A Wichita woman was injured in a single-vehicle rollover accident west of Salina early Saturday morning.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday, a 2002 Honda Civic driven by Destiney McPhaul, 24, of Wichita, was westbound on Kansas Highway 140 when the car went into the ditch and rolled. The wreck occurred approximately 0.2 of a mile east of S. Burma Road.

McPhaul sustained several lacerations and bruises and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1-8 p.m. Monday that includes Marion County.

Heat index values up to 105 are expected.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Witnessing a homeless man or woman pushing a cart with all of their belongings raises a question in a teacher’s heart: could the right teacher at the right time in their early schooling have made a difference in their fate today? Teaching is a compassionate profession.&nbsp; Teaching is not for everyone. Teaching is for those who care. I also told my student teachers that they must have a little “cop” in them in order maintain classroom order. –To corral the misbehaving pupil. –To provide fairness and insist their students are also fair to each other. While we reward good behavior, we must also curtail bad student behavior with appropriate discipline. But all of that is focused on helping everyone have a better future life. –Increasing their chances of success. –Decreasing their likelihood of becoming a homeless vagrant. &nbsp;

Putting a gun into a teacher’s hand goes against all that a teacher is trying to do. Teachers are nearly second parents in caring for our students and we are therefore protective of them. When the jetliners hit the Twin Towers during the 9/11 attack, teachers heroically shepherded their students out of the school building next door while burning debris fell all around. But we must not ask a teacher--whose job is synonymous with “compassion”--to add “destruction of life.” We live under the false belief that we can kill another person and walk away unchanged. No, it is traumatic.

Many Americans live with the belief that police have to shoot people all of the time. When we watch televised police dramas, we see someone shot nearly every episode.&nbsp; And in all the movies where John Wayne and Sylvester Stallone and Clint Eastwood were killing “bad guys” all the time, they walked away to a happy life. According to Pew Research, 83 percent of citizens estimate that an average police officer has had to fire his or her police gun at least once in their career, outside of training on the gun range. The true figure is that only 27 percent have ever fired their gun on duty in their life, and most of those instances were not necessarily targeting a person or killing them. For officers who had previously served in the military, that figure rose to 31 percent. And when they separated out female officers in similar on-the-line assignments, only 11 percent had fired their gun on duty in their career.

That means that nearly three-fourths of police hang up their gun belt at the end of their career without ever having fired at a person. For the much smaller percent who have had to shoot a criminal and in some cases kill them, the trauma to the officer can last a long time. Recognizing the effect of that death on the victim’s relatives makes such actions less black-and-white. Just as there is traumatic stress among soldiers who come home from having killed the “enemy,” police can suffer as well.

Ironically, Clint Eastwood, the cool unconcerned hero of many Westerns, directed and acted in the movie “Unforgiven.” His character states the reality that “It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.”

But few police dramas, with the exception of some recent “Blue Bloods” episodes, reveal the genuine stress that many police feel after killing a person, no matter the person’s level of villainy. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A 2018 Gallup poll found that 73 percent of American teachers did not want teachers to carry guns in school. Only 18 percent were willing themselves to carry a gun. That 2018 poll also found 58 percent of teachers believed that having teachers or staff carry guns would actually decrease safety in schools by making more guns available in the school setting for student accidental access. By 2019, another survey of over 2,900 teachers around the nation found 95.3 percent believed teachers should not carry guns in the classroom.

On April 22, 2020, the RAND Corporation released a report “The Effects of Laws Allowing Armed Staff in K–12 Schools.” They found “As of January 1, 2020, 28 states allow schools to arm teachers or staff in at least some cases or as part of a specific program.” They scanned all valid studies up to that time and “...found no qualifying studies showing that laws allowing armed staff in K–12 schools increased any of the eight outcomes we investigated,” outcomes ranging from preventing suicide to violent crime.

Teachers know why they want to teach. Carrying a gun is not one of those reasons.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Dickinson County Register of Deeds office will be closed Wednesday and Thursday so staff can attend the Kansas Register of Deeds Association Seminar in Salina.

The seminar gives local staff an opportunity to ask questions and learn more information on various topics, including details about e-filing and vendors.

“It will give us a chance to compile information on e-file companies, among other things, and what vendors will be able to offer that may be beneficial to the office and county,” explained Rose Johns, Dickinson County Register of Deeds.

The seminar also provides an opportunity to meet other Kansas Register of Deeds so local staff can “put faces with the names,” Johns said.

“I realize that the closing of the office will be an inconvenience to the public,” Johns continued. “But the seminar is an opportunity for our office to get some education and much needed information that will help us operate in a more proficient manner.”

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The academic honors' dean's list for the Spring 2022 semester has been announced by Donna Hedgepath, Campbellsville University's provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Students named to Campbellsville University's Dean's List for spring 2022 include&nbsp;Breanna Miles, of Chapman.

The academic honors' list recognizes students who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or above for the semester with a course load of at least 12 hours. The Spring 2022 academic honors' list includes a total of 795 students, with 371 named to the President's List for achieving a 4.0 grade point average, and 424 named to the Dean's List for achieving a 3.5 to 3.99 GPA.

