WICHITA - Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 3500 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for fall 2022. 

To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Local, area students earn academic honors at WSU

United States Senator Jerry Moran made a stop at Kansas Wesleyan University while in Salina on Friday.

Moran was on hand for the unveiling of a representation of the plaque that will denote Kansas Wesleyan's Pioneer Hall as being on the National Register of Historic Places. The building, which was finished in 1929, was named to the register in January.

"My previous visits here have been on things about today and the future, and it's appropriate that today we take a look back on the beginnings of Kansas Wesleyan and the historic value of this building and its symbolic value to Salina, to Kansas, to the students and faculty at Kansas Wesleyan," Moran said to those assembled in front of the Pioneer Hall steps.

Moran said he also was in Salina Friday to attend the funeral of Jack Vanier. 

"In addition to being with you today at Kansas Wesleyan, I'm attending the funeral services of Jack Vanier, one of those examples of a pioneer, as this building is named, that made a significant difference in this community and this state, and in this university," Moran said. 

"We need to find those people and we need to honor them and we need to role model them," Moran continued. "This country desperately needs not politicians, but good citizens, and that's what we're honoring today, good citizens of the past who decided to make a bright future for the citizens of the future."

While he was on campus, Moran also received an update about Kansas Wesleyan from President Matt Thompson.

As spring approaches, Saline County officials are on point, promoting disaster preparedness.

In advance of Severe Weather Awareness Week Monday through March 10, Saline County Emergency Management is launching a Disaster Kits Project to help folks get ready for deadly storms and other disasters.

Citizens can complete various tasks to win a disaster kit for their families, said Natasha Cundy, Emergency Management deputy director.

Kits include flashlights, first aid kits, a weather radio, and other necessary gear.

“They’re meant to be a building block for the family to continue adding to, to prepare themselves at home for a disaster,” she said.

Common on the list are tornadoes, wildfires and earthquakes, “anything you need to shelter from, or evacuation from, including power outages,” Cundy said. “This is meant to be an educational program to bring awareness to county citizens and urge them to prepare at home.”

Emergency Management’s website —&nbsp;<a href="https://bit.ly/SCEMKits" target="_blank">https://bit.ly/SCEMKits</a>&nbsp;— will soon be linked to its Facebook social media page, containing more information on the kits program as well as links to educational materials, reviews and games to play online to prepare for disasters.

You can complete a 10-question quiz to win a disaster kit, she said, but you must get all answers correct. Another way to obtain a kit is to complete daily Facebook challenges next Monday through Friday.

“If you complete the challenges and tag us on your post, you win a free kit,” Cundy said.

This event coincides with an additional All-Hazard Disaster Kit project that Saline County Emergency Management has rolled out to assist families that struggle to prepare for disasters due to their financial situation.

“The fact is that some preparedness actions are just too costly for people in poverty to afford. For example, purchasing pre-made disaster kits, purchasing flood insurance, or strengthening a home’s resiliency for those living paycheck to paycheck is costly and impractical,” said Michelle Weis, Saline County Emergency Management director.

“With an average of 52 severe and inclement weather events a year and at least one weather event a week in Saline County, low-income households within our country suffer disproportionately when a disaster occurs,” she said. “These kits are available for low-income families that struggle to prepare for disasters due to their financial situation.”

This kit project was funded by a $28,250 grant from the county, using federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Both projects have kits designed to be&nbsp;practical, allowing families to rotate items in the kit with everyday needs from their homes.

“This process will enable the supplies in the kit to not exceed their shelf life and not cause Saline County residents to break the bank to stay prepared,” Weis said.

Participants can&nbsp;also enter for a chance to set off the outdoor warning sirens in April, Cundy said. Just go to the website and click the button for the drawing to enter.

Emergency management tests sirens on the first Monday of every month, weather permitting.

“If it’s overcast or looks like bad weather, we wait, so people don’t think there’s an actual event happening,” she said.

Saline County’s 19 sirens run for three minutes and then automatically shut off.

The lucky winner will also be able to watch the emergency computer system in operation, showing whether each siren is working properly or requires attention,&nbsp;Cundy said.

