TOPEKA - The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation is partnering with the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education (KCAE) to host the Fly Kansas Air Tour from Oct. 6 to Oct. 8.

The annual flying celebration promotes aviation and economic growth. More than 30 pilots have already registered to fly the Air Tour this year, visiting nine communities across Kansas during the three-day tour.

“The Fly Kansas Air Tour brings airplanes and exciting career opportunities within reach for over 1,000 children across the state - an experience we hope many will look back on as their first step into aviation,” said Bob Brock, KDOT director of aviation.&nbsp;

The tour focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. Highlights for this year include opportunities for students to learn from pilots, attend community events and view aircraft participating in the tour.

Day 1 (Oct. 6):&nbsp;Wellington, 8:30 a.m.–9:30 a.m.; Pittsburg, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.; Ottawa, 2 p.m. –3:45 p.m.; El Dorado, 5 p.m.–8 p.m.

Fly Kansas Air Tour schedule to include Concordia

Kansas Wesleyan has announced the addition of Joyce Volk to its Advancement staff, effective immediately. Volk joins the staff as a community relations representative.

“Joyce Volk is one of the strongest examples of excellent community relations in the region,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of Advancement and university operations. “Her passion for Salina stands out in the community. When the opportunity came to add her to our team, it was a no-brainer. She will be an excellent representative of KWU!”

Volk, a native Kansan, has spent nearly 30 years in Salina, where she has raised a family and become a community leader. Not only has she enjoyed two successful sales careers – one in radio and one in insurance – but she has served on numerous nonprofit boards in the area, including Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum, Salina Child Care Association, Salina Area United Way and the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. She is the owner of Joyce Volk Insurance Agency, located just across Highland Avenue from the KWU campus.

Volk will be asked to attend community events as a representative of KWU and develop connections for the university with businesses, organizations and individuals in order to advance the university’s mission and strategic plan.

MANHATTAN — Members of a new group of Kansas State University student leaders are sharing their K-State stories around the state. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/connected-cats/" target="_blank">Connected 'Cats</a>&nbsp;are a new class of students who are providing leadership during the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/" target="_blank">presidential community visits</a>. The presidential initiative focuses on the people of Kansas and their communities. Every academic year, K-State is visiting nine communities throughout the state to listen and learn from the Kansans who live there. The next community visit will be Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Ford County.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/schedule/ford-county/" target="_blank">Read more about the Ford County community visit</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/schedule/" target="_blank">see a schedule of future community visits</a>. "The class is filled with great energy as students reflect on their experiences, learn more about the university’s mission and activities, and develop new skills," Tolar said. "Witnessing the depth of connection and commitment our students have to both K-State and their home communities is inspiring." During the planning and implementation of the presidential regional community visits, Connected 'Cats serve in one of two roles: student event leaders and student engagement leaders. For each community visit, student event leaders from that community tell their K-State stories and help to lead the day's events.&nbsp;These students have a personal connection to their assigned sites. Student engagement leaders play an active role in planning and implementing all of the community visits throughout the fall and spring semesters. The organization dedicated to North Town is sponsoring a free tire collection that is open to residents of Saline County.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the vacant lot north of Dairy Queen, 321 N. Ninth Street.

Following are the guidelines for the collection, according to North Salina Community Development.

Salina Area United Way kicked off the 2022-2023 campaign season with its Campaign Kick-off event, United Happy Hour. More than $50,000 was raised throughout the evening thanks to generous donations from&nbsp; community members. 

With the $25,000 match donation from Richard and Sallie Morrison, the grand total of the night came to $75,000 to kick-off campaign fundraising efforts with the 2022- 2023 funded partners.

When community members and businesses made a donation to the 2022-2023 campaign Thursday evening, their donation was matched, up to 50 percent, to make an even greater impact on the nine Salina Area United Way funded partners and the community as a whole. Donations throughout the evening included in-person, text, and online donations, along with Salina Area United Way Workplace Campaign pledge packets from local businesses and organizations.

“We couldn’t be happier with the first ever matching funds at our 2022 Campaign kick-off event,” said Claire Ludes, executive director for the Salina Area United Way. “The Salina community came together in an amazing way to support our mission of strengthening our community and giving back to our nine funded partners.”

Tammy Walker Cancer Center is taking registrations for two free skin cancer and prostate cancer screening events in October.

Tammy Walker Cancer Center in partnership with the Salina Masonic Lodge No. 60, Masonic Cancer Alliance, and The University of Kansas Cancer Center will be holding free skin cancer and prostate cancer screenings on Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, 511 S. Santa Fe Avenue. The community outreach events are open to the public at no charge, however, registration for the screenings is required.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer found in both men and women. People of all ages should have moles and other unusual skin changes evaluated by a professional, according to information from Tammy Walker Cancer Center.

