Blood donations decline in late spring and early summer – especially during holiday weeks, like Memorial Day and Independence Day – but the need for blood and platelet transfusions doesn’t take a summer break, according to the American Red Cross. Generous blood and platelet donors are critically important in ensuring lifesaving care is available the moment patients need it.

The schedule for the Salina Community Blood Drive at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue, is as follows.

A person wanted in connection to a late Monday pursuit in north Salina also is believed to be connected to an early Tuesday morning attempted felony theft in the western part of the city.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. Monday, a patrol officer who was southbound in the 500 block of N. Ohio Street saw a northbound SUV with very dim headlights, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer reported that as the SUV got closer, it quickly swerved toward the center lane in the direction of the patrol vehicle before continuing northbound and speeding off. As it passed the patrol vehicle, the officer noticed that the SUV didn't have working tail lights.

The officer turned around to attempt to catch up with the SUV, identified as a silver 2002 GMC Envoy, and finally did so traveling westbound in the 600 block of E. Pacific Avenue, where a traffic stop was attempted.

The Envoy failed to stop and a pursuit around the north part of the city ensued, however, after the Envoy failed to stop at several stop signs, the officer stopped the pursuit near the intersection of E. Woodland Avenue and N. Fourth Street, Forrester said.

A bit later, the officer located the unoccupied Envoy nearby on Forest Avenue. A witness told police that a White male with no shirt and wearing shorts took off running northbound on Fifth Street.

The officer returned to the Envoy, which had caught on fire, Forrester said. The Salina Fire Department arrived and extinguished the blaze.

Police spoke with the registered owner of the Envoy and believe they may know who the driver was, Forrester said.

Then, at approximately 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, someone attempted to steal a four-wheeler from the backyard of a residence in the 1400 block of Cheyenne Avenue in west Salina. 

The 19-year-old owner woke up when someone opened the metal gate at the back of the yard. Forrester said the owner reported seeing a White male who he has known for several years attempting to push a 2001 Yamaha 660 Raptor out of the yard. The four-wheeler is valued at $2,000.

The suspect took off before police arrived, however, he is believed to be the same person who was driving the SUV in the north Salina pursuit, Forrester said. 

Warrants are being requested for attempted felony theft and criminal trespassing, Forrester said.

Police looking for person believed connected to 2 cases

A local woman was cited for failure to yield after a two-vehicle injury wreck Monday morning in central Salina.

Samantha Panuco, 25, of Salina, attempted to turn left onto E. Crawford Street from Elmore Drive in a 2017 GMC Acadia when the vehicle struck a westbound 2015 Mazda 6 driven by Tracie Smucker, 54, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The wreck occurred at approximately 7:10 a.m. Monday.

Smucker possibly received injuries from the air bag deployment, Forrester said. 

Both vehicles received front-end damage and were towed.

Forrester said Panuco was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way.

Driver cited for two-vehicle wreck in central Salina Monday

UPDATE 5:30 p.m. Tuesday: According to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalineCountyKS">Saline County Kansas Facebook page</a>, Old 40 Highway has been reopened and gas and electricity have been restored to the area.

UPDATE noon Tuesday:&nbsp;Law enforcement authorities were on the scene of a single-vehicle accident in Saline County. Old 40 Highway between N. Ohio Street and N. Simpson Road was shut down when the vehicle struck a power pole and gas line, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

A vehicle accident has caused damage to a natural gas pipeline on E. Old Highway 40 east of Salina. 

Kansas Gas and the Salina Regional HazMat Team - a part of the Salina Fire Department - are on the scene. The road is closed at the Simpson and Old 40 intersection until further notice.

