Heartland Early Education Program has announced that it will host the Saline County Safe Sleep Community Baby Shower in early October.

Due to space limitations, the event is open to all new (as of July 1) and expecting moms residing in Saline County. Moms may bring one support person.

The baby shower is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Heartland Early Education facility, 700 Jupiter Avenue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program is scheduled to begin promptly at 6 p.m. There will be no admittance after 6 p.m.

According to information from Heartland Early Education, the program will include information about safe sleep techniques, breast feeding resources, smoking cessation, refreshments, and drawings and prizes.

Additionally, a safety approved Pack-n-Play and Sleep Sack will be given to each new mom after completion of the program while supplies last.

Commissioners will not meet on Monday due to that day being the fifth Monday of the month.

Salina Regional Health Center is modifying its COVID-19 visitation guidelines.

Effective today, August 24, there will no longer be restrictions to visit or accompany patients based on age. The hospital had previously required all visitors be age 12 or older.

Hospital inpatients will still only be allowed to have two visitors at the same time. Visitors can alternate in and out of the facility throughout the day.

Visitors must come and go using the hospital’s main entrance between the hours of 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

All hospital outpatients and Salina SRHC-affiliated clinic patients also will no longer have age restrictions on visitors/assistants that accompany them to appointments. This includes Emergency

Department patients and outpatients with appointments for surgery, lab, radiology, physical therapy, and other services and doctor’s visits. Hospital outpatients and clinic patients will still be limited to having two visitors/assistants accompany for their appointments.

“Our modification today is aimed at accommodating more families who, for various reasons, would like to have younger children visit or accompany them,” said Bethanie McDowell, infection prevention director at SRHC.

• Visitors will be asked to wear a mask throughout the visit including in hallways, public areas and the patient’s room.

• Visitors will be screened for COVID-19 risk and given an ID bracelet upon entry.

• Inpatient visitors may only enter the hospital main entrance between the hours of 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

• Visitors are not allowed to access the main hospital through the Emergency&nbsp;Department entrance at any time.

• Visitors are welcome to stay as long as they like within routine hospital visiting hours.

• Visitors should remain in the patient’s room as much as possible.

Salina Regional drops age restrictions on visitation

The Saline County Health Department plans to host a Child Care Recruitment Fair Thursday.

The event is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Thursday at 125 W. Elm Street, and is open to the public at no charge.

Those attending will learn about funding, training, and educational opportunities. Additionally, those attending will be able to find information about the availability of childcare center openings, as well as learn how to open their own child care facilities, according to information from the health department.

Child care vendors also will be on hand and door prizes will be awarded.

ABILENE – The number of individuals who have the privilege of working with the President of the United States on a daily basis is rather limited. Even fewer are the number of people who can say their job was to provide direct communications support for the Commander-in-Chief.

Thirteen former members of the White House Communications Agency (WHCA) plan to share their memories when they gather for a reunion next month in Abilene. The public is invited to hear them speak from 7-9 p.m.&nbsp; Sept. 7, at the Abilene Public Library.

These public servants – all military veterans – worked directly with presidents from John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton and, with the exception of Lyndon B. Johnson, everyone in between. The accounts they plan to share are as diverse as the presidents themselves.

Harland Priddle, for example, will discuss planning President Richard Nixon’s historic trip to China and the Soviet Union as well as the Watergate scandal that led to the president’s resignation. Priddle was WHCA deputy commander while serving from 1970-74. He would later become the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture as well as the first Kansas Secretary of Commerce.

Mike Ebbing, who also served during Nixon’s tenure, will present his personal conversations with the president while acting as a switchboard operator. He also will share audio recordings from 50 years ago of conversations from the secret White House tapes.

WHCA is a joint military organization that was established in 1942 to provide direct communications support to the president. The agency has served in this role for the past 80 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It is fitting that this talented group who served seven different presidents would select the hometown of yet another one, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, for their reunion,”&nbsp;said Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland. “Their duty to country – not only as members of the White House Communications Agency but as military veterans – reflects a commitment to service much greater than themselves. On behalf of Governor Laura Kelly and the State of Kansas, I offer our sincere gratitude.”

While in Abilene, the group is planning a visit to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum and will tour the nationally known Seelye Mansion. President Eisenhower’s granddaughter, Mary Jean Eisenhower, will have lunch with the group there. Following lunch, she will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the president’s gravesite.&nbsp;

“We are so glad they are coming to our town,”&nbsp;said Abilene Mayor Dee Marshall. “We love sharing our little city.”

That evening, the lieutenant governor will give opening remarks at the public meeting, which is co-sponsored by the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau and the State of Kansas Tourism Office.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Kansas State Director for Rural Development Christy Davis today announced the USDA is investing $639,854 in critical infrastructure across rural Kansas.

