Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center

LINDSBORG - A look at the works of John Heter will be the next exhibition at the Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center in Lindsborg.

The center, in partnership with The Raymer Society, will host a John Heter (1944-2013) retrospective exhibition from Sept. 30 through Oct. 30. A reception for the exhibition is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. Oct. 2.

The Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center, 114 1/2 S. Main Street, is open 1-5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Heter was a lifelong artist and craftsman who worked in many mediums and was a talented musician. He came to Lindsborg in 1970 to attend Bethany College and spent the rest of his life as a Lindsborg resident. His early paintings were the street scenes of Lindsborg, as viewed from his southwest corner studio/apartment in the second story of the Sundstrom Building. Heter and many other Bethany art students lived in these second-story apartments called “The Slums” during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Heter worked for The Simmental Shield Magazine and Kansas Business News in the 1970s as a layout and paste-up artist. Several of his paintings were featured on the covers of these publications. After his tenure with the magazines, he worked for MCDS in McPherson, until his retirement in 2006. He continued to work on his art after retiring.

Over his life, Heter painted scenes from his experiences in various subjects. His unique style of not blending the colors in his work gives a “paint by number” effect that makes his paintings distinctive. Heter was always experimenting with different mediums, including scratchboard drawings, scrimshaw on old piano ivories, and assemblages from piano parts that he called “Kachinas” or “Piano Men.” Drawing from his musical talents, he created musical instruments as art objects and as actual working instruments later in his life.

This retrospective represents many of the mediums in which Heter worked. Heter’s work is in private collections thought out the United States, and the works in this exhibition are all on loan from many of them.

GYPSUM - Two horses were killed in a single vehicle accident just north of Gypsum Wednesday morning. 

Edward Conway, 60, of Gypsum, had just left Gypsum and was headed west on Kansas Highway 4 when his 2020 Kia Sportage struck two horses in the roadway at approximately 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

A miniature horse that was killed was found on the roadway. A full-sized horse that died was found in the ditch.

The horses were among several horses from Gypsum Stables that had gotten out, Soldan said. Gypsum Stables is owned by James Branscum.

SUV strikes, kills 2 horses on K-4 just north of Gypsum

A northeast Kansas man was arrested in north Salina Wednesday on requested criminal trespass and theft charges.

Earlier this month, the Salina Police Department had received complaints from the City of Salina that someone was driving on the flood control dike on the north side of the city. Motorized vehicles driven by private citizens are not allowed on the dike.

The complaints also included specific vehicle and license plate information. From that, police determined that the 2022 Toyota Tacoma pickup, valued at $34,000, was being rented from Hertz, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. The pickup originally had been rented Aug. 24 and was supposed to have been returned on Aug. 31.

Hanus said an officer then called Hertz on Sept. 15 and was told that the pickup return date had been changed to Sept. 16. When an officer contacted Hertz on Wednesday, a company representative said that the pickup had not yet been returned and that the man who was renting the pickup had turned off his credit card. At that point, Hertz reported the pickup as being stolen.

Later on Wednesday, a patrol officer saw the now stolen pickup in the parking lot at Pilot Travel Center, 1944 N. Ninth Street, and made contact with the occupant, who was identified as Michael A. Flanagan, 76, of Axtell, Kan., Hanus said. Flanagan also was the person who had rented the pickup.

Flanagan was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, Hanus said.

Today in History - September 22

LINDSBORG – Bethany College has announced that Jacob Spilker, '15, is the new vice president of advancement and alumni engagement, effective Sept. 28. 

"I am thrilled to be joining the advancement team at Bethany College. As an alum, it has been great to see the growth under the leadership of President Mauch. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to work alongside President Mauch, Brenda Meyer, and the rest of the advancement team as we continue to push towards a very bright future for our Dear Ol' Bethany. I look forward to diving into the community and meeting so many others that share the same vision for Bethany College as we all work together to bring it to life," Spilker said.

Spilker graduated Cum Laude from Bethany College in 2015 and then became a program specialist for the Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries until 2016. He then joined Camp Tomah Shinga as an associate director responsible for all programming on-site and, in 2018, was promoted to executive camp director overseeing all operations. Since 2016, Spilker has tripled the attendance and largely increased the endowment at Camp Tomah Shinga. 

"It is exciting to welcome Jacob back and add his proven skillset to the leadership and advancement teams here at Bethany," said President Elizabeth Mauch.

South's Fulkerson named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist

Kansas Wesleyan has deepened its relationship with one of its closest longtime supporters, as the university announced Thursday that it has created a scholarship for employees of Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) and their dependents. Anyone eligible for the scholarship is guaranteed at least $20,000 of scholarship aid per year.

“Salina Regional Health Center and its foundation have always supported Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “During the past few years, however, this relationship has grown significantly with the advent of the Nursing Education Center. Many KWU Nursing graduates go on to work at Salina Regional, and we’re proud to reciprocate that relationship by creating this scholarship. In addition, we are committed to being a key partner in the economic growth of this region. Offering this scholarship will help keep KWU students in Salina after graduation, thus driving said growth.”

