ABILENE – Six beautiful equines will be part of the show at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene.

Broken Spoke Clydesdales, Winfield will bring their six-horse Clydesdale hitch pulling a freight wagon to the rodeo Aug. 3-6.

Mark DeCoudres, owner of the horses and the hitch, got involved with Clydesdales eleven years ago. It had always been a dream of his to drive a team. He had grown up around horses but didn’t know how to drive or harness them.&nbsp; He bought a team of two and left them at the seller’s house, returning each weekend to get lessons on how to harness and drive them.

It wasn’t easy to learn to drive a hitch, DeCoudres said. “I remember one time,” he recalled, “I was driving four. I didn’t have my lines (how the horses are controlled) just right, and the next thing I knew, the lead horse was turned completely around, looking at me.”

Each pair of horses has its own job when pulling a load. Jackson and Brock, the team closest to the wagon, are the wheel team.&nbsp; Brody and Forest, the team in the middle, are the swing team. Divinity and Diesel are the lead team. Usually the wheel horses weigh more than the lead horses, and the lead horses are more athletic and have to travel farther than the wheel team when making turns.

The horses eat about forty pounds of hay and fifteen pounds of grain or pelleted feed a day. In Abilene, they will be kept in display stalls under a tent at the rodeo grounds. The public is invited to see them during the days of the rodeo. That is DeCoudres’ favorite part. “I like interacting with the people. There are children who would never be able to be up and close to a horse like that, if we weren’t there. Even for the older people, it brings back memories of their childhood, when their granddad or parents used draft horses on the farm.”

Broken Spoke has qualified for the Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series Finals twice, in 2016-2017, and finished as one of the top four Clydesdale hitches in North America.

They have entertained at rodeos and events across the nation, including the National Western Stock Show &amp; Rodeo in Denver, the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, the Prescott (Ariz.) rodeo, and others.

DeCoudres loves sharing his animals with others.

“We want to share this majestic creature with young and old alike,” he said. “They’re a passion of ours, and we want to spread that passion to everyone we meet.”

The Clydesdales will be in the parade on Aug. 4 at 4 p.m., and in the rodeo all four nights: Aug. 3-6.&nbsp; They will also be on display on the east side of the rodeo grounds during the day, for the public to visit.

The Abilene rodeo is Aug. 3-6, beginning at 7:30 pm each night. Tickets are on sale at West’s Country Mart, at the fair office, and online at <a href="http://CKFF.net">CKFF.net</a>. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the gate. Children’s tickets (ages 4-10) are $5, whether purchased in advance or at the gate.

Police are looking for an electric bicycle that was stolen from a central Salina residence this past weekend. 

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday, someone stole a Swagtron E-bike that was parked on the west side of a residence in the 600 block of W. Prescott Avenue.

The electronic bicycle, valued at $1,200, was white and teal in color and had smaller wheels, Forrester said.

SMOLAN - Batteries are suspected to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a pickup and damaged a house in Smolan Monday evening.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire Districts 6 and 2 were sent to the 100 block of S. Third Street in Smolan at 6:30 p.m. Monday for the report of a vehicle fire.

A 47-year-old man had parked his 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup in the driveway. A short time later, a neighbor went to the residence to alert the man to a fire in the pickup, Melander said. The man and neighbors kept the fire at bay until firefighters could arrive.

Meander said that batteries in the back seat of the pickup are suspected as the cause of the blaze.

The pickup, valued at $20,000, was destroyed. Additionally, an estimated $1,000 in damage was done to the siding on a nearby house. Melander said.

Blaze destroys pickup, damages siding in Smolan

A brazen thief was caught on surveillance video stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle in a south Salina parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 35-year-old Salina man reported that his daughter had driven his 2005 Ford Excursion to work at Lowe's, 3035 S. Ninth Street, and parked it in the west part of the parking lot at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday. When she took a break at approximately 6 p.m., she noticed the SUV was making funny noises and called her father, who arrived a short time later and discovered that the catalytic converter was missing from the vehicle.