Additionally, prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men behind lung cancer. The prostate cancer screening is for men ages 55 to 69 and includes a PSA blood test and physical exam, Tammy Walker Cancer Center noted in a news release. Prior to testing men will have the opportunity to consult with a urologist to help decide if the screening is appropriate and desirable.

Those interested in participating are asked to sign up for an appointment by calling Daniel Craig at 785-452-4848. Masks will be required. These screenings have filled up in past years, so registering early is recommended. 

In addition to the screenings, take-home colorectal cancer screening kits and tobacco cessation materials will be available at the event. Also, blood pressure readings will be taken.

A transplant will enable Calvin to return to classes at Salina South High School, as he’s currently studying online while he undergoes treatment, and continue doing the things he loves – playing basketball and soccer, running track and listening to music.

DKMS, in partnership with 99KG's Shane McClintock, is sponsoring a blood stem cell donor registration drive to help find a matching donor for Calvin.

The donor registration drive is scheduled for noon-6 p.m. Friday at the Eagle Radio studios, 1825 S. Ohio.

Anyone in good health between ages 18-55 is encouraged to attend the registration drive. Persons attending will review medical eligibility, fill out registration forms, swab the insides of their cheeks, and then drop off their completed packets before leaving the drive, according to DKMS.

UPDATE: Second transplant donor registration event planned

The Salina Police Department Friday afternoon released a clarification of its report to media Thursday concerning a criminal threat at Salina South High School. From the Salina Police Department:

On September 22, 2022, a press briefing from the Salina Police Department was made to local media with regards to a bomb threat made at Salina South High School.

On September 21, 2022, a School Resource Officer was made aware of a threatening statement made to students. The statement indicated that in the future a bomb would be brought to the school.

Some reporting has stated that the threat indicated that there was a bomb in the school. TO BE CLEAR, there was never an indication a bomb was inside the school, there was never any indication that the students or staff were in any immediate danger.

Any threat made against a school is taken seriously and when corroborated by independent witnesses is considered a credible threat and the appropriate action is taken, to include charging the individual(s) involved when probable cause exists. The individual in this case was arrested and charged with Criminal Threat.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Thursday's story in the Salina Post included information that a boy had made a "verbal threat concerning a bomb in the school." Which he did, based both on what information was provided to media Thursday and the clarification from the Salina Police Department on Friday. That information in the Thursday story in no way indicated that a bomb was in the school at the time the statement was made.&nbsp;

A Salina boy was arrested Wednesday after a bomb threat allegedly was made at a local high school.

A staff member reported to the school resource officer that a 16-year-old boy had made a verbal threat concerning a bomb in the school to a group of people at Salina South High School, 730 E. Magnolia Road, on Wednesday, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

Police were able to establish that the report was credible and the boy was taken into custody. Hanus said the boy was arrested on a requested charge of criminal threat.

An employee arrived to open the business and discovered the safe was missing. Video surveillance shows during the early morning hours, an unknown suspect forced entry through the rear door and removed the safe.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about burglary at Wingstop

About 15 years ago, Dickinson County Commissioners were first approached about the possibility of paving 1400 Avenue west to the Saline County line where the roadway becomes E. Magnolia Road. Then, if Saline County would do the same from the county line to S. Kipp Road, it would create a direct route from Dickinson County to southern Salina.

While the Dickinson County Commission was generally in favor of the idea, the same couldn’t be said for the Saline County Commission at that time.

“We were never able to get much traction on the idea, but recently someone approached (Dickinson County Commissioner) Ron Roller asking whether 1400 Avenue could be paved over to southern Salina,” said Dickinson County Administrator Brad Homman. “They have a new county administrator and new commission now and they were interested in talking about that.”

The prospect seems feasible. After all, federal BIL (Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) legislation, which allocates approximately $1 trillion to modernize infrastructure and update the nation’s transportation system, means grant money might be available to help fund the project.

The paving project under discussion would include nine miles, running west from Eden Road in Dickinson County, connecting to Kipp Road in Saline County continuing to Magnolia Road. Five of those miles are in Dickinson County, while four are in Saline.

During a meeting last week between Homman, Dickinson County Asst. Administrator/Budget Director Janelle Dockendorf, Saline County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes and Saline County Engineer Justin Mader the economic realities of the project were discussed.

First, before any grant application can even be made, both counties must have engineering studies in place that lay out the basic road plan, including the design, utilities, drainage and other considerations. The total cost for an engineering study is estimated at $900,000, based on current costs of $100,000 a mile.

Dickinson County’s share for its five miles would be around $500,000.

