The City of Salina's Zero Waste Initiative and Waste Sort Project are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. The waste sort was conducted March 21-25 and included 50 waste samples, according to information in the commission meeting packet. Thirty-seven of the samples were from residential haulers (15 from city routes and 22 from non-city haulers), while 13 were from commercial and institutional haulers.

As for the makeup of recyclables, 54 cubic yards of recyclables collected at the Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center from the first 75 customers over a three-day period were sorted.

The Waste Sort and Recyclables Composition Study was made possible by grant funding from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Results of waste, recyclables study on Salina commission agenda

Poets Linda Lewis, Jason Ryberg, Linzi Garcia, Tim Tarkelly, and Jase Buck will read from their latest collections during an event Aug. 7 in downtown Salina.

The readings are scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue. The event is open to the public at no charge.

Following is information about the poets from the event organizers.

Linda M. Lewis Following an Oklahoma girlhood and a high school teaching career in Nebraska, Linda M. Lewis makes her home in Lindsborg, where she settled in 1987 to become a professor of composition and British literature at Bethany College. Now retired, she indulges in family time, sleeping late, leisurely lunches, fika with friends, reading poetry, and poetry readings. As professor and literary scholar, she published four books and a number of critical essays on authors Dante and Dickens, Blake and Shelley, George Eliot and George Sand, John Milton, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning among others. Lewis is the author of a poetry collection, Ensemble (Spartan Press, 2019), and has published here and there in various poetry magazines.

Jason Ryberg Jason Ryberg is the author of eighteen books of poetry, six screenplays, a few short stories, a box full of folders, notebooks and scraps of paper that could one day be (loosely) construed as a novel, and, a couple of angry letters to various magazine and newspaper editors.

He is currently an artist-in-residence at both The Prospero Institute of Disquieted P/o/e/t/i/c/s and the Osage Arts Community and is an editor and designer at Spartan Books. His latest collection of poems is The Great American Pyramid Scheme (co-authored with W.E. Leathem, Tim Tarkelly and Mack Thorn, OAC Books, 2022). He lives part-time in Kansas City, Mo., with a rooster named Little Red and a billygoat named Giuseppe and part-time somewhere in the Ozarks, near the Gasconade River, where there are also many strange and wonderful woodland critters.

Linzi Garcia Linzi Garcia can be found frolicking through sunflower fields, cemeteries, and bars across the states. She has been featured in Treading Unique Paths: Young Writers Anthology (VerbalEyze Press, 2016), 50 Haikus: Issue #12 (Prolific Press, 2017), and on the Philosophical Idiot poetry website (November 2017). If you’re lucky, you can even find a haiku of hers in the gumball machine at the Raven Book Store in Lawrence or perhaps hidden in a nook in a tree near you. Garcia currently resides in Lindsborg, dreaming of Lawrence Ferlinghetti and New Orleans. She is always looking for invitations to new places where she can absorb new poetry, perspective, incomparable experiences, and quality whiskey.

Timothy Tarkelly Timothy Tarkelly is a teacher, debate coach, and poet from southeast Kansas. He’s authored several collections of poetry including Gently In Manner, Strongly In Deed: Poems On Eisenhower (2019), On Slip Rigs and Spiritual Growth (2021), and Objects We Know We Don’t Deserve: Poems on Dutch Art. Most recently, he collaborated with visual artist Elena Samarsky on a collaborative work titled, All Other Forms of Expression. When he’s not writing, he teaches students who are far more talented than he will ever be.

Poetry reading at Ad Astra Books & Coffee House on Aug. 7

TOPEKA – When a community develops public trails, it’s not only making an investment in the health and well-being of its citizens, but also improving the appeal and vitality of the community itself – to residents and visitors alike.

How trails can be tools for driving tourism is the topic of the next K-State Research and Extension First Friday e-Call, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 5. The webinar, “Using Trails to Bring Visitors to Town,” will feature a panel of experts led by Sunflower Foundation Senior Program Officer Elizabeth Stewart Burger, who spearheads the foundation’s trails program.

Since 2005, the foundation has been partnering with communities, nonprofit organizations, and schools to help build, expand, enhance, and connect trails across Kansas. Burger will share lessons she has learned from trail towns she has worked with that have effectively turned their trails into tourist attractions.

A trio of panelists will join Burger, including:

●Mike Scanlon, Osawatomie City Manager, who will share his experiences using trails and the outdoors to promote small rural towns. In Osawatomie, he has helped the community establish the eastern trailhead of the 119-mile Flint Hills Nature Trail, which is the seventh-longest rail-trail in American and the longest trail in Kansas. Called “Mile Zero” of the Flint Hills Trail, the eastern trailhead draws trail enthusiasts from around northeast Kansas and beyond.