Surveillance video from Lowe's shows an older model Chevrolet Trailblazer, possibly gold in color, parked next to the SUV at 4:20 p.m., Forrester said. The Trailblazer left and then returned a short time later. A person in a white t-shirt was seen around the two vehicles. The Trailblazer left after approximately eight minutes.

Total loss was estimated at $2,000, Forrester said.

In a legal opinion on May 26, 2021, Kansas Attorney General noted that "Catalytic converters are covered by the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act, so transactions involving their purchase by scrap metal dealers are regulated and must be reported to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation database."

By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostA brazen thief was caught on surveillance video stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle in a south Salina parking lot Tuesday afternoon.Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 35-year-old Salina man reported that his daughter had driven his 2005 Ford Excursion to work at Lowe's, 3035 S. Ninth Street, and parked it in the west part of the parking lot at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday. When she took a break at approximately 6 p.m., she noticed the SUV was making funny noises and called her father, who arrived a short time later and discovered that the catalytic converter was missing from the vehicle.Surveillance video from Lowe's shows an older model Chevrolet Trailblazer, possibly gold in color, parked next to the SUV at 4:20 p.m., Forrester said. The Trailblazer left and then returned a short time later. A person in a white t-shirt was seen around the two vehicles. The Trailblazer left after approximately eight minutes.Total loss was estimated at $2,000, Forrester said.In a legal opinion on May 26, 2021, Kansas Attorney General noted that "Catalytic converters are covered by the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act, so transactions involving their purchase by scrap metal dealers are regulated and must be reported to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation database."

The world belongs those who show up. That simple idea has become one of the cardinal rules in my life. What I love about this rule is it doesn’t hinge on predisposed talent or having the right connections. The only way to unlock the potential of this rule is to just keep showing up.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Showing up has been on my mind as I contemplate the upcoming primary.

Over the years, I have heard many people dismiss primaries as unimportant. They may say their vote doesn’t matter or claim they will vote when the “real” election happens. That type of thinking is flawed because often the primary election is the real race. If you live in an area that is largely affiliated with one party, the primary likely determines the front runner or the only name that will be on the ballot in the general election. In our state, there are dozens of state and local races where only one party has candidates who have filed for election. This is your chance to show up for your community. If you hesitate to vote because you aren’t sure who to vote for, I invite you to visit&nbsp;<a href="http://KFB.org">KFB.org</a> to see a list of the candidates endorsed by Kansas Farm Bureau’s Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends. These candidates have been recommended by our local members through a grassroots process.&nbsp;KFB’s political action committee takes local feedback and, in cases of incumbents’, voting histories into consideration to make endorsements for candidates who understand, value and support agriculture in our state. If that is not enough of a reason to show up for the primary, here's an important question: Do you have an opinion on abortion? This is such a heated and prominent issue on the national stage that I am guessing most people do. This primary election is your opportunity to share that opinion without having to put a sign in your yard and jeopardize any relationships. The primary will feature a proposed constitutional amendment that would affirm there is no Kansas constitutional right to abortion, and the right to pass laws to regulate abortion. If the amendment fails, the constitution would not change leaving in place the recently recognized right to abortion. I am not advocating for or against the amendment. However, I am advocating for you to show up and cast a ballot for your beliefs and values. If I haven’t convinced you in any of my previous points, let me try one more. You probably already knew an election was coming from the seemingly endless advertisements on social media, TV, streaming services and in your mailbox. These advertisements are overly sensational, meant to vilify one candidate while making a hero out of another, and often make claims that are irrelevant to the position in question. The reason we are bombarded with these advertisement is because organizations, many outside the state, are spending millions of dollars to sway your vote. All that money is spent in hope that an unengaged voter will show up to the poll and pick someone based on the faint memory they have of an advertisement. If you don’t want our elections to be determined by the highest bidder, show up as an informed voter for the primary. Politics can be overwhelming and it is easy to feel like your vote doesn’t matter, but it does. The world and elections belong to those who show up and I hope you will on Aug. 2.