Residents within a one-mile radius north and east of the area are encouraged to evacuate their homes until further notice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State will use the grant to continue Upward Bound services to students at Clay Center Community High School,&nbsp;Clay Center; Ell-Saline Middle-High School,&nbsp;Brookville; Lincoln Junior and Senior High School,&nbsp;Lincoln; and Newton High School,&nbsp;Newton. The services include academic enrichment courses, personal mentoring and coaching, and assistance with college, financial aid and scholarship applications. Upward Bound, one of the federal TRIO programs, is an intensive intervention program that prepares students for higher education.&nbsp;At least two-thirds of the students in each local Upward Bound program are from low-income economic backgrounds and families in which neither parent has a bachelor's degree. K-State has been offering the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/upwardbound/" target="_blank">Upward Bound</a>&nbsp;program for 19 years, with the current program based at&nbsp;<a href="https://salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;in Salina. The program is offered through the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/student-success/" target="_blank">Office of Student Success</a>. Upward Bound programs provide students instruction in literature, composition, mathematics, science and foreign language during the school year and a six-week, campus-based summer experience. Upward Bound also provides intensive mentoring and support for students as they prepare for college entrance exams and tackle admission applications, financial aid packages, and scholarship forms. "Upward Bound affords our students the opportunity to achieve their full potential, exceed expectations and surpass all odds on their journey to success," said Monshonda Booker, K-State Upward Bound director. According to the Department of Education, 86% of Upward Bound participants enroll in postsecondary institutions immediately following high school graduation. In 2021, more than 70,000 students participated in 966 Upward Bound TRIO projects throughout the United States and its territories. "Upward Bound is a powerful way for K-State to live out its mission of&nbsp;service to develop a highly skilled and educated citizenry necessary to advancing the well-being of Kansas, the nation," said&nbsp;Stephanie Bannister, assistant vice provost for student success at K-State. "Our staff and scholars from the Office of Student Success are excited that this new grant continues this outstanding program." In 1964, the Economic Opportunity Act established Upward Bound as a pilot program in response to the War on Poverty. “The 2022 Kansas Notable Books list recognizes 15 books written by Kansans or about Kansas,” said Ray Walling, Acting State Librarian.&nbsp; “Through their work, the authors take readers on a journey through the wetlands of the Cheyenne Bottoms to the baseball fields of the Kansas City Monarchs.&nbsp; Readers can be transported back in time to the 1887 election in&nbsp;Argonia or to the epic battle of twin sisters enabled with superpowers facing a sinister force. This year’s titles include something for everyone.&nbsp; I hope all Kansans will visit their local public library to check out these wonderful titles.”

Each year, the Kansas Notable Books list features 15 books, published during the previous calendar year, which are about or set in Kansas, or written by a Kansas author. This year’s selection committee includes representatives of public, university, and school libraries, teachers, academics, and writers.

Saline County Commission is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street. The meetings also can be viewed on Saline County’s YouTube channel:

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to conduct a public hearing and then consider adopting a resolution that would allow for the issuing of educational facilities revenue bonds on behalf of Kansas Wesleyan University.

"In 2012, Saline County issued revenue bonds on behalf of Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) to finance various campus improvements. In 2020, the County issued new bonds to refund the 2012 bonds and add money for additional campus improvements. Today, KWU is seeking up to $6.3 million in funding for more campus improvements and is again requesting that the County serve as a conduit issuer to qualify these bonds as tax-exempt under federal law and reduce interest costs," according to information in the commission meeting packet.

There would be no county financial responsibility or liability for the bonds.

"The County will have no financial responsibility or liability for the bonds. This transaction does not present any credit risk to the County, nor does it jeopardize the potential issuance of remaining bonds for the jail project, as those are not anticipated to be issued until the summer of 2023," the meeting packet info noted.

Other items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Hear an update and proposed changes for American Rescue Plan Act funding from County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes.

●Consider a franchise fee for Cox Communications, which has plans to expand its cable television service area in the unincorporated part of the county near Assaria.

●Hear initial 2023 budget requests from Smith-Hanes.

Bonds, jail update, initial 2023 budget requests on county agenda

While recent rainfall has offered Saline County some much-needed moisture, it has also brought with it some unwelcome new residents- mosquitos!

At best mosquito bites cause skin irritation in the form of red bumps and itching, but more serious consequences of some mosquito bites may include transmission of malaria, dengue virus, Zika and West Nile virus. These serious diseases and viruses can be disabling and potentially deadly.

Not only can mosquitoes carry diseases that afflict humans, your furry friends - dogs and horses in particular - can also be seriously harmed by diseases and parasites spread by mosquitoes.

In an effort to help decrease and manage the mosquito population, Saline County offers low-cost Altosid briquets (more commonly known as "mosquito tablets" or "mosquito dunks") to treat your standing water.