Salina Regional Health Center gifted KWU $1 million for the renovation of the Nursing Education Center, including the building and property in 2019, and the Salina Regional Health Foundation added an additional $1.4 million in support later that year. The organization’s foundation has also supported scholarships at KWU for many years. In turn, numerous KWU graduates, including Shingi Chingaya ’21 and Amanda Hill ’21, have gone on to positions at SRHC.

“Kansas Wesleyan is a respected academic university that offers a number of degree programs at a great value to students locally,” said Joel Phelps, president and CEO at Salina Regional Health Center. “We are appreciative of our strong relationship and this opportunity for our employees and their family members to receive this educational support.”

KWUKansas Wesleyan has deepened its relationship with one of its closest longtime supporters, as the university announced Thursday that it has created a scholarship for employees of Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) and their dependents. Anyone eligible for the scholarship is guaranteed at least $20,000 of scholarship aid per year.“Salina Regional Health Center and its foundation have always supported Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “During the past few years, however, this relationship has grown significantly with the advent of the Nursing Education Center. Many KWU Nursing graduates go on to work at Salina Regional, and we’re proud to reciprocate that relationship by creating this scholarship. In addition, we are committed to being a key partner in the economic growth of this region. Offering this scholarship will help keep KWU students in Salina after graduation, thus driving said growth.”Salina Regional Health Center gifted KWU $1 million for the renovation of the Nursing Education Center, including the building and property in 2019, and the Salina Regional Health Foundation added an additional $1.4 million in support later that year. The Sunset Sinners opened the Salina Downtown entertainment season in May, so its only fitting that they close the summer with another downtown concert.

The End of Sinner Summer event is scheduled for 3-6 p.m. Saturday at the downtown stage at N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street.

"We're looking forward to playing back in Salina this Saturday. We kind of kicked off the new downtown stage the first part of May, so it will be cool to end the summer series with the End of Sinner Summer!" Sunset Sinners drummer Blake Blackim told Salina Post.

"The weather should be great! Live music and beer...What could go wrong?" Blackim continued, giving a hat tip to one of the band's songs, What Could Go Wrong.

Doc and The Disorder are scheduled to open the concert at 3 p.m. with the Sunset Sinners taking the stage at 4 p.m., according to information from Salina Downtown. The event, sponsored by Salina Downtown and Wedel Financial Group, is open to the public at no charge.

"We do ask that you please do not bring your dogs," Salina Downtown noted in a news release.

Beer, hard seltzer, and water will be available for sale in the beer garden and the Food by Bonnie food truck will be on hand.

Additionally, there will be information about BOOM!, the upcoming street art and mural festival.

'End of Sinner Summer' set for Saturday on downtown stage

SALINE COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 3 a.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Kenworth semi driven by William G. Ingels, 52, McPherson, was northbound on Interstate 135 exiting to eastbound Interstate 70.

The driver lost control of the vehicle when the driver side tire failed. The vehicle slid off the east side of the roadway, traveled down an embankment and came to rest facing east on I-70.

EMS transported&nbsp;Ingels to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Salina Area United Way is gearing up for its revamped annual kick-off event, United Happy Hour.

The event is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Thursday in The Sullivan, a new event space at United Capital Management of Kansas, 227 N. Santa Fe Avenue.

Kick-off is a big event for the United Way that celebrates the start of the organization's 2022-2023 campaign season, raising dollars for local nonprofit organizations in our community.

This year, thanks to a generous donation by Richard and Sallie Morrison, there will be $25,000 in matching funds to share with the nine Salina Area United Way Funded Partners throughout the three-hour United Happy Hour event. This means that when community members attend the event this Thursday and make a donation to the 2022-2023 campaign or turn in their workplace Ccampaign pledge forms, their donation will be matched, up to 50 percent, to make an even greater impact on our community.

Salina Area United Way gears up for kick-off event Thursday

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher Over the past decade or two, farmhouse décor has been an in vogue style of interior design. It makes me chuckle when I think about people who don’t live on a farm trying to create clean and pretty spaces through white wash, distressed paint and vintage hardware. Real farmhouses are rarely as desirable as this style is made out to be. I live in a real farm house and can guarantee my house won’t be featured on HGTV anytime soon. I honestly don’t think there is anything in my house that resembles the farmhouse style. However, the character that inspired designers to want to recreate the functional, no frills feel of country living, can be seen in many places in this old farmhouse. Every house has its own story. Our house’s story began as a kit house made by Sears and Roebuck that was delivered by train and assembled by its owner. We don’t know the exact year the house was delivered but estimate it was likely around the 1920s. The house was built just a few yards from the original homestead, which was still standing until about a decade ago and could fit in our kitchen. I can imagine the excitement and pride that must have been felt when this model was selected. It was a statement of perseverance and success to move from a house that was merely shelter to what was likely the equivalent of a mansion for the time. The trade-off of our house’s cool story is it was built by farmers not professional carpenters. The house is sturdy and functional, even though it has lots of little imperfections that are a product of the original DIYers. The house has seen a lot of lifestyle change in the last century: the installation of indoor plumbing, electrification and the move from wood stoves and chimneys to a furnace and air conditioning. Some of the remnants of these eras can still be seen in things like a few push button light switches or nob and tub lights from the original electrification, which have been preserved as novelties. We have also seen glimpses of the interests and taste of former home owners as we have worked to make the house our own. While tearing out outdated carpeting to take advantage of the original hardwood floors, we found decorative room mats that were in style during the time of construction. Each time we discover a new detail in the house, it’s like the house is telling the story of generations that have lived here before. Though each family who has called this house their home has been unique, they all share some things in common. The kitchen has prepared many meals for families who work the land. The floors have been tracked with mud and dirt more times than they have been clean. The rooms have played host to moments of joy, hope, and love that hopefully outweighed the times of worry and grief. The bay windows provided protection for the extreme Kansas weather that has often been a blessing and a curse. Our house is worn and imperfect because it is a place where life has been lived. Character like that can’t be replicated for a home good store. This house will never be as pretty as homes designed to look like the farmhouse style, and that’s OK with me. I am happy to live in this old farmhouse.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Three died in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Kenworth semi driven by Dwight E. Morey, 63, Fairmont, Oklahoma, was southbound on Kansas 15 at 1500 Avenue.&nbsp;

