For just a few weeks, the Smoky Hill Museum will be showcasing its new traveling exhibit,&nbsp;Notorious, in the museum’s lobby.

This revamped exhibit is based on the museum’s 2018 exhibit of the same name. The exhibit is only on display in Salina through the month of February. It will then travel around the state to various venues. Check the museum’s <a href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/exhibits/traveling-exhibit/notorious-schedule.html">website</a>&nbsp;to see a list of venues.

This exhibit focuses on a select bunch of colorful Kansas characters that have helped shaped the state we call home. Amongst those people, one can find a wide variety of individuals whose actions range from noble to downright despicable.

In many ways, the adjective notorious can be just as grey as the people it describes. In some instances, it’s used to pronounce someone in a negative manner, while other times it has been used to define anyone who is widely known. In this exhibit, the visitor is left to decide. Visitors will learn about people like John Brown, Dr. Brinkley, Bonnie and Clyde, Buffalo Bill&nbsp; and the Bloody Benders, to name a few. Certain individuals are undoubtedly negative and the meaning of notorious is clear cut, while others leave you with a lasting debate.<a></a>

Visitors will discover legend versus reality, how societal views shift with the passage of time and just how these notorious Kansans forever left their mark on the state. If that’s not enough, visitors can always count on a number of hands-on elements to get more into the story.

The museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue in downtown Salina, is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Find notorious Kansans in the Smoky Hill Museum this February

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations after a traffic stop on Interstate 70.

Just after 10a.m. Tuesday, a Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop with a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup for a traffic infraction on Interstate 70, according to Undersheriff Jeff Vaughan.

The deputy made contact with the driver of the vehicle identified as Darren James Denter, 49, out of Old Monroe, Missouri.

The deputy detected the strong odor of marijuana during the traffic stop which led to a search of the vehicle. The search revealed 182 pounds of marijuana, 49 pounds of THC wax, 1000 Psilocybin Mushroom candy bars, 11 pounds of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 550 pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes packaged for sale, and 128 pre-packaged four gram marijuana packages. The estimated street value is over $500,000.

The sheriff booked Denter into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute certain hallucinogenic and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Sheriff’s Office encouraged parents to talk to their children about accepting and consuming anything they don’t know the origin of as items such as chocolate bars and candy can be laced with illegal and harmful substances.

More than $500K worth of pot, mushroom candy seized on I-70

Police are investigating an incident in which a west Salina building was damaged earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime on Monday or Tuesday, a front window of a building in the 600 block of W. Cloud Street appeared to have been shot twice by a pellet gun. Not only were there two pellet marks, but the shots also caused the 4.5-foot by 6.75-foot window to crack.

The replacement cost of the window was estimated at $2,500.

The building is owned by a 43-year-old Lincoln woman.

🎥McPherson County Sheriff, deputy add 'dance squad' to resumes

At least that’s the prediction based on a rodent in Pennsylvania.&nbsp; My 7-year-old daughter has recently taken to studying calendars. She can tell you when all of the important and slightly less important days are. She’s also memorized birthdays and does an impressively good job at reminding the rest of us about what a particular day holds. So when she woke up and announced it was Groundhog Day, there was a sense of excitement in the air.&nbsp; While eating breakfast we feverishly switched television channels trying to catch the festivities of the morning live to learn of our future.&nbsp; By the time the kids had to bundle up and head out to their bus stop, my daughter tried to talk me into letting her skip the bus to school so she could watch the revelation unfold in real time. She just had to know what the future would hold. I denied her request to skip the morning bus and told her we’d watch the exciting announcement together on YouTube when she got home that afternoon.&nbsp; By the time I searched for the prognostication that had taken place earlier in the day, I already knew what had been seen and what had been declared but kept that knowledge to myself. As we gathered around my iPad to watch the replay of that morning’s events unfold, you could sense my daughter anxiously awaiting the announcement of her future.&nbsp; We watched as the stage of gathered gentlemen wearing top hats revealed a royal red carpet and scrolls. We cheered with the crowd as they chanted for a groundhog named Phil while a man formally knocked on a tiny, padlocked door at the base of tree stump located on the stage.&nbsp; We waited in anticipation as the groundhog was awakened from his wintery slumber and brought forth from his den to hint at the scroll containing his discovery. The prognostication was revealed when we heard the statement, “I see a shadow upon my stage. No matter how you measure, it’s six more weeks of winter weather.” My daughter refused to accept the prophesy. She argued that she didn’t see his shadow and suggested that the rodent was misguided. In her distraught state, she demanded to watch other videos from that morning that would surely show different angles of the events. She needed better proof. I assured her that taking weather advice from a rodent is not the only way one should plan for the future and challenged her to look around the farm for her own observed signs of spring. And in her brief time of discovery and reflection before dinner she saw three newborn lambs cuddled together in a bed of straw with their mother. She saw how much more space she had to roller skate in the machine shop as we’ve begun to make room for future seed deliveries. And after moving a pile of leaves, she uncovered the tiny tip of a crocus beginning to peek through the soil. Whether we’ll experience more winter weather or not this year, there are definitely hints of another season beginning to appear.&nbsp; And as my daughter learned, we just have to rely less on a soothsaying rodent and keep our own eyes open for other signs of spring.&nbsp;

Eagle seeks news director for Nebraska communities

From Wednesday through Friday, APAC-Kansas, Inc., Shears Division of Salina will continue lane closures to adjust manholes to match the recent resurfacing: the inside lanes of Ohio at the Iron intersection; and all of the left turn lanes at the Ohio and Iron intersection.