INSIGHT: Primary reasons to show up

The Tri-Rivers Fair schedule may look different this year starting this Saturday and then running Tuesday through Aug. 6, after the 2021 decision to demolish the Tri-Rivers Stadium to make space for the construction of new tennis courts. 

The Saline County Fair Association, however, created new opportunities using the spaces available at the Saline County Expo Center, and, as in the past, 4-H’ers living in Saline County working with K-State Research and Extension’s Central Kansas Extension District will participate in a complete line-up of fair competition and events.

The Tri-Rivers Fair Demolition Derby will launch the 2022 event, with pits open at 3 p.m., gates open at 6 p.m. and the show beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Salina Speedway, 2841 S. Burma Road. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-12. The demolition derby will include four classes: limited weld, '80s and newer bone stock full size, bone stock compact, and mini van.

The derby is coordinated by the Championship Demolition Derby Association (CDDA), with head promoter Chad Markley at the helm of the association. Markley has built, drove and won at all levels of demolition derby shows for over 25 years across Kansas, the Midwest and nation-wide, earning respect from fair boards, promoters, fabricators and other demolition derby drivers. The CDDA is the group that will coordinate the demolition derby during the 2022 Kansas State Fair, and has a schedule of events across central Kansas, the state, and the Midwest. Open Class exhibitors in home economics and horticulture can bring items for judging starting at the beginning of the fair week. Exhibitors wishing to enter judging competitions in floriculture and horticulture divisions will be entered on Aug. 2 between 8 a.m. and noon in Kenwood Hall at the Saline County Expo Center. All other open class exhibits can be registered between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 3.

The Tri-Rivers Fair parade will launch the fair events at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the theme Fancy Like … Fair Life! Ken Wasserman will serve as the grand marshal for the 2022 Tri-Rivers Fair Parade, which runs along Santa Fe Avenue, from Elm Street to Prescott Avenue. Early registration for being in the fair parade was due Friday, June 15, however, parade entries will be accepted at the fire station on Elm Street the evening of the parade, with check-in starting at 5:30 p.m.

WEEE Entertainment will open the Tri-Rivers Fair carnival at 6 p.m. Aug. 3, opening each day at 6 p.m. through Aug. 7. Commercial exhibits will run from Aug. 3 through Aug. 6 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center, with more than 20 businesses and organizations setting up informational booths daily.

The Tri-Rivers Fair royalty crowning will take place at 7 p.m. in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center. King and queen candidates are nominated by each 4-H club in Saline County. Each will be recognized at the crowning, and first, second, and third place candidates will be announced. The 2023 Tri-Rivers Fair King and Queen, along with second and third place candidates, will help assist the distribution of awards during the 4-H and open class livestock competitions throughout the Tri-Rivers Fair.

The Community Showcase will take place from 3-8 p.m. Aug. 4 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center showcasing talent from the local area.

Aug. 4 will include evening activity geared just for kids. The Kids Pedal Tractor Pull, coordinated by M&amp;C Pedal Power, will begin at 6:30 p.m. with registration at 5:45 p.m. outside of the Tony’s Pizza Events Center. The Kids Pedal Tractor Pull will include competition categories for kids ages 4-12, with trophies awarded. This is a qualifying event for the Kansas State Fair.

Kids can also get their face painted by face painters setting up shop outside of the Tony’s Pizza Events Center, and a Touch-A-Truck event will take place from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 4 in the parking lot south of Tony’s Pizza Events Center for kids to explore. The Touch-A-Truck event hopes to include a school bus, semi-truck and trailer from Isaacson Truckline, tractor from LandPride, equipment from LDI and other heavy equipment and emergency response equipment.

The Tri-Rivers Fair, in cooperation with Salina Cornhole, will host a corn hole tournament, starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 in the horse practice arena at the heart of the Saline County Expo Center. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. which includes a $40 registration fee. The tournament will be a double elimination tournament with prize money distributed to first, second, and third-place winners.

