Today let’s learn about a cross-section of agriculture. Let’s talk to a cattle feeder, a timber producer, a crop farmer, a stocker cattle grower, and a beef seedstock producer.&nbsp;

To cover all of these, we could bring together a panel of people from across the state. Or, we could meet a single innovative family which has diversified into multiple segments of the agriculture industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dirck and Natalie Hoagland of J&amp;N Ranch are owners of the family operation that includes multiple components of agriculture. It began in 1866 when Dirck’s ancestors homesteaded near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Tecumseh. The population of Tecumseh and the nearby areas is 696 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

“We still own part of that original farm ground,” Dirck Hoagland said. Known as the Decker Farm, it is mostly native prairie that is now leased to local producers.&nbsp;

Hoagland’s parents, Joe and Norma Hoagland, started raising registered cattle in 1978. In 1985, they bought a ranch along the Missouri River near Leavenworth and moved their cowherd to that site. Using their initials, the place was named J&amp;N Ranch. Later, the Hoaglands acquired the Gunbarrel Ranch in Wabaunsee County and the F. Morgan Feedyard near Leavenworth.&nbsp;

Dirck earned a baseball scholarship and became a pitcher at Tulane University, even pitching in the College World Series. After graduation, he moved to Brussels, Belgium, where he earned an MBA before coming back to the states. He met and married Natalie, who had majored in education at K-State. They have two boys, ages 10 and 8.&nbsp;

Hoagland worked in the corporate world in downtown Kansas City for five years but found he missed ranch life. 

“I was always drawn to the ranch,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hoagland decided to leave corporate life and move back into the day-to-day operations of J&amp;N Ranch.&nbsp;

The main J&amp;N Ranch is located along the Missouri River near Leavenworth. This includes timbered hills and productive river bottom ground. The land includes fine hardwood trees that are a source of timber harvesting.&nbsp;

J&amp;N Ranch has native stands of oak, ash and walnut trees along three miles of land along the Missouri River bluffs.&nbsp;

The ranch’s river bottom farm ground is a fertile location to produce corn, soybeans, and hay. This is also where they develop and evaluate their bulls and heifers to be sold or retained. That provides a complementary setting to the open rangeland of the Wabaunsee County ranch.&nbsp;

“We work the two ranches together,” Hoagland said. 

The cowherd will go to pasture at Gunbarrel Ranch for the summer and then come back to Leavenworth for the winter.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We have more grass in Wabaunsee County than we need for our cowherd, so we use that extra capacity to run steers as a stocker operation or for a bred heifer program, depending on the market,” Hoagland said.&nbsp;

The registered cowherd is a source of bulls and heifers for other cattlemen. Production sales are held twice yearly, plus semen is available. The Hoaglands have done pioneering work in the development of the Black Hereford breed. The F. Morgan Feedyard for finishing cattle is located near the home ranch as well.&nbsp;

All of that means that the Hoaglands are active in every segment of the beef production system, from cow-calf to stocker cattle to finished cattle. “We’re involved in all segments of the industry, and what we’ve learned from that helps shape our production system,” Hoagland said. “I want to be in the shoes of someone in every step of the way so we can see what works best.”&nbsp;

For example, observing how cattle perform in the feedyard helps assure that the Hoaglands raise the right kind of genetics in the cattle seedstock that they produce. “We want to raise cattle that work for producers in the real world,” Hoagland said.&nbsp;

NOW THAT'S RURAL: Dirck Hoagland, J&N Ranch, Part 1

Whether for the first-time air traveler or a veteran, airline workers at the Salina Regional Airport’s M.J. Kennedy Air Terminal are proud to serve most any need.

“There are hundreds of destinations just a connection away, and for the small-town friendliness and feel that you get at Salina, it’s a hidden gem,” said Steph Flanagan, general manager of the SkyWest Salina station. 

The SkyWest staff operates United Express flights Salina to Chicago O’Hare and Denver International airports.

The Denver hub connects to 165 destinations, from Albuquerque to Williston Basin (North Dakota), not to mention Honolulu; Aspen, Colorado; Boston; Palm Springs, California; New York City; and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. International connections are to 16 destinations across eight countries, including Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, The Bahamas, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras and Belize.

Chicago connections include 157 domestic destinations from Key West, Florida, to Fargo, North Dakota, Phoenix, Louisville, Tampa, Tulsa, and Tucson. There is a connection to Yellowstone International Airport in Bozeman, Montana, along with Detroit Metro Airport and Portland International. Once at O’Hare, there are also 43 international destinations across 27 countries, from Aruba to London, Mexico, Italy (Rome and Milan), Iceland, Israel, Ireland, and Switzerland, just to name a few.