●Lelan Dains, director of Visit Emporia, is owner of the Emporia-based bicycle shop Gravel City Adventure &amp; Supply Co., as well as the former event manager for the world’s premiere gravel race, Unbound Gravel. He will encourage participants to think outside the box when using trails to encourage tourism. As found of Emporia Spanish Speakers, a nonprofit dedicated to learning about Spanish language and culture, Dains also will speak to how embracing diversity can help communities further broaden their tourism bases.

●Gabriella Talavera, of Prairie Village, is an intern at Sunflower Foundation and a senior community health major at the University of Kansas. She has provided organizational support for the foundation’s Trail Champion Cohort program and Powered by Trails: Day of Learning @ The Powerhouse event. She will discuss the benefits of harnessing the power of young people and social media when promoting trails.

Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will complete the City of Salina’s annual ultrathin bonded asphalt surface project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

Motorists are urged to avoid work zones altogether or proceed with caution for the safety of the crews performing the work.

This type of preventative maintenance is fairly new to Salina but has been used to help extend the life of many roads around the State of Kansas. It consists of a thin, coarse aggregate hot mix over a special asphalt membrane similar to a chip seal but placed in one pass with a spray paver. The membrane prevents water intrusion and provides a superior bond to the old asphalt. The overlay can disperse water quickly off the surface, which reduces roadway spray from vehicles and provides greater visibility and traction in wet weather. UBAS has performed well for other cities and provides a good friction surface in wet weather. UBAS can be installed quickly, and asserts a longer life-span (8-10 years) than micro-surfacing (6-7 years).

The $965,000 project is a major part of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2022 maintenance capital improvement program.

My enjoyment of 'process' evolved into a passion for working in metals. My work is composed of cast iron, fabricated elements, and found objects. Creating a cast iron sculpture involves many steps and procedures that include meticulous craftsmanship and continuous brainstorming of new ideas and ingenuity.&nbsp;No cast is ever the same."

The Sandzén Gallery was fortunate to receive a large collection of his drawings from the Bebb family and will exhibit a selection that are now a part of the gallery's permanent collection. The exhibition will be co-curated by Cori Sherman North and John Mallery.

Though largely self-taught and coming to art later in life, Bebb established a national reputation as an exceptional color etcher. He created more than 220 print designs over his career and provided three gift prints for print societies of which he was a member – the Print Makers Society of California (1953), the Chicago Society of Etchers (1954), and for the Prairie Print Makers (1960). 

His drawings serve as a conduit to his prints, but also demonstrate his skill at capturing landscapes from his home around Muskogee, Okla., as well as favorite spots in Minnesota, Tennessee, and northern Europe.

Sandzén Gallery in Lindsborg: Four new exhibitions, including Bebb works

When the Supreme Court declared in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 that the segregationist doctrine of “separate but equal” was unconstitutional, our government, our society and our very selves were redefined.

With that decision, the court achieved equal status with the other two branches of government — legislative and executive — fulfilling the aspirations for our nation’s democracy.&nbsp;

In that watershed moment, a young&nbsp;Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as a fresh advocate and leader for a movement many hoped would use the high court’s decision to make democracy “real.”

King understood the power of the First Amendment and its guaranteed freedoms, especially the right to protest peacefully. He brought that power alive and helped realize the promise of Brown the following year when he spoke the words that gave the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott its foundation:

With King’s words energizing a peaceful mass protest against racial injustice, the leaders and legions who were prompted to action in Montgomery after&nbsp;Rosa Parks&nbsp;was arrested for refusing to move to the back of a city bus set out to change the nation. They sparked social change and examination that continues today.&nbsp;

For those who want to better understand this and other touchstone events in the fight for civil rights, we have created a free online course, “<a href="https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/first-amendment-center/course-the-first-amendment-and-the-civil-rights-movement/" target="_blank">The First Amendment and the Civil Rights Movement</a>.” The lessons address important civil rights cases, with video interviews of leading figures and historical front pages of newspapers from the Newseum collection to set the scenes.