The final day of the Tri-Rivers Fair will wrap up with a free concert celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Peterson Farm Bros release of I’m Farming and I Grow It at 5 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway. The concert will headline a full schedule of educational opportunities spanning the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during a new event called an Inspiration and Innovation Showcase. The showcase will feature Saline County businesses and organizations presenting forward-thinking projects.

The line-up of educational presentations includes Cory McDaniel and Brent Sadler with WCCiT with information about cybersecurity; Emanuel Ashiedu from Salina Code Academy sharing classes available to teach computer coding; The Land Institute; Rolling Hills Zoo; the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce; Saline County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes presenting about the new Saline County app and ARPA funds distribution, and Jim Kowach with the City of Salina explaining the city’s goal to reduce solid waste. A legislative update featuring local representation and senators in the Kansas legislature will presented at noon on Aug. 6.

With the future on stage inside Tony’s Pizza Event Center, agriculture technology of the past will be displayed outside in the south parking lot of the event center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6. The Kansas Tractor Club will host an antique tractor show and tractor games, with tractors arriving as early as 9 a.m.

The Tri-Rivers Fair concludes with the Draft Horse Pull at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 in Ag Hall at the Saline County Expo Center. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-12. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Tri-Rivers Fair offers new reasons to come out to county fair

On July 27, 1953, the Korean War armistice was signed at Panmunjom, ending three years of fighting.

In 1789, President George Washington signed a measure establishing the Department of Foreign Affairs, forerunner of the Department of State.

In 1866, Cyrus W. Field finished laying out the first successful underwater telegraph cable between North America and Europe (a previous cable in 1858 burned out after only a few weeks' use).

Seventeen-year-old Lydia Jacoby of Alaska won the women's 100-meter breaststroke, upsetting American teammate and defending champion Lilly King. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that even vaccinated people return to wearing masks indoors in parts of the U.S. where the delta variant of the coronavirus was fueling infection surges. On July 17, the Smoky View 4-H Club held its annual club tour at its monthly meeting. The meeting was held at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;

A club tour is when a club member shares a project they made with the rest of the club to practice presenting their project before the county fair.&nbsp;

During the club tour, several different projects were presented, including origami, paintings, cookies, and jarred salsa.&nbsp;

Also during the meeting, Krew Swisher talked about raising wild pheasants.

The club will meet again on Aug. 14 at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;

Smoky View 4-H Club holds its 2022 club tour

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;It is a familiar sight in smaller Kansas communities throughout the state: vibrant downtown districts whose allure is somewhat diminished by one or two vacant or dilapidated buildings. In many cases, a major barrier to making these structures useful again is the high cost of renovation.

Last fall, the Kansas Department of Commerce launched a new community revitalization program, the Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL), to address the issue. With HEAL, the state assists building owners with matching grants to cover eligible expenses as historic properties are revitalized. HEAL was made possible through a collaboration with the Patterson Family Foundation, which has been dedicated to strengthening rural communities since 2007.

Today, Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland announced the inaugural HEAL grant recipients. Slightly more than $1.8 million in matching grants will be awarded to help 32 projects across the state.

“The goal of the HEAL is to rescue downtown buildings and restore them as productive spaces for business and community use,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary&nbsp;Toland said. “Seeing our downtown districts turned into more attractive and vibrant places to live and work, along with creating new jobs and services for Kansans, is key to our state’s prosperity.”

Grants are divided into two funding categories, Emergency and Regular, for cities with fewer than 50,000 residents. The program is designed to transform buildings for new or expanding businesses, housing, arts and culture, civic engagement, childcare or entrepreneurship – and once again become economic drivers in the community.

“Vibrant downtown areas are important to the future prospects of smaller communities, so it was not a difficult decision for us to join the Department of Commerce and its partners in funding HEAL grants,”&nbsp;said Lindsey Patterson Smith, President of the Patterson Family Foundation. “HEAL grants give architecturally significant buildings a new lease on life, so they can continue to play vital roles in their communities.”