Altosid briquets are available at the City-County Building in room 209. The office is open from 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Small Briquets treat up to 75 gallons of water for up to 30 days without rain and are available for $2 each.

Large Briquets treat up to 150 gallons of water for up to 150 days (regardless of rain) and are available for $4 each.&nbsp;&nbsp;

You can help control the mosquito population

●Make Wednesday DUMP DAY and remove standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, etc.

●Empty and change water in rain bird baths, fountains, wading pools, pet bowls, etc.

●Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.

●Keep swimming pool water treated and circulated.

●Stop by the City-County Building Room 209 and get low-cost Altosid briquets to treat your standing water.

●Control mosquito larvae using the appropriate methods for the habitat.

●Control adult mosquitoes using insecticides.

●Cover gaps in walls, doors, and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering.

●Make sure windows and screens are in good working order.

●Completely cover baby carriers and beds with netting - when is necessary and you can do so safely.

●Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. (We know. We know. It's HOT!)

●Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin.

●Stay indoors when possible, especially if there is a mosquito-borne disease warning in effect.

●Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely.

 </figure>Saline CountyThey're baaaack! While recent rainfall has offered Saline County some much-needed moisture, it has also brought with it some unwelcome new residents- mosquitos! At best mosquito bites cause skin irritation in the form of red bumps and itching, but more serious consequences of some mosquito bites may include transmission of malaria, dengue virus, Zika and West Nile virus. These serious diseases and viruses can be disabling and potentially deadly. Not only can mosquitoes carry diseases that afflict humans, your furry friends - dogs and horses in particular - can also be seriously harmed by diseases and parasites spread by mosquitoes. In an effort to help decrease and manage the mosquito population, Saline County offers low-cost Altosid briquets (more commonly known as "mosquito tablets" or "mosquito dunks") to treat your standing water. Altosid briquets are available at the City-County Building in room 209. The office is open from 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Small Briquets treat up to 75 gallons of water for up to 30 days without rain and are available for $2 each. Large Briquets treat up to 150 gallons of water for up to 150 days (regardless of rain) and are available for $4 each.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>You can help control the mosquito population</h2>Remove mosquito habitats●Make Wednesday DUMP DAY and remove standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, etc.●Empty and change water in rain bird baths, fountains, wading pools, pet bowls, etc.●Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.●Keep swimming pool water treated and circulated.Use appropriate pesticides●Stop by the City-County Building Room 209 and get low-cost Altosid briquets to treat your standing water.●Control mosquito larvae using the appropriate methods for the habitat.●Control adult mosquitoes using insecticides.Use structural barriers●Cover gaps in walls, doors, and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering.●Make sure windows and screens are in good working order.●Completely cover baby carriers and beds with netting - when is necessary and you can do so safely.Avoid getting bitten●Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect until 10 p.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

South winds 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

UPDATE: Wind advisory for Lincoln, Ellsworth counties canceled

A local man was arrested on multiple requested charges, including criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, after a traffic stop late Friday afternoon in central Salina.

An officer on patrol saw Logan Bell, 31, of Salina, driving a black Ford Taurus near the intersection of S. Ninth Street and W. Republic Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday. When the officer checked Bell's driver's license status, it was found that the license was suspended, so the officer conducted a traffic stop in the 800 block of S. Ninth Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Also in the car were a female passenger and a five-month-old child in a car seat.

A K-9 was brought in to do a sniff around the car.

During a search of the car, a Glock 19 handgun was found under the child carrier, Forrester said. Bell is on federal probation for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Forrester explained.

Bell was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Salina man faces requested weapon, endangering child charges

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary at a vacant house west of Salina.

Sometime between May 29 and Sunday, someone broke into an unoccupied house in the 1200 block of S. Hohneck Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. Someone broke a window on the house and stole a large portable heater.

Additionally, someone pried open the door of a Morton Building on the property and stole some welding equipment, grilling equipment, and a four-inch Milwaukee grinder, he said. Additionally, the wheels from a 2004 Buick Regal that was in the yard were stolen.

The owner of the property, a man from Salina, was working to get to the sheriff's office a comprehensive list of what was stolen and how much the stolen items are worth, Soldan said.
