Police are looking for the person who allegedly pulled out a gun while confronting a man at a northwest Salina car wash Saturday afternoon.

A 23-year-old Salina man told police that he was driving northbound on S. Broadway Boulevard from W. South Street at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday when he encountered a white pickup that was driving erratically, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The man followed the pickup to StuJo's Car Wash, 120 N. Broadway Boulevard.

Forrester said that while the man was taking photos of the pickup and its license plate, the driver got out and asked whether the man had a problem. The driver also allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and held it at his side while confronting the man who had followed him.

The man left the carwash and then reported the incident to the police, Forrester said.

It is quite obvious that the earth is flat. Just look out your land see it. Flat!&nbsp; That is the current logic that anti-trans folks—and many political advertisements—are currently asserting in their protests that “biological males” are competing in women’s sports.

The earth is not flat. That was recognized over 2000 years ago by Eratosthenes in Alexandria, Egypt. He noticed that a flagpole left no shadow in Syene but did leave a shadow in Alexandria. He measured the shadow angle and calculated the circumference of a round earth. He came very close! &nbsp;

Those who claim that anatomy alone determines “biological males” are making the same mistake as those who point out the earth is obviously flat. There are many factors involved. And while anatomy is one factor, there are cases where, upon a baby’s birth, the obstetrician cannot declare “it’s a boy” or “it’s a girl” but must say “I’ll get back to you on this” because the anatomy is ambiguous.

XX or XY chromosomes are another factor. The Y-chromosome carries the genes that direct development to become a male. Without the Y-chromosome SRY region, a female develops. But there are also exceptions including XO (only the X-chromosome), XXY, XYY, etc.

The amount of male testosterone and female estrogen hormones—and their proportions—also vary greatly. Testosterone promotes facial hair, broad shoulders, muscle growth, aggression, etc. It is produced in small quantities in the adrenal glands of both men and women, but in 20 times larger quantity in testes after puberty. Estrogens are produced in female ovaries and in the fat tissue in both males and females. Just look around at the men and women in the population and you will see that there has always been a wide variation among people due to normal variations in hormone balance.

Heavier boys who go through puberty have more fat and therefore more estrogen and some may never develop a low pitch voice. Some girls with broader shoulders and more athletic build may have higher testosterone levels, and be more aggressive in sports. This variation has always been there. But “tomboy” girls and effeminate boys have often suffered in our simple-minded society.

John Money was a pioneer researcher at the Psychohormonal Research Unit at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. With his medical team, he was able to document and treat many cases where chromosomes, hormones and anatomy varied from "normal.” But he also had cases where very young children were distressed with their assignment—they felt their parents and doctors had made a mistake. They “felt” female when their anatomy was male, or the opposite. In 1955, John Money borrowed the term “gender” for this feeling of being masculine or feminine that was unrelated to who they would be attracted to later after puberty. This feeling of gender was expressed by age six and was permanent; it did not change day-to-day. However, Money did not know if gender identity formed in the brain before or after birth.

This question would be answered by Dr. Dick Swaab and his research team in the Netherlands. They followed up on research by Roger Gorski at U.C.L.A. who had injected testosterone into pregnant rats and discovered the female offspring acted male. Gorski then located a region in rat brains that was different between normal male and female rats, but the female rats who had received the testosterone as a late stage fetus had developed a male brain region. Swaab’s team examined brain bank donations from deceased individuals who were both “normal” and transgender and discovered a similar difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Today we know that if transgender children receive the surgery and hormone replacement early, they will develop the muscle anatomy, etc. that conforms with their brain gender and can live a normal life, including fair sports participation. But it is very important that such young candidates be carefully screened to separate out other psychological factors unrelated to gender identity.

But long before this science of biological differentiation was discovered, ranchers already knew there was a fairly wide range of bulls and cows. When it was time to pick another bull to breed the next season, it was obvious that not all of the potential young bulls were equally masculine. And there were some cows that rejected their calves, and others that had more masculine physical traits and behaviors.