“We have to have the engineering study to show it’s ready for bid. That money would have to come out of our pocket, but we don’t even know if the project would move forward,” Homman said.

As for the paving project, Dockendorf shared that Engineer Mader said the total estimated cost for the completed project could run as high as $13 million, based upon work recently completed in the City of Salina.

If the project was awarded a BIL grant, both counties would then be responsible for a 20 percent match, on top of the money doled out for the engineering study.

“To pay for the local match that would be $1 million a mile in today’s costs and who knows how inflation will continue to impact that?” Homman said. “If it costs between $10 to $13 million to go across there with us providing the 20 percent match on our side, it wouldn’t be cheap by any means.”

On the other hand, the BIL grant is the best opportunity to ever get a paved road into south Salina constructed.

“We would have to rob money from some other road and bridge projects to do the engineering study,” Homman said.

Besides the high cost, the road project itself has challenges. For one, there has to be a 60-foot right of way in both counties to accommodate easements and culverts.

Dickinson County – for the most part – already has ample right of way to meet the requirements and in situations where more is needed, five to 10-feet on either side of the roadway could be purchased.

Saline County, however, would have to purchase a significant amount of land for right of way and also move a cemetery, located about 1 ½ miles west of the county line, because some graves are too close to the road.

Flooding is another problem in Saline County.

“Three miles in, the road drops into the Gypsum valley and they’ve got a mile of flood plain where the Gypsum Creek goes. They’d (engineers) have to figure out to get that road up to the 25-year flood stage so it only runs over every 25 years,” Homman said. “Those things are going to impact negatively.”

That area floods “quite a bit,” he explained, most recently in 2018 and can cover up to three-quarters of a mile.

Homman wondered if there was a reason why the Dickinson/Saline County road was not paved back in the 1930s-40s when the WPA (Works Progress Administration) was doing those type of projects.

“And maybe it was because the south end of Salina didn’t develop until the last couple of decades. Maybe people didn’t see a future need to get into Salina that way,” Homman said.

Commissioners Craig Chamberlin and Lynn Peterson both indicated they did not feel spending $600,000 on an engineering study was cost effective.

“If there’s a 90 percent chance you won’t proceed, why spend the $600,000 and then it’s gone,” Chamberlin said.

“A study doesn’t have much value sitting on the shelf,” Peterson said.

Both said they felt money could be better spent on updating the county-owned portion in the northwest corridor of Abilene. The county has been looking for funding to eventually replace the bridge located just west of Abilene Middle School on NW 14th Street (Old Highway 40), reconfigure the intersection at NW 14th, Van Buren Street and Flag Road and make drainage improvements.

Commissioner Ron Roller asked if there were other, less expensive options, to improve 1400 Avenue, noting that a number of people in his district travel into that part of Saline County.

Homman said that chip sealing would make the base a “little bit more solid,” but that Saline County would also have to do its portion of the road.

Homman and Dockendorf said they would talk to Road and Bridge Supervisor Martin Tannahill about other ways to improve the road and see if Tannahill could reach out to the Saline County road and bridge director about options.

Even with grant funds, paving project to south Salina may be cost prohibitive

We are ready to start Baby Step 2, and we have about $35,000 in total debt. Our two smallest debts, a credit card and a truck we financed, are both $4,500 right now, and we have a combined income of about $95,000 a year. Since the credit card has a higher interest rate, my wife thinks we should pay it off first. To me, the truck is a necessity, and we should pay it off first for that reason. What do you say?

When the rule of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">paying off debts</a>&nbsp;from smallest to largest doesn’t apply, I think you should attack the one with the larger interest rate first. In your case, that’d be the credit card debt.

I get what you’re saying about the truck. And I agree that transportation is a necessity. You guys might be in a bind if something happened and you lost a vehicle, but it’s also a situation you could probably work around for a little while if you had no choice. My guess is you have friends or relatives who could loan you a car in a pinch, and public transportation is an option for some folks. So yeah, knock out the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/the-truth-about-credit-card-debt" target="_blank">credit card</a>&nbsp;first, then move on to the truck.

ELLSWORTH – A Wilson man has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for conviction of child sex crimes under the Kansas version of Jessica’s Law, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.

Jason Cunningham, 36, was sentenced in Ellsworth County District Court by Judge Carey Hipp to two life sentences with parole eligibility after 50 years, plus an additional 32 months in prison. Cunningham was found guilty by a jury in July of two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, one count of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, one count of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, one count of indecent liberties with a child, one count of aggravated intimidation of a victim, and two counts of promoting obscenity to a minor.

Hipp also sentenced Cunningham to lifetime registration as a violent offender and lifetime parole.