The course’s interdisciplinary, multimedia design makes it an excellent resource for teachers, public officials, social leaders and others who want to learn about the First Amendment’s roots in the nation’s search for racial justice over more than two centuries to “form a more perfect union.”&nbsp;

Because of the First Amendment, that mid-20th&nbsp;century movement of peaceful mass protest grew throughout the South and continued for a decade. The South’s resistance to Brown elevated the issue of racial segregation to a violation of the civil rights amendments. In turn, that propelled the federal courts at every level to reaffirm Brown in its most expansive terms — with a free press and free speakers tracking every move.&nbsp;

These cases challenged the courts from within to oppose those Southern district and appellate judges who openly espoused resistance to Brown. The Doctrine of Interposition — which allowed states to stand between the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and federal law — had to be overturned once and for all as an unconstitutional view of states’ rights.

The protests and petitions of the 1950s and 1960s led the White House and Congress to live up to their duty to enforce the human rights at stake in Brown, which required bipartisan political commitment and action. The result was the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, crowning moments in congressional history.&nbsp;

The Black Lives Matter movement is today’s version of Selma, Ala., where nonviolent marchers in support of voting rights for Black Americans were met on the Edmund Pettus Bridge with billy clubs and tear gas.&nbsp;As&nbsp;David Halberstam&nbsp;wrote in his book “The Fifties,” the earlier movement educated the news media, and the media educated America. The First Amendment freedoms powered that education, then and now, by providing a free press and protecting the rights of those who marched as they sought to touch the conscience of the nation.

The First Amendment is a primary tool for those who seek to revitalize in the 21st&nbsp;century the efforts made in the last century to finally fulfill the promises of freedom and equality in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The result was the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, crowning moments in congressional history.&nbsp;The Black Lives Matter movement is today’s version of Selma, Ala., where nonviolent marchers in support of voting rights for Black Americans were met on the Edmund Pettus Bridge with billy clubs and tear gas.&nbsp;As&nbsp;David Halberstam&nbsp;wrote in his book “The Fifties,” the earlier movement educated the news media, and the media educated America. The First Amendment freedoms powered that education, then and now, by providing a free press and protecting the rights of those who marched as they sought to touch the conscience of the nation.The First Amendment is a primary tool for those who seek to revitalize in the 21st&nbsp;century the efforts made in the last century to finally fulfill the promises of freedom and equality in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.Robert Bickel, professor emeritus of law at Stetson University College of Law, and Gene Policinski, senior fellow for the First Amendment at the Freedom Forum, are authors of “<a href="https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/first-amendment-center/course-the-first-amendment-and-the-civil-rights-movement/" target="_blank">The First Amendment and the Civil Rights Movement</a>,” created with the support of Stetson University and the Freedom Forum. Position Title:&nbsp;Service Technician / Quality Control Specialist

The Service Technician at Weddle and Sons will be tasked with assessing leaks, planning and performing many different small to medium-size roof repairs on steep/low slope roofs along with other company projects. Ability to perform repairs on the following materials: composition shingles; single ply membranes and built-up roof systems. This person will be able to work independently with little or no supervision; must also be able to work well with a team and know when to ask for outside input and support.

The Quality Control Specialist (QCS) at Weddle and Sons will develop and demonstrate skill in overseeing the day-to-day operations of a residential roofing crew and will show an advanced level of initiative in communication with supervisors, subordinates, and clients. A QCS must be committed to the core values of the company and must show the potential to coach others to higher levels of execution.

The starting hourly rate in the range of $16.00 - $20.00 based upon level of experience, paid biweekly, per 40 hours worked in a week with overtime paid at time-and-a-half.

The company provides 5 days of paid vacation and seven paid holiday days annually. Employees are eligible to join a company-sponsored health insurance plan after 30 days of employment. Employees are eligible for a company-sponsored 401k plan after 12 months of employment.

8. Maintain industry-best cleanliness of the job site, with specific attention to trash and nail clean up

9. Completing roof inspection form before leaving the job-site

11. Performing the installation of custom chimney flashing and skylight installation

13. Proper documentation of job notes on company platform

14. Regular communication with the Production Manager on ways to improve processes

1. Basic knowledge of roofing systems (and ability to learn quickly) with overall technical proficiency

2. Physical fitness sufficient to perform tasks that can be demanding at times

3. Problem-solving ability to troubleshoot roofing (and related) issues: ability to identify symptoms and systematically eliminate potential causes until solving the issue

Working Environment and Expectations:

Hours: A typical work week is expected to be not less than 40 hours. Given the seasonality of this business, we expect that there will be many weeks in middle of the year that require well over 40 hours of work. At the same time, there will be many weeks in the winter that may require somewhat less than 40 hours. At any time, and especially during the winter months, the service technician may be asked to assist with various company initiatives.

Travel: A service technician role is likely to involve occasional travel for company training, and projects. At times, business demand or weather events may require that the QCS spend time working in other company locations.
