For one day only, Saline County residents will be able to use the landfill free of charge for residential trash disposal.

The free day is scheduled for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill, 4292 S. Burma Road, according to information from the City of Salina.

The landfill will close promptly at 2 p.m. Customers will not be permitted entrance after closing, even if a line is still present. Normal business hours and fees will resume Oct. 10. 

Customers must have Saline County license plates on their vehicles for free disposal. Vehicles from other counties will be required to pay normal tipping fees. Commercial waste haulers will be given priority (standard rates apply), the city noted.

"Customers are encouraged to use caution at all times, follow staff instructions, obey all signs, stay on approved roadways and be prepared for delays, as a line is expected to form during this event and the number of customers will be limited at the disposal site and convenience area. Removal of any landfill property, including waste from other customers, is strictly prohibited," the city reported in a news release.

There are, however, some items that will not be accepted, including the following.

"Items accepted, but still subject to applicable tipping fees for all commercial and residential customers include brick, concrete, rock, other aggregates, commercial loads (including waste from residents that is anything other than normal household trash), Freon-containing items (Freon removal certification required), roofing &amp; other construction materials, boats, sheds, trailers, tires, and waste requiring a Special Waste Permit from the KDHE," the city noted.

The Life Insurance Policy Locator is a free service provided by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Individuals can perform a nationwide search for missing life insurance funds by providing the social security number, legal first name, legal last name, date of birth and date of death of a deceased individual. Millions in life insurance funds still unclaimed in Kansas

Having shared a love of languages for over 30 years, Jan Denning is the recipient of the 2022 Phyllis Farrar Leadership Award, presented by the Kansas World Language Association (KSWLA).&nbsp;

The KSWLA presents this award to individuals in Kansas who have made outstanding contributions over time to the profession of teaching world languages.&nbsp;

Jan, now retired, taught French and sometimes Spanish at Central High School (CHS). Her upper level courses also included students from South High School. During her time as a teacher, Jan held many leadership roles including being a part of the building’s leadership team, mentor program and served as the chair of the language department.&nbsp;

Jan remembers teaching fondly. “I loved working with so many amazing students. They all had an impact on me”, said Jan. A graduate of CHS herself, Jan’s commitment to her school and her students included making 10 different trips to Paris with students. “Learning a world language helps you to understand other cultures and to learn to respect the differences. It opens your mind to other people and other languages.”

Jan’s influence reaches beyond Salina Public Schools as she was instrumental in bringing the Seal of Biliteracy program to school districts across Kansas. As a member of the Kansas World Language Advisory Council from 2008 to 2016, she helped write the proposal to the State Board of Education for the adoption of the Seal of Biliteracy program. Since its adoption, Jan served as the coordinator at CHS from 2017 to 2022. In 2018, Jan also began serving on the Advisory Council for the Seal of Biliteracy program and advised the implementation of the program in&nbsp; numerous school districts.

Jan knows that with the Seal of Biliteracy program, “Our students are able to demonstrate proficiency in a language, which helps them in post-secondary studies, jobs and the military. Plus, learning a language is fun!”&nbsp;

Jan’s dedication to sharing her love of language has left an impact on her students at CHS and students across Kansas. We are proud that Jan chose to serve our students with her talents, passion and leadership as part of our team of great teachers inspiring great futures. Congratulations Jan on your award!

He sold that business in 1901 and bought another store in Abilene selling a “little bit of everything.” Along with his brother Wilbur, Duckwall expanded the business and it became one of the most popular five and dime stores in Kansas and other states. TOPEKA – Two Salina organizations have been awarded $108,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.

The grants were awarded to support the following programs:

●Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc.,&nbsp;$32,500 to increase support of child abuse victims through increased advocacy.

●Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc.,&nbsp;$9,000, to sustain 24/7 advocacy support and operations of the child advocacy center.

●Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc.,&nbsp;$4,000&nbsp;for operating expenditures for children’s advocacy centers.

●Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas,&nbsp;$12,500 to provide temporary emergency shelter and trauma-informed support services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, as well as their dependent children, in order to meet their immediate health and safety needs. Educational services will also continue to be provided to reduce the incidence of domestic and sexual violence.

●Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, $50,000 to support ongoing operating expenses of the domestic violence/sexual assault center.

“Organizations across Kansas do great work every day to support victims of crime,” Schmidt said. “We are proud to support these organizations through the victim services grant programs.”

The awards were made from the Protection from Abuse Fund, the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund, the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund for Child Abuse and Neglect, and the Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund. The Protection from Abuse Fund is funded by State General Fund appropriations, marriage license fees, county court costs and municipal court assessments. The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts. The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund for Child Abuse and Neglect Fund is funded through county court costs, municipal court assessments and State General Fund appropriations. The Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts.

This year, the attorney general’s office awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to local and state crime victim assistance organizations. Kansas Attorney General's OfficeTOPEKA – Two Salina organizations have been awarded $108,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.The grants were awarded to support the following programs:●Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc.,&nbsp;$32,500 to increase support of child abuse victims through increased advocacy.●Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc.,&nbsp;$9,000, to sustain 24/7 advocacy support and operations of the child advocacy center.●Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc.,&nbsp;$4,000&nbsp;for operating expenditures for children’s advocacy centers.●Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas,&nbsp;$12,500 to provide temporary emergency shelter and trauma-informed support services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, as well as their dependent children, in order to meet their immediate health and safety needs. Educational services will also continue to be provided to reduce the incidence of domestic and sexual violence.●Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, $50,000 to support ongoing operating expenses of the domestic violence/sexual assault center.“Organizations across Kansas do great work every day to support victims of crime,” Schmidt said. “We are proud to support these organizations through the victim services grant programs.”The awards were made from the Protection from Abuse Fund, the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund, the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund for Child Abuse and Neglect, and the Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund. The Protection from Abuse Fund is funded by State General Fund appropriations, marriage license fees, county court costs and municipal court assessments. The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts. The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund for Child Abuse and Neglect Fund is funded through county court costs, municipal court assessments and State General Fund appropriations. The Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts.This year, the attorney general’s office awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to local and state crime victim assistance organizations. Multiple mailboxes and road signs west of Salina took a beating Tuesday afternoon.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that eight mailboxes and five road signs, including culvert alert and no passing zone signs, were struck between noon and 4:40 p.m. Tuesday between the 4200 block of State Street to the 7100 block of State Street.

Deputies talked to many of the mailbox owners and no one had seen or heard anything between noon and 4:40 p.m. Soldan said deputies were able to develop a time frame of when the damage occurred because some people had collected their mail for the day prior to noon and had not seen damage at that time.

Soldan said it appeared that a baseball bat or something similar was used to damage the mailboxes and signs.

Mailbox damage was estimated at $20 each. Sign damage was estimated at $50 each.

Osage orange trees are still common throughout much of the United States, though not many people appreciate just how much the thorny, dense trees have shaped our country. Before Christopher Columbus’ arrival, Osage orange had a limited range in the Red River basin in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Like the droves of Europeans who followed, the tree eventually spread to all corners of our country, so long as you don’t count Alaska and Hawaii. The thorny, dense trees go by a number of names, including hedge trees, prairie hedge, hedge apple, horse apple, bowwood or yellow wood for the hue of the heartwood. Whatever moniker you choose, the trees were the original barbed wire. After sprouting, the hedge trees were aggressively pruned to promote thick growth that was woven into a living fence considered to be “horse high, bull strong and hog tight”. Even after the widespread adoption of barbed wire, wood from the hedge tree is still highly prized for fence posts based on its ability to withstand the elements. Termites and other insects don’t bother the wood. Water doesn’t penetrate the dense grain either. Today, a post made from Osage orange is likely to outlast the strands of barbed wire attached to it. In fact, the posts can be difficult if not impossible to work with if they’re left to season too long after cutting. Hedge posts don’t decay, rather they almost petrify into something between wood and stone. Osage orange’s qualities extend well beyond corralling cattle and other livestock. Its tight grain makes the wood extraordinarily flexible, enough so that a bow made from the tree was worth a horse and blanket in the 1800s. Osage orange also offers the highest heat value of any species when burned as firewood. Osage orange is probably the most popular and widely distributed plant that isn’t a food source for either humans or animals. Its fruit is a softball-sized green ball with folded contours that surround a cluster of seeds. We called them brain blobs growing up because the outer shell consisted of folded contours. They were dense and would make a satisfying sound when flung into a tree trunk. They’ll start falling off trees any day this time of year. Rumor has it the fruits keep all sorts of creepy-crawlies away, from boxelder bugs and crickets to spiders and other pests, especially when placed in basements or near the foundation of a home. Research has yet to find any evidence to support those claims, yet the legends endure. Steel T-posts and pipe braces are gaining favor, but some still prefer to use hedge posts for fencing. Composite compound bows can launch an arrow with a much greater force than the traditional longbow, yet Osage orange bow staves are still readily available. The living fencerows are long gone, but hedge trees planted during the Great Depression as windbreaks still mark the edges of fields. There’s no one quality that has seeded the Osage orange across the countryside, rather versality is its main attribute. From hedge to post or bow to kindling, mankind has found it useful for centuries. While modern materials will eventually win out, they won’t ever have a history quite like hedge.

