Police are investigating the theft of a motorcycle in north Salina Tuesday night.

A 62-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between 9-10:30 p.m. Tuesday, someone stole his 2005 Harley-Davidson Springer Softail Classic motorcycle from the 1000 block of N. 12th Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The motorcycle, valued at $8,000, has black side saddle bags and a tear in the seat. It also has a Kansas license plate of 72DPX, Forrester said.

The owner still has the keys to the motorcycle in his possession.

CHAPMAN - A minor earthquake rattled part of Dickinson County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude quake struck at 12:46 a.m. northeast of Chapman. The quake was centered just south-southeast of the Sage Road/2800 Avenue intersection.

9th Judicial District commission announces interview schedule

We have turned the calendar to July, and that means different things to different people. For students and teachers July means summer is at the halfway point, and the first day of school is near. For those of us in agriculture it means haying season and watching fall crops grow. In the Farm Bureau world, July is the start of county Farm Bureau annual meetings. County Farm Bureau meetings in Kansas are as unique as the counties themselves. They are held anytime from July until October; the only stipulation is that they have to be done in time to get the voting delegates for that county registered for the Kansas Farm Bureau annual meeting in December. The meetings vary in the type of meal served – anything from catered affairs to hotdog and hamburger feeds or even ice cream socials. Some have entertainment, others feature educational speakers while some are bare bones, business-only gatherings. Recently some counties have gone with more family friendly activities with their annual meeting tagged on at the end. Yes, there is no cookie-cutter county Farm Bureau Annual meeting template. That is the beauty of Kansas Farm Bureau, each county organization is its own unique entity. That is what makes me proud to be a member of Kansas Farm Bureau and the Pottawatomie County Farm Bureau specifically. I have never been involved with an organization that was so grassroots driven and responsive to its members. Every annual meeting reflects the unique personality of an individual county and the members on the board. I have seen traditions developed over many years in some counties and other counties like to mix it up with something new each year. The COVID-19 years saw a lot of change in our county annual meeting with many being held virtual, thank goodness that isn’t the case anymore. One thing that all county annual meetings share is great fellowship among the members. That is where I want to make the plea to you. If you are a member and you have not been to one of your annual meetings, please change that this year. You should receive notice of the meeting from your respective county. Some will be a simple postcard while others will be a newsletter touting what your county has done during the year. If you have not received your notice yet or think you might have missed it, just call your local office and they will be happy to give you the details. I hope you will consider attending, this is a good way to get your toes wet and see what your organization has to offer. I don’t know of a single county that isn’t looking for members who want to be active and this is a good way to find out what it is all about. Who knows you might at least have a great meal or some other experience?

INSIGHT: Summits of Summer

On July 13, 2013, a jury in Sanford, Florida, cleared neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman of all charges in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the Black teenager whose killing unleashed furious debate over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice.

In 1863, deadly rioting against the Civil War military draft erupted in New York City. (The insurrection was put down three days later.)

In 1923, a sign consisting of 50-foot-tall letters spelling out "HOLLYWOODLAND" was dedicated in the Hollywood Hills to promote a subdivision (the last four letters were removed in 1949).

In 1960, John F. Kennedy won the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot at his party's convention in Los Angeles.

In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to be U.S. Solicitor General; Marshall became the first Black jurist appointed to the post. (Two years later, Johnson nominated Marshall to the U.S. Supreme Court.)

Five years ago: A federal judge in Hawaii weakened President Donald Trump's travel ban by vastly expanding the list of U.S. family relationships that visitors from six Muslim-majority countries could use to get into the country. Trump defended his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer during the presidential campaign, characterizing it as standard campaign practice. China's most prominent political prisoner, Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights campaigner Liu Xiaobo died in prison of liver cancer at the age of 61.

One year ago: The government reported that prices paid by U.S. consumers in June had posted the sharpest 12-month spike in 13 years, as a swift rebound in spending ran up against widespread supply shortages. Los Angeles Angels pitching and hitting star Shohei Ohtani unleashed his 100 mph heat while pitching a perfect inning for the win as the American League beat the National League 5-2 for its eighth straight victory in the All-Star Game; Ohtani went 0-for-2 at the plate. "The Crown" tied with "The Mandalorian" for the most Emmy nominations, 24 each, but the Marvel universe also got bragging rights with runner-up "WandaVision"; the nominations reinforced the rapid rise of streaming, as the top-nominated scripted shows were on services that had largely emerged in the preceding two years.