All of the above journeys can originate from SLN, nestled near the intersection of Interstate highways 70 and 135 in north-central Kansas, in a relatively small town with big ambitions, loaded with friendly folks aiming to please the flying public.

“For the first-timers, this is a traveling 101 station where they can get their feet wet without being overwhelmed. We’re the people to ask. We have maps at the counters to show passengers who are a little more anxious what to expect when they land at Denver or Chicago,” Flanagan said. “We say ‘Ok, you’re going to land at this gate and this is how you’re going to get to your next gate.’ We can take the time to see where their connections are and help them navigate the process.”

With free parking — space is expanding as well — plenty of room to maneuver, and guidance from friendly staff and Transportation Security Administration officials, Flanagan said, air travelers with all ranges of experience can enjoy a smooth transition.

“All travelers appreciate the ease, recognition and quickness,” she said. “I hear all the time how much they love to come home, pick up their bags and go to their cars that have been safe here for weeks. There are so many perks. It’s simple and super convenient.” 

Just remember this. “Always show up an hour before takeoff, and if you’re checking bags, maybe even a bit earlier,” Flanagan said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I talk to a lot of well-meaning parents out there who have a hard time knowing how to best prepare their kids for college. They don’t want to annoyingly overload them with life advice (cue the eye rolls), but they also know it’s their job to give guidance as their teens step into adulthood.

So, what’s the sweet spot? How can you empower your student to feel the freedom they crave while still giving them&nbsp;the guidance they need?

Whether your family is just starting to talk college or your baby is heading off this fall, I’ve found that these three tips help set a solid foundation for your college student (and hopefully they’ll help you have some good conversations too!). Let’s dive in.

Have a plan (even if it’s a loose one).&nbsp;Remember when it was your kid’s first day of school&nbsp;ever? Those wide, excited (possibly terrified) eyes. A backpack that’s way too big bouncing on their backs. With a little guidance from you, I’m guessing your child had a vague idea of what to expect: Arrive at school, learn in class, eat lunch, play, learn some more, and come home. And that direction helped them face the unknown with confidence.

Well, they may not be itty bitty anymore, but this is still true: Your kids need a plan. Up until this point, most students have basically had their lives planned for them, so they’ll need your help thinking about the future, considering the consequences of their decisions, and mapping out how they reach goals.

This includes decisions like picking a school that has their interest of study (that you can afford&nbsp;without&nbsp;loans), choosing a major and understanding what further schooling, internships or potential careers look like, and encouraging them to try new things and get involved socially.

Of course, it’s just the beginning. So, try to have check-ins with your student along the way to make sure their plan still serves whatever their goal has become.

Teach them how to handle money.&nbsp;This is one of the most important things you can do to set your kids up for success. Why? Well, the average student owes over $30,000 in student loans at graduation, and over half of those students are&nbsp;still&nbsp;chained to $20,000 of that debt 20 years later.<a href="https://educationdata.org/average-student-loan-debt">1</a>

Even if your family isn’t able to support your child financially, your child doesn’t have to drown in debt or make bad money decisions. Start by being very clear up front on how (or if) you’ll be helping financially and what they’ll be responsible for. Walk alongside them as they find scholarships, part-time jobs, or work-study programs. And&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/college-budget" target="_blank">teach them how to budget</a>&nbsp;the money they earn from those things.

Make sure they also understand what insurance they need, why they need it, and how to get it. And consistently warn them that&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;is going to try to convince them to borrow money, get the latest credit card, take out a car loan, etc. Talk about the pitfalls of those things and remind them that, regardless of what everyone else is doing, it’s much better to be the weird one paying in full with cash.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Encourage them to surround themselves with solid people. Entrepreneur Jim Rohn famously says, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."&nbsp;And he’s right.&nbsp;You want your student to make good friends, try new things, open their eyes to the world, and have fun. But if this phase of life is about preparing for the future, one of the most important things they can learn is how to find their people and make friendships.

Friendships get you through life. And I’m not talking about the “friends” you follow on social media. I’m talking about the people who know the good stuff&nbsp;and&nbsp;the bad stuff and still show up. It’s so important for your kid to learn how to&nbsp;balance having responsibilities and growing real relationships that build them up rather than tear them down. If you have a shy child, they might need a little more help and guidance. And if your child has a bit of a wild side (God bless them), they may need some direction on how to find good, fun, safe relationships.

