WICHITA – AAA predicts 54.6 million people nationwide will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. That’s a 1.5% increase over 2021 and 98% of pre-pandemic volumes. This year is projected to be the third busiest for Thanksgiving travel since AAA started tracking in 2000*. In Kansas, travelers will be out on the roads and in the air as more than 581,000 Kansans plans to travel over the holiday weekend. That’s an increase of 1.2% over last year.

“Families and friends are eager to spend time together this Thanksgiving, one of the busiest for travel in the past two decades,” says Paula Twidale, AAA’s Senior Vice President of Travel. “Plan ahead and pack your patience, whether you’re driving or flying.”  

Most travelers will drive to their destinations, much like last year. Nearly 49 million people are expected to travel by car. While Thanksgiving road trips have slightly risen - up 0.4% from 2021 - car travel remains 2.5% below 2019 levels. Locally in Kansas, more than 525,000 will be traveling by car – the most popular mode, but just a slight increase of 0.2% from a year ago.

Air travel is up nearly 8% over 2021, with 4.5 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations this year. That’s an increase of more than 330,000 travelers and nearly 99% of the 2019 volume. For Kansans, air travel is up also – with more than 29,000 people flying – similar to the national trend, an increase of 7.4%.

“Airport parking spaces fill up fast, so reserve a spot ahead of time and arrive early,” Twidale suggests. “Anticipate long TSA lines. If possible, avoid checking a bag to allow for more flexibility if flights are delayed or you need to reschedule.”&nbsp;

Americans are also ramping up travel by other modes of transportation. More than 1.4 million travelers are going out of town for Thanksgiving by bus, train, or cruise ship. That’s an increase of 23% from 2021 and 96% of the 2019 volume.&nbsp;Much like others across the country, more Kansans will journey these ways, too, with more than 26,000 people – an increase of 27% - traveling by bus, trains or cruises.

“With travel restrictions lifted and more people comfortable taking public transportation again, it’s no surprise buses, trains, and cruises are coming back in a big way,” Twidale adds. “Regardless of the mode of transportation you have chosen, expect crowds during your trip and at your destination. If your schedule is flexible, consider off-peak travel times during the holiday rush.”&nbsp;

Busiest corridors and best/worst times to travel INRIX expects severe congestion in several U.S. metro areas, with some drivers experiencing more than double normal delays. Highways in and around Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles will be the busiest. To avoid the most hectic times, INRIX recommends traveling early in the morning on Wednesday or before 11am on Thanksgiving Day and avoiding travel between 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Thanksgiving is one of the busiest holidays for road trips, and this year will be no different,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst, INRIX. “Although travel times will peak on Wednesday afternoon nationally, travelers should expect much heavier than normal congestion throughout the holiday weekend. Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic.”&nbsp;

Holiday prep for travelers The travel season can be fraught with twists and turn. AAA recommendations for a safe and fun weekend including the following:

●Make sure your AAA membership is up to date. AAA Roadside Service crews will be out in full force to rescue any stranded drivers.

●AAA Emergency Roadside Service crews rescued more than 400,000 drivers across the country last Thanksgiving weekend – more than 1,300 in AAA Kansas territory.

●Download your airline’s app if flying to be sure you are immediately notified of any changes to the schedule.

●Pack your identification and any medical and insurance items in an easily accessible spot whether inside your carry-on bag of pocket. Do not pack in luggage.

AAA: 581,000 Kansans, 54.6M nationwide to travel for Thanksgiving

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher There are two kinds of people in the world: people who hate snow and those of us who love it. If you think I am crazy, consider I grew up in Wisconsin. In my world, snow means picturesque landscapes coated in white, the fun of sledding, tubing, downhill skiing and snowmobile rides, and if you are lucky — a snow day. My farm friends might roll their eyes and say, what about chores. On my family’s dairy farm our cows were safe and warm in the barn, and we didn’t have to break ice or dig them out of the snow. We only had issues if temperatures were extremely low for a long enough time that the barn cleaner froze up. Those were not fun days. Since snow is a much rarer treat in Kansas, helping with livestock and navigating drifts on snowy days doesn’t really bother me. Plus, the snow never seems to last longer than a day or two so it melts before my excitement wears off. You might think it is too early to be wishing for snow but there are chances in the forecast, and I am filled with anticipation. I dream of fluffy floating flakes that fall peacefully as the sound is absorbed and the countryside is blanketed in white. That may be a bit of wishful thinking since Kansas snow often seems like it is right out of the blizzard from the Claymation classic “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The drier, drifting snow that whips across the Kansas plains is exactly where I imagine the Abominable Snowman. Even if it isn’t the picture perfectness of my dreams, snow is needed. This year’s drought conditions have ensured that pretty much all farmers are excited about any precipitation regardless of form. The unexpected break from our busy lives can be a blessing too as we pause our daily routines and postpone plans. Snow days are a special kind of boost to moral because they often include spending time with our loved ones and doing all the little things that we never have time for otherwise. On days when the world shut down, my family often had a blast and made lasting memories. In my younger years, snow days were spent making forts with my brothers. As I grew older, my dad would take us out for a snowmobile ride. Mom was ready with snacks to warm us up while watching movies as a family. Snow days have brought me so much joy because they are almost always spent with family. In the aftermath of the pandemic there has been debate about whether or not remote work and school means the end of snow days. I have been heartened to see that many educators fighting to keep snow days. There is great value in disrupted schedules making time for joy and togetherness. Today when I end up canceling plans because of snow, it usually allows me to spend more time helping on the farm. Checking on livestock and making the rounds on the farm don’t seem like work when you are with your favorite people and have nowhere else to be. Quality time working is just as fulfilling as play. If we are lucky enough and get great snowfalls this winter, remember not to spend too much time worrying about canceled plans or the work that is looming. Instead, I hope you will join me in embracing snow for the beauty, the moisture and the moments of togetherness.