In pursuit of that mission, the board of education approved a 1.7 percent increase to the base salary, along with step movement as allowed under the salary schedules. 

The average increase for all staff is projected to be 3.1 percent for 2022-23 school year.

“We value our employees’ work and commitment that help make Salina Public Schools the best place to learn and work,” said Linn Exline, superintendent.

For a second year, the board of education approved a $1,500 retention incentive pay plan for all staff in regular, ongoing positions. The $1,500 retention incentive pay plan, funded by federal ESSER dollars, encourages staff to continue working with USD 305.

Salina’s popular Comic Con returns to Tony’s Pizza Events Center this weekend. This year’s event includes three special guests, cosplays contests, and plenty of shopping.

Best known to fans as Zhane, the original silver power ranger from Saban's Power Rangers in Space 1998. Oklahoma native Nimmo is also known for his roles in Pleasantville, American Indian Graffiti: This Thing Life, Dude, Where’s My Car?, and Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Justin has also been known to do look-alike work for Brad Pitt.

Nelson is best known for having played the iconic character of Darth Vader in the Special Edition re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy as well as in the Rebel Assault II and Dark Forces games from LucasArts.

Andrew, who began playing Vader for Lucasfilm in 1994, has portrayed the infamous dark lord for film, commercials, television shows, print, games, and live appearances. He has managed to spend more time in the official Vader costume than any other actor.

Fernandes is the only living Tusken Raider from the original 1977 Star Wars (later renamed Episode IV: A New Hope). He was one of two animal trainers who worked with the elephant which played the Bantha in the desert scenes.

Vendors will be on hand for attendees who want to buy, sell, and trade comic books, toys and pop culture memorabilia. Cosplay contests are Saturday at 4 p.m. for adults 16 and up; Sunday at 3 p.m. for kids 15 and under. The grand prize for this year’s adult cosplay contest is $1,000.

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - $11 for ages 9 and up, 8 and under is free with paying adult.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;today awarded $4.1 million in Community Service&nbsp;Tax&nbsp;Credits&nbsp;(CSP)&nbsp;to&nbsp;bolster&nbsp;the fundraising efforts of&nbsp;29&nbsp;nonprofit organizations across&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;that improve&nbsp;local&nbsp;access&nbsp;to quality&nbsp;child&nbsp;care, healthcare,&nbsp;education, arts,&nbsp;and housing.&nbsp;

The administration&nbsp;continued its&nbsp;ongoing&nbsp;commitment&nbsp;to&nbsp;addressing the&nbsp;child care&nbsp;shortage&nbsp;by including&nbsp;almost&nbsp;$1&nbsp;million&nbsp;specifically&nbsp;for nonprofits that boost the supply&nbsp;of child&nbsp;care options.&nbsp;

“It’s no surprise that the best solutions to the issues facing Kansas communities often come from local nonprofits rooted in those very communities,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly.&nbsp;“That’s why we’re doing everything possible to lift up the work of our nonprofits through programs like the Community Service Tax Credits.”&nbsp;

CSP tax credits have been issued in the Sunflower State since 1994. The program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities (populations less than 15,000) and a 50% tax credit in larger communities. The credits are a direct deduction from the donor’s state tax obligation. For example,&nbsp;a donor making a $1,000 gift in a rural community receives a $700 tax credit when they file their state taxes, making the net cost to the donor only $300.&nbsp;

This year,&nbsp;CSP will assist five different counties with building new or upgrading existing childcare facilities.&nbsp;Communities&nbsp;statewide&nbsp;will&nbsp;be assisted in their efforts to&nbsp;improve&nbsp;healthcare&nbsp;facilities&nbsp;or&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;new diagnostic&nbsp;equipment;&nbsp;create&nbsp;housing options for low-income&nbsp;or homeless&nbsp;Kansans;&nbsp;update&nbsp;libraries;&nbsp;expand access to the arts&nbsp;and cultural attractions;&nbsp;provide&nbsp;new&nbsp;shelters&nbsp;for&nbsp;foster children&nbsp;and&nbsp;victims of domestic and sexual violence;&nbsp;and&nbsp;design&nbsp;innovative public&nbsp;gathering spaces.&nbsp;

“The ingenuity&nbsp;displayed by this year’s awardees&nbsp;working&nbsp;to improve the quality of life&nbsp;in&nbsp;their communities is impressive,” said Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland.&nbsp;“Supporting these local&nbsp;initiatives allows&nbsp;the state to continue attracting&nbsp;new businesses to invest in Kansas. Strong communities provide a stable workforce, which&nbsp;benefits&nbsp;the entire economy.”&nbsp;

Awarded nonprofits were chosen through a&nbsp;highly&nbsp;competitive, score-based selection process.&nbsp;This year, 29&nbsp;of the&nbsp;55&nbsp;requested projects received CSP funding.&nbsp;

CSP funding is being awarded to the following organizations:&nbsp;

Allen County:&nbsp;Hope&nbsp;Unlimited&nbsp;Inc.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Construction of a new&nbsp;emergency&nbsp;shelter facility to serve victims of domestic and sexual violence in Allen, Anderson, Neosho and Woodson counties.