Some of my very best friends to this day are friends I made in college. These are the people who encouraged me when I felt like giving up, helped me feel at home when I felt homesick, and made me laugh so hard it hurt. College is an environment that’s challenging and constantly changing, so make sure your kid doesn’t underestimate how important solid relationships are.

When your child goes to college, they get new everything: new schedules, new friends, new financial responsibilities, new social experiences, new freedom. Change is stressful for them&nbsp;and&nbsp;for you. As you prepare your kid for college, remember to have compassion . . . and&nbsp;fun.&nbsp; This is a new and challenging step for your family, but it’s an adventure that should be the start of something incredible!

ELLIS: 3 tips to help your kids crush college

New technological developments are giving 911 dispatch centers more tools to help responders save lives.

One of these tools allows dispatchers to see what is going on at the scene of a call, while another helps pinpoint the location of a caller even when that person has no idea where they are.

In recent months, the Dickinson County Emergency Communication Center began using Prepared Live, a software program that allows dispatchers to see what is happening at the scene by accessing the camera app on the caller’s cell phone – if the caller gives permission to utilize it.

“We ask the caller if they have a smart phone and if they do, we ask permission to send them a link,” explained Dickinson County Emergency Communications Director Emily Nichols. “When they get the link, they answer a few questions, and they have to tap it to give permission and it asks if we can use the camera.”

Once the caller gives permission, 911 can see what the caller is seeing.

“We can flip the camera around. We can block out the screen. We can blur it. We can hide a screen. So, if someone is in a domestic abuse-type situation we can hide it and the people they are with won’t know because the screen is black,” Nichols said.

Once the screen is hidden, the caller is the only one who can unhide it.

The new tool provides situational awareness so first responders know what kind of a scene they are going into.

While the new software has obvious advantages in emergencies, it actually has been used more locally in non-emergent situations, including when residents call in for a controlled burn.

“It allows us to inspect the fire without sending out the fire department to inspect the fire,” Nichols said. “We can see what is being burned and make sure they’re complying with the county’s burn resolution so people aren’t burning what they shouldn’t be burning. Things like trash - which is illegal to burn in Kansas - or construction lumber, processed wood, pallets, 2x4s.

The first time Nichols used the software was during a controlled burn.

With Interstate 70 running through Dickinson County, travelers sometimes get stranded and have no idea where they call for help. Another relatively new program called what3words helps 911 dispatch determine their exact location.

The program uses technology where every section on Earth was plotted into five-foot squares and assigned three words to describe each square. When a caller does not know where they are, 911 dispatch can send the person a text message, the caller clicks on it, the three words pinpointing their location appears, and they tell the dispatcher the three words.

“Then we plug it into our computers and it will tell us exactly where the person is within inches. Each section has its own little dot,” Nichols said.

Initially developed for mountain rescues, it later was decided the application would work for 911 centers across the world.

“They pushed it out for everybody and we integrated it within our phone system,” Nichols said.

Nichols said the program came in handy recently when a driver broke down on the interstate in Lincoln County.

“He didn’t speak any English and the last exit he remembered seeing was in Dickinson County so they sent him to us. Our system allows us to text in any language so I sent him the link, he gave me his three words, and we had his exact location,” Nichols said. “I let the Kansas Highway Patrol know, they got him the help he needed and he was on his way.”

While nearly everyone knows they should call 911 when help is needed, some do not always understand how 911 calls work.

“People from out of state will call 911 and think they will get 911 in the state they live in. But, that’s not the case,” Nichols said. “You get the location you’re in when your phone calls 911.

“That happens a lot. We’re constantly helping people find numbers in other areas,” she explained.

A recent call into Dickinson County’s 911 dispatch came from a trucker who was driving on I-70. He had received a call from his wife in Texas who told him someone was trying to break into their home. He then dialed 911, expecting to reach emergency dispatch in his home area in Texas, but reached Dickinson County, Kan., instead.

“He was furious until we explained it doesn’t work that way. We were able to get him the phone number he needed so he could call his wife and have her call,” Nichols added.

On the other hand, sometimes people may call 911 - expecting to reach their local emergency communications center - and instead, the phone is answered by a dispatcher in another town, county, jurisdiction or even a different state.

“If there’s a cell tower down, that phone call will bounce until it finds an open tower,” Nichols explained. “We have gotten calls from Utah before because the call kept going until it hit a tower.”

When that occurs, Dickinson County dispatchers go on Google or use other resources available to get the caller the help they need.

“It gives them some reassurance that somebody cares enough to help even when they’re several states away,” Nichols said. “And of course, we apologize and explain how they ended up calling Dickinson County, Kansas, when they’re in Utah or wherever.”