It takes time for doctors and biology teachers to update their training, and for biology books to carry this newer science. But it has been 2000 years since we learned the earth is not flat, and many politicians apparently need that longer time to get their message right.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Did you know we spend a third of our lives at work? Our careers have a huge impact on our&nbsp;overall well-being&nbsp;and life satisfaction. So, if you’re experiencing a hostile work environment or being bullied at work, you owe it to yourself and those around you to take immediate action to put yourself, and your co-workers, in a better, safer place.

Bullies in the workplace can be anyone—coworkers, supervisors, contractors, clients—who behaves in offensive or aggressive ways. The common theme is the offender’s pattern of treating others with unwanted behaviors or disrespect over time. You’re always going to come face-to-face with other people’s annoying quirks and habits, but someone’s annoying laugh or need to have a certain kind of pen aren’t exactly hostile behavior.

A hostile work environment is a workplace where harassment, discrimination and/or abuse hamper an employee’s job performance or create an offensive or intimidating environment. These words or actions aren’t just single, misplaced instances. It’s when someone’s repeated bullying creates an environment of hostility over time, and prevents the individual—or the team—from&nbsp;feeling respected and safe.

Some examples of illegal workplace harassment include:

●Giving unwanted romantic or sexual attention. 

●Sharing content or images that are inappropriate for a workplace setting. 

●Repeating inappropriate jokes that discriminate against someone’s age, gender, religion, race, sexual orientation or nationality.

In addition, a hostile work environment affects more than just the person being targeted. This behavior creates&nbsp;a toxic situation&nbsp;that causes discomfort and distraction for others who see or hear it.&nbsp;

If you or a coworker experience workplace harassment, the first step to end the bullying is to ask them to stop the behavior that’s making you uncomfortable. If you feel intimidated by the person in question, go directly to your supervisor, or the company’s human resources department.

After you report hostile behavior or discrimination, it’s the employer’s responsibility to address the problem and make sure it’s resolved quickly.

If you dread going to work&nbsp;because your employer isn’t willing or able to stop harassment, organizations like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) can step in. But remember, reporting a claim to the EEOC is serious business—one where the burden of proof falls on the victim. You must&nbsp;prove&nbsp;the discrimination is unwelcome, severe and stands between you and success in your career.&nbsp;

You’re always going to come face-to-face with other people’s annoying quirks and habits, but someone’s annoying laugh or need to have a certain kind of pen aren’t exactly hostile behavior.A hostile work environment is a workplace where harassment, discrimination and/or abuse hamper an employee’s job performance or create an offensive or intimidating environment. These words or actions aren’t just single, misplaced instances. It’s when someone’s repeated bullying creates an environment of hostility over time, and prevents the individual—or the team—from&nbsp;feeling respected and safe.Some examples of illegal workplace harassment include:●Making verbal or physical threats. ●Giving unwanted romantic or sexual attention. ●Sharing content or images that are inappropriate for a workplace setting. ●Calling people rude names. ●Repeating inappropriate jokes that discriminate against someone’s age, gender, religion, race, sexual orientation or nationality.In addition, a hostile work environment affects more than just the person being targeted. This behavior creates&nbsp;a toxic situation&nbsp;that causes discomfort and distraction for others who see or hear it.&nbsp;If you or a coworker experience workplace harassment, the first step to end the bullying is to ask them to stop the behavior that’s making you uncomfortable. If you feel intimidated by the person in question, go directly to your supervisor, or the company’s human resources department.After you report hostile behavior or discrimination, it’s the employer’s responsibility to address the problem and make sure it’s resolved quickly.If you dread going to work&nbsp;because your employer isn’t willing or able to stop harassment, organizations like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) can step in. But remember, reporting a claim to the EEOC is serious business—one where the burden of proof falls on the victim. Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) has been awarded a four-year, $4 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). 

CKMHC will receive $1 million/year over four years to continue the implementation of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) model of care.

Funding will support the expansion of required CCBHC best practices and introduce new programs. This includes expanding co-responders, establishing a mobile crisis team, providing community education and outreach, and continuing to attract and grow professional staff. These programs will increase access to care, facilitate crisis intervention, and improve care coordination for patients.

“This is an exciting step forward,” stated Glenna Phillips, CKMHC’s Executive Director. “We are growing quickly to meet the demand for care. Funding will provide vital capacity for mental health and substance care, and build the infrastructure required to meet the rising need, while integrating within the health care system and community support services.”

