Heat advisories and an excessive heat watch have been issued in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon-8 p.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 105 degrees are expected.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Local, area students earn academic honors at Cloud County

Forty-one Kansas Gas customers were affected when a single-vehicle wreck damaged a natural gas pipeline east of Salina Tuesday morning.

Public Relations Manager Liza Steger said the Kansas Gas pipeline has been repaired and a portable regulator station installed. 

"The car hit a power pole and hit a Kansas Gas Service regulator station as well as it took out the barricade that was adjacent to that area," Steger told Salina Post.

Gas was shut off for about three and a half hours, but has been restored to all customers.

"Our team was able to conduct the repairs needed within this time to ensure gas service could be restored promptly," Steger noted.

The single-vehicle wreck occurred Tuesday morning in the vacinity of E. Old Highway 40 and N. Simpson Road. Just after the accident, part of Old Highway 40 was shut down and residents within a one-mile radius north and east of the area were encouraged to evacuate their homes until the pipeline could be repaired, according to information from Saline County.

Gas service restored after pipeline damaged in single-vehicle wreck

Kansas wheat producers are in the cab and cutting now across a wide swath of the state, battling short, thin stands as they work to maximize the bushels delivered to the elevator. Quality continues to be a welcome positive note, with protein reflecting drought stress and test weights heavy.

“Moisture has been pretty dry; the hot winds took care of that,” said Levi Benjamin, who leads the Bucklin branch of Offerle Coop Grain &amp; Supply Co.

With no rain in the forecast, he expects harvest to go quick in Edwards County. Bucklin took in the first load of wheat on Monday, taking 40,000 bushels thus far. Moisture has been around 9 percent. Protein has been pretty variable, ranging from 10.5 to 14 percent. Test weights are averaging a little over 60 pounds per bushel, thanks to a couple of inches of rain that arrived too late to help yields but did improve ending quality.

Benjamin noted the wheat is coming in first from continuous wheat fields, which producers expected to be a disaster after the area did not receive any moisture to speak of all late fall and winter.

“I always say, we grow better wheat in a dry year,” said Sumner County farmer Tim Turek. “We needed just one rain, and we would’ve hit it. But that was the one we missed.”

Turek was harvesting 40 bushel-per-acre wheat on Wednesday south of Wellington, which he said, “isn’t bad for as thin as it is.” At the end of March, that field looked like it was going to yield 20 bushels better, but it didn’t rain when the wheat was heading. The rain did come during grain fill, which helped finish off the wheat.

The field of AP EverRock, planted after corn, will be saved for seed wheat. Forty bushels per acre will likely be Turek’s farm average this year, although the wheat planted behind soybeans is not looking as good.

Harvest started for Turek on June 12, but it will go faster than most with the short, thin wheat, expecting to finish up in about two weeks. Despite the weather challenges that are limiting yield, the quality is excellent. Test weights are averaging 60 pounds per bushel and better, and proteins are ranging from 11.5 percent up to 14 percent.

His daughter Paige just came back to join him last fall as the fifth generation on the farm. With a lot of acres of wheat to cut between Tim, his brother and his father, they have a custom cutter who will be arriving at the end of this week to help them wrap up harvest.

Farmers in Kingman and Sedgwick counties are also waiting for custom crews, with about half still to arrive. Some farmers have opted to harvest their own wheat, however, due to the extreme increases in fuel costs.

Even with the wait, all 10 locations of Garden Plain Co-op received wheat by June 13, having taken in the first load just two days earlier around the Belmont location, according to Shawn Talkington, operations manager.

Area yields are expected to average below the five-year average, depending on location and how much rainfall they received. Test weights are averaging above 62 pounds per bushel, and proteins are north of 13 percent for many loads. Talkington said the straw height is very short, noting that in about half the territory the wheat is only boot high.

SY Rugged has been a good variety, yielding up to 10 bushels per acre above other varieties. Double-cropped wheat is yielding 10 bushels less than fallow fields. CoAxium varieties have also been great for the area, controlling rye and making a noticeable decrease in dockage.

Although yields are down this year, acres were up, so they are expecting to bring in about five million bushels, which would be close to their five-year average. By the end of the day Tuesday, they were about 10 percent of the way done.

Day 3: Kansas wheat harvest report

An organization that has ministered to the physical and spiritual needs of Salinans for 125 years plans to celebrate that milestone achievement in July.

The Salina Salvation Army will be celebrating 125 years in the city on July 22-24.

The weekend celebration is scheduled to begin with a free concert at 5 p.m. July 22 at the Eric Stein Stage in Oakdale Park. Headlining will be contemporary Christian group Christafari. Local artists Dru Davis, Cash Hollistah, and Into Forever, also are scheduled to perform.

On July 23, the free fun continues with a huge block party in and around the Salina Salvation Army Community Center, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Those planning to participate include the Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff's Office, Salina Fire Department, and a number of local non-profit organizations.

Games and face painting are planned. The Armed Forces Obstacle Course is scheduled to be there, as are five bounce houses and activities from Bounce-A-Roos. Hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be served. Additionally, tours of the local Salvation Army facility will be given.

July 24 is scheduled as a time to worship with The Salvation Army during an outdoor service at 10:45 a.m. Territorial and divisional leaders will be present along with The Salvation Army Divisional Brass Band, according to information from the local organization.