“The community is very well prepared for a disaster, but it’s always important to continue your education in what you can do to prepare yourselves at home,” she said. “Make plans with family members and make sure you are aware of what you’re going to do in case of a disaster. With the constant changes in technology, it’s important to keep up to date on how to receive emergency alerts in your community.”

Local media plays an important role as well, said Randy Picking, severe weather anchor for Eagle Radio stations — KSKG, Prime 94.5 FM and KINA AM and 107.5 FM — whether it be alerts on websites or radio stations.

“Residents in central Kansas are very lucky that radio stations care about providing timely information concerning severe weather,” he said. “This could be a very active storm season. With what happened this past weekend in southwest Kansas and Oklahoma, we’re getting an early start.”

It’s crucial that people know what to do before severe weather threatens, said Todd Pittenger, news director for Meridian Media, which includes KSAL AM 1150 and FM 106.7; Y93.7 FM; 104.9 FM, of Salina, and AM 1560 KABI in Abilene.

“It’s important to have a weather radio as well. When that radio goes off, it’s your clue to then tune to local radio,” he said.

The media’s job is to supply details so folks can make an informed decision, Picking said, such as when it’s time to take shelter.

He encouraged attending a free Storm Spotter Class at 6:30 p.m. March 22 in Fitzpatrick Auditorium on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University.&nbsp;

Jobs for America’s Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) focuses on jobs and careers in health care during the month of February. Recently, about 20 JAG-K students and staff from three different high schools spent an afternoon learning about career options at Stormont Vail Hospital as part of the recent Senior Days event in Topeka.

Students from Eudora, Goodland and Minneapolis visited Stormont Vail Health’s Topeka hospital facility. Stormont Vail also has facilities in Emporia, Junction City, and Manhattan. In all, Stormont Vail Health has more than 5,000 employees across 13 Kansas counties.

“We want to get in front of students to let them know that these options are out there,” said Terri Dean, senior talent acquisition partner. “We have an aging population, and we’re going to have a growing need for health care in our state. It’s very important for us to develop the next generation of employees for all the jobs needed in health care.”

Dean demonstrated various training tools used by healthcare professionals, including giving students a chance to interact with lifelike manikins. Several students simulated performing CPR on the manikins. Students toured sections of the Topeka facility, learning about not just treatment programs but also support services such as facilities, laundry and food service.

“There are just so many jobs that might interest them,” Dean said. “So many times, when people hear the words ‘health care,’ they know nursing and they know doctors. But a hospital like ours is a complete city. There are positions that don’t require four-year degrees. Some of them require associate degrees. Some of them require training or certifications.”

Kylee Denison, senior at Minneapolis and one of the students on the tour, works in food service at a small hospital in central Kansas. She said the visit to Stormont Vail may spark interest in healthcare careers in JAG-K students.

“I come from a super small hospital, so coming to a hospital of this size, it’s kind of crazy to see all the floors and all the staff that it takes to make it work,” Denison said. “Coming here, I really learned a lot. This opens my eyes because there’s a lot more out there than you can imagine as a high school student.”

JAG-K provides opportunities for students to explore careers through employer engagement relationships. Those experiences may include field trips, job shadows, internships and summer or part-time employment.&nbsp;

JAG-K is a multi-year, in-school program for students in grades 6-12 that offers tools to successfully transition students into post-secondary school, the military, or directly into the workforce with marketable skills. Participants in the program face multiple barriers to success that their JAG-K Career Specialist helps them overcome through a nationally-accredited, evidence-based model.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Essential oils and supplements to prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19? If it smells fishy to you, the FTC agrees. According to the FTC, three high-level distributors for Utah-based multi-level marketing company doTERRA International, LLC, broke the law because they didn’t have scientific proof to back up their health benefit claims.

The complaints filed by the Department of Justice on the FTC’s behalf say each defendant — a pediatrician, a nurse practitioner, and a former registered nurse — claimed during a series of webinars that doTERRA’s products could prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19. The FTC says they touted their medical expertise in promoting doTERRA’s products.

To settle the lawsuits, each defendant has agreed to pay a $15,000 penalty. The three defendants also agreed to stop making claims that aren’t approved by the FDA about preventing/treating/curing COVID-19. And the defendants will have to have scientific proof for any health claim they make.

