In an effort to both prevent and solve crime, the Abilene Police Department has partnered with Flock Safety to install two automated license plate readers (ALPRs) in Abilene.

These license plate readers have the ability to send real-time alerts to law enforcement when a stolen car or known wanted suspect from a national crime database passes by a camera. They can also send alerts if a vehicle associated with a missing person in AMBER or Silver Alert is detected.

Each ALPR inquiry requires a justification, and the data is never sold or shared with third parties. The cameras will be used to solve and reduce property and violent crime and are not intended for minor traffic or parking violations.

Flock Safety cameras are utilized by over 2,000 law enforcement agencies in 42 states. Law enforcement agencies have reported crime reductions of up to 70% when deploying Flock Safety in their communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast. Winds from the west at 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph and relative humidity as low as 23 percent are forecast.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a fire weather watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Friday evening for the following counties in our area.

Winds from the west to southwest, sustained at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph and relative humidity from 19 to 32 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

'Leaving Iowa' coming to Salina South Theatre stage this week

Just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Salina Police Department and Salina Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle injury accident at the intersection of W. Crawford Street and Montrose Street, according to Salina Fire Captain Allen Grant.&nbsp;

Grant said one person received treatment for minor injuries.

CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow).   By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

CoCoRaHS is in the final days of its big March volunteer recruiting event. In a good-natured competition, the organization's website has a state scoreboard that is updated hourly with the number of new volunteers in each state. As this story is being written, Kansas is tied with Wyoming for sixth place.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS <a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

CKF Addiction Treatment is asking members of the public to share their concerns and what they would like to discuss and learn more about during an upcoming forum.

"In an effort to engage and inform our community members of the efforts put forth by varying agencies in the Salina and Saline County area, we will be holding an educational forum to discuss developments in the cross-sections of mental health, substance abuse, criminal justice, and homelessness. This forum is to help facilitate growth, improvement, and change in these areas through discussion with our community members," CKF noted in a news release distributed this morning.

The forum is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. May 3 in the Salina Grace Community Resource Center, 142 S. Seventh Street. The forum is being organized by the CIT Council, a collaboration of local services for mental health, substance use disorder, housing, and criminal justice.

Public input sought prior to multi-faceted forum in May

An elderly Saline County man received a letter stating that he could be the beneficiary of a multi-million dollar life insurance policy, but he didn't fall for the scam. Instead, he reported it to the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

The letter was allegedly from an Ontario, Canada, law firm: Charles &amp; Associates. Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said the 80-year-old man was instructed to contact the firm at a Gmail address for more information about his alleged inheritance.

The letter, a copy of which was provided by the sheriff's office, claims that a client of the firm died of COVID-19 approximately two years ago, and no relatives have come forward to claim an insurance policy worth $11,550,300. If the policy is not claimed in two to three years, it will have to be turned over to "the abandoned property division."

The letter goes on to ask the man to join the letter writer in a partnership to claim the policy "in view of the striking similarity in same last name and nationality with the deceased. If you permit me to add your name to the policy, all proceeds will be processed on your behalf."

The letter then states that the letter writer wants 10 percent of the proceeds from the insurance policy to go to charities, with the remaining 90 percent shared between the Saline County man and the letter writer.

Hughes said a sheriff's office employee called the phone number in the heading of the letter and talked to a person with a heavy foreign accent who, of course, would not provide any information about the operation.

Similar letters, some with differing law firm names and contact persons, have been arriving in mailboxes across the state in recent days.