Phillips stresses that this funding will have far-reaching impact. “As an organization we understand that mental health care happens wherever a person is, and we know that mental health crises require a community-wide response,” she said. “This grant is really outward-focused, it will help us solidify partnerships and provide holistic, integrated, and community-based care to those in need.”

Jennifer Kaufman, CCBHC Project Director, has been an integral part of the CCBHC transition from the beginning. “CKMHC has worked hard for the past 18 months to successfully implement the CCBHC model of care,” she said. “SAMHSA funding allows us to continue to refine processes, revitalize services we know our community needs, and ensure sustainability when grant funding ends. We look forward to strengthening our community partnerships as we continue this transformational process.”

CKMHC began the transition to a CCBHC in 2021 with support from a two-year SAMHSA grant. At that time the State of Kansas also committed to the CCBHC model

with the signing of HB 2208. The Kansas Department of Aging and Disabilities (KDADS), which administers the CCBHC program statewide, hopes that all 26 of Kansas’ Community Mental Health Centers will be CCBHCs by the end of 2024.

CKMHC’s initial SAMHSA grant will end in early 2023, but the two-year funding has supported the implementation of new services and has increased CKMHC staff to meet growing needs. New services include Same Day Access and Patient Navigators, and staff has continued to grow to over 160. CKMHC received provisional CCBHC licensure from KDADS in May of 2022.

CONCORDIA - Cloud County Community College will be offering adult education and GED classes in October in Concordia and Junction City.

The Adult Education program at CCCC offers an adult learning atmosphere to gain skills necessary for success at home and in the workplace. The classes are open to individuals 16 and older who are not enrolled in school. Basic skills and diploma preparation classes are offered afternoons and evenings in Concordia, and mornings, afternoons, and evenings in Junction City to accommodate working adults’ schedules. Classes are small with both classroom and computer instruction.

Those who attend can also improve on basic skills in everyday reading, math and English, as well as learn employability skills while earning WorkReady Credentials. Computer skills are also a part of the courses, where students can gain basic Microsoft Word and Internet skills, and also earn technology certificates.

GED test preparation instruction is also available at both locations. The centers are located at CCCC’s Concordia campus and at the Geary County campus in Junction. All students must attend orientation before enrolling in classes. Students are to call for an orientation appointment. For Junction City, orientation appointments can be made for October 11 and 12, and for Concordia, orientation appointments can be made for October 12 and 13. There’s no shortage of passionate opinions about cancel culture.

●Cancel culture is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.city-journal.org/cancel-culture-generational-divide">on the rise</a>. Cancel culture&nbsp;isn’t real.

●Canceling&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/8xb9x5/logan-paul-and-the-myth-of-cancel-culture">has little to no effect on the canceled</a>. Canceling&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/living/story/canceled-destroyed-life-68311913">ruins lives</a>.

●Cancel culture is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thebulwark.com/what-cancel-culture-is-and-isnt/">a threat to free speech</a>. Cancel culture <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/civil-rights/542711-cancel-culture-is-just-free-speech-holding-others-accountable/">is&nbsp;just speech holding others accountable</a>.

There isn’t agreement on what “canceling” means.

Cancel culture, as defined by Dictionary.com, is “the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive.”

It’s a simple but extremely broad concept, and it’s difficult to determine its limits.

Does any kind of public backlash or reputational damage count as being canceled, or does it need to rise to a certain level? Does it have to be permanent? Can you be canceled by just a few people? Does cancellation have to involve an organized campaign, or can the term just apply to widespread, uncoordinated criticism? Can you cancel someone who has no public reputation? Can you cancel someone who’s already dead?

All of these questions and more mean that many discussions about cancel culture devolve into arguments over whether or not a particular person was really canceled — which side steps questions of whether, and under what circumstances, cancellation is right or wrong.

Cancel culture can be hostile to free speech — but it also is free speech.

To be clear: Cancel culture doesn’t violate the First Amendment, because the First Amendment only protects against the government punishing speech and doesn’t apply to what private individuals do. But it impacts something the First Amendment is meant to protect: free expression. If a fear of being canceled causes people to self-censor, that harms the public discourse.

