Salina police officer recognized during KLETC graduation

ABILENE - Area lakes and rivers are calling as Kansas residents head outdoors to enjoy the hot summer temperatures.

After more than 14 months of being unable to do so, the Dickinson County Clerk’s office once again is selling fishing and hunting licenses and can register boats.

The services could not be offered during the time the department was temporarily located at the Abilene Civic Center while the courthouse was renovated.

The clerk’s office is located on the main floor of the courthouse, located at 109 E. First Street, Abilene. For more information about any of the topics, call the clerk’s office at (785) 263-3774.

All boats powered by gasoline, diesel, electric or sail must be registered and numbered. Sailboards and personal watercraft also are considered boats, according to information on the Kansas Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) website.

People who want to register their boats now are asked to provide proof of the boat’s hull number. The US Coast Guard is asking states to verify the boat’s hull identification number (HIN).

“People either have to show us a photo they have taken of the hull number or they need to take a piece of paper and pencil and scratch the hull ID number,” explained Dickinson County Clerk Jeanne Livingston.

Vessels manufactured before 1973 often do not have a HIN so KDWP will assign one if necessary.

The hull number information must be submitted with registration paperwork for a new or transfer application.

HINs are typically located at the various locations depending on the boat:

●Sports and fishing boats -- Back right outside corner;

●Pontoons -- On the right side of the frame above the pontoon, but below the deck;

●Personal watercraft – Under a seat, as well as on the lip of the footrest.

Besides having a copy of the HIN, other information required to register a boat includes:

●Proof of sales tax paid (if purchased from a dealer)

●Registration numbers from the boat (the KA number if the boat previously was registered)

As for statement of fact forms, Livingston said they are available at the clerk’s office.

“Maybe someone bought their boat at a garage sale so they wouldn’t have a bill of sale,” Livingston said. “The statement of fact has the owner writing where they purchased the boat.”

As for the KA number, Livingston said if the boat was previously registered in Kansas it will have a KA number; however, if it was purchased in another state, Kansas Wildlife and Parks will assign a KA number.

The cost of a new boat registration or renewal is $42.50.

Anglers between the ages of 16 through 74 must have a valid fishing license in their possession while fishing in Kansas, according to the KDWP website.

Non-residents 16 and older must have a valid nonresident license to fish in Kansas, unless fishing on a private pond not leased for public fishing.

Various types of licenses are available, including a multi-year youth license, National Guard permit; Kansas disabled veterans and others.

Different fees are assessed based on the type of license of permit.

Licenses are good for one year, except for multi-year, five-day, lifetime and one-day licenses.

All Kansas residents ages 16 to 74 must have a resident hunting license unless exempt by Kansas law. Non-resident hunters must have a non-resident hunting license, regardless of age.

Multi-year and lifetime licenses also are available for qualifying individuals.

Most licenses are good only for one year.

Just like with fishing licenses, different fees are accessed based on the type of hunting license.

NEVADA, Mo. - A 38-year-old Lindsborg woman with multiple active warrants in Kansas is in custody in connection to a theft case in Deerfield, Mo.

Deerfield, Mo., is located in southwestern Missouri on U.S. Highway 54 between Nevada, Mo., and Fort Scott, Kan.

On Thursday, the Vernon County Sheriff's Office issued the following information about the case on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064519486768">Facebook page</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.vernoncosheriff.org/press_view.php?id=130">website</a>.

On the morning of May 4th, Vernon County Sheriff’s Deputies took a report of a theft that had occurred from a vehicle at a residence on Walnut Street in Deerfield, MO. According to Sheriff’s Office Officials, it was determined that the suspects proceeded to use a stolen debit card at multiple businesses in Vernon County after the theft.

Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said that Detectives were able to identify a suspect by reviewing surveillance footage and were able to locate a potential residence where the suspect had been staying. On the morning of May 5th, Detectives conducted a follow-up at a residence on W. Vernon Street in Nevada, MO. During the follow-up, a 38-year-old female identified as Alesha Reavis of Lindsborg, Kansas was taken into custody on multiple active Felony warrants for her arrest from the State of Kansas. Suspected methamphetamine was located as well as some of the stolen property.

On the afternoon of May 10th, Deputies were able to locate another suspect involved, identified as 21-year-old Daniel Hankins of Nevada, MO and take him into custody.

On 5-11-2022, the Courts issued a warrant charging Hankins with Stealing-Firearm, Stealing, and Fraudulent Use of Credit/Debit Device. Hankins is currently being held at the Vernon County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.