Emergency HEAL was established to make strategic investments in underutilized, dilapidated or buildings in danger of collapse. Twenty-four applications were received for this category. A total of 10 projects are receiving $585,000 in matching grant funds.

Area communities receive revitalization HEAL grants

This year's Tri-Rivers Fair will include a performance by the Peterson Farm Bros.

 </figure>By LESLIE MANNING Tri-Rivers Fair BoardThis year's Tri-Rivers Fair will include a performance by the Peterson Farm Bros.The free concert is scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway.Peterson Farm Bros celebrate 10 years since releasing I’m Farming and I Grow It parody on YouTube“We rarely perform all three of us together, maybe once or twice a year, and it’s usually close to home,” Greg Peterson said. “We used to do three brother performances when we were still in college. Then the farm grew to where it relied on one brother being home.”Peterson, the eldest of the Peterson Farm Bros, hosted a 10 year anniversary celebration on July 1 with a farm tour and free concert at The Heights, a wedding venue on his property located on Burma Road.Promoting agriculture with music“I’m 100 percent using my major and everything I learned in college,” Peterson said. “When I was in college, I did not think that was going to be the case. I’m literally using everything I learned in college in my current professional life.”Peterson, who graduated from Kansas State University in 2013, earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture communications and journalism, with a minor in music performance. While a junior at K-State, Peterson presented a project idea to his brothers, Nathan and Kendal, who were still in school at Southeast of Saline High School.“I came up with the Farming and I Grow It parody when I was at a Sonic drive-in with a couple of friends and I’m Sexy and I Know It came on the radio,” Peterson said. “I took that idea home and shared it with Nathan and Kendal when they were still in high school.”Peterson had made a few other videos prior to the music video parody, featuring activity on the farm and music videos he had recorded.“I had a few other videos before,” Peterson said. “Just a few simple things. That’s where I learned to edit and make music videos. I’m kind of the one who does all the behind the scene work producing, editing and communicating.”During ag communication classes at K-State, the content was often focused on brainstorming ways to communicate about the agriculture industry. Peterson’s experience creating simple videos provided the foundation for the idea to use music and make a music video to communicate about agriculture.“I grew up attending Southeast of Saline, and people always knew we were farm kids, and we were always talking about farming,” Peterson said. “We tried to break some of the stereotypes, maybe that farming was boring or stereotypical things of what farmers would wear or how they would look.”Creating a parody, and developing new lyrics to an already popular tune, dates back to Southeast of Saline days, also.“I wrote a parody for English 11 to She’s My Cherry Pie about Henry David Thoreau,” Peterson said. “I’ve been doing it since I was a little kid. It is something that just comes naturally.”By June of 2012, Peterson had taken his idea from the Sonic Drive-In, and developed the lyrics to the parody I’m Farming and I Grow It, a music video promoting agriculture, that was released on June 25, 2012. The video featured Peterson and his brothers, with their little sister, Laura, behind the camera.“It got five million views in a week,” Peterson said. “That was the first time we tried to communicate anything about agriculture beyond our friends, and it definitely surpassed our wildest dreams.”The day the video was released, Peterson went to work in the field, taking his lunch with him. Nathan and Kendal were eating lunch at home, watching the computer tally the views on YouTube, where the music video was released.“They called and said, ‘Dude, you need to get in here. This video is blowing up,’” Peterson said. “It got up to 20,000 views that next day. We had talked about how many views we would get. We said maybe we will hit 50,000 in the next few years, that was our benchmark. We hit 50,000 in 48 hours.”According to Peterson, farming came to a stand still that week, as media requests kept coming in. Peterson estimates that he did over 20 interviews in one day, with KSN, KWCH and KAKE in their barn yard all at once, interviewing one brother at a time in different locations on the property.“Videos go viral all the time now,” Peterson said. “In 2012, there just wasn’t much video content out there, and that was kind of what created the media drive. I have no idea how they got my phone number, because it wasn’t posted anywhere.”In addition to local, regional and state media, the Peterson Farm Bros were approached by the national media when I’m Farming and I Grow It went viral.