●A&nbsp;$2,157 grant&nbsp;will help replace a furnace and air conditioner at Marmaton Market Inc. in&nbsp;Moran. The HVAC replacement project is estimated to save 9,144 kWh of electricity and 6.9 MCF of natural gas. This equates to 20.4 percent of their energy usage.

●A&nbsp;$10,187 grant&nbsp;will help install a 22.27 kWh rooftop solar photovoltaic system. MWI, LLC is an agriculture irrigation supply company&nbsp;in&nbsp;Hiawatha.&nbsp;This project will realize $3,503.27 per year in savings and generate 31,070 kWh, 88.69 percent of annual usage, enough to power more than 2.5 homes. MWI currently has 10 employees.

 ●A&nbsp;$6,314 grant&nbsp;will help Butler Ranch Operation, LLC, purchase and install a 9 kW rooftop mounted solar array. Butler Ranch Operation is a property rental business based in&nbsp;Andover. ●A&nbsp;$500,000 grant&nbsp;will help purchase a ladder truck for the City of&nbsp;Concordia. The current ladder truck is reaching the end of its useful working life. Once this project is completed, the community will be better prepared to tackle an expected increase in fire events.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Entertainment is scheduled to include prize drawings and toe-tapping music by the group Bob and Friends featuring Bob Delk of Marion County, who celebrated his 100th birthday in early August.

Adopted in November 2020, it included a new vision and mission statement. Its three primary goals are communication skills, critical thinking skills, and social-emotional skills.

In March 2022, the board of education held an open information and listening session that offered insights about how boards of education work. SPS Chats, featuring discussion and district priorities, will be held throughout the school year. Additionally, Exline will gather feedback and input from staff and students at meetings throughout the school year.

Driver injured in two-vehicle wreck in central Salina

More than $6,400 worth of merchandise was purchased Monday on credit and debit cards stolen from a vehicle in a south Salina park.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Peter Browning, 45, of Salina, reported on Tuesday that his financial cards had been stolen from his 2004 Toyota Avalon. Browning discovered that the cards were missing when he attempted to purchase some items and couldn't find the cards.

It is believed the cards were stolen while the car was parked in Jerry Ivey Memorial Park on Monday. Forrester said there was no sign of forced entry.

After checking with the financial card companies, a number of fraudulent purchases, all made on Monday in Salina, were discovered.

One of the cards was used at Dick's Sporting Goods, 2450 S. Ninth Street, to purchase $900 worth of items, Forrester said.

Surveillance video from Dick's showed a man and a woman dressed in casual clothing, hats, and COVID-19 masks using the card. Forrester said the two people were possibly Hispanic.

A bit later, another of Browning's cards was used at GameStop in the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth, to purchase slightly more than $1,700 worth of items, including two Sony PlayStation 5s, two controllers for the PS5s, and several video games.

Then, a card was used at Dunham's Sports, also in the Central Mall, to purchase $700 worth of sunglasses. A short while later, one of Browning's cards was used to make a second purchase in Dunham's. This time, approximately $600 worth of clothing and shoes were purchased.

A bit later, three purchases were made at Dillons, 2350 Planet Avenue. Slightly more than $500 was used to purchase some Red Bull and a VISA gift card. Then, approximately $1,000 was used to purchase Doritos, Cheetos, and two additional VISA gift cards. In the third transaction, slightly more than $1,000 was spent for a snack item and two additional VISA gift cards.

Forrester said that while two people were seen on the surveillance video from Dick's Sporting Goods, it is believed that up to four people were involved in the fraudulent use of the financial cards. He said police are awaiting additional surveillance video to help them determine who used the cards.

This time, approximately $600 worth of clothing and shoes were purchased.A bit later, three purchases were made at Dillons, 2350 Planet Avenue. Slightly more than $500 was used to purchase some Red Bull and a VISA gift card. Then, approximately $1,000 was used to purchase Doritos, Cheetos, and two additional VISA gift cards. In the third transaction, slightly more than $1,000 was spent for a snack item and two additional VISA gift cards.Forrester said that while two people were seen on the surveillance video from Dick's Sporting Goods, it is believed that up to four people were involved in the fraudulent use of the financial cards. He said police are awaiting additional surveillance video to help them determine who used the cards.