INSIGHT: History of hedge

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly was in Salina Tuesday to speak to those attending the Kansas Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) annual fall conference.

Kelly told those assembled that since she took office in January 2019, her administration has worked with private sector businesses to create and retain more than 50,000 jobs. 

"That's a milestone worth celebrating. Fifty thousand jobs represent 50,000 opportunities for Kansans across state to achieve their dreams and provide greater futures for themselves and their families," she said. "This is on top of a 2.5 percent unemployment rate, one of the lowest in state history."

Kelly said that the jobs and unemployment rate, combined with record-setting levels of new private sector investment "underscore the strength of the Kansas economy now and into the future."

The governor praised the Kansas Department of Commerce, led by Lieutenant Governor David Toland, closing more than 750 economic development projects representing more than $14 billion in capital investment.

"Credit also goes to KEDA and other forward-thinking leaders here in Kansas who have made it their shared goal to strengthen the economic future of our state," Kelly said. 

"I can't thank you all enough for your partnership and your commitment to our state's success," she added.

Kelly also noted that Kansas also has become "a highly sought after destination for companies looking for a new location to grow their businesses."

"For the past two years, Kansas has won the prestigious Gold Shovel Award for excellence in attracting high-value investment projects that created a significant number of new jobs in our communities," Kelly said. "And, Kansas won the Governor's Cup for being the state with the most economic development investment per capita in the country. Kansas is No. 1 right now!"

Kelly talked about the largest private-sector investment in state history: Panasonic's $4 billion new electric vehicle battery facility in DeSoto, which was announced in July. The facility will employ 4,000 workers and create another 4,000 permanent jobs at suppliers and community businesses, she said. Additionally, 16,500 people will be hired for the construction phase.

"It's a resounding validation that we're on the right track and our future is as bright as it has ever been. Kansas is truly officially open for business," Kelly said.

The "thriving business climate" is due to the state following it's Framework for Growth Plan that was launched in 2021.

"It addressed current and future trends in our state and created a roadmap for developing several key Kansas industries, including aviation, agriculture, biotechnology, and animal health," she said.

Kelly said that none of the state's economic success has been possible without "the right people in place, sufficient housing, childcare, and quality education."

"We're working hard to recruit and retain the skilled workforce Kansas needs to compete at a global level. The main ways we're doing this are childcare expansion and affordable housing," she said. 

"This year, I signed a bipartisan bill expanding tax credits for businesses that provide childcare to employees, and I announced that my administration is giving a total of $53 million to eligible childcare staff at licensed facilities as a reward for their incredibly essential and hard work," Kelly said. 

"To reduce the price of housing, I worked to secure over $90 million in funding for housing throughout the state, and $100 million in incentives for communities to invest in diversifying and rehabilitating housing stock," she added.

Kelly noted that "without a strong education system in place, none of this is sustainable. That's why I am especially proud that we have achieved all of this while fully funding our schools."