“We got called by Good Morning America first, and they wanted us to dance on their show with the original artists,” Peterson said. “We were uncomfortable with that, so we said no. Looking back, that was a crazy thing to say no.”Then, Fox and Friends called, and requested a talk show interview.“They flew us out to New York City and put us up for the night,” Peterson said. “That was an exciting opportunity.”As the summer of 2012 wound down, Peterson prepared to return back to K-State to complete his senior year, while brother, Nathan, anticipated his first year at K-State as a freshman.“I made a few random videos in the fall, and we made Farmer Style in December over Christmas break,” Peterson said. “We filmed it in two days, and it wasn’t as finely tuned. We were just trying to get on the Gangnum Style trend. That trend was to create a parody, or dance the Gangnum Style dance. Everybody was talking about Gangnum Style for, like, two months.”According to Peterson, the Peterson Farm Bros parody video to Gangnum Style, titled Farmer Style, was one of the top five parodies of Gangnum Style.“Farmer Style has over 18 million views,” Peterson said. “I’m Farming and I Grow It went viral because it was the first of its kind, a parody rap song about farming. I lot of people shared it that are in agriculture. Farmer Style went twice as fast as I’m Farming and I Grow It. It wasn’t circulated as much in the ag community, so it really bridged the gap into urban audiences.”Since its release, the I’m Farming and I Grow It parody music video, created by the Peterson Farm Bros, has received more than 12 million views. The Farmer Style parody video has more than 18 million views.“We had so many comments on Farmer Style, where you could tell that people had never seen information about farming in their life,” Peterson said. “It exposed us to the idea that there are a lot of people who really don’t know anything about agriculture. We realized there needs to be some education, beyond just entertainment.”According to Peterson, the Peterson Farm Bros did not set out to make a bunch of parody videos and educational videos until Farmer Style went viral.“When both of them went viral, we saw this was a platform,” Peterson said. “I was still in school, so I don’t think we really got started posting content until I graduated and I was home full-time working on the farm. Then, I started making videos a little more consistently.”According to Peterson, Facebook became the main platform for the Peterson Farm Bros to share videos, with their Facebook page jumping to 100,000 followers pretty quickly.“For probably five years, we posted videos to YouTube and shared to Facebook,” Peterson said. “Then, they quit getting along. Once Facebook got video, we started uploading to both.”Videos posted on Facebook would go viral, and Peterson would often post pictures of what he was doing on the farm that day with a caption. Followers would often post comments in the discussion threads, and Peterson would answer questions about agriculture.“Ever since, that has been just as much what we are doing as the entertainment - the education and answering people’s questions,” Peterson said. “A lot of people had questions just about our farming operation and how it worked, what crops we raised and how we took care of our cattle. There were a lot of misconceptions too … like ‘I’ve heard farmers do this’ or ‘Our food isn’t healthy because of this.’ We spend a lot of time dedicated to answering people’s questions.”To leverage time, Peterson came up with a blog system, involving answers to some of the more frequently asked questions the Peterson Farm Bros received.“When the questions would come up, I would refer them to the blog,” Peterson said. “That way we weren’t typing out long comments, multiple times that said the same thing.”10 years of innovative ag communications“About every four to six months we do a new parody, because they are such a huge undertaking,” Peterson said. “Sometimes we want to do a parody to a song, but I can’t come up with lyrics to the whole thing. That’s where some medleys come in.”In April of 2013, the Peterson Farm Bros partnered with the Kansas Department of Agriculture to promote the new From the Land of Kansas trademark program, publishing a YMCA parody titled From the Land of Kansas. This video was followed by a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air parody, titled A Fresh Breath of Farm Air, published in June of 2013. The 10 year collection of videos on the Peterson Farm Bros YouTube channel includes 24 parody music videos, some original songs produced by Peterson and Thomas Cook out of Wichita, Christmas carols family sing alongs and many educational videos focused on work completed on the farm.