Miles on Campbellsville University's spring Dean's List

Salina Media Connection (SMC) earned a Best of the Midwest Achievement Award, one of the top festival awards during the recent annual 2022 MediaFest in Madison, Wis.

The award was for a program series of three short videos produced through a Kansas Beats the Virus grant received from the Kansas Leadership Center to promote&nbsp;COVID-19 awareness and vaccinations. The short films were titled Kansas Beats the Virus: VAXX: Origins, Corona Origins and Mask Origins.

One judge commented "Really creative&nbsp;way to promote Covid safety. I was definitely riveted to the screen. I think the throwback nature of the programs was really clever."&nbsp; Another said&nbsp; "These are really creative. Overall this was really creative and an important topic to cover." Another said " Interesting way to reach out about getting vaccinated. Old school filming, narration, and characters to collect were kind of neat to see." The video&nbsp;series program involved three short one-minute videos covering Covid awareness topics created by Paul Kirkwood. In addition, the grant also involved four collectible baseball-type cards developed by local educator and artist Noah Wellbrock-Talley, A local USD 305 student provided a design for one card.

Salina Central releases names of students named to honor roll

Guest speaker Michael Knapp currently serves as the Chief of Historical Services for the American Battle Monuments Commission. His presentation will briefly discuss the agency's history and mission. Additionally, Knapp will outline the intersecting paths of Pershing and Eisenhower with the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Knapp previously served as a historian with the Contemporary Studies Branch of the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, DC, and was detailed as a museum liaison officer to the U.S. Department of Defense Vietnam War Commemoration Commission. He is the co-author of The Organization and Insignia of the American Expeditionary Force, 1917-1923, and has contributed to The United States in the First World War: An Encyclopedia, The Historical Dictionary of the U.S. Army, 100 Greatest Military Photographs, and World War One Vault.

Dangerous heat indices across much of state Sunday

Can one man’s journey change history?&nbsp;

“Yes,” said writer and historian Deb Goodrich. She points to William Becknell’s 1821 trade mission to Mexico as a pivotal point in the history of the west. Now she is leading the effort to commemorate the bicentennial of the Santa Fe Trail.&nbsp;

Goodrich is a journalist, historian and television host. A Virginia native, she was a student at Washburn University who became enamored of western history. She is now historian in residence at Fort Wallace in Kansas. Among many other things, she chairs the Santa Fe Trail 200 committee, which is commemorating the bicentennial of this historic trail.&nbsp;

“In 1821, change was racing across the west like a prairie fire,” Goodrich said. “Missouri was a brand new state and Mexico was a newly liberated nation.”&nbsp;

Missouri was also in a financial depression. A Missouri salt-maker named William Becknell was one of those in financial trouble. He was on the verge of going to jail because he could not pay his debts.&nbsp;

In September 1821, Becknell and five companions headed west to hunt and trade horses and mules. They traveled hundreds of miles by horseback through challenging territory. Nearly two-and-a-half months later, they arrived in Santa Fe.&nbsp;

Their timing was good. Since Mexico had just gained its independence from Spain, its citizens were eager to trade with the neighboring country to the north, unlike the Spanish conquistadors. According to legend, Becknell’s trade mission was so successful that when he returned to Missouri, he slashed open a rawhide bag of silver coins and spilled onto the cobblestone street. Observers literally saw the riches resulting from this trading relationship, and others joined in.&nbsp;

“Becknell’s legendary trip inaugurated a new era in American and Mexican history,” Goodrich said. “While William Becknell’s successful trip into Mexico was history-making, it was only opening the door.” Eventually this region would become the state of New Mexico.&nbsp;

There were also consequences for the indigenous tribes and the military in this region.&nbsp;&nbsp;Native tribes were displaced. Military posts were established, including Fort Riley, Fort Larned and more.&nbsp;

This was the beginning of what would become the great prairie highway now known as the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. In 1825, George Sibley surveyed what would become known as the “highway between nations.”&nbsp;

By 1855, the value of traded goods on the trail was estimated at $5 million. This route of commerce functioned for nearly 60 years until the coming of the railroad. Modern highways continue as a route of travel and commerce.&nbsp;

The Santa Fe Trail Association is a non-profit organization that was established in 1986 to protect, preserve and promote the historic trail. Congress designated the Santa Fe Trail as a national historic trail in 1987. Joanne VanCoevern of Salina is the executive director of the SFTA. The SFTA is commemorating the bicentennial of the trail from 2021 to 2025.&nbsp;

“Continuing our official commemoration through 2025 gives us the opportunity to build on the relationships we have established, to expand our audience and share stories on a deeper level,” Goodrich said. Local chapters of the SFTA in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico promote the trail in their regions. Notably, more of the trail is found in Kansas than any other state.&nbsp;

Kansas Tourism has developed promotional information about attractions and museums related to the trail in communities such as Olathe, Fairway, Gardner, Leavenworth, Council Grove, Great Bend, Lyons, Dodge City, Ulysses, Elkhart; and&nbsp;rural&nbsp;communities such as Pawnee Rock, population 193 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;