A good example of this would be the case of&nbsp;David Shor, a polling researcher who sent a tweet in May 2020 summarizing an academic paper that compared the effects of nonviolent and violent protests on election turnouts.&nbsp;Ari Trujillo-Wesler, co-founder of deep canvassing app OpenField, criticized the tweet for “minimizing black grief and rage to ‘bad campaign tactic for the Democrats’” and later said the academic paper’s analysis was “sloppy and underwhelming.” Regardless of whether you agree with Shor, Trujillo-Wesler, neither, or both, this Twitter conversation enriched the public dialogue about the intersection of race, politics, social movements and public opinion. But because&nbsp;<a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/06/case-for-liberalism-tom-cotton-new-york-times-james-bennet.html" target="_blank">Shor was fired from his job</a>&nbsp;shortly afterward, discussions like these are less likely to occur in the future. People like Shor will hesitate to weigh in on current events, and the public discourse will be poorer for it.

More than four in 10 people (45%) say they have, at least once, not expressed an opinion for fear of punishment, the Freedom Forum found in its&nbsp;<a href="https://survey.freedomforum.org/speech/" target="_blank">Where America Stands survey</a>. Nearly half (49%) have never shared a political opinion on social media.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At the same time, I’m not ready to declare that cancel culture is the enemy of free speech. It is, in essence, speech responding to other speech.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/30/20879720/what-is-cancel-culture-explained-history-debate" target="_blank">To quote internet culture reporter&nbsp;Aja Romano’s&nbsp;excellent explainer on the topic</a>: “To many people, this process of publicly calling for accountability, and boycotting if nothing else seems to work, has become an important tool of social justice — a way of combatting, through collective action, some of the huge power imbalances that often exist between public figures with far-reaching platforms and audiences, and the people and communities their words and actions may harm.”

Viewed in this light, cancel culture can actually play an important role in the democratic process. For instance, former New York governor&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/03/andrew-cuomo-cancel-culture" target="_blank">Andrew Cuomo&nbsp;described it as cancel culture when people called for him to resign</a>&nbsp;after reports were released that he covered up COVID-19 nursing home deaths and that several women had made allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Under the dictionary definition of cancel culture, Cuomo was right, but it’s hard to argue that exposing the wrongdoing of an elected official and holding him accountable cuts against the values of free expression. If anything, it’s exactly the kind of discourse the First Amendment was meant to protect.

It’s hard to gauge how prevalent or how powerful cancel culture really is.

Writers like&nbsp;Michael Hobbes&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href="https://michaelhobbes.substack.com/p/moral-panic-journalism" target="_blank">argued that the panic about cancel culture is overblown</a>&nbsp;and that media coverage of cancellations make them seem much more common than they actually are. This is a fair point. Incidents of cancel culture are probably overrepresented in the news because, let’s face it, cancel culture is more fun to read and write about than say, the politics of judicial elections (<a href="https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/politics-judicial-elections-2019-20" target="_blank">which you should probably read about after this</a>). Still, that heightened awareness of cancel culture is likely to end up feeding its chilling effect on speech.

It’s also been argued that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/2021-proved-once-and-for-all-that-cancel-culture-is-total-bullshit?ref=scroll" target="_blank">canceI culture is a myth, because cancellations don’t stick</a>. People like&nbsp;Dave Chappelle,&nbsp;Louis C.K.&nbsp;and&nbsp;Morgan Wallen&nbsp;are often trotted out as examples of supposedly canceled celebrities who are still making a good living. But social media has made it possible to cancel even people who are not famous, and these people tend to have fewer resources to defend themselves or recover from cancellation. It can also depend on who is doing the canceling. Being canceled by liberal groups only made conservative provocateur&nbsp;Milo Yiannopoulos’&nbsp;brand stronger, but cancellation by the Conservative Political Action Conference effectively ended his career.

Just over a third (37%) of people say there’s nothing wrong with celebrities or others with strong opinions getting boycotted or “cancelled” for making controversial comments online or in public, the&nbsp;<a href="https://survey.freedomforum.org/speech/" target="_blank">Where America Stands survey</a>&nbsp;found. Nearly three in 10 weren’t sure.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Canceling individuals won’t create real, lasting change — but holding institutions accountable might.

