Community has always been key to the growth and progress of Kansas Wesleyan, dating back to shortly before the university’s founding. Then, 95 acres of land was gifted to support Salina’s efforts to attract the university that would become KWU. The 1920s construction of Pioneer Hall is another example, as a $50,000 campaign by local business leaders allowed the project to continue.

Today is no different, as the university announced Wednesday that recent gifts have propelled it through the second phase of The Power of AND Campaign, the largest capital campaign in the university’s history.

The campaign has now raised more than $28 million in the past 40 months, including more than $12 million in Phase Two.

“Kansas Wesleyan is on a great trajectory,” said Matt Thompson, KWU president. “For more than 136 years, KWU and Salina have had a mutually beneficial relationship. The community supports the university, and we have given back to our communities through education, leadership, community service work and alumni settling in the region. Our recent successes, including our 20% growth in enrollment since 2019, are a testament to the power of this approach. This campaign’s success begins our positioning to give back more often, and in more significant ways. Helped by our alumni, friends and supporters, we are ready to step into the future and embrace the next chapter in KWU’s storied history. We are grateful to all who have empowered us to take these steps.”

The centerpiece of the campaign’s second phase was music, including the renovation of Sams Chapel and creation of a new entrance and lobby for that facility. The university announced in December that it had completed the campaign that would precede the renovation. While a formal groundbreaking date has not been announced, work to move departmental materials and offices is nearly complete.

Phase two also included the announcement of Coyote Village, the university’s new student housing, and the Bieber Dining Hall.&nbsp;The main floor of Memorial Library underwent an extensive renovation, which included new carpet, furniture and signage.

Phase one, which wrapped up this past spring, included construction of the Nursing Education Center and significant scholarship increases. KWU, in fact, has increased the number of its endowed scholarships by roughly 22% since 2019.

The opening phase of the campaign also included endowment monies, support for campus ministry, backing for improvements at baseball and softball facilities, additional faculty and staff positions, and renovations of multiple science labs and other academic areas.

At this time, current fundraising initiatives — those highlighted in phase two — will continue as the university prepares for a third phase of the comprehensive campaign.

KWU completes Phase Two of capital campaign, raises more than $28M

Recent layoffs in industries like the tech sector have scammers fine-tuning their approaches to take advantage. They may advertise jobs online, sometimes setting up fake websites, or look for targets on social media — all to try to steal your money and personal information.

Scammers may go to great lengths to get what they want. Some may conduct fake online job interviews and set up phony onboarding portals where they ask you for Social Security numbers and bank account information to (supposedly) deposit paychecks. Other scammers may ask you to send money for (supposed) equipment needed for remote work — with the promise to reimburse you with your first paycheck. But these are scams.

Whether you’re looking for your first job or seeking a new gig, here’s some advice to help you avoid job scams:

Verify job openings before you apply.&nbsp;Reach out to the company directly using contact information you know to be legit — not an email or phone number you got from the person who contacted you. If you’re not familiar with the company, search its name with the word “scam” or “fraud.” You may find stories from others who have been targeted.

Watch for telltale signs of a possible scam.&nbsp;There’s no sure-fire way to detect a job scam, but there are red flags that should raise your suspicions — for example, email from personal accounts not affiliated with a company, poor spelling and grammar, interviews conducted solely via email or online chat, salaries out of line with industry norms, and requests for account numbers or other personal information. &nbsp;

Don’t pay for the promise of a job.&nbsp;Honest employers will never ask you to pay to get a job. And legitimate placement firms and headhunters typically don’t charge prospective employees. Instead, they’re paid by the company looking for qualified candidates. If you’re asked for money, walk away. You could be dealing with a scam.

Today, the Salina Housing Authority and Knight Development announced the&nbsp;funding&nbsp;of Salina RAD Homes, setting the stage for a significant renovation and development effort to begin on the scattered site portfolio. 

The proposed redevelopment effort is made possible through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Assistance Demonstration Program (RAD), which seeks to increase affordable housing opportunities through private investment.

“We are pleased to take this important step forward with the first phase of our portfolio conversion, aptly named Vanguard,” said Phil Nix, Executive Director of Salina Housing Authority. “We expect to close on phase two in the first half of 2023. Together, these two phases will increase the quality and availability of affordable housing opportunities in Salina.”

Constructed between 1952 through 1997, Salina RAD Homes sits on approximately 20.52 acres. Salina RAD Homes is a 118 scattered site project located at various addresses throughout the city of Salina. A collective of single-family homes, duplexes, fourplexes, and row houses, this development is a RAD/Section 18 blend of 24 RAD units and 94 PBV units. There are ten one-bedroom, 56 two-bedroom, and 52 three-bedroom units.