The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales are coming to Salina Wednesday thanks to Pestinger Distributing!

Pestinger Distributing of Salina and Colby recently won the Anheuser-Busch Esteemed Ambassadors of Excellence Big Jake Award. Mike Riemann, Pestinger Distributing's general manager, told Salina Post that "in order to achieve Ambassador status and earn the Big Jake Award, which is the highest company honor, a wholesaler must score gold proficiency three times in a five-year period. The Ambassador of Excellence award is given annually to distributors nationwide who perform at the highest level of sales execution, customer service, community involvement, environmental consciousness and the endorsement and engagement of responsible drinking programs."

Riemann said that currently, there are only 13 active Ambassadors in the nation out of more than 500 wholesalers.

One of the perks of winning the award is a local visit from the Budweiser Clydesdales.

Riemann said that the Clydesdale team will be hitching up at Chuck's Bar, 600 N. Santa Fe Avenue, at 5 p.m. Wednesday. They are scheduled to start their trek south on Santa Fe Avenue at 6 p.m., stopping along the way to deliver beer and photo opportunities at some of Pestinger Distribution's Santa Fe Avenue customers. The Clydesdale team is scheduled to conclude it's trip at The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Rieman said.

●The Clydesdale breed is about 200 years old, having originated along the banks of the River Clyde, in Scotland, in the early 19th century.

●The Budweiser Clydesdales and their red, white, and gold beer wagon, were first introduced to the public on April 7, 1933, as part of a surprise presentation brewers August Anheuser Busch, Jr. and brother Adolphus Busch made to their father to celebrate the end of Prohibition.

●All Budweiser Clydesdales are geldings and at least 4 years old.

●Size requirements: must be at least 18 hands (6 feet) high and weight between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds

●On average, each Budweiser Clydesdale consumes as much as 20 to 25 quarts of whole grains, minerals, and vitamins, 50 to 60 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

●The harness and collar that each Budweiser Clydesdale wears weighs about 130 pounds.

●The combined weight of the horses, gear, drivers, and fully-loaded wagon is about 12 tons.

Budweiser Clydesdales to parade down Santa Fe Wednesday evening

There’s an unfortunate trend continuing&nbsp;in&nbsp;Kansas and across the nation that must be stopped: the bad behavior of coaches, parents and fans at high school athletic events.

We’ve all seen it: the yelling, harassing, berating, disrespecting and even physically assaulting high school referees, umpires and other officials during and after games. And oftentimes, the harassment continues on social media. Perhaps you’ve witnessed it firsthand or even been one of those offenders yourself.

Not only is this behavior unacceptable and embarrassing, but it’s also having serious consequences on the future of high school sports.

That’s because another unfortunate trend is sweeping the nation: a&nbsp;critical shortage of high school officials in every state. The No. 1 reason? You guessed it: Coaches, parents and fans mistreating officials.

National surveys of officials report alarming statistics:

• 55% of officials say verbal abuse from coaches, parents and fans is the No. 1 reason they quit.

• 57% think sportsmanship is getting worse.

• 84% feel officials are treated unfairly by spectators.

• 46% have felt unsafe or feared for their safety due to spectator, coach, administrator or player behavior.

Officials are quitting faster than new ones are signing up. It’s a major area of concern for states like Kansas just to cover games. We’re already seeing middle school and JV games being cancelled and, in some cases, varsity games have to be rescheduled or not played. All because there aren’t enough officials.

Unfortunately, bad behavior&nbsp;at high school athletic events&nbsp;has become normalized. It is almost expected that coaches, parents and fans will disrespect the individuals serving as officials.

This culture of bad behavior and the negative perception of officials must change now. Everyone involved in high school sports—parents, coaches, administrators, fans, the media—must turn their focus to the student-athletes playing the games and away from the individuals officiating the contests.

The bottom line: With no high school officials, there can be no high school sports.

That’s why the KSHSAA is partnering with the NFHS and other state high school associations across the country to launch the nationwide&nbsp;#BenchBadBehavior&nbsp;campaign. We’ll use the power of social media along with other tools to help educate everyone about the importance of good behavior at high school athletic events.