“I will write lyrics in a matter of hours or days,” Peterson said. “I wait for the inspiration to hit, and then it comes together. I write a lot of parody lyrics sitting in the tractor seat, or sometimes I will kind of woodshed the lyrics sitting at my desk at home if I really need to get it done.”Before any filming is done, ideally the Peterson Farm Bros record the audio in Peterson’s recording studio set up in his home.“When we are filming, we have that audio playing, and we lips sync to our own voices,” Peterson said. “You can’t really record outside in the Kansas wind live. That doesn’t really work.”Sometimes, when time is limited, the Peterson Farm Bros just memorize the lyrics, and film without audio.“We’ve gone and filmed scenes multiple times where Nathan and Kendal didn’t even know their audio yet, and I would just tell them the words, and we would film them saying the words,”Peterson said.The next step Peterson accomplishes in the process of producing a video for the Peterson Farm Bros is story boarding, marking out the scenes he expects to include in each video.“In our early videos, we wouldn’t really story board,” Peterson said. “We would just mess around until we had filled the video. In our first few videos, our sister was 11 or 12-years-old, and she would sit behind the tripod and she was the one who filmed our videos.”The video filming is mainly done on an iPhone, with the I’m Farming and I Grow It video filmed on an iPod touch.“That really dates that first video,” Peterson said. “I think I got an iPhone that start of my senior year of college. Once our sister, Laura, got into high school, we would put the phone on a tripod and let it go.”Once the audio is recorded and video is filmed, Peterson uses Garage Band to edit audio and iMovie to edit video.“I’d bought a MacBook Pro my freshman year of college,” Peterson said. “I learned by trial and error, just messing around. Peterson has dabbled with TikTok, posting Farm Life videos to TikTok. The posts have received over three million views, and the Peterson Farm Bros have over 100,000 followers on TikTok.“TikTok is a totally different language for me,” Peterson said. “That is a young person’s social media game. I’m doing my best to learn it, but we’ve maybe been a little slow to move over to TikTok. If you want to be successful at TikTok, you need to be posting everyday and keep that content relevant. We have enough social media responsibility, we can’t justify that.”Plus, for the Peterson Farm Bros, YouTube and Facebook are paying the bills.“We have ads on our videos,” Peterson said. “We get a deal from YouTube and Facebook every month, split three ways. It’s not like we can quit farming. It is worth the time to create all those videos. We don’t make money off the parodies, because they are copyrighted, but the vlogs of what we are doing on the farm, that don’t have music. We make money on those.”Ten years after I’m Farming and I Grow It, all three Peterson Farm Bros have graduated from high school and Kansas State University, as has their little sister, Laura. Nathan majored in ag technology management, and manages anything on the farm that is technology including GPS and monitors in the equipment helping with precision agriculture practices. Kendal majored in animal science, focusing on the livestock portion of the diversified farming operation located outside of Assaria, where the Peterson Farm Bros videos are shot. In addition to farming, Peterson has coordinated speaking engagements and performances, similar to the concert scheduled during the Tri-Rivers Fair at 5 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway.“I would say for the last nine years, I’ve been a speaker,” Peterson said. “It’s definitely a hybrid of speaking and performing. It’s almost always half speaking and half entertaining, with speaking in between the songs on a certain subject. It’s advocating on agriculture.”Peterson speaks at between 50-60 events each year, with the most speaking gigs in one year being 80. Nathan and Kendal average between 30-40 speaking gigs in a year, alternating who comes so that one brother continues working on the farm.In addition to earning degrees and finding their role in the family farming operation with their parents, David and Marla Peterson, all three Peterson Farm Bros have gotten married, and each have at least one daughter … Kendal has two. Little sister Laura got married this year, and moved to Nebraska.“All of our kids are under the age of two,” Peterson said. “Things have changed more in the last two years than at any other time since we started doing videos. We are trying to find a new balance between farming time, family time, video time and performing time. It’s still trying to work itself out.”