Butler County: Butler Community College Foundation&nbsp;–&nbsp;Construction of a new&nbsp;Culinary Arts &amp; Hospitality Education Center&nbsp;for Butler Community College students.&nbsp;

Chase County: Camp Wood YMCA –&nbsp;Relocate and expand its health center to better serve a diverse child population with chronic and more severe disabilities.

Cheyenne County: Cheyenne Center for Creativity, CC4C&nbsp;– Renovation and repurposing of the 202 on Washington Project with a gallery, community event center and community kitchen.

Crawford County: Colonial Fox Theatre Foundation –&nbsp;Construction of the Colonial Fox Theatre Pavilion joined to the theatre.

Dickinson County: Discovery Childcare Learning Center –&nbsp;Building an addition to more than double the capacity of the childcare center.

Doniphan County: Doniphan Darlings, Inc. –&nbsp;Energy efficiency upgrades and capital improvements for the nonprofit childcare facility.&nbsp;

Douglas County: GoodLife Innovations, Inc. –&nbsp;Construction of a professional family home at GoodLife’s Midnight Farm to support persons with&nbsp;intellectual and developmental disabilities&nbsp;in a rural setting.

Ellis County: Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, Inc. – Revitalization of outdated buildings to improve energy efficiency, access and connectivity.

Finney County: Garden City Community College Endowment Association–&nbsp;Addition to the college’s fine arts building to expand programs and create new gallery space and a community event center.

Geary County: Friends of Dorothy Bramlage Public Library – Construction of new, 30,000-square-foot facility to enhance the services provided to better serve the community.

Greenwood County: Greenwood Preservation Society –&nbsp;Renovation of the Red Owl Building Multi-Purpose Community Center to provide a creative, entrepreneurial, retail and meeting space.&nbsp;

Harper County: Hospital District No. 6 of Harper County–&nbsp;Operation of the Bringing Your Care Home mobile clinic to provide healthcare in the county and surrounding areas.

Harvey County: Central Kansas Community Foundation –&nbsp;Assistance to the Newton Public Library and Foundation to build a modern library.

Johnson County: KidsTLC, Inc. –&nbsp;Expansion of the Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility and re-engineering of the existing campus.

Kiowa County: True North Inc. –&nbsp;Renovation of the Haviland House to provide housing and assistance for foster youth.

Leavenworth County: Leavenworth Attainable Housing, Inc. – Rehabilitation of one house and purchase of five additional houses for the homeless or those on the verge of homelessness.&nbsp;

 As a precaution, victims in a previous case involving the juvenile, members of the public at the Chapman ball field complex and the Chapman swimming pool were notified and those facilities were evacuated after the threats were made.

The juvenile was described as a 17-year-old white boy, approximately 5-foot-10, 140 pounds with shaggy brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black and white sweat shirt on foot near 1400 Ave. and Fair Road south of Abilene at about 9 p.m. Monday.

Assisting in the search were the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department, Chapman police, Abilene police, Saline County Sheriff's Office, Junction City police and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The juvenile could not be located.&nbsp;

During the search the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter unit, Sheriff's Office K-9 and drone units and a Saline County Sheriff's Office mobile forward-looking infrared unit were utilized. Dickinson County Fire District No. 1 assisted in manning a mobile command post.

The juvenile subject displayed a small pistol in at least one of the videos he recorded on Snapchat. The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office said the juvenile was considered armed and dangerous.

For his inaugural season as the new music director and conductor of the Salina Symphony, Yaniv Segal has cooked up what he believes will be a well-balanced musical buffet.

Segal, a Michigan resident who was selected from five finalists for the position after a worldwide search that took nearly two years, compares each concert in a symphonic season to a “fine meal.”

“Some meals you’re going to taste something new, and some meals will be something you’ve tasted before,” he said. “The goal is to be diverse, properly balanced and make sure there’s something for everyone.”