When it comes to spotting unsupported claims about the prevention, treatment, or cure of COVID-19:

NWS: Warmer this weekend; temps expected to drop next week

Fun fact: in high school, I was a majorette. This might be where I learned one of the most important skills a college president needs-the the ability to juggle. Majorettes twirl batons, and sometimes those batons are on fire. They can also spin knives, flags, and rifles. While I see many metaphorical connections here, the story I want to share is that of Yaritza Vega Herrera, an amazing person, outstanding student, and our very own talented Tiger twirler.

Yaritza grew up in Salina, Kansas, and first picked up a baton at the age of five. She loves the challenge of twirling multiple batons at once, ranging from twirling one to four batons at a time.

Competitions involve both individual and team events ranging from novice to advanced levels.

Individual events mainly include modeling (showcasing one’s appearance via dress, makeup, and hair), solos (individuals demonstrate impressive tricks, difficulty, and personality), and strut (individuals showcase bodywork, marching, and technique).

At Fort Hays State, Yaritza is currently our only majorette, so she had to quickly master the transition from high school to college twirling while flying solo. Today, she creates all of her routines and performances. In college, everything is bigger. The marching and pep bands you perform with are bigger, the crowds are larger and louder, and there are more young eyes looking up to you and wanting to be like you. No pressure.

“In the sport of baton twirling, there are also some tough spots that I had to face head-on and overcome,”&nbsp;Yaritz&nbsp;said. “Some of these include frustration, lack of confidence, and injuries. I would say twirling is a mix of gymnastics and dance with sticks of metal added in to create new tricks, crazy catches, and exciting combinations.&nbsp;

“As thrilling as it sounds, I had to overcome many mental blocks and injuries to get to where I am today. The physical and mental demand that twirling requires is just a small part of the sport itself; the many successes and opportunities it offers far outweigh the negative.”

Two coaches were pivotal in helping Yaritza realize her dream of becoming a collegiate twirler. Her Hays coach, Shelby Higdon, the color guard coach for the Tiger Marching Band, and Shannon&nbsp;Meis, owner of Shannon’s Stars Twirling Club in Salina.

Yaritza said she owes many of her twirling successes to these two amazing coaches who have guided her in the sport of twirling and life as well.&nbsp;

“Even though I create my performances and routines on my own, the process and inspiration that goes on behind the scenes would be much more difficult without these two ladies. I wouldn’t trade them for the world, Yaritza said.

Yaritza loves to perform at both FHSU football and basketball games.&nbsp;

“One of my biggest college highlights was receiving a standing ovation from the audience at the basketball game against Northeastern State,” she said. “I was in tears walking off the court after my performance at halftime simply because I was overwhelmed by the support and love from the Hays community.”

Another college highlight Yaritza shared was hearing her name announced at a home football game as a selectee to compete in the World Championships in England in the summer of 2023.&nbsp;

Yaritza’s college journey has been just as exciting as her twirling journey. As a youngster, she dreamed of going to college but did not necessarily have the resources to pursue that dream. So she dedicated most of her senior year to applying for as many scholarships as possible to take the financial burden off of her parents.&nbsp;

Then, she learned about the Rudd Foundation’s full-ride scholarship to Fort Hays State University. Yaritza applied and was thrilled when the Rudd Foundation staff surprised her at her high school with a giant check – a check that would cover everything from tuition, fees, room and board, and books for four years of college.&nbsp;

“The Rudd Scholarship has been nothing but an absolute blessing, and the support system that it comes along with is truly one of a kind,” said Yaritza. She is a sophomore majoring in nursing and is very eager to begin her nursing classes next fall. In fact, it was our excellent nursing program that attracted Yaritza to Fort Hays State University over other Kansas universities.&nbsp;

She is currently a certified nursing assistant for our Health and Wellness Center located in the Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success. Her passion for serving in the medical field continues to grow, thanks to the amazing FHSU nurses and staff.

“I’ve learned so many life lessons throughout my fourteen years of twirling,” Yaritza said. “I’ve learned that with hard work, dedication, and perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. I have also learned that the little kids who watch me perform and come up to me after games view me as a leader.&nbsp;

“I perform my heart out every time I step foot on the football field or basketball court for those kids who might need a little push to fully chase their dreams and passions. I think being a role model for those who look up to you and overcoming obstacles big and small are what makes you a real champion.”

Yaritza’s talent and resilience are reflective of the DNA of this university. Whether in the classroom, mastering the complex knowledge of her chosen profession, or in the limelight, perfecting her twirling skills, Yaritza is always growing and learning. I am so proud of Yaritza and hope you will join me in cheering her on at the World Championships in August.

Majorettes twirl batons, and sometimes those batons are on fire. They can also spin knives, flags, and rifles. While I see many metaphorical connections here, the story I want to share is that of Yaritza Vega Herrera, an amazing person, outstanding student, and our very own talented Tiger twirler.Yaritza grew up in Salina, Kansas, and first picked up a baton at the age of five. She loves the challenge of twirling multiple batons at once, ranging from twirling one to four batons at a time.Competitions involve both individual and team events ranging from novice to advanced levels.Individual events mainly include modeling (showcasing one’s appearance via dress, makeup, and hair), solos (individuals demonstrate impressive tricks, difficulty, and personality), and strut (individuals showcase bodywork, marching, and technique).At Fort Hays State, Yaritza is currently our only majorette, so she had to quickly master the transition from high school to college twirling while flying solo. Today, she creates all of her routines and performances. In college, everything is bigger. The marching and pep bands you perform with are bigger, the crowds are larger and louder, and there are more young eyes looking up to you and wanting to be like you. No pressure.“In the sport of baton twirling, there are also some tough spots that I had to face head-on and overcome,”&nbsp;Yaritz&nbsp;said. “Some of these include frustration, lack of confidence, and injuries. I would say twirling is a mix of gymnastics and dance with sticks of metal added in to create new tricks, crazy catches, and exciting combinations.&nbsp;“As thrilling as it sounds, I had to overcome many mental blocks and injuries to get to where I am today. The physical and mental demand that twirling requires is just a small part of the sport itself; the many successes and opportunities it offers far outweigh the negative.”Two coaches were pivotal in helping Yaritza realize her dream of becoming a collegiate twirler. Her Hays coach, Shelby Higdon, the color guard coach for the Tiger Marching Band, and Shannon&nbsp;Meis, owner of Shannon’s Stars Twirling Club in Salina.Yaritza said she owes many of her twirling successes to these two amazing coaches who have guided her in the sport of twirling and life as well.&nbsp;“Even though I create my performances and routines on my own, the process and inspiration that goes on behind the scenes would be much more difficult without these two ladies. I wouldn’t trade them for the world, Yaritza said.Yaritza loves to perform at both FHSU football and basketball games.&nbsp;“One of my biggest college highlights was receiving a standing ovation from the audience at the basketball game against Northeastern State,” she said. “I was in tears walking off the court after my performance at halftime simply because I was overwhelmed by the support and love from the Hays community.”Another college highlight Yaritza shared was hearing her name announced at a home football game as a selectee to compete in the World Championships in England in the summer of 2023.&nbsp;“My team and I will compete in one event. HEART OF A TIGER: Meet a talented Tiger twirler

When the From the Land of Kansas program celebrates its 45th anniversary next week in Topeka, it will count among its members a Salina couple whose business is selling tasty and healthful Akaushi beef.

The From the Land of Kansas program began in 1978 as a state agriculture program designed to promote and celebrate agriculture experiences and products grown, raised or produced in Kansas, according to information from the Kansas Department of Agriculture. 

Today, the program has grown to include farmers' markets and businesses that "span the breadth of the agriculture industry, from restaurants, agriculture equipment manufacturers, retailers, farmers and ranchers, to food processors, agritourism, wineries, breweries and distilleries," the agriculture department noted. 

Its 375 members are spread across the state and include Ad Astra Akaushi, a beef business in Salina with roots in south-central Kansas.

Salinan Blake Bergkamp, who with his wife, Hannah, and his parents, Tim and Mary Jo, operate Ad Astra Akaushi, which began business in 2022. Blake explained that the cattle are raised on his parents' ranch near Pretty Prairie, which is south of Hutchinson.

"We're a retail beef business that was started by my wife, Hannah, and I as part of a way to stay connected to my family farm operation, a cow-calf operation operated by my parents," Blake said. 

