Salina Art Center has been awarded an Arts Engagement in American Communities (AEAC) Grant through the National Endowment for the Arts to fund opportunities for youth art makers to use art as a catalyst for discussing issues of relevance and significance to their generation.&nbsp;

The first project funded is the A.R.T (Art, Reflection, &amp; Thinking) mentorship program for middle and high school students. This is a free afterschool program for students referred by a teacher, counselor, or another adult. Created in the late 1990s as a program for at-risk students, A.R.T has evolved to include quality art instruction, flexible scheduling, and a diverse group of students interested in developing artistic skills. 

USD 305 is a long-standing partner with Salina Art Center to provide quality afterschool programming along with OCCK, which provides transportation from South High School, Central High School, Lakewood Middle School, and South Middle School to the Art Center Warehouse Education Studio at no charge to A.R.T. students.

A.R.T. is a FREE program for middle and high school referred students. Only 15 students are accepted per session. Students who participate in A.R.T will:

●Develop artistic skills in a variety of mediums

●Work and learn with local and regional artists as they show you how they make art and why

●Explore and experiment with a variety of art materials and processes

●Develop and express independent ideas and discuss them

●Learn how to set and meet their own goals

●Bringing awareness and healing to emotional, mental, and physical issues through art-making

●Engage in a therapeutic release from everyday life and surroundings

●Empower positivity about self and others.

This year has brought some changes to the A.R.T. program. The most significant is in the schedule.&nbsp;Instead of a full-year class, students will have the opportunity to participate in any/all three sessions. Sessions are timed in tandem with the Kansas High School Athletics Association season calendar. This allows students to be athletes and artists by choosing A.R.T. sessions that align with their athletic seasons.

The three sessions of A.R.T. will thematically fall into how art is used as a catalyst for storytelling, mental wellness, and social impact.

Session 1: A.R.T. of Animation. Using film animation to share stories of who we are and where we are going.

Session 2: A.R.T. of Sculpture. Using sculptural techniques (ceramics, paper, and found objects) to connect to self and transform emotions.

Session 3: A.R.T. of Social Justice. Exploring street artists and gorilla art techniques used to draw attention to issues of social relevance.

The Sunflower Biennial is a juried exhibition of visual art to recognize artists in Kansas, associated with secondary and post-secondary programs, for dedication, achievement, and contribution to exchanges that reveal life.

This year's exhibition will be adjudicated by Wichita-based artists Patrick Duegaw and Elizabeth Stevenson. 

Exhibition programming highlights many artists, allowing them to lead workshops or give gallery talks about their work and future plans. Contemporary art deals with current issues. The art center provides young artists an opportunity to share what is current in their world. The Sunflower Biennial is a platform that encourages exchanges of ideas and respect. The exhibition allows young artists to gain experience with exhibition submissions, building a portfolio, public speaking, marketing their talents, and much more.&nbsp;

The Sunflower Biennial call for entry will be released on Sept. 6 with an entry deadline of Nov. 30. The Third Sunflower Biennial is scheduled to open on Feb. 8. Salina Art Center receives grant for youth art maker opportunities

🎥Sunflowers offer important lesson for Oakdale students

ABILENE—The 12th annual Impact the Cure event is Oct. 1, and this year will have some changes from past events. 

For 2022, the event will be solely the two mile Fun Walk and it will be held in Old Abilene Town as the kick-off to the community celebration of the 100th birthday for Memorial Hospital.

Impact the Cure is an annual Breast Cancer Awareness event in Abilene hosted by Impact Sports and Fitness of Abilene. The walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 1, starting and ending at Old Abilene Town, 201 SE. Fifth Street, and is open to people of all ages and fitness levels. 

Walk day registration and packet pick-up will begin at 10 a.m. An informal ceremony at 10:15 a.m. will recognize cancer survivors as a group; survivors will receive a special gift (please note on the registration form if you are a cancer survivor). The walk is then scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. This is a fun way for all ages to celebrate life and raise funds to help fight breast cancer in Dickinson County.

Pre-registration is $25 and includes an Impact the Cure long-sleeve t-shirt and a $5 food coupon to use at participating truck vendors beginning at noon. The Saline County Road and Bridge Department announced this morning that S. Simpson Road between E. Magnolia Road and E. Crawford Street is now open to through traffic.