INSIGHT: Dreaming of snow days

Today is Wednesday, Nov. 16, the 320th day of 2022. There are 45 days left in the year.

In 1907, Oklahoma became the 46th state of the union.

In 1933, the United States and the Soviet Union established diplomatic relations.

In 1960, Academy Award-winning actor Clark Gable died in Los Angeles at age 59.

In 1961, House Speaker Samuel T. Rayburn died in Bonham, Texas, having served as speaker since 1940 except for two terms.

In 1982, an agreement was announced in the 57th day of a strike by National Football League players.

In 1989, six Jesuit priests, a housekeeper and her daughter were slain by army troops at the University of Central America Jose Simeon Canas in El Salvador.

(Franken would resign weeks later.) The federal bribery trial of Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey ended with the jury hopelessly deadlocked on all charges. (Federal prosecutors decided not to retry him.) Jose Altuve of the World Champion Houston Astros won the American League Most Valuable Player award; Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins was the winner in the National League.

One year ago: Hospitals in Michigan and Minnesota reported a wave of COVID-19 patients not seen in months as beds were filled with unvaccinated people and health care leaders warned that staff were being worn down by yet another surge. American journalist Danny Fenster, who spent nearly six months in jail in military-ruled Myanmar, arrived back in the United States after former U.S. diplomat Bill Richardson helped negotiate his release. The U.S. Census Bureau announced that Hartville, Missouri, was now the closest town to the center of U.S. population distribution. Michelle Wu was sworn in as Boston's first woman and first person of color elected mayor in the city's long history.

RUSSELL — The Deines Cultural Center welcomes its newest art exhibition with Rebel Mahieu and her show: Master of Ceremonies.

Rebel was born in Beloit in 1972 and grew up on a farm north of Glen Elder. She received an associate of arts degree from Cloud County Community College, studied commercial design at Kansas State University, and received a B.A. in art education with an emphasis in printmaking from Fort Hays State University in 1995.

She then taught art for eight years, coached basketball and helped STUCO students build floats for parades at Ruppenthal Middle School in Russell.

In 2012, Rebel received a MLS degree in sculpture from Fort Hays State University and is now in her 15th year of teaching art at Colby Community College; she absolutely loves working with students to encourage them to experiment with materials and ideas and to promote art/artists in the community.

When Rebel is creating she enjoys using layers of various materials in a mixed medium style. In her layers you will see symbols, color, and texture used to express an idea or moment in time.

Rebel enjoys going to galleries, taking part in and organizing art walks, and traipsing around the country with her boys and family looking for Native American petroglyphs/pictographs and studying the culture.

Rebel Mahieu's exhibition is at the Deines Cultural Center through Jan. 4.

The Deines is located at 820 N. Main St. in Russell. Admission is free. Call 785-483-3742 for information.

Salina Crossroads Marathon gives local economy estimated $446,296 kick

A pickup stolen from a north Salina motel was found later in another part of north Salina, however, multiple items were missing from the pickup.

Heather Alden, 25, of Salina, told police that she had last seen her 1995 Chevrolet 1500 on Nov. 4, when she had it towed to the parking lot of the Airline Motel, 781 N. Broadway Boulevard. She said she believed the pickup was inoperable.

Alden waited until Friday to report the pickup theft, as she believed she and her friends could find it on their own, Forrester said.

An officer remembered a call from Nov. 5 about a pickup matching the description parked on property in the 400 block of Forest Avenue, Forrester said. An officer went back to that location and found the pickup. The ignition had been punched out, Forrester said.

Items missing from the pickup include the following, he said.

●Alden's grandother's pearl ring, valued at $100

Damage to the ignition was estimated at $100, Forrester said.

Pickup stolen from motel parking lot found in north Salina

A Salina man was arrested on multiple requested charges, including criminal threat and battery, after an alleged incident at Schwan's early Monday.

Officers were sent to Schwan's, 3019 Scanlan Avenue, at approximately 4:45 a.m. Monday for a report of a physical altercation between two employees, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

A 35-year-old female manager was summoned to the office for the report of Travious McFate, 25, of Salina, punching another employee. She told police that when she arrived at the office, she overheard McFate tell others in the office that he had a gun in his car, Forrester said. McFate also was yelling at another employee. 

At that point, McFate allegedly punched two people. He also allegedly pushed the female manager into a wall as he left. The manager followed him and McFate allegedly threw the manager to the ground an got on top of her, Forrester said. Another employeed pulled McFate off of the manager and McFate allegedly punch him as well, causing a one-inch laceration.

Forrester said McFate was gone by the time officers arrived, however they located him in his Honda CRV in the 3000 block of Marcella Drive in southwest Salina.

Police obtained a search warrant for the CRV and during the search located a loaded .45 caliber Hi-Point hand gun that had its identification information scratched off.

McFate was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Police are looking for a flatbed pickup that was stolen from a northwest Salina service center over the weekend.

Twenty new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday in a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

Gary Warner, class coordinator for the 301st basic training class, expressed his appreciation for the graduates and acknowledged the many challenges they overcame throughout their training.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commencement speaker, Interim Wichita Police Chief Troy Livingston, shared some advice with the graduates.&nbsp; “Be leaders.&nbsp; By stepping up to serve your communities you are already leaders.”&nbsp; Livingston described good leaders as possessing self-awareness, garnering credibility, and ones who exhibit humility.&nbsp; “You have joined an exceptional profession, and I like to call it the greatest show on earth.”

Under the authority of Executive Director Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

That was the title of a business book that was especially popular a few years ago, as a parable of how to deal with change. Today we’ll learn about a remarkable change that is coming to southwest Kansas, and it is literally about cheese. A new state-of-the-art cheese and whey protein processing plant is being constructed in Dodge City.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joann Knight is executive director of the&nbsp;Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation with headquarters in Dodge City. She’s a native of the region and a graduate of Dodge City Community College and the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute.&nbsp;

“Back in 1992, we started talking about recruiting dairies from California where they were being crowded out by population expansion,” Knight said.&nbsp;

Recruiting dairies became a successful strategy for the western Kansas&nbsp;Rural&nbsp;Economic Development Alliance in following decades. As milk production grew in western Kansas, leaders wanted to add value and create more jobs.&nbsp;

In 2021, Hilmar Cheese Company of Hilmar, Calif. announced that the company would build a state-of-the-art milk processing facility in Dodge City.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We’re excited,” Knight said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This will be a $630 million project and create 260 jobs. The average salary is projected to be $63,000.”&nbsp;

The plant will operate 365 days a year and have the capacity to handle 260 tanker trucks of milk per day, the equivalent of the production of 110,000 cows. “They’ll be bringing in milk from across the region,” Knight said.&nbsp;

Hilmar Cheese Company was founded in 1984 by 12 dairy farm families in central California. In 2007, the company opened a production facility in Dalhart, Texas. The company is now one of the world’s largest producers of high quality, American-style cheese and whey products.&nbsp;

“Hilmar is an incredibly environmentally sensitive company,” Knight said. One of the factors that attracted Hilmar to Dodge City is the city’s innovative wastewater treatment system, which has won numerous awards.&nbsp;

“Milk is mostly water,” Knight said. “Once the cheese solids and whey are removed, that water will be recycled and reused. It can be re-irrigated and used in the biogas production system. They’ll actually be injecting water back into the aquifer.”&nbsp;

David Ahlem is president and CEO of Hilmar Cheese Company. “Dodge City gives us many opportunities, including a local and skilled labor force, a supportive and expanding agricultural region, and an excellent transportation network that allows us to easily reach our expanding markets,” he said at the time of the announcement in 2021.&nbsp;

The company specializes in the production of cheddar and American-style cheeses used by private label and national brand companies worldwide. It currently produces such cheeses as cheddar, monterey jack, pepper jack, colby, colby jack and mozzarella.&nbsp;

Whey is processed into whey protein products that are used as ingredients in many foods including nutritional beverages and bars; and lactose, which is marketed internationally as an ingredient in confections and infant formula. Hilmar exports products to 50 countries.&nbsp;

Increased demand for milk will benefit area dairies such as High Plains Ponderosa Dairy near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;southwest Kansas community of Plains, population 1,037 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

“Dairy production is so advanced these days,” Knight said. “They’re using robotic milkers and computer operators. They monitor 600 data points on each cow and can test the milk on the spot with their state of the art system.”&nbsp;

“The economic impact will be compounded substantially by the additional dairies, transportation and services that will be required. This could double the dairy industry in southwest Kansas.”&nbsp;

NOW THAT'S RURAL: Joann Knight, Hilmar Cheese

LINCOLN COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Monday in Lincoln County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Nissan passenger vehicle driven by Ismael&nbsp;Arrelano, 46, Mexico, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of 26th Road.

LINCOLN COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Monday in Lincoln County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Nissan passenger vehicle driven by Ismael&nbsp;Arrelano, 46, Mexico, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of 26th Road.The driver lost control of the Nissan. It slid in front of a 2022 Freightliner semi driven by Michael P.&nbsp;Kriegshauser, 42, Kansas City, Missouri. The semi struck the Nissan.EMS transported Arrelano to Salina Regional Health Center. Kriegshauser was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