Each unit will be evaluated for modernization. Amenities and upgrades may include kitchen and bathroom renovations, new windows and flooring, new HVAC Systems and appliances, energy-efficient building features, and interior/exterior paint. In addition, the units will be complemented where appropriate with landscaping, sidewalk improvements, and signage.

Red Stone Equity Partners provided equity. Cedar Rapids Bank &amp; Trust provided debt coverage. Our allocating agency partner is Kansas Development Finance Authority, and the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation issued the bonds. The General Contractor is Snyder Construction Group. Royal American Management will provide Property Management.

Salina Housing Authority to begin $23M renovation of affordable housing

LAWRENCE – A third-year student at the University of Kansas School of Law will receive a grant from the Kansas Farm Bureau Legal Foundation. Lindsay McQuinn is a recipient of the foundation’s Rural Law Practice Grant.

This grant is awarded to law students who intend to practice in rural communities after graduation, bringing legal information and advocacy to those with limited access to resources. A maximum of three students each year can win the $16,500 grant.

“Serving rural communities is important to me because you get to see the impact you’re making on people and seeing that difference,” McQuinn said. “There’s more of an opportunity to get plugged into the community when it’s smaller. I think it’s important to see the different types of cultures and lifestyles and to really see that family and community vibe.”

McQuinn will join Hampton &amp; Royce L.C. in Salina after graduating in May.

“They are already really connected with the community,” McQuinn said. “Working for a firm like that opens up more opportunities to really give back and get more connected with the community.”

McQuinn is no stranger to rural Kansas. Her father grew up in a small community in Missouri, and McQuinn visited her family’s farm as a child.

“At first, I wasn’t sure I could see myself in that small of a town, but when I visited Salina, I just fell in love with the place,” McQuinn said. “It’s smaller than a big city and you get to see people you know every day and develop more of a connection to people.”

“The Kansas Farm Bureau Legal Foundation is making a real impact with its Rural Law Practice Grants. They are meaningful ways to support both new lawyers and rural communities,” said Stacey Blakeman, assistant dean of career services at KU Law.

This grant will give students like McQuinn the opportunity to get more involved and give back financially or timewise more than they would have been able to without this grant.

“I may be able to stay at a smaller firm in a smaller community when I otherwise financially wouldn’t be able to. It’s opening up a lot more doors than it would without it,” McQuinn said.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the 2023 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Funds for the program are awarded to the agency by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service.

The grant funds are in turn granted to projects and organizations to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops by leveraging efforts to market and promote specialty crops; assisting producers with research and development relevant to specialty crops; expanding availability and access to specialty crops; and addressing local, regional, and national challenges confronting specialty crop producers. Specialty crops are defined by the USDA as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture.”

Applications will be evaluated by a team of external reviewers. The team will rate proposals on their ability to successfully promote specialty crops in Kansas and make a positive impact on the Kansas economy. Those recommendations will be submitted to the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture, who will make the final awards.

KDA announces specialty crop grant opportunity

The legendary band Three Dog Night is coming to Salina's Stiefel Theatre.

The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 18 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Salina Souper Bowl of Hope is asking for community help to collect 57,000 cans of soup.

The annual collection distributes the soup to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, Ashby House, and DVACK.

The collection, which will accept cans of soup and cash donations, will go through Feb. 11. Salina Souper Bowl of Hope noted in a news release that a $30 donation will allow the organization to purchase 60 cans of soup due to its volume buying power.

Groups can drop off donations of soup and cash at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, 255 S. Chicago Street, on the following dates.

Groups also can call Janie at 785-643-7143 to make an appointment to drop off money and soup.

Additionally, there will be drop-off locations at Salina Dillon's stores at the following times and dates.

Salina Souper Bowl of Hope seeks donations, volunteers

Two runaway teens from Saint Francis Ministries were arrested on multiple requested charges Tuesday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said that on Sunday, just before midnight, someone tore a hole in a screen on the Mod D building at Saint Francis Ministries, 509 E. Elm Street, and accessed a window to enter the building. While inside, the person or persons stole keys to a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and then stole the minivan, which was valued at $16,000. Damage to the screen was estimated at $20.

Then, on Monday, the owner of the Ambassy Motel, 217 S. Broadway Boulevard, checked room 25, which had a cut window screen. Inside, the owner found two teen boys, who fled once they were discovered, Forrester said.