Since being informed of his selection in early May, Segal has faced the challenge of putting together a diverse and balanced season in just two months, one that not only would provide “something for everyone,” but would serve as an introduction to Segal’s vision for the Salina Symphony’s future.

“I think I’ve achieved that for this first season,” he said. “We have a canon of masterworks, lesser-known works by newer composers and crossover adventures.”

The opening concert of the Salina Symphony’s 2022-23 season, titled Rise Up, will be performed Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. in the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

The concert, a mixture of classic and contemporary music, will open with Patrick Harlin’s majestic Earthrise – based on the iconic photograph taken from NASA’s Apollo 8 spacecraft – followed by&nbsp; Violin Concerto in D minor, Op.47 by Jean Sibelius, featuring violinist and Kansas City native Maria Ioudenitch.

“The opening piece by Patrick Harlin is very fresh, just having its world premiere a few months ago,” Segal said.

The concert will conclude with a performance of one of the most iconic symphonies of all time, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor.

The other five concerts in the season, all to be performed in the Stiefel Theatre, are as follows.

Romance (Nov. 6, 4 p.m.): a concert of romantic music that will feature Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro overture, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture, contemporary composer Gabriel Prokofiev’s suite from his genre-defying crossover album Breaking Screens, and an original composition by Segal himself, Woodbridge, Summer of 2010,&nbsp; which he wrote for his wedding and recently orchestrated.

“It’s very personal to me,” Segal said. “I always intended for it to be orchestrated, so during the pandemic, I finally had the time to turn it into an orchestral piece.”

The Nutcracker (Dec. 10, 7 p.m., Dec. 11, 4 p.m.): Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet tells the story of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream set to one of the most beautiful scores ever written. Performed in partnership with Ballet Salina.

Adrienne Allen, executive director of the Salina Symphony, said the ballet will be performed every few years during the holiday season.

“We are thrilled to present The Nutcracker with Ballet Salina this year,” she said. “The Christmas Festival will be back next season.”

Journey (Jan. 29, 4 p.m.): features Grazyna Bacewicz’s Symphony No. 3,&nbsp; written by a Polish composer who wrote under the terror of Soviet rule. This will be followed by a multimedia presentation of Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America. Produced in partnership with Theatre Salina, Ellis Island celebrates the powerful and inspiring stories of people who left their homelands in search of a better life.

Segal said actual texts from European immigrants who came through Ellis Island during the last century will be read aloud by local actors, accompanied by music performed before historical images projected on a screen.

“It’s a fabulous composition, so moving, even more so when it’s done live with visuals and a big range of characters,” Segal said.

Ellis Island is particularly personal to Segal, the son of Polish and Israeli immigrants and the first generation of his family to be born in the United States.

All You Need is Love (March 5, 4 p.m.): a pops concert featuring musical favorites from Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, and Star Wars, as well as classics by Bizet, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. The concert concludes with an orchestral tribute to The Beatles, Love is All You Need. Special guest will be mezzo-soprano Samantha Rose Williams.

Passion (May 7, 4 p.m.): a celebration of powerful female voices that includes Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite, Jules Massenet’s Meditation from Thais, Georges Bizet’s immortal Carmen, Suite No. 1, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Op. 35.

Allen said Segal has planned a “wonderfully diverse season” that will inspire both musicians and audience members, and she looks forward to what he has in store for future seasons.

“We have so much to look forward to under Yaniv’s artistic leadership,” she said. “He brings a fresh new perspective, as well as a vision for potential new projects and partnerships, as we move into the next era of the Salina Symphony.”

Segal said he was thrilled to be selected as the new music director and conductor of the Salina Symphony.

When Segal was picked as one of the five finalists and came to Salina to conduct his audition concert in January, he said he not only was impressed with the performance skills of the Symphony musicians but also at the organization’s dedication to enhancing the cultural life of their community.

“There’s real community involvement here, and that’s exciting to me,” he said. “I’m thrilled to join the Salina Symphony family as music director and to present beautiful, moving and inspiring music for the greater Salina community.”

Segal said he already is thinking ahead to the next season and beyond.

“There’s a lot of pieces I want to share, as well as guest performers and composers I want to bring to town,” he said.