MANHATTAN —Kansas State University is recognizing five outstanding Kansas high school science teachers with the inaugural Kansas State University High School Science Teacher of the Year Awards. The awards highlight and reward inspirational and impactful high school science teachers throughout the state.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/chem/" target="_blank">chemistry</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/geology/" target="_blank">geology</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.phys.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">physics</a>&nbsp;departments in K-State's&nbsp;<a href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Arts and Sciences</a>&nbsp;selected the five award recipients. According to Pamela Kempton, professor and head of geology, students majoring in chemistry, geology or physics were asked to name the science teachers who inspired them to study science or made a difference in their growth and development. The nominees were then invited to apply, and a committee selected the finalists. The following high school teachers are recipients of the Kansas State University High School Science Teacher of the Year Awards: • Science Teacher of the Year in chemistry: Nikki Chamberlain, gifted facilitator and former longtime chemistry teacher at Salina South High School,&nbsp;Salina. • Science Teachers of the Year in geology: Staci Cavanaugh, earth and space science teacher at Olathe North High School,&nbsp;Olathe,&nbsp;and Mariah Ramos, integrated science teacher at Spring Hill High School,&nbsp;Spring Hill. • Science Teachers of the Year in physics: Drew Smith, a physics teacher at Olathe Northwest High School,&nbsp;Olathe,&nbsp;and Mitchell Spade, a physics teacher at Shawnee Heights High School,&nbsp;Tecumseh. The following high school teachers are recipients of the Kansas State University High School Science Teacher of the Year Awards: • Science Teacher of the Year in chemistry: Nikki Chamberlain, gifted facilitator and former longtime chemistry teacher at Salina South High School,&nbsp;Salina. • Science Teachers of the Year in geology: Staci Cavanaugh, earth and space science teacher at Olathe North High School,&nbsp;Olathe,&nbsp;and Mariah Ramos, integrated science teacher at Spring Hill High School,&nbsp;Spring Hill. • Science Teachers of the Year in physics: Drew Smith, a physics teacher at Olathe Northwest High School,&nbsp;Olathe,&nbsp;and Mitchell Spade, a physics teacher at Shawnee Heights High School,&nbsp;Tecumseh. "High school teachers scarcely get the recognition they deserve, and the work they do is critically important to the state and to the educational and scholarly mission of Kansas State University," said Christer Aakeröy, university distinguished professor and head of chemistry. The award recipients, their nominators and a few of their current students are invited to a recognition luncheon March 31 on the Manhattan campus. Each teacher will be presented a $500 cash award, a certificate and an artistic piece of glassware custom-made by the university's scientific glassblower, Jim Hodgson. The visitors will also get a personalized tour of the campus, including some laboratories. "The past few years have been particularly challenging for our high school educators," said Tim Bolton, William and Joan Porter professor and head of physics. "So, we wanted to acknowledge their hard work and recognize those extraordinary high school teachers who inspire students to go into sciences." The&nbsp;<a href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Arts and Sciences</a>&nbsp;at K-State offers undergraduate and graduate degrees spanning the natural and quantitative sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and arts and humanities, along with research opportunities, hands-on experiences and robust advising to prepare students for successful careers.&nbsp;

I could be just searching for a nice Saturday to visit a park or checking to see if I need to carry an umbrella to the office. For farmers and ranchers, however, spring weather is high stakes and full of questions. Will there be enough rain to awaken the wheat crop and carry it through to maturity? If there is, will it be too much to prevent planting corn and soybeans? Will there be enough moisture to grow enough grass for cattle to graze? Unfortunately for more than three quarters of the state right now, the biggest question is when will the drought break? The northeast corner is the only portion of Kansas not experiencing a moisture deficiency currently. More than 40 counties are wholly or in part in an exceptional drought according to the most recent report. Most natural disasters are quick, but a drought is an open-ended catastrophe that grinds on day after day. Pictures and video do little to convey the effects the absence of water has on those who live through it. At least with a tornado or flood, you can start picking up the pieces relatively quickly. With a drought, you’re just left to endure until the rains return. We’re moving into the height of severe weather season in Kansas. Thanks to the drought, fire is also a potential hazard in addition to the usual thunderstorms and tornadoes. While we can’t prevent severe weather outbreaks, there’s plenty of steps to take in advance to be prepared. It starts with developing a good plan while hoping you never need to implement it. This can be as simple as a space in a basement with some bottled water, a battery-operated radio and some flashlights or candles for storms capable of producing tornados. Now’s a good time to check those batteries if they’ve been sitting in a stockpile for a while. For those who don’t have a basement, a windowless room is the next safest place to ride out a storm. If you’re outside, find a low-lying area, preferably away from trees, to lie flat and cover your head with your arms. In the event of a flashflood, immediately move to higher ground and don’t drive through flooded roadways. Today's Highlight in History: On March 29, 2004, President George W. Bush welcomed seven former Soviet-bloc nations (Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Latvia and Estonia) into NATO during a White House ceremony.

In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln ordered plans for a relief expedition to sail to South Carolina's Fort Sumter, which was still in the hands of Union forces despite repeated demands by the Confederacy that it be turned over.

In 1867, Britain's Parliament passed, and Queen Victoria signed, the British North America Act creating the Dominion of Canada, which came into being the following July.

In 1943, World War II rationing of meat, fats and cheese began, limiting consumers to store purchases of an average of about two pounds a week for beef, pork, lamb and mutton using a coupon system.

In 1951, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted in New York of conspiracy to commit espionage for the Soviet Union. (They were executed in June 1953.)