Salina Fire Department's first arson K-9 dies

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court reappointed four members to the Kansas Sentencing Commission.

The reappointed members will serve two-year terms ending June 30, 2024. They are:

●District Judge W. Lee Fowler, who serves in the 5th Judicial District, composed of Chase and Lyon counties. 

●Chief Judge Benjamin Sexton, who serves in the 8th Judicial District, composed of Dickinson, Geary, Marion, and Morris counties. 

●Spence Koehn, court services specialist in the Kansas judicial branch Office of Judicial Administration.

The Legislature established the commission to evaluate sentencing guidelines and advise and recommend changes to the secretary of corrections and legislators. The chief justice or a designee of the Supreme Court serves on the 17-member commission, and the Supreme Court also appoints two district court judges and a court services officer. Other commission members represent the attorney general, public defenders, defense counsel, district attorneys, the secretary of corrections, the state parole board, community corrections, legislators, and the general public.

Four of the tornadoes were violent F4s. Among them were two that struck north-central and central Kansas. 

An F4 that struck Beloit had a track only three miles long, while the F4 that struck McPherson had a track six miles long. 

In all, the tornadoes caused $242 million damage. At the time, it was the third largest tornado outbreak on record spanning a two day period.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MCPHERSON - The McPherson Fire Department is gearing up for the 2022 edition of Fireworks with a Fireman.

The event is scheduled for 4-10 p.m. June 30 at 214 E. Euclid Street in McPherson, and will feature a musical performance by Sam Unruh.

Additionally, there will be fire detector and extinguisher training, a fire demonstration, and fireworks safety training.

In addition to the fireworks, Fireworks with a Fireman will include a bounce house, a dunk tank, a magician, food trucks, Domino's pizza, and more, according to information on the McPherson Fire Department Facebook page.

All donations will benefit the McPherson Fire Department.

These signs cause problems as crews work to keep these public areas mowed and properly maintained.

●State law prohibits political campaign signs or billboards from being placed on state right of way

●Signs causing an obstruction to maintenance crews will be removed without notice.﻿

Saline County asks residents to be mindful of sign placement

Two rounds of isolated strong storms are possible this evening and again overnight. 

Since storm coverage will be isolated, not everyone in the highlighted areas will see a storm. However, any storm that develops may be able to produce up to quarter-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

An $1,100 electric bicycle was stolen Tuesday afternoon from a south Salina sporting goods store.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that at approximately 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, a man in his 50s who had been walking around looking at various items took a black 20-inch Swagtron EB8 electric bicycle from Dunham's Sports, 2259 S. Ninth Street. The man was reported to have pushed the bicycle out into the Central Mall and then disappeared.

Forrester said the man was described as being in his 50s and wearing a ballcap, blue jeans, and a facemask with a skull on it.

A motorcycle driver was transported to the hospital Tuesday morning after the three-wheeled cycle was struck by a pickup just south of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Mike Ascher said this morning that Sarah Whitenack, 38, was northbound on S. Ohio Street, just south of E. Schilling Road on a three-wheeled Harley-Davidson motorcycle when the motorcycle was struck by a southbound 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Gabriel Luthi, 18, of Bennington, that was attempting to turn left at the construction site on the southeast corner of E. Schilling Road and S. Ohio Street. 

The wreck occurred at approximately 7:41 a.m. Tuesday.

Ascher said he believed Whitenack had been thrown from the motorcycle. She was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with undisclosed injuries.

The investigation into the wreck is ongoing, Ascher said.

Police are looking for a pickup that was stolen early this morning in north Salina after it was left unlocked with the keys inside.

William Suenram, 65, of Salina, told police that his son had borrowed his red 1999 Dodge Ram pickup, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

According to Forrester, the son left the pickup parked in the 500 block of N. 13th from 12:30-2:30 a.m. Wednesday while he went to a local bar on N. Santa Fe Avenue. The doors were left unlocked and the keys were left inside the pickup. When he returned at 2:30 a.m., the pickup was gone.

The pickup had a topper on the back, a large dent in the rear bumper, and a Kansas license plate of 172PBG, Forrester said. 

Additionally, approximately $500 worth of power tools were inside the pickup, he said.

LAWRENCE — The Department of Chemistry at the University of Kansas recognized the academic, research and teaching achievements of department majors by awarding over $170,000 in awards and scholarships at the Awards and Graduation Recognition Ceremony on May 7. In addition to presenting awards and scholarships, students graduating with bachelor’s degrees in chemistry were recognized.

Special guests at the ceremony — the first in-person student award gathering since 2019 — included KU Endowment donors, Chemistry Alumni Advisory Board (CAAB) members, emeritus faculty, chemistry department staff and faculty, and friends and family of those being honored.

Undergraduate scholarships and awards were presented to chemistry majors to recognize their academic and research achievements for the 2021-2022 academic year. Chemistry graduate students also earned awards and scholarships to recognize their contributions to academics, research and/or teaching.

With over $170,000 provided in scholarships and awards, 2022 marks the highest amount awarded in the past five years. In addition to the spring awards, the department announced the 2022 Chemistry Summer Scholars, a program in its third year that provides both graduate and undergraduates with a summer stipend to focus on research. The fund is made possible through gifts made via KU Endowment.