NEW CAMBRIA - Peace Lutheran Church's fourth annual car show is coming up this Saturday.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the church, on Main Street in New Cambria.

"Cars of all years and styles will be at this Little Stone Church. You will get a chance to vote on your favorite. There will also be a silent auction and several different home base vendors. We will have a special performance from Taylor’s Twirlers at 12:30 and 1:30," the church noted.

UPDATE 4:11 p.m. Tuesday: The Salina Police Department this afternoon announced that an arrest has been made in connection to a threatening statement written on a women's bathroom wall at Salina South High School.

Following is the statement issued this afternoon by the Salina Police Department.

On September 26, 2022, a School Resource Officer was made aware of a threatening statement written on one of the women’s bathroom walls at Salina South High School. The statement indicated that a school shooting would take place on September 27, 2022, at 8:30 am.

USD 305 Staff notified parents of the threat via email correspondence. Please know that the Salina Police Department worked hand in hand with USD305 school officials to investigate this incident and ensure that local schools were safe. On September 27th, the police department had an increased law enforcement presence at Salina South High School.

On September 27, 2022, a citizen contacted the Police Department with information that led to the arrest of a 14-year-old female student of Salina South High School. The 14-year-old will be booked into juvenile detention, and the Salina Police Department is requesting charges of Criminal Threat and misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property.

The Salina Police Department takes these threats seriously and will work to identify suspect(s) and make an arrest when probable cause exists. The Salina Police Department would like to remind the public that citizen tips are often instrumental in helping clear criminal cases.

Salina South students and staff will have an increased police presence Tuesday morning after a reported threats via graffiti.

In a text to parents and guardians Monday, Salina South Principal Charles Kipp wrote:

Increased conversations about school safety are occurring nationwide. Our goal is to partner with you to ensure our schools are safe.

Today there was a report of graffiti in a girl's restroom stall that included the statements, "School shooting tmrw 8:30 a.m." and "Get ready! Bring yo guns to school and let the fun begin!"

We have been working with the Salina Police Department on this matter. Unfortunately, in this instance we have been unable to identify the individual(s) who were responsible for the statements.

As always, our goal is to ensure the safety of students and staff. There will be increased police presence tomorrow morning at our school, and our staff will be monitoring the hallways and the school.

If your student shares any information with you about this threat, please let me know. Many times students have access to information that we do not.

It is a good time to remind your student to notify an adult if they hear or read information that could indicate a school safety issye. Open communication is the best way for us to maintain a safe learning environment.

Police are looking for a missing flatbed pickup and the person who stole it from a north Salina business Saturday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 1995 red and white Dodge Ram 3500 flatbed pickup with a Kansas license plate of 398BRC was stolen Saturday morning from Gleason and Sons, 2440 N. Ninth Street. The business' name is on the doors.

The pickup had been in the parking lot of the business and was left unlocked with the keys inside, Forrester said.

Surveillance video shows that at approximately 7 a.m. Saturday, a subject who possibly was a white male, walked out of a tree line south of the business. A bit later, the person was seen leaving the property in the Ram and heading north on N. Ninth Street.

Flatbed pickup stolen from north Salina business Saturday

A Salina man was arrested after an aggravated burglary incident in southeast Salina early Monday evening.

When a 62-year-old Salina woman returned to her home on Red Fox Lane at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, she heard a door at the back of the house slam shut, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

In her bedroom, she found items strewn about.

Forrester said the woman then went around to the front of the house and saw a skinny, balding white male who appeared to be in his late 20s or 30s. He was wearing a blue sweat suit. Other witnesses said he was wearing Adidas sweats with a white stripe down the side.When the woman asked him what he was doing there, he told her he lived in the residence.It appeared that approximately $20 worth of food had been eaten. Also, the woman's SIG Sauer 232 .380 caliber hand gun was missing. Additionally, a cellphone that did not belong to the woman was found in the residence.A bit after the woman's encounter with the alleged burglar, an officer located a person matching his description near the intersection of Manchester Road and E.