In 1971, Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr. was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese civilians in the 1968 My Lai massacre. (Calley ended up serving three years under house arrest.) A 16-story building that was about to be completed collapsed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 36 people, most of them laborers or bystanders.

Five years ago: Russia announced the expulsion of more than 150 diplomats, including 60 Americans, and said it was closing a U.S. consulate in retaliation for Western expulsions of Russian diplomats over the poisoning of an ex-spy and his daughter in Britain. Malala Yousafzai returned home to Pakistan for a four-day visit, the first by the 20-year-old Nobel laureate since she was shot by the Taliban five years earlier for speaking out in support of education of girls. The 2018 baseball season began with a home run from Ian Happ of the Chicago Cubs on the season's first pitch, while Giancarlo Stanton hit two homers in his debut with the New York Yankees.

One year ago: Russia announced it would significantly scale back military operations near Ukraine's capital and a northern city, as the possibility of a deal to end the grinding war came into view. (The talks would not lead to a deal and the war would continue). President Joe Biden signed a bill into law making lynching a federal hate crime, more than 100 years after such legislation was first proposed. The Foo Fighters canceled all upcoming concert dates four days after the death of the band's drummer, Taylor Hawkins.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas State University Sales Team competed in the National Collegiate Sales Competition March 3-6, 2023, and finished in 17th&nbsp;place out of 144 competitors from 72 universities. The competition was hosted by Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga., with Gartner as the 2023 product sponsor. More than 30 companies were present and looking to hire the next generation of sales talent. Two students from the K-State Sales Team competed in the role-play competition: Hunter Hartner, junior in professional strategic selling,&nbsp;Belleville;&nbsp;andLydia Johnson, senior in professional strategic selling and Spanish,&nbsp;Prior Lake, Minnesota. Taylor Moorman, sophomore in professional strategic selling,&nbsp;Emporia,&nbsp;was selected as the student alternate. Moorman traveled with the team and competed in speed selling events. Students competed in role-play scenarios selling Gartner for High Tech Leaders to various industries. Each role-play was 20 minutes long, and students were tasked with uncovering the needs of the prospect through effective questioning and then presenting to the prospect the value Gartner could provide them in their current situation. Both Hartner and Johnson advanced to the quarterfinals, placing 29th and 36th respectively in the competition. This year, the National Collegiate Sales Competition, or NCSC, celebrated its 25th&nbsp;anniversary. The NCSC is the largest and longest-running university sales role-play competition in existence. It provides a venue for dedicated collegiate sales students to improve their skills and pursue career opportunities with top professional sales organizations. "I want to thank Terry Loe, professor of marketing at Kennesaw State University and executive director of the National Collegiate Sales Competition, as well as the rest of the Kennesaw State University team, Gartner and many others for providing this opportunity for our students," said Kellie Jackson, sales team coach. "I'm extremely proud of our students' efforts and hard work leading up to and during the competition. This competition truly represents the best upcoming sales talent and is a great opportunity to not only develop their skills but network with both peers and professionals." The K-State Sales Team is in the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/national-strategic-selling-institute/" target="_blank">College of Business Administration's National Strategic Selling Institute</a>, which has been named one of the top sales programs in the country for eleven straight years by the Sales Education Foundation. The team consists of students who are enrolled in the certificate or major in professional strategic selling. In the fall of 2018, Kansas State University became just the 19th university in the U.S. to offer a&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/national-strategic-selling-institute/pss-major.html" target="_blank">major in professional strategic selling</a>. Students can also earn a&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/national-strategic-selling-institute/certificate.html" target="_blank">certificate in professional strategic selling</a>, which is open to all majors at the university. The professional strategic selling program introduces students to the fundamentals of sales, and the innovative curriculum and sales labs allow students to develop the skills needed to be successful. K-State Sales Team finishes in top 20 at national competition

The NCK Technical College held its 19th annual GMAW welding competition. The college division was March 1. The high school competition was March 2 and March 3. 

Participants for the college competition included NCKTC- Beloit, NCKTC-Hays, Salina Area Technical College, Hutchinson Community College, Central Community College- Hastings, Neb., Central Community College- Columbus, Neb., and Central Community College, Grand Island, Neb.

The competition allows students the opportunity to demonstrate their blueprint reading skills to fabricate various weldments and showcase their ability to weld in all positions using the GMAW process. A written test is also given to evaluate their technical knowledge of the GMAW process. Blueprints were developed by Matt Brown and Derek Larimore of Caterpillar Work Tools in Wamego and the written test was developed by Wes Mosier. The blueprints and test were presented to the students the day of the competition to ensure a fair and equitable contest. Weld inspection was done by Certified Welding