The FTC enforces the Eyeglass Rule, which gives you the right to get your eyeglass prescription — whether you ask for it or not — and at no extra charge once your eye exam has been completed. Having a copy of your prescription lets you shop around and get the best deal. But based on public comments and consumer reports we’ve gotten, it’s clear that some eye doctors aren’t following the rule.

To correct that and help the FTC enforce the law,&nbsp;the agency, in its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/12/ftc-proposes-updating-eyeglass-rule-require-prescribers-get-signed-confirmation-when-providing">notice of proposed rulemaking</a>, wants eye doctors to not only get a signed confirmation when they release prescriptions to patients, but also to keep a record of that confirmation for at least three years. Eye doctors should already be requesting you sign a confirmation of prescription release when you receive your&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buying-prescription-glasses-or-contact-lenses-your-rights#buying">contact lens prescription</a>.

The proposed updates also would clarify that your proof of insurance coverage is considered payment for services when determining when a prescription must be shared. It would also let your eye doctor give you a digital copy of your prescription, instead of a paper one, if you agree.

The FTC wants to know what you think about the proposed updates. The notice includes questions for public comment which will help the agency with its decision-making on the proposal. These include questions about provisions in the proposed rule, as well as questions related to the costs and benefits of the proposed rule to consumers and eye doctors. The notice will be published in the Federal Register in early January 2023. Once it’s there, please submit comments electronically or in writing for 60 days for agency consideration.

What proposed FTC updates to the Eyeglass Rule mean for you

ABILENE - Hospice of Dickinson County is sponsoring its annual Remember Me Tree, to honor the memory of loved ones during the holiday season. It is on display in the lobby of Memorial Hospital, 511 NE. 10th&nbsp;Street, in Abilene through the end of December.

Anyone may place an angel or cross on the tree to honor or remember a loved one. Donations are accepted for the ornaments and it is encouraged to put the name of the person honored on the ornament. For donations of $20 or more, porcelain keepsake ornaments are available.&nbsp;Donation boxes are in the Memorial Hospital front lobby, next to the tree, and at a few other businesses in Abilene.

Placing an ornament on the "Remember Me Tree" is a wonderful way to remember or honor a loved one during the holidays. These donations directly benefit local Hospice patients and programs.

The Candlelight Ceremony will be held Dec. 20, at Community Bible Church, 1400 N. Cedar, in Abilene beginning at 6 p.m. Everyone from the community is invited. There will be a short memorial reading followed by honoring those whose names appear on the Remember Me Tree.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus, more often referred to simply as RSV, is a common virus that affects the lungs and breathing passages. RSV may not be severe when it first starts but can progress quickly.

Each year, an estimated 60,000 to 120,000 adults aged 65 and older and 58,000 to 80,000 children younger than five are hospitalized due to an RSV infection.

The current year has been particularly difficult for RSV across the nation and here in the Salina area. The combination of higher than normal cases of influenza and RSV coupled with the ongoing spread of COVID-19 is causing concern that a"tripledemic" is poised to overwhelm a healthcare system that is still not fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tickets can be purchased for for $30 on the day of the tour. Tickets must be presented at each home.

The Holiday Home Tour is not recommended for children under age 12 and keep in mind that some homes on the tour have more than one level or stairs into and out of the residence.

BROOKVILLE - The Brookville Community Foundation Fund hopes to add a festive glow to the western Saline County town Saturday evening.

The first Brookville Community Foundation Parade of Lights is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday. Participants are asked to line up at the school at 5:45 p.m. There is no need to pre-register to participate in the parade, according to information on the Brookville Community Foundation Fund Facebook page.

The parade is scheduled to go past the park.

Other activities are planned in conjunction with the parade, including the following.

The United Methodist Church is scheduled to have a live nativity scene from 5:45-6:30 p.m.

The United Methodist Church also plans to serve hot cocoa, cookies, and chili.