During this year’s Battle of the Badges Blood Drive,&nbsp;&nbsp;Salina Police Department and Salina Fire/EMS Department&nbsp;will compete to see who can recruit the most blood donors. Everyone who comes to give blood can cast a vote to determine who wins this year’s bragging rights.&nbsp;

Blood donors will receive an exclusive Battle of the Badges t-Shirt, while supplies last.&nbsp;

Though the need for blood doesn’t let up, donations often decline at this time of year as donors become busy with outdoor activities, schools dismiss for summer, and vacations are planned.&nbsp;

Salina's Battle of the Badges blood drive begins Monday

I give a lot of my time to help young leaders grow and develop through programs like 4-H and FFA. Though my biggest motivation is paying it forward because of all the people who helped me, I also directly benefit from working with these students who are experts on pop culture, new fashion, slang terminology and the latest social media trends. Now that I am solidly a mid-career professional, I sometimes forget how easy it is to lose touch with the changing world. My students are always ready to explain what “Hot Girl Summer” means, why people love the Kardashians and so many other things that might have completely passed over my head otherwise. Earlier this summer, my intern introduced me to one of the hot new social media sites Be Real. This platform prompts users at a random time daily to take and share a quick snapshot of life. Users have 2 minutes to take a snap that includes both front and back facing views. This quick, random time frame doesn’t allow people much time to make themselves or their life look better than reality. It is meant to showcase the mundane, messy and unfiltered reality of your life. After posting your shot you can see what your friends are up to and interact with comments and emoji’s like other social media platforms. If a user fails to snap a picture they miss out on seeing their friends’ posts for the day. At first I thought the idea was super strange, but with time it grew on me. Social media is often criticized for fake and overly glamorous view of many people’s lives, which can lead many users to negative impacts on the mental health of users. Be Real makes it harder to fake a picture-perfect life, showing more realistic and normal views of how we live. It struck me that Be Real is the perfect platform for farmers. There are so many people who have no idea what a farmer does on any given day. Even when someone tours a farm or follows their social media they get a very narrow view that is often the shiny filtered version. If farmers were using Be Real, I am confident that you would occasionally catch a beautiful sunset while checking an irrigator, or a new born baby calf nursing for the first time and some of the other exciting moments in farming. However, more of the snaps would be of the mundane things famers do every day like crawling over or under something to fix a machine, chasing animals that got out of the fence, doing office work, driving back and forth for hours in the same field, running to town to get parts, fueling equipment, fixing fences, checking rain gages or dry fields, looking for bugs, equipment maintenance, putting out a grass fire and a hundred other tasks that happen every day. Plus the farmer would definitely be covered in sweat, oil, dirt or manure in 95 percent of the pictures. If you paid close attention, you would also be able to feel the roller coaster of emotions that exist during a season. The hope of planting, fear caused by weeks of&nbsp; high temperatures and drought, the pain of lost animals and crops, the relief of rain and the pride of completing harvest. Unfortunately, I don’t think many farmers will catch on to this social media trend because they probably wouldn’t hear the notification or be in a place where they had time to get their phone out and take a picture. You will have to take my word for it: farming is as real as it gets.

INSIGHT: Be real with farmers

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 24, the 236th day of 2022. There are 129 days left in the year.

On Aug. 24, A.D. 79, long-dormant Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic ash; an estimated 20,000 people died.

In 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces invaded Washington, D.C., setting fire to the Capitol (which was still under construction) and the White House, as well as other public buildings.

In 1912, Congress passed a measure creating the Alaska Territory.

In 1932, Amelia Earhart embarked on a 19-hour flight from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey, making her the first woman to fly solo, non-stop, from coast to coast.

In 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty came into force.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Communist Control Act, outlawing the Communist Party in the United States.

In 1981, Mark David Chapman was sentenced in New York to 20 years to life in prison for murdering John Lennon. (Chapman remains imprisoned.)

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency wiped out 14 years of Lance Armstrong's cycling career — including his record seven Tour de France titles — and barred him for life from the sport after concluding he'd used banned substances.

Five years ago: Presidential adviser Jared Kushner met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders to try to jumpstart peace talks. Former Carter administration Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus, who engineered the conservation of millions of acres of Alaska land, died at the age of 85. Mavis Wanczyk, a hospital worker from the western Massachusetts town of Chicopee, was announced as the winner of the biggest undivided lottery jackpot in U.S. history, a $758.7 million Powerball prize; lottery officials said she chose to take a lump sum payment of $480 million, or $336 million after taxes.

One year ago: President Joe Biden said he would stick to his Aug. 31 deadline for completing a risky airlift of Americans, endangered Afghans and others seeking to escape Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Kathy Hochul became New York's first female governor after the resignation of Andrew Cuomo took effect; on her first day in office, Hochul acknowledged that the state had nearly 12,000 more deaths from COVID-19 than Cuomo had told the public. Former football star Herschel Walker filed paperwork to enter the U.S. Senate race in Georgia after months of speculation; the Republican had the backing of former President Donald Trump.
