under a severe thunderstorm warning at 4:25 a.m.

"The storm moved through the Minneapolis area around 4:40 a.m., and caused a swath of tree, power line, and roof damage from around Second Street north to around 10th Street," Craven said.

Additionally, the storm dumped quite a bit of rain on Ottawa County. Rainfall totals within the county ranged from 1.42 inched reported 3.6 miles east-northeast of Culver to 2.55 inches 0.4 of a mile northeast of Minneapolis, according to 24-hour rainfall information from the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail &amp; Snow Network.

A Saline County roofer and his business have been temporarily banned from performing roofing services in Kansas and ordered to pay $40,000 in penalties after being found in violation of consumer protection laws, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.

AG: Saline County man, company temporarily banned, fined

A dispute over a bicycle resulted in an injury to one Salina man and the arrest of another late Wednesday afternoon.

A 62-year-old Salina man told police that he had been confronted by a known acquaintance concerning a bicycle. The acquaintance, identified as Marcus E. Vinyard, Jr., accused the man of taking the bicycle from him, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

Vinyard allegedly struck the man with the handle of a machete, causing an injury to the man's head.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of S. College Avenue.

After a search of the area, the bicycle and Vinyard were located at the residence of another acquaintance, Hanus said.

Vinyard was arrested on the following requested charges, Hanus said.

Salina man arrested after dispute about bicycle

A Bennington couple sustained minor injuries when their SUV was rear-ended in a hit-and-run collision north of Salina late Wednesday morning.

A 2016 Jeep Patriot driven by a 69-year-old Bennington woman was northbound on Kansas Highway 143 near Watkins Road when it was rear-ended by a dark color dually pickup pulling a car trailer with a car on it, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The impact forced the SUV to spin into the ditch and across Watkins Road before coming to rest, Melander said. The SUV was towed from the scene.

The driver of the SUV and her passenger, a 69-year-old Bennington man, as well as witness all told deputies that the pickup was driving too fast and was not able to drive around the Jeep because of oncoming traffic.

After the collision, the pickup continued northbound on K-143.

This summer, K-State Salina has embarked on assisting the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unitedwaysalina.org/" target="_blank">Salina Area United Way</a>&nbsp;in its "Building Bridges" campaign, an effort to engage and strengthen the Salina community through health, education and financial stability. With that goal in mind, K-State Salina created a creative fundraising campaign called "You've Been Bot." The campaign was a play on one of K-State Salina's degree options, robotics and automation engineering technology, or "being BOT." When a community member was "BOT," several of K-State Salina's paper robots secretly appeared on their work desk to encourage the person who was "BOT" to donate to the Salina Area United Way. That person would then pick another community leader to be "BOT." Sixteen community leaders, including some K-State Salina employees, took part in the "You've Been BOT" campaign and raised funds for the Salina Area United Way, money that was then put back into Salina area community programs. “When I first started quilting, I thought ‘That’s what my grandma does,’” Carol Keeler said. “I have found that they have contemporary fabric and contemporary patterns, and that is what interests most quilters.”

Keeler, a member of the Silver Needles Quilting Guild, invites community members to view demonstrations and participate in a design build during the 2022 Tri-Rivers Fair. Silver Needles Quilting Guild members will be on-site from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 4-5 in Kenwood Hall, during the Tri-Rivers Fair.

“Members of the Silver Needles Quilting Guild will bring things and work as they go, and answer questions,” Keeler said. “It think it will be fun to sit and watch what they do.”

According to Keeler, a participatory project will extend throughout the two days of demonstrations during the Tri-Rivers Fair.

“What we are going to do is have a design wall,” Keeler said. “A piece of flannel will be placed on the board, so participants can put pieces on the board and arrange them.”

The design will follow the pattern parameters of the Drunkard’s Path pattern.

“If you try to make one, you’ll know why they call it Drunkard’s Path,” Keeler said. “If you put all four pieces together, you have a square and a circle in the center.”

Demonstrations are scheduled with hand work demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4; hand quilting demonstrations from 3-7 p.m. Aug. 4 and how to use different types of rulers from 3-7 p.m. Aug. 4.

On Aug. 5, the demonstrations swap times of the day, with hand quilting in the morning from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and hand work in the afternoon from 3-7 p.m.

“Hand quilting is quilting the entire quilt by hand, using small stitches,” Keeler said. “If a quilter is taking their quilt to a professional and having it quilted by a machine, this will be a demonstration of doing it by hand.”

According to Keeler, hand work includes quilting skills like binding and appliqué.

The Silver Needles Quilting Guild is also wanting to engage fairgoers by hiding quilted hearts around the fairgrounds for people to find.

“There’s a really cool thing that we put on each quilted heart, I Found a Quilted Heart #ifaqh,” Keeler said. “It’s all over the world that they are doing this hashtag. Hopefully, people will enjoy going to that hashtag and learning a little something about it.”

Keeler has made several of the quilted hearts herself, which she also hopes to give away to kids who attend the Silver Needles Quilting Guild presentations, as well as, other interested attendees.

“I’d like to pass them out to people who are interested in the quilt guild, and those that spend some time with us during the fair,” Keeler said. “We’d like two give them a gift for their time and interest.”

The Silver Needles Quilting Guild has existed for 42 years, according to Keeler.

“It was just a group of women that really enjoyed quilting, being together and sharing their talents,” Keeler said.

The group meets twice a month. On the third Monday of each month, the Silver Needles Quilting Guild meets for a meeting, which includes reports, a show and share time where members can share sewing projects they have been working on and a program. The group meets for refreshments at 6:30 p.m., starting their meeting at 7 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church.

“The programs can be quite interesting,” Keeler said. “The last one was things you can get at a hardware store to help with quilting.”

Three days later, on the third Thursday of each month, the group meets again for a sew day at Redeemer Lutheran Church. The church is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and members can come and go as they please, and stay as long as they want.

“There’s so much talent and so much help for each of us to learn more things,” Keeler said.

The group sometimes using their sewing time to work on community service projects. According to Keeler, in 2022 the Silver Needles Quilting Guild has donated quilts to the Martin Luther King, Jr. daycare, Reflections Retirement Resort, The Pregnancy Center, Tammy Walker Cancer Center and the pediatric unit and nursery at Salina Regional Health Center.

“For cancer patients at Tammy Walker we make ‘Quilts with a Hug,’” Keeler said. “It’s a shawl they can wrap around them while they are having their chemo.”

In addition, the Silver Needles Quilting Guild has donated 122 quilted hearts to Presbyterian Manor for the Hearts of Hope project, and 250 placements to Meals on Wheels.

A community outreach program allowed the Silver Needles Quilting Guild to donate funds to Saline County 4-H and the Peacemakers. The funds are made during a fundraiser, this year scheduled for Oct. 14 and 15 at Redeemer Lutheran, which includes a quilt show, auction and a luncheon.

Literature about the Silver Needles Quilting Guild, as well as a coloring sheet for children visiting the presentations during the Tri-Rivers Fair, will be available for demonstration attendees.

“Since March, we have had a lot of younger quilters joining,” Keeler said. “It’s very encouraging. “We noticed there were some young people last year with entries at the Tri-Rivers Fair, and we want to encourage them and keep them quilting.”