Santa Claus and the Grinch will be available for photos in the park from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The Sandstone Saloon is scheduled to have a Christmas Cheer Apple Cider special, and ugly sweater party, and karaoke.

Asleep at the Wheel has been part of the American roots music landscape for more than 50 years. Although the band got its start on a farm in Paw Paw, W.Va., Asleep at the Wheel became a cornerstone of the Austin, Texas, scene upon its arrival in 1973. Inspired by western swing and honky-tonk country, the band has accrued 10 Grammy awards. Ray Benson carries the band back onto the road, where they’ve remained a staple for five decades.

At a towering 6’7”, the Philadelphia-born Benson is considered a giant in the industry. However, it’s his contributions to music history, not his height, that have made him a dominant figure on the music scene since 1970. Benson is the frontman and founder of the world-renowned Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. I was 19 years old playing honkytonks and getting an education.” His 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox, showcased his deep knowledge of country’s history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and 1960s. His mentors were George Jones, Ray Price, and Glen Campbell, but his most remarkable accomplishment was putting his own spin on their style.

Salina Regional reported six hospitalizations due to COVID-19.

The Salina Educational Automotive Museum of America - aka The Garage - was honored Tuesday for its work to help keep children safe.

Safe Kids Kansas recognized the museum during the organization's annual awards ceremony Tuesday in Topeka. The Garage received an Outstanding Coalition Organization award.

"We are thrilled to have been selected for this award. Our partnership with Safe Kids of Kansas is vital to our long-term success at The Garage," Michelle Peck, executive director of the museum told Salina Post.

"We invested over $1 million dollars in hands-on exhibits, such as a Seatbelt Convincer, which simulates a 5-mile-per-hour collision and instills the importance of wearing a 3-point seatbelt," she continued. "My staff and the high-tech driving simulators have aided in the experience of those enrolled in Royal Driving School, which meets once a month with groups of up to 30 students. Using the Seatbelt Convincer and our driving simulators, students are offered the opportunity to learn how to drive a manual transmission, or how to tow a trailer."

Peck noted that the driving simulators already have more than 900 hours on them.

The Garage, 134 S. Fourth Street, opened to the public on Feb. 11. The facility includes 40,000 square feet of museum space, a training center, a library and lounge, a gift shop, a theater, a Turbo Trivia Tower, educational fueling stations, LEGO and Hot Wheels exhibits, driving simulators, welding and painting simulators, a Seatbelt Convincer ride, a car seat safety program, and curriculum resources.

The Garage joined the Safe Kids Kansas coalition shortly before the museum's public opening.

In presenting the award to The Garage, Safe Kids Kansas noted the following.

The Garage has created a place where automotive history &amp; safety can be celebrated, and a service can be provided to its patrons. In addition to showcasing an impressive collection of cars on exhibit, The Garage also offers a variety of interactive experiences to aid in the mission of teaching automotive safety and interest in the vocational arts. This includes the investment into a Seatbelt Convincer, which simulates a 5 mile per hour collision and instills the importance of wearing a seatbelt, driving simulators, a welding simulator and paint spray simulator. The Garage partners with Royal Driving School to provide the opportunity for participants to utilize these tools in learn skills such as driving a manual transmission vehicle, or how to tow a trailer. They also offer a Turbo Trivia Tower with automotive-themed quizzes, including a selection of questions from the Kansas Learner’s Permit Test, to monitor progress and comprehension through their coursework. They also host a monthly Cars &amp; Coffee event for their members that has been dubbed the “Donut Drink &amp; Drive”, where safety information is provided and is up for discussion. This ranges from proper car seat/booster seat use to impaired driving consequences. The Garage staff and board of directors are dedicated not only to the history of the automobile, but also to teaching the next generation the importance of automobile safety.

"We've created an experience for all ages at The Garage and being recognized for our educational efforts and commitment to safety is an honor," Peck said.

The Garage in Salina garners recognition from Safe Kids Kansas

As part of its new Dental Hygiene program, Salina Area Technical College is opening a clinic on campus in January, with the goals of providing students an opportunity to develop their hands-on skills, and provide low-cost services to the public.

