SUV strikes fire hydrant; Salina man arrested

A Salina man was arrested after an incident in which the vehicle he was driving crashed into a fire hydrant late Monday night.

An officer was sitting in a parking lot in the 700 block of N. Broadway Boulevard at approximately 11:30 p.m. Monday when he heard a loud crash, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer went south on N. Broadway and found that a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe had struck a fire hydrant in the 500 block of N. Broadway Boulevard before coming to rest in the 600 block of N. Broadway Boulevard.

While making contact with the driver, identified as Manuel Meza, 27, of Salina, the officer realized that Meza was possibly under the influence of alcohol, Forrester said.

At one point, Meza allegedly became aggressive, went at the officer, and was tased, Forrester said.

Meza was taken to Salina Regional Health Center by ambulance to be checked out.

The SUV was towed from the scene.

Meza was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

●Driving under the influence of alcohol

●Assault of a law enforcement officer

●Interference with a law enforcement officer

●Improper driving on laned roadways

●Driving with view impaired (he allegedly had not cleaned ice/snow from windshield)

●Driving with no proof of insurance