That portion of S. Simpson Road was closed on May 6 due to a federally funded project to improve the S. Simpson Road right-of-way. 

The completion of the project was delayed earlier this month due to shipping issues with the aggregate material to be used on the shoulders of the roadway.

An officer on patrol found several areas within the park had been vandalized by spray paint over the weekend. An unknown suspect(s) spray-painted derogatory words and pictures on the walls of the concession stand, maintenance building, and various other signs in the park.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. ●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.&nbsp;

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&nbsp;watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.&nbsp;. Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.&nbsp;

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.&nbsp;

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Attorneys for a Colorado woman accused of killing her 11-year-old stepson in 2020 have requested a second evaluation of her mental health after the judge in the case received a state evaluation.

Letecia Stauch has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of Gannon Stauch.&nbsp;After her March 2020 arrest in South Carolina Stauch was held in the Saline County, Kansas jail on her return to Colorado.

Fourth Judicial District Judge Gregory Werner set a Sept. 15 hearing after defense attorneys challenged the state report and requested that Stauch be evaluated again by defense-appointed psychiatrists,&nbsp;<a href="https://gazette.com/news/courts/letecia-stauch-deemed-sane-in-mental-health-evaluation-but-trial-on-hold/article_113ac830-247b-11ed-9969-2744676d63c6.html">The Gazette reported</a>.

The report on the sanity evaluation at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo wasn't released.

Prosecutors last year presented alleged evidence linking Stauch to the January 2020 murder. They said that investigators found Gannon’s blood on Stauch’s shoe, found her DNA on a gun linked to his death and learned that she traveled to the Florida Panhandle shortly after he disappeared. The child’s remains were found there in March 2020, authorities have said.

Defense attorneys had sought to create doubt that Stauch committed the murder by suggesting someone else could have entered their Colorado Springs home around the time Gannon died.

Stauch is charged with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, tampering with a deceased human body and tampering with physical evidence.

After her March 2020 arrest in South Carolina Stauch was held in the Saline County jail on her return to Colorado.

Kansas Wesleyan University president Matt Thompson has been named to the Kansas Advisory Committee of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, a national non-profit dedicated to strengthening American development and diplomacy.&nbsp;

The grassroots portion of the USGLC is a series of 32 state advisory committees consisting of local leaders from those particular states. The long-awaited elevator renovation is beginning at the Dickinson County Courthouse this week, and is expected to take approximately 12 weeks.

While the stairs still are available, people who need assistance to reach the top floor should let the security guards at the entrance know and arrangements will be made to transport them using the jail elevator.

Dickinson County District Court and the Dickinson County Attorney’s office are located on the top floor.

Visitors needing elevator access to basement offices - including the appraiser, planning and zoning, emergency management and GIS (Geographic Information Services) - should call those departments to make arrangements.

The appraiser’s office can be reached at (785) 263-4418; planning and zoning at (785) 263-4464; emergency management at (785) 263-3608; and GIS at (785) 263-3120.

Other departments in the courthouse will not be affected by the elevator renovation.

AT&amp;T continues to place underground fiber optic line throughout our community. The fiber optic cabling and related facilities will connect existing cell towers and future 5G cell towers providing better cell service and high speed networks.

Construction for the project is being performed in phases throughout the city which requires contractors to return to some locations multiple times throughout the installation process so work may be completed in individual steps.

The phasing for project construction is outlined as follows:

· Contractor investigates affected properties to determine easement areas for placing buried facilities

· Contractor may hydrovac or pothole below ground surface to determine depths of existing utilities

· Contractor will place conduit of varying sizes via boring or trenching depending on how many cables will be placed in a particular run

· When the conduit for the area is placed, contractor will pull the fiber into its designated passage

· Once the fiber is installed, contractor will return to locations needing an underground vault and will secure the fiber loops inside an embedded, ground level utility box

· Contractor will then restore and repair soil with seeding around the disturbed areas

· Finally, AT&amp;T personnel will be mobilized to connect and splice what is needed for customer service connections

In some locations, AT&amp;T will place aerial fiber on existing utility poles with connections buried when needed to tie into the main fiber feeder lines.

Work will be mainly in grass areas with minimal sidewalk closures. No road closures are expected at this time.