The motel owner told police that one of the boys was shorter with fluffy gray hair. The other was described as being tall and skinny.

Forrester said that police found items in the room belonging to a 15-year-old boy who had recently run away from Saint Francis Ministries. A 17-year-old boy also was reported to have run away from Saint Francis Ministries at the same time.

On Tuesday, both boys were found in the Grand Caravan in Ottawa County, Forrester said. The minivan was returned to Saint Francis Ministries.

Forrester said both boys face the following requested charges.

By LAURA HAFFNER Ellis County farmer Farmers and ranchers are some of the most resilient people I know. They weather incredible odds, pun intended, from droughts, to floods, fire, hail, blizzards and more. This doesn’t even touch the volatile input costs, family dynamics, inflation and increased regulations we are seeing. Despite these adversities, we pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and continue to provide for our families while often being the first to give the shirts off our own backs for a neighbor in need. But what happens when that proverbial bootstrap snaps? Do we fix it right away and make it whole again, or do we slap a little duct tape and bailing wire on it and call it good? While that solution may work for a short time, the tape will eventually lose its sticky and the wire will start poking one in the calf. That’s when a whole new set of challenges surface. In my own life, agriculture has provided me with some of life’s greatest highs, but it has also contributed to some of my darkest lows. It is curious how something we love so much can cause so much stress, and we often ignore or fail to address the signs.&nbsp; Several years ago, I invited a counselor with an agriculture background to my classroom. He walked students through an exercise where they wrote down all the agriculture-related stressors they could think of. Within a few short minutes, one group had listed more than 40. Upon evaluation, class members determined the only thing in all those items we could control was ourselves. That left more than 40 other major items that we had little to no control over. Talk about the perfect storm for some real stress in our industry! Using the results from the exercise, our guest speaker guided us through an eye-opening experience to help us learn how we view and handle our stress. Those in the room realized they weren’t alone, and there are others who have experienced similar stressors. That may have been just as powerful as any coping skill we could have learned — we are not alone in the battles we face in agriculture.&nbsp; Some battles we face are short and quick. They may annoyingly take our time and make us uncomfortable, but we can quickly adjust to take on another day. Some battles rage on for months and even years. Even the toughest, most resilient warriors can get worn down. In some cases, the burden is so great it feels like the battle may never end or we may be left behind on the field. But it doesn’t have to be that way.&nbsp; Our fellow members within the Farm Bureau family are standing up and recognizing that something needs to change. Farmers and ranchers are passionate about this topic because we’ve lived it or have seen our families and friends struggle with it. We are sounding the alarm, rallying the troops and fighting alongside each other to ensure no one is left on the field alone.&nbsp; Maybe you know something needs to change mentally but taking that first step to attack the topic of mental health is scary. Maybe the first step is opening up to a trusted friend, family member, doctor, pastor or exploring some resources to learn more. Perhaps you’re not experiencing any of your own mental health battles at the moment but would like to learn how to be an ally.&nbsp; While these don’t substitute for the opinion of a health care professional, Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) has been building an arsenal of resources that may serve as good place to start.  </figure>By LAURA HAFFNER Ellis County farmer Farmers and ranchers are some of the most resilient people I know. They weather incredible odds, pun intended, from droughts, to floods, fire, hail, blizzards and more. This doesn’t even touch the volatile input costs, family dynamics, inflation and increased regulations we are seeing. Despite these adversities, we pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and continue to provide for our families while often being the first to give the shirts off our own backs for a neighbor in need. But what happens when that proverbial bootstrap snaps? Do we fix it right away and make it whole again, or do we slap a little duct tape and bailing wire on it and call it good? While that solution may work for a short time, the tape will eventually lose its sticky and the wire will start poking one in the calf. That’s when a whole new set of challenges surface. In my own life, agriculture has provided me with some of life’s greatest highs, but it has also contributed to some of my darkest lows. It is curious how something we love so much can cause so much stress, and we often ignore or fail to address the signs.&nbsp; Several years ago, I invited a counselor with an agriculture background to my classroom. He walked students through an exercise where they wrote down all the agriculture-related stressors they could think of. Within a few short minutes, one group had listed more than 40. Upon evaluation, class members determined the only thing in all those items we could control was ourselves. That left more than 40 other major items that we had little to no control over. Talk about the perfect storm for some real stress in our industry! Using the results from the exercise, our guest speaker guided us through an eye-opening experience to help us learn how we view and handle our stress. Those in the room realized they weren’t alone, and there are others who have experienced similar stressors. That may have been just as powerful as any coping skill we could have learned — we are not alone in the battles we face in agriculture.&nbsp; Some battles we face are short and quick. They may annoyingly take our time and make us uncomfortable, but we can quickly adjust to take on another day. Some battles rage on for months and even years. Even the toughest, most resilient warriors can get worn down. In some cases, the burden is so great it feels like the battle may never end or we may be left behind on the field. But it doesn’t have to be that way.&nbsp; Our fellow members within the Farm Bureau family are standing up and recognizing that something needs to change. Farmers and ranchers are passionate about this topic because we’ve lived it or have seen our families and friends struggle with it. We are sounding the alarm, rallying the troops and fighting alongside each other to ensure no one is left on the field alone.&nbsp; Maybe you know something needs to change mentally but taking that first step to attack the topic of mental health is scary. Maybe the first step is opening up to a trusted friend, family member, doctor, pastor or exploring some resources to learn more. Perhaps you’re not experiencing any of your own mental health battles at the moment but would like to learn how to be an ally.&nbsp; While these don’t substitute for the opinion of a health care professional, Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) has been building an arsenal of resources that may serve as good place to start. The Navy said it had discharged 23 active-duty sailors for refusing the coronavirus vaccine; it marked the first time the Navy had thrown currently-serving sailors out of the military over the mandatory shots. David Ortiz was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first turn on the ballot, while steroid-tainted stars Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were denied entry to Cooperstown in their final year under consideration by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

