The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1-8 p.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 110 are expected.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Thacher Road between Ohio Street and Crystal Springs Road will be closed to traffic beginning Monday for road upgrade. 

Weather permitting the roadway should be opened by July 8, 2022. 

 Local traffic is asked to find alternate routes around the project area.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Catholic Diocese of Salina schools earn accreditation as a group

Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson has announced that he will retire this fall.&nbsp;

A news release from the City of Salina noted that Nelson would be retiring from law enforcement and that his last day would be Sept. 2.

In a news release from the Salina Police Department, Nelson said, "Since December 2, 2013, I have had the distinct honor and privilege of being the Chief of Police for the city of Salina. I have served with a team of remarkable men and women who daily demonstrate threir dedication and commmitment to the residents of our city.

"After more than 37 years of law enforcement service in three communities, I have decided it is time to retire from law enforcement. After conferring with City Manager Mike Schrage, my last day as chief will be September 2, 2022," Nelson continued. "The primary reason for this decision is family-related, as my wife and I wish to be closer to our children and our only surviving parent, all of who reside in Missouri. This was a very difficult decision and one we have anguished over for months."

Schrage said, "I have immense respect for all of the men and women that serve in law enforcement. It is a noble profession, an immense commitment and an invaluable community service all of which continue to be underscored nearly daily by events unfolding nationally and regionally. Brad’s 35+ year career in law enforcement is a testament to his personal commitment to the communities that he has served and I greatly appreciate all that he has done for the Salina community and our organization. I certainly wish him well in his retirement."

MCPHERSON — McPherson Mayor Tom Brown announced this week that a country artist with five number one hits will be in the Light Capital for a concert next month.

"We have on July 23 at 8 p.m., Sara Evans," Brown said. "This will be held at McPherson College at the stadium. We'll have a pre-show from a local talent, which is to be announced soon."

The concert is in conjunction with McPherson’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.

"It will be free," Brown said. "We'll work out how we're going to have tickets or not have tickets to get an estimation on the crowd."

There will also be food trucks and alcohol available on the McPherson College campus between the stadium and Miller Library prior to the concert.

Overnight rainfall dampens much of area again

Police are investigating the theft of a recreational vehicle, a motorcycle trailer, and a pickup at multiple times and locations in Salina.

Jody Meyer, 36, of Salina, told police that sometime between May 18 and Thursday, someone stole a tan 1985 Southwind RV that had "Browning" in the back window from where it was parked in the 300 block of E. Claflin Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The RV was valued at $2,000.

The RV was used to store miscellaneous tools, which were valued at $4,000, Forrester said.

Additionally, a black four-foot by four-foot enclosed motorcycle trailer that was hooked to the RV also was stolen. It contained some tires and was valued at $400.

At that same time, Meyer also told police that approximately three weeks earlier, someone stole his black 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche from the backyard of a friend's residence in the 100 block of S. Phillips Avenue. The pickup, which had a chameleon paint job on the hood, was valued at $4,000. It had a temporary tag of C318082, Forrester said.

A witness reported seeing a White woman with purple or reddish hair and a heavyset white man in a white van tow the RV and trailer away from where they were parked in the 300 block of E. Claflin Avenue, Forrester said.

Additionally, another witness reported seeing a White woman in a white pickup tow the Avalanche from the backyard in the 100 block of S. Phillips Avenue, he said.

Salina TechSalina Area Technical College has announced its honor roll for the spring semester of 2022.The honor roll includes two levels. The President’s Honor Roll is for students who were enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of classes, and had a GPA of 4.0. The Dean’s Honor Roll is for students enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99. Salina Tech announces spring honor roll

JEWELL COUNTY—A Kansas teen was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Thursday in Jewell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Nissan Frontier driven by Kyler J Burks, 16, Jewell, was northbound on Kansas 14 four miles south of Jewell.

The pickup drifted into the west ditch. The driver tried to overcorrect back onto the roadway. The pickup rolled and the driver was ejected.&nbsp;

EMS transported Burks to Via Christi. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