Blake and Hannah buy the Akaushi calves from his parents. The calves are raised from birth to finish on his parents' farm. Blake and Hannah are then responsible for selling the beef. 

"We're working with a couple of retail businesses, as well as selling beef shares to families and individuals," he said.

Akaushi is one of four original Japanese Wagyu breeds, according to information on the <a href="https://www.adastraakaushi.com/">Ad Astra Akaushi website</a>. It was first introduced in the United States in 1994.

Blake said the Akaushi beef offers several health benefits over traditional domestic breeds. It also offers typically a higher grade of beef than most people would find in a store.

"We thought we had a good, value-added product that differentiated from what most consumers are able to find in a typical storefront," Blake said. "We saw that as an important piece to set ourselves apart from other businesses out there."

Because of the way it develops, the Wagyu breed typically requires more time from birth to finish.

"The Wagyu breed typically grows a bit slower. To maximize the marbling potential of their genetics, they need to grow a bit longer than typical beef breeds, and so there is a higher input cost to feeding them for a longer period of time and raising them to an older age," Blake said.

Akaushi finish about twice as long on grain as do typical domestic breeds. That helps improve the marbling, Blake said.

Hannah noted that the cost of raising Akaushi cattle also includes a DNA verification process to assure consumers that the beef they are getting is really Akaushi.

"It's not a huge expense, but you do the DNA verification process with the Akaushi," she said.

Akaushi cattle receive eartags and small tissue samples from the cattle are sent to a lab so that Ad Astra Akaushi can verify to consumers that the beef they are eating is Akaushi, Hannah explained.

Blake said Wagyu cattle have a higher ratio of monounsaturated fat to saturated fat. Monounsaturated fat has been proven to benefit heart health and lead to lower cholestrol.

"That's the healthy fat and more typical to what you would find in a canola oil," he said. 

Blake said customers notice a difference from regular beef when eating the Akaushi beef.

"That's the most common feedback that we get from customers is that they notice right away more of a tender beef product and more of a buttery flavor," Blake said.

Both the Akaushi steaks and roasts earn high praise from Ad Astra Akaushi's customers, he added.

Blake said that up to a year before the first cattle were finished and the beef was for sale last year, he and Hannah were busy getting a website built and creating Facebook and Instagram accounts for the business.

Joining Facebook-based groups and other groups, such as From the Land of Kansas also have helped the couple reach consumers, Hannah said.

Additionally, another goal was to sell Akaushi beef to businesses that would then resell the beef to consumers, she said. Ad Astra Akaushi beef can be found in two Kansas retail stores: Kansas Premium Meats in Belvue and The Merc Co-op grocery store in Lawrence. Blake said that Fly Boy Brewery &amp; Eats in Sylvan Grove also has purchased some of the Akaushi beef.

The couple hopes to establish similar relationships with local and area outlets as well.

This year, the company will have USDA-inspected processed beef, which will allow beef to be shipped out of state, Blake said. 

"That was kind of a big reason to join From the Land of Kansas, as well as just to reach a broader audience and be able to take advantage of some of the benefits that they offer their members," Blake said.

Bergkamp: From the Land of Kansas benefits Salina's Ad Astra Akaushi

Two people were injured in a three-vehicle wreck at a busy south Salina intersection Thursday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Pamela Robinson, 61, of Texas, was northbound on S. Ninth Street in a 2018 Nissan Rogue and attempting to turn left onto W. Magnolia Road when she struck a southbound 2018 Subaru Forester driven by Douglas Klimek, 69, of Salina. The impact caused the Forester to strike a southbound 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Dustin Lauffer, 23, of Salina, sending the pickup into a city traffic light pole, Forrester said.

The wreck occurred at approximately 2:35 p.m. Thursday.

Both Robinson and Lauffer suffered minor injuries, but were not transported to the hospital, Forrester said.

All three vehicles sustained front-end damage and were removed from the scene by a wrecker service.

Forrester said Robinson was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way.

The owner reported earlier in the week two snack vending machines had been damaged due to the locking mechanism being drilled out. The vending machines did not contain money, but the damages are estimated to be $4,000.

Later in the week, the owner arrived at the business to find someone had damaged the coin-operated pet wash machines in attempt to steal the coins inside. The suspects were not able to gain entry into the machines, but the damages are estimated to be $7,000.