Separate from the debate over whether cancel culture is right or wrong or pro- or anti-free speech, is the question of whether it works as a tool for political and social change.&nbsp;<a href="https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/canceling-is-powerless" target="_blank">As writer&nbsp;Freddie deBoer&nbsp;asks</a>: “What is a plausible scenario through which [canceling] actually impacts the issues people claim to care about? How do you actually cancel your way to a better world? …If problems are structural they can’t be fixed with the removal of individuals.”

The examples of cancellations that created lasting change that come to my mind are the civil rights movement’s boycotts of segregated businesses and government institutions like Montgomery’s bus system and New York City’s schools. There’s a lesson in that: Structural problems need structural solutions. Firing or shaming a few people is unlikely to even put a dent in those problems.

Cancel culture <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/civil-rights/542711-cancel-culture-is-just-free-speech-holding-others-accountable/">is&nbsp;just speech holding others accountable</a>.There isn’t agreement on what “canceling” means.<div><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YpBjfOp5t8U" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>Cancel culture, as defined by Dictionary.com, is “the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive.”It’s a simple but extremely broad concept, and it’s difficult to determine its limits.Does any kind of public backlash or reputational damage count as being canceled, or does it need to rise to a certain level? Does it have to be permanent? Can you be canceled by just a few people? Does cancellation have to involve an organized campaign, or can the term just apply to widespread, uncoordinated criticism? Can you cancel someone who has no public reputation? Can you cancel someone who’s already dead?All of these questions and more mean that many discussions about cancel culture devolve into arguments over whether or not a particular person was really canceled — which side steps questions of whether, and under what circumstances, cancellation is right or wrong.Cancel culture can be hostile to free speech — but it also is free speech.To be clear: Cancel culture doesn’t violate the First Amendment, because the First Amendment only protects against the government punishing speech and doesn’t apply to what private individuals do. But it impacts something the First Amendment is meant to protect: free expression. If a fear of being canceled causes people to self-censor, that harms the public discourse.A good example of this would be the case of&nbsp;David Shor, a polling researcher who sent a tweet in May 2020 summarizing an academic paper that compared the effects of nonviolent and violent protests on election turnouts.&nbsp;Ari Trujillo-Wesler, co-founder of deep canvassing app OpenField, criticized the tweet for “minimizing black grief and rage to ‘bad campaign tactic for the Democrats’” and later said the academic paper’s analysis was “sloppy and underwhelming.” Regardless of whether you agree with Shor, Trujillo-Wesler, neither, or both, this Twitter conversation enriched the public dialogue about the intersection of race, politics, social movements and public opinion. But because&nbsp;<a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/06/case-for-liberalism-tom-cotton-new-york-times-james-bennet.html" target="_blank">Shor was fired from his job</a>&nbsp;shortly afterward, discussions like these are less likely to occur in the future. People like Shor will hesitate to weigh in on current events, and the public discourse will be poorer for it.More than four in 10 people (45%) say they have, at least once, not expressed an opinion for fear of punishment, the Freedom Forum found in its&nbsp;<a href="https://survey.freedomforum.org/speech/" target="_blank">Where America Stands survey</a>. Nearly half (49%) have never shared a political opinion on social media.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the same time, I’m not ready to declare that cancel culture is the enemy of free speech. It is, in essence, speech responding to other speech.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/30/20879720/what-is-cancel-culture-explained-history-debate" target="_blank">To quote internet culture reporter&nbsp;Aja Romano’s&nbsp;excellent explainer on the topic</a>: “To many people, this process of publicly calling for accountability, and boycotting if nothing else seems to work, has become an important tool of social justice — a way of combatting, through collective action, some of the huge power imbalances that often exist between public figures with far-reaching platforms and audiences, and the people and communities their words and actions may harm.”Viewed in this light, cancel culture can actually play an important role in the democratic process. For instance, former New York governor&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/03/andrew-cuomo-cancel-culture" target="_blank">Andrew Cuomo&nbsp;described it as cancel culture when people called for him to resign</a>&nbsp;after reports were released that he covered up COVID-19 nursing home deaths and that several women had made allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Under the dictionary definition of cancel culture, Cuomo was right, but it’s hard to argue that exposing the wrongdoing of an elected official and holding him accountable cuts against the values of free expression. If anything, it’s exactly the kind of discourse the First Amendment was meant to protect.It’s hard to gauge how prevalent or how powerful cancel culture really is.Writers like&nbsp;Michael Hobbes&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href="https://michaelhobbes.substack.com/p/moral-panic-journalism" target="_blank">argued that the panic about cancel culture is overblown</a>&nbsp;and that media coverage of cancellations make them seem much more common than they actually are. This is a fair point. Saline County has announced drainage work that will necessitate the closing of parts of two roads beginning Monday.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department plans to close S. Woodward Road between E. Cloud Street and E. Crawford Street, as well as S. Muir Road between W. Smolan Road and W. McReynolds Road Monday through Friday so that crews can replace drainage structures in those areas.

The department encourages motorists to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will always have access to private property within the sections of the closed road from the side upon which the property lies, the department noted.

"The Road and Bridge Department understands the public’s frustration and inconvenience with closing a road. However, road closures are necessary to maintain the county’s infrastructure so that Saline County can have a reliable road network," the department wrote in a news release. "Driving around road closure barricades is not just unlawful but extremely unsafe. For your safety and the safety of the construction workers, please obey all traffic signs. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Some grass species benefit from mowing at higher end heading into winter

MANHATTAN — While opinions vary on how high to mow the home’s lawn as the fall temperatures lower, Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham shares the science behind why certain species of grass should be kept short in the cold temperatures.&nbsp;

He said winter tolerance differs among warm-season and cool-season grasses, but both benefit from healthy maintenance practices, including fertilizing, watering and mowing during the spring, summer and fall. &nbsp;

“Cold tolerance is improved by increasing the health of the plants going into the winter, and healthy plants are a result of a sound management program,” Upham said.&nbsp;

The recommended lawn height (in inches) for homeowners in Kansas is as follows.

“The lawn will benefit more from continuing to mow at the recommended height than from trying to gain some insulation against winter cold by allowing it to grow tall,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Some variability in the recommended lawn height is beneficial to certain grasses throughout the year. &nbsp;

“For example, it is a good practice to mow warm-season grasses at the higher end of recommended heights during late summer and early fall because this practice should help them store more carbohydrate reserves for the winter, and it may reduce the incidence of certain cool-weather diseases,” he said.&nbsp;

 </figure><h2>Some grass species benefit from mowing at higher end heading into winter</h2>By MADDY ROHR K-State Research and Extension News Service&nbsp;MANHATTAN — While opinions vary on how high to mow the home’s lawn as the fall temperatures lower, Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham shares the science behind why certain species of grass should be kept short in the cold temperatures.&nbsp;He said winter tolerance differs among warm-season and cool-season grasses, but both benefit from healthy maintenance practices, including fertilizing, watering and mowing during the spring, summer and fall. &nbsp;“Cold tolerance is improved by increasing the health of the plants going into the winter, and healthy plants are a result of a sound management program,” Upham said.&nbsp;The recommended lawn height (in inches) for homeowners in Kansas is as follows.Tall fescue: 2.5-3.5Kentucky bluegrass: 2-3Buffalo grass: 2-3Bermudagrass: 1-2Zoysiagrass: 1-2&nbsp;“The lawn will benefit more from continuing to mow at the recommended height than from trying to gain some insulation against winter cold by allowing it to grow tall,” Upham said.&nbsp;Some variability in the recommended lawn height is beneficial to certain grasses throughout the year. &nbsp;“For example, it is a good practice to mow warm-season grasses at the higher end of recommended heights during late summer and early fall because this practice should help them store more carbohydrate reserves for the winter, and it may reduce the incidence of certain cool-weather diseases,” he said.&nbsp;Upham and his colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html" target="_blank">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. Lewis grew up in Oklahoma, taught and completed her PhD in Nebraska, and has lived in Lindsborg since 1987. During her 27-year tenure in Bethany's Department of English, she taught a smorgasbord of courses - mostly in writing and British literature. During that time, she authored four books and many scholarly articles on English authors and literary texts. Three years ago, she published&nbsp;Ensemble, her first collection of poetry.

Amy Taylor Norton is an Assistant Attorney General for the Kansas Attorney General Office’s Criminal Litigation Division. She earned her juris doctor from the Washburn University School of Law.