 HR Healthy Workplace Roundtable to look at child care solutions

UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Wednesday: The American Red Cross attributed the cancellation of the Eagle Radio Blood Drive to a shortage of blood collection bags.

Blood collection organizations nationwide including the American Red Cross are currently facing a shortage of blood collection bags as a result of ongoing vendor supply chain challenges over the past several months.

While the Red Cross has been able to mitigate major supply issues for our hospitals, we may need to adjust our blood donation collections to ensure we appropriately balance the number of blood donations with the number of available blood collection bags. These mitigations allow the Red Cross to conserve kits while meeting patient needs.

Due to the supplier shortage in collection bags, the Red Cross may ask donors to try another type of donation such as Power Red or may need to limit donations in certain circumstances.

Blood has a short shelf-life and must be continuously replenished. Donors can help by scheduling their appointment to give ahead of time which will help ensure the limited supplies are in the right place at the right time.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work tirelessly to implement additional mitigations to help us bridge this shortage. In the days and weeks ahead, the Red Cross will continue to closely monitor our supplies and adapt our collections as necessary to ensure we continue to deliver our lifesaving mission.

UPDATE 10:28 a.m. Wednesday:&nbsp;The American Red Cross has canceled today's blood drive. We are awaiting word as to why it happened.

Abilene a finalist for Best Historic Small Town for 5th year in a row; vote now

A Salina woman with multiple active warrants was arrested after she allegedly tried to steal a lighter from a dollar store on Monday.

Officers were dispatched to the Dollar General, 2000 S. Ninth Street, for the report of a theft in progress. Once there, an officer located Kelli Shumaker, 38, of Salina, inside the store, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

An employee reported seeing Shumaker putting a $4 lighter in her jacket.

Forrester said that Shumaker was known to have multiple active warrants, including the following.

●A warrant from Saline County District Court for failure to appear

●Two Salina Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear

●Three Salina Municipal Court warrants for probation violation

Shumaker was arrested on the warrants. While she was being searched, officers found the lighter and 1.8 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, Forrester said. Shumaker did not have a drug tax stamp for the substance.

In addition to the warrants, Shumaker also was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce presents Restaurant Week

MCPHERSON COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Canton Police Department are conducting a homicide investigation after a woman was found dead outside her home in Canton.

The Canton Police Department requested KBI assistance just before 4 p.m. on Monday. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team (CSRT) responded to the scene.

On Monday at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Canton Police Department received a 911 call indicating a female subject was unresponsive at 110 W. Allen Street in Canton. When officers arrived they located 52-year-old Briana L. Lance deceased in the backyard. They observed signs of injury and trauma to Lance, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation led to a suspect being identified and located.At approximately 5:40 p.m., Hayden C. Lance, 18, of Canton, was arrested for second-degree murder connected to the death of his mother, Briana Lance. He was booked into the McPherson County Jail.Formal charges are pending, and are expected to come from the McPherson County Attorney’s Office.&nbsp;All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.The investigation is ongoing.