Santa Fe Avenue.The concert, a mixture of classic and contemporary music, will open with Patrick Harlin’s majestic Earthrise – based on the iconic photograph taken from NASA’s Apollo 8 spacecraft – followed by&nbsp; Violin Concerto in D minor, Op.47 by Jean Sibelius, featuring violinist and Kansas City native Maria Ioudenitch.“The opening piece by Patrick Harlin is very fresh, just having its world premiere a few months ago,” Segal said.The concert will conclude with a performance of one of the most iconic symphonies of all time, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor.Upcoming concertsThe other five concerts in the season, all to be performed in the Stiefel Theatre, are as follows.Romance (Nov. 6, 4 p.m.): a concert of romantic music that will feature Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro overture, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture, contemporary composer Gabriel Prokofiev’s suite from his genre-defying crossover album Breaking Screens, and an original composition by Segal himself, Woodbridge, Summer of 2010,&nbsp; which he wrote for his wedding and recently orchestrated.“It’s very personal to me,” Segal said. “I always intended for it to be orchestrated, so during the pandemic, I finally had the time to turn it into an orchestral piece.”The Nutcracker (Dec. 10, 7 p.m., Dec. 11, 4 p.m.): Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet tells the story of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream set to one of the most beautiful scores ever written. Performed in partnership with Ballet Salina.Adrienne Allen, executive director of the Salina Symphony, said the ballet will be performed every few years during the holiday season.“We are thrilled to present The Nutcracker with Ballet Salina this year,” she said. “The Christmas Festival will be back next season.”Journey (Jan. 29, 4 p.m.): features Grazyna Bacewicz’s Symphony No. 3,&nbsp; written by a Polish composer who wrote under the terror of Soviet rule. This will be followed by a multimedia presentation of Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America. Produced in partnership with Theatre Salina, Ellis Island celebrates the powerful and inspiring stories of people who left their homelands in search of a better life.Segal said actual texts from European immigrants who came through Ellis Island during the last century will be read aloud by local actors, accompanied by music performed before historical images projected on a screen.“It’s a fabulous composition, so moving, even more so when it’s done live with visuals and a big range of characters,” Segal said.Ellis Island is particularly personal to Segal, the son of Polish and Israeli immigrants and the first generation of his family to be born in the United States.All You Need is Love (March 5, 4 p.m.): a pops concert featuring musical favorites from Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, and Star Wars, as well as classics by Bizet, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. The concert concludes with an orchestral tribute to The Beatles, Love is All You Need. Special guest will be mezzo-soprano Samantha Rose Williams.Passion (May 7, 4 p.m.): a celebration of powerful female voices that includes Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite, Jules Massenet’s Meditation from Thais, Georges Bizet’s immortal Carmen, Suite No. 1, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Op. 35.Allen said Segal has planned a “wonderfully diverse season” that will inspire both musicians and audience members, and she looks forward to what he has in store for future seasons.“We have so much to look forward to under Yaniv’s artistic leadership,” she said. “He brings a fresh new perspective, as well as a vision for potential new projects and partnerships, as we move into the next era of the Salina Symphony.”Thrilled to be selectedSegal said he was thrilled to be selected as the new music director and conductor of the Salina Symphony.When Segal was picked as one of the five finalists and came to Salina to conduct his audition concert in January, he said he not only was impressed with the performance skills of the Symphony musicians but also at the organization’s dedication to enhancing the cultural life of their community.“There’s real community involvement here, and that’s exciting to me,” he said. “I’m thrilled to join the Salina Symphony family as music director and to present beautiful, moving and inspiring music for the greater Salina community.”Segal said he already is thinking ahead to the next season and beyond.“There’s a lot of pieces I want to share, as well as guest performers and composers I want to bring to town,” he said.Season ticketsTickets for the 2022-2023 Salina Symphony season are available for $150 and $195 and may be ordered by phone at 785-823-8309 or in person at the Salina Symphony office on the second floor of the Stiefel Theatre. Segal’s first Salina Symphony season: Something for everyone

So far, runners from 22 states have registered for the new Salina Crossroads Marathon.

The race, which is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Salina, will serve as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The event also will include a half marathon, marathon relay, half marathon relay, and 4.01 K races to provide other options for runners and walkers to participate in this new event. 

Additionally, 100 percent of the race entry fees will go to support youth sports in Saline County, according to Daniel Craig, race director.

Craig told Salina Post in an earlier interview that the course was designed to also have spectator options.

"When we developed the course we worked hard to incorporate activation areas where we will have aid stations (water, Gatorade, snacks), music, and places for people to cheer on the runners. We will have maps of the course showing the places along the course where it will be easiest for people to be at to cheer on the runners," he said.

There also is a need for volunteers. Craig told Salina Post that volunteers are needed for the following.