Through traffic in all directions is urged to avoid the area altogether or proceed with caution for the safety of the crews performing the work. 

The work is part of last year's $965,000 ultrathin bonded asphalt surfacing project, which was a major part of the City of Salina's $4.7 million street maintenance capital improvement program.

City of Salina: Iron-Ohio manhole adjustments continue

Salina was warmer and wetter than normal in January 2023.

For Salina, January 2023 tied for the 34th warmest January since records began in 1900 and was the warmest January since 2021.

According to Salina Regional Airport weather reporting, the average monthly temperature in January 2023 was 32.9 degrees, 2.1 degrees warmer than average. The warmest daily temperature in January 2023 was 61 degrees on Jan. 16 and the coldest was 7 degrees on Jan. 31.

Twenty-one new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday in a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

The commencement speaker for the ceremony, Clearwater Police Chief Kirk Ives, encouraged the graduates to always leave people better than they found them.&nbsp; “Officers, you need to learn as much as you can, help as much as you can, and do as much as you can.”

Under the authority of Executive Director Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

Local, area officers graduate from KLETC

Salina Family Healthcare Center has a new mobile medical unit and they want you to see it!

The new mobile medical unit will allow the SFHC's outreach team to travel and offer medical services without patients needing to go to the SFHC facility at 651 E. Prescott Road or even leave rural communities, SFHC noted in a news release.

The public is invited to participate in a walk-through tour of the mobile medical unit on Saturday. 

From noon to 3 p.m., the unit will be in the south parking lot of the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street, near the former J.C. Penney location. 

From 4-6 p.m., the mobile medical unit will be at Dillons, 1201 W. Crawford, for Souper Bowl of Hope, in collaboration with the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. The public is encouraged to bring cans of soup for the food bank.

"The outreach department at SFHC is excited to bring even more services to the community via this ADA-accessible mobile unit! We look forward to providing basic medical care, limited acute care, and offering support to people with chronic diseases like diabetes and COPD. Additionally, through our community partnerships, the outreach team can connect people with resources they may not be aware of," said Kelli Bowles, outreach nurse.

People who are not able to attend the Saturday tours are encouraged to follow the Salina Family Healthcare Center's Facebook page for the mobile medical unit's next scheduled community locations and events.

Police are looking for the person who stole an e-bike from a central Salina residence on Friday.

A Salina man reported to police that he was renting a Nakto 26-inch Santa Monica e-bike from Aaron's, 2545 Market Place. He had arrived at his residence in the 300 block of S. Eighth Street about 2:15 p.m. Friday and had secured the e-bike with two chains and a padlock, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Approximately an hour later, the man went outside and discovered that the chains had been cut and the e-bike was gone.

Forrester said the e-bike was valued at $1,100.

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court will conduct a special evening session April 11 in Concordia as part of its ongoing outreach to familiarize Kansans with the court, its work, and the overall role of the Kansas judiciary.

The court will be in session from 6:30 p.m. to about 8 p.m. April 11 at Concordia High School, 436 W 10th Street. It will be the Supreme Court’s first visit to Concordia in the court’s 162-year history.

The public is invited to attend the special session to observe the court as it hears oral arguments in two cases to be announced soon. After the hearing concludes, the justices will greet the public in an informal reception.

"Special sessions give Kansans an up-close look at how the judicial branch works," Chief Justice Marla Luckert said. "Watching an appellate argument helps people understand how courts resolve disputes and the steps that are taken to make sure court proceedings are fair and case resolution is based on a correct application of the law.”

Luckert said people generally understand the trial process because they may have been in a local courtroom as a juror or witness, or they may know someone who has been in court. But fewer people have seen an appellate court in action.&nbsp;

"Bringing arguments to communities throughout Kansas gives everyone the opportunity to learn how the Kansas Supreme Court decides cases," she said. "People who come to watch and meet us afterward tell us they gained a better understanding of the Kansas judicial system and its constitutional responsibility to fairly and impartially resolve disputes."

The Supreme Court has conducted special sessions outside its Topeka courtroom since 2011, when it marked the state's 150th anniversary by convening in the historic Supreme Court courtroom in the Kansas Statehouse. Since then, the court has conducted special sessions in Colby, El Dorado, Emporia, Garden City, Great Bend, Greensburg, Hays, Hiawatha, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Lawrence, Manhattan, Overland Park, Parsons, Pittsburg, Salina, Topeka, Wichita, and Winfield.

With the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, a number of area schools are participating in Chiefs or Super Bowl spirit weeks.

You can listen to the game at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on KINA (910 AM and 107.5 FM) and 99KG (99.9 FM).

According to spirit week postings on Facebook, most schools were having some sort of Patrick Mahomes theme for today that included wearing headbands, mohawks, or hats. For instance, the Abilene PK-5 Schools celebrated Headband Day during which students could wear "a Mahomes headband or rock a mohawk!"  

Bearcubs in USD #327 Ellsworth/Kanopolis/Geneseo took a different tack on Monday with "Dreaming of a KC Chiefs WIN!" during which students could wear pajamas.

At Southeast of Saline Elementary School, students on Monday celebrated Red &amp; Gold Day during which they wore red and gold to support the Chiefs.

Most of the spirit weeks also have a variation of Red Friday.