The semi struck a 2006 Dodge Dakota driven by Joel C. Hynes, 54, Junction City, who was southbound on Kansas 15 and had made a u-turn at 1500 Avenue. 

After impact the pickup&nbsp; entered the east ditch and flipped onto its roof. The semi entered the east ditch and came to rest in a field.

Hynes and passengers in the pickup Mary L. Hynes, 64,&nbsp; and John L. Hynes, 78, Coal Valley, Illinois, were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp; Martin Becker Funeral Home. Morey was not transported for treatment of a minor injury. John Hynes was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

This Day in Weather History: Salina sets chilly record in 1918

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Western Star semi driven by Rodney E. Keller, 70, Hartley, Iowa, was eastbound on Kansas 156 at 15th Street.

The semi drifted off the right side of the road, struck the bridge rail and traveled down a steep embankment. 

The vehicle then traveled up a hill, went airborne at the hill crest, traveled back down another steep embankment before coming to rest in a soybean field

EMS transported Keller to the hospital in Ellsworth. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after violent Ellsworth Co. semi crash

Due to tree damage caused by the storm on Saturday, City of Salina staff will perform a sweep of the entire city to pick up tree limbs beginning Monday.

The thunderstorm and wind event that impacted the City of Salina on Saturday caused damage to trees in all sectors of the community. While not catastrophic the damage to trees in the community was significant and subject to city forces providing services to help residents recover from this storm event.

Residents are asked to neatly stack tree limbs near the curb on their property for city pick-up by 7 a.m. Monday. City crews will work their way throughout the entire community to pick up piles of tree and limb debris in sanitation trucks, dump trucks, and where necessary, a grapple truck or a front-end loader to load the larger tree trunks. The tree limb pickup effort is expected to take one-two weeks to complete.

Residents do still have the option to take their tree limb debris to the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill for free during normal business hours. The landfill is located at 4292 S. Burma Road and is open Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. (Please Note: Contractors providing a tree service are subject to fees and mixed residential loads containing sod, dirt, rock, lumber refuse, and grass will be charged $42 per ton).

City of Salina to pick up storm tree debris beginning Monday

Salina Regional Health Center announced today that it has extended public availability of the hospital's main entrance.

The hospital’s main entrance on Santa Fe Avenue will now be open to the public from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Previously, the main entrance had been closing at 5:30 p.m. due to COVID-19.

Patients also can now pay their bill in person at Salina Regional’s Operational Services Building located at 333 S. Fourth Street (former Salina Journal building) instead of having to go to the hospital’s Registration Department. The Operational Services Building will be open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Masks will still be required for all who enter the hospital’s facilities following state and federal COVID-19 guidelines for healthcare facilities. Hospital inpatients will still only be allowed to have two visitors at the same time. Visitors can alternate in and out of the facility throughout the day.

Visitors experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 or any other cold or flu symptoms should not visit.

Salina Regional announces extended access for visitors

A Salina teen with a rare form of blood cancer is in urgent need of a blood stem cell transplant.

Calvin Davis, 14, has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and is in urgent need of a blood stem cell transplant, according to DKMS, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating blood cancers. 

Calvin is looking forward to being a normal fourteen-year-old again and enjoying regular activities with his parents and three siblings, but first he must find his perfect match.

A transplant will enable Calvin to return to classes at Salina South High School, as he’s currently studying online while he undergoes treatment, and continue doing the things he loves – playing basketball and soccer, running track and listening to music.

"It is hard to remain positive, but I keep thinking about my dog and how happy she'll be to see me when I get home," Calvin said.

According to DKMS, 70 percent of people suffering from blood-related illnesses must rely on donors outside of their families to save their life.

DKMS, in partnership with 99KG's Shane McClintock, is sponsoring a blood stem cell donor registration drive to help find a matching donor for Calvin.

The donor registration drive is scheduled for noon-6 p.m. Friday at the Eagle Radio studios, 1825 S. Ohio.