Working as a 911 dispatcher is hectic, stressful, rewarding and takes many hours of training.

“Our training is six months long. There’s so much information that gets packed into a dispatcher’s head,” Nichols said.

“There’s a lot of ongoing stress. I encourage them to talk about things,” she said. “They hear some horrible, horrible things. I’ve been on a call listening to someone take their last breath. I’ve had staff members do the same. It’s sad, but at least you are there for them.”

The work life of a dispatcher is 1.7 years. Nichols, who has been with Dickinson County Emergency Communications for 20 years, is an exception. Currently, Nichols is the president of Kansas APCO (Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials).

“I did not expect to stay here as long as I have. I was working in a nursing home, but got really burned out of the medical field. I wanted to do something in law enforcement, but I loved healthcare,” Nichols said, explaining how she ended up working in emergency communications.

“It takes a long time to build up those walls to keep you emotionally separate from everything,” she added. “I encourage my staff to talk to a professional or talk to me. If you hold it in, you burn out.

“There’s a lot of stuff that happens behind the scenes, but you handle it and move on to the next thing.”

 </figure>By KATHY HAGEMAN Dickinson County public information coordinatorNew technological developments are giving 911 dispatch centers more tools to help responders save lives.One of these tools allows dispatchers to see what is going on at the scene of a call, while another helps pinpoint the location of a caller even when that person has no idea where they are.In recent months, the Dickinson County Emergency Communication Center began using Prepared Live, a software program that allows dispatchers to see what is happening at the scene by accessing the camera app on the caller’s cell phone – if the caller gives permission to utilize it.“We ask the caller if they have a smart phone and if they do, we ask permission to send them a link,” explained Dickinson County Emergency Communications Director Emily Nichols. “When they get the link, they answer a few questions, and they have to tap it to give permission and it asks if we can use the camera.”Once the caller gives permission, 911 can see what the caller is seeing.“We can flip the camera around. We can block out the screen. We can blur it. We can hide a screen. So, if someone is in a domestic abuse-type situation we can hide it and the people they are with won’t know because the screen is black,” Nichols said.Once the screen is hidden, the caller is the only one who can unhide it.The new tool provides situational awareness so first responders know what kind of a scene they are going into.While the new software has obvious advantages in emergencies, it actually has been used more locally in non-emergent situations, including when residents call in for a controlled burn.“It allows us to inspect the fire without sending out the fire department to inspect the fire,” Nichols said. “We can see what is being burned and make sure they’re complying with the county’s burn resolution so people aren’t burning what they shouldn’t be burning. New technology aids Dickinson County dispatchers in helping others

A performance by Kansas Wesleyan Music faculty member Gustavo do Carmo is coming up later this week.

The piano recital is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday in University United Methodist Church, 1509 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Admission is open to the public at no charge. 

An active soloist, teacher, jazz, and collaborative pianist, do Carmo has worked with choirs, orchestras, vocalists, instrumentalists and dancers, both in Brazil and the United States. In addition to his position at Kansas Wesleyan University, he is the piano chair for the Salina Symphony Orchestra and collaborative piano chair for the Kansas Music Teachers Association.

His program for Saturday’s recital will include works by C.W. Gluck, Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, Astor Piazzolla, and Manuel de Falla.

Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum has announced the hiring of Caroline de Filippis as community development director and Adam Pracht as marketing and communications director.

 They both started on Tuesday, and join Executive Director Lenora Lynam for the museum’s full-time staff.

“I have enjoyed getting to know Lindsborg,” de Filippis said, “And am excited to be a part of keeping the history and heritage of Lindsborg thriving at the Old Mill.”

De Filippis is passionate about the betterment of society through supporting individuals and organizations to reach their full potential. She has a background in communication marketing and sustainable development with experience working in the public and private sector. She holds a Master of Science degree in strategic leadership towards sustainability and a Master of Arts degree in communication marketing.

She consults organizations part-time and is a member of the Lindsborg Convention and Visitors Bureau committee. Originally from France, de Filippis immigrated to the United States via Scotland with her husband and son a year ago. In her free time, de Filippis enjoys nature-based activities, reading, and experiencing and learning about the community.

Calling Lindsborg home since 2015, Pracht brings to the Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum more than two decades of experience in marketing, public relations, finance, and communications.

“This is an exciting new adventure to start in this role for the museum,” Pracht said. “I’m looking forward to using my experience and expertise to benefit my hometown.”

He was a recipient of Robert F. Kennedy Award for writing about the disadvantaged while he pursued degrees in journalism and Spanish from the University of Kansas. He also holds a Master’s of Education degree in transformative education: higher education administration from McPherson College, where his thesis was a comprehensive marketing plan for the college.