The students will work under the supervision of licensed Dental Hygienists and a Dentist, providing basic services such as teeth cleanings, whitening and sealants, to patients ages four and up. Costs will be substantially lower than usual; an adult cleaning will cost $20 to $40, depending on the status of the patient’s oral health needs.

The clinic will operate during the school year, on Mondays from Noon to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and services are by appointment only. Because the Dental Hygiene students are learning their skills, appointments could take as long as 3-1/2 hours with the possibility of the need to return for additional appointments to provide the highest standard of dental hygiene care.

“Our students are looking forward to seeing patients when they come back from Christmas break,” said Brooke Horner, Director of Allied Dental Education. “And even though we’re just beginning to advertise the clinic, support from the community has been amazing – there are huge numbers of people out there who don’t have access to regular dental care right now.”

Salina Tech opening dental hygiene clinic

A traffic violation led to the arrest of two Salinans on requested drug charges and a requested firearms charge late Thursday morning in north Salina.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that an officer on patrol in the 500 block of E. Pacific Avenue saw a blue motorcycle with a man and a woman on it driving eastbound just before noon. The officer recognized the motorcycle as being associated with someone he knew to have an active Saline County District Court warrant.

The duo headed south on N. Ohio Street, pulling into Casey's, 500 N. Ohio Street, with the officer following to conduct a traffic stop as the license plate on the motorcycle had expired in July of 2021, Forrester said. At that point, other officers had also arrived.

Officers went inside the store and made contact with the driver, identified as Dillon Sonnier, 23, of Salina. Forrester said that when they took Sonnier outside to talk about the expired license plate, he became nervous and asked to go into the restroom. Instead, officers patted him down and found an SCCY 9mm handgun in his coat. They also found a small metal container with pills that were later identified as amphetamine.

Forrester said that because Sonnier was a convicted felon, he was not to be in possession of a firearm.

Sonnier was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Meanwhile, the woman who had been on the motorcycle had gone into the women's restroom and refused to exit, however, a store employee finally got her to leave the restroom, Forrester. The woman, identified as Elektra Iford, 22, of Salina, had an active warrant from Saline County District Court.

Forrester said Iford was arrested on the warrant and on the following requested charges.

On Oct. 1, 2022, between midnight and 3 a.m., unknown suspect(s) entered a storage unit in the 3300 block of S. Ninth Street and stole multiple firearms and tools from the property. One vehicle of interest in this investigation is an unknown-color single-cab pickup.

●Remington model 12, hexagon barrel pump .22, with a dark wood stock, the barrel also had a blister in it from a bad round. Early 1900's

●Pieta Remington black powder pistol, Remington copy, in black case with shooter kit and lead balls.

●(2) Ruger .22 with a dark wood stock, dark wood stocks.

●Baldwin company, single shot black powder 12 gauge, break barrel, says "New Orleans, Louisiana" on the gun, dark brown stock. Rifle had rust patina, from the early 1900's.

●Mossberg bolt .243, dark wood gun, older gun from the 1970s.

●Black hunting scope on the Mossberg .243, unknown brand.

●Night Force scope, brand new in box black in color.

●Sears Roebuck, .22 bolt action rifle, with chrome bolt, trigger, and trigger housing.

●Savage Semi-auto .22, tiger striping, dark wood stock.

●(3) - Semi-auto rifles, .22, unknown brand.

●(2) - .22 bolt action rifles, unknown brand.

●500 rounds of .357 magnum, loose ammo in a bag.

●300 rounds of .38 special, mixed brands.

●WWII K-Bar fighting knife, in dark leather sheath

●1/4" mini-Snap on drive air ratchet, black or orange in color, was in wood crates

●3/8" Snap on drive air ratchet, black or orange in color.

●1/2" Snap on drive impact, black cover with a black and red grip, was in wood crate.