Additional charges for Reavis’ involvement are being presented to the Vernon County Prosecutor’s Office for her role in the theft. Reavis is currently being held in the Vernon County Jail on the unrelated active warrants.

NEVADA, Mo. - A 38-year-old Lindsborg woman with multiple active warrants in Kansas is in custody in connection to a theft case in Deerfield, Mo.Deerfield, Mo., is located in southwestern Missouri on U.S. Highway 54 between Nevada, Mo., and Fort Scott, Kan.On Thursday, the Vernon County Sheriff's Office issued the following information about the case on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064519486768">Facebook page</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.vernoncosheriff.org/press_view.php?id=130">website</a>.On the morning of May 4th, Vernon County Sheriff’s Deputies took a report of a theft that had occurred from a vehicle at a residence on Walnut Street in Deerfield, MO. According to Sheriff’s Office Officials, it was determined that the suspects proceeded to use a stolen debit card at multiple businesses in Vernon County after the theft. Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said that Detectives were able to identify a suspect by reviewing surveillance footage and were able to locate a potential residence where the suspect had been staying. On the morning of May 5th, Detectives conducted a follow-up at a residence on W. Vernon Street in Nevada, MO. During the follow-up, a 38-year-old female identified as Alesha Reavis of Lindsborg, Kansas was taken into custody on multiple active Felony warrants for her arrest from the State of Kansas. Suspected methamphetamine was located as well as some of the stolen property.<figure>

Lindsborg woman arrested in connection to Missouri theft case

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.4% in April. This was unchanged from 2.4% in March and a decrease from 3.5% in April 2021.

“While the unemployment rate remained steady at 2.4% over-the-month, it has seen significant improvement over-the-year as more Kansans move from unemployed to employed,” said Secretary Amber Shultz.  

The jobless rate in Saline County fell from 2.7 percent in March to 2 percent in April. Dickinson County saw a fall from 3.1 in March to 2.2 percent in April. Across the region, most counties are below 2 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 500 from March. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 100 over the month, while government increased by 600.

“Preliminary estimates for April indicate little change over-the-month for seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in Kansas,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Small gains reported for multiple industries were offset by a decline in professional and business services. Despite the monthly decline for professional and business services, the industry has added jobs over-the-year.”

Since April 2021, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 22,900. This change is due to an increase of 23,400 private sector jobs and a decrease of 500 government jobs.

A teenage girl was injured when she fell off of a moving golf cart in a housing development west of Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that just before 12:40 p.m. Thursday a 13-year-old boy was driving a golf cart in the area of Scenic Slope Road and West Slope Road when a number of young teens jumped on the back.

As the golf cart was in motion on Scenic Slope Road, a 14-year-old girl fell off the back and began to convulse, Melander said. Once the girl was able to speak, she complained of pain in her right shoulder and right hip. She also sustained road rash, Melander said.

The girl was transported by EMS with what at this time appears to be non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The boy who was driving said he didn't realize so many people were on the back, according to Melander.

Salina car stolen along I-135 found; catalytic converter missing

A Salina man was arrested after he allegedly was seen on surveillance video taking another man's wallet from a convenience store counter.

A 41-year-old Salina man told police that on Monday he accidently left his wallet on the counter at Casey's, 725 W. Schilling Road, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The wallet contained $2,300 in cash and various identification and financial cards.

Surveillance video from Casey's showed a man in a T-Mobile work shirt take the wallet from the counter. The man in the video also had on a work nametag with the name "Antoine" on it, Forrester said.

Officers went to T-Mobile and made contact with a man identified as Antoine Blue, 34, of Salina. Blue was arrested on the requested charge of felony theft, Forrester said.

According to Forrester, Blue's wife turned in the wallet, which appeared to be intact except for $550 in cash that was missing.

LAWRENCE — Thirty-one University of Kansas undergraduate students have recently received the prestigious&nbsp;<a href="https://exchanges.state.gov/us/program/benjamin-gilman-international-scholarship-program" target="_blank">Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship</a>&nbsp;to study or intern abroad in countries around the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gilman Scholars are selected from a group of highly competitive undergraduates for study abroad funding. Scholars receive up to $5,000, or up to $8,000 if also a recipient of the Gilman Critical Need Language Award, to apply toward their study abroad or internship abroad program costs. The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Gilman scholarship program.

Since the program’s inception in 2001, more than 34,000 Gilman Scholars from all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories have studied or interned in more than 155 countries around the globe.&nbsp;

A key goal of the Gilman scholarship program is to provide opportunities for students to study abroad regardless of socioeconomic constraints. Through its 21 years in operation, the program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing study and internship opportunities in countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study.