Most recently, he served as marketing and volume purchasing coordinator for Smoky Hill Education Service Center in Salina. He oversaw a complete brand redesign, including a new logo, and helped provide critical supplies to schools and non-profits through the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. His current priority is getting community feedback and to start developing a detailed marketing and communications plan.

Pracht lives with his wife and three children at his Lindsborg home. In his spare time, he also works as an audio producer for the Escape Pod science fiction story podcast, where he has been part of a four-time Hugo Award-nominated team. He’s also an amateur wood carver, singer and musician, and photographer.

Pracht, de Filippis join Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum

Local attorney Ann Zimmerman recently was honored by the Kansas Women Attorneys Association (KWAA).

Zimmerman received the Carol Foreman Medal of Civility during the organization's 33rd annual conference in July. The award is presented to a KWAA member "who has consistently carried out their professional actions and duties as a lawyer or judge with civility, ethics, and respect for others at all times; and who unequivocally serves as an example of dignity and honor to the profession," according to information from the organization.

Zimmerman was described as "someone who exemplifies dignity, honor, and respect, even under great provocation. With calm and respectful diplomacy, Ann has promoted civility and justice throughout the bar while advocating for her clients or her cause."

It was noted that Zimmerman also serves as a member of the Salina USD 305 Board of Education, vice president of the local League of Women Voters chapter, a mediator, a domestic case manager, and a Sunday school teacher. Additionally, she was instrumental in establishing a restorative justice program, Saline Initiative for Restorative Justice, for juvenile offenders that promotes victim restitution and education on civic responsibility as an alternative to prosecutions.

Salina attorney Zimmerman receives award from KWAA

ABILENE - Fate, Fortune, and Providence in the Life of a Leader is the topic of the next virtual Lunch &amp; Learn from the Eisenhower Presidential Library.

Eisenhower Presidential Library's former deputy director, Tim Rives, is the scheduled guest speaker. Rives will look at the alleged role of luck or providence in Eisenhower's career, with a special emphasis on the fate of Ike and the other young men who took the service academy examination with him in 1910.

Rives is currently the deputy director for archival operations for the National Archives and Records Administration in Kansas City, Mo. He is the former deputy director and supervisory archivist of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, an army veteran, and Kansan. He is a graduate of Wichita State University and Emporia State University. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Military History, the Baseball Research Journal and Prologue, among others. His work has been translated into Turkish.

MARION - A minor earthquake shook part of eastern Marion County this morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.1 magnitude quake struck at 8:10 a.m. Saturday southeast of Marion. The quake was centered just north of 160th Street between Zebulon Road and Yarrow Road.

Small earthquake shakes part of Marion County Saturday

TOPEKA — Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.4% in July. This was unchanged from 2.4% in June and a decrease from 3.4% in July 2021.

“Kansas and the U.S. have maintained relatively low unemployment rates so far in 2022, with Kansas remaining at 2.4% and the U.S. reaching 3.5% in July.” said Secretary Amber Shultz.

The jobless rate rose across central Kansas. Saline County's unemployment rate rose from 2.6 percent in June to 3.2 percent in July.&nbsp; Dickinson, Clay, Ottawa, Morris and Barton counties all have unemployment rates higher than 3 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 3,500 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 4,000 over the month, while government decreased by 500.

“July estimates indicate that private sector jobs increased by 4,000 over the month,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “The manufacturing industry added 1,500 jobs with significant gains in durable goods manufacturing. The second largest gains were recorded in trade, transportation, and utilities which contributed 1,000 jobs to the overall private sector growth.”

Since July 2021 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 13,500. This change is due to an increase of 16,700 private sector jobs and a decrease of 3,200 government jobs.

Jobless rates rise across central Kansas in July

Parts of nearly all counties in our area received some measurable precipitation as thunderstorms rolled through central and northcentral Kansas beginning Friday afternoon.

Storms were strong enough to prompt the National Weather Service to issue several severe thunderstorm warnings. Some storms brought with them hail and wind in addition to heavy rain. In the Lincoln area, small hail covered the ground.

Rainfall totals varied from a trace 2.5 miles south-southwest of Inman to 1.65 inches 5.6 miles south of Gypsum.

At the Salina Regional Airport, 1.16 inches of rain was reported for the 24-hour period that ended at 7 a.m. Saturday. Additionally, a wind gust of 52 mph was reported at 4:53 p.m. In southeastern Salina, near the Eagle Radio studios, 0.30 of an inch was reported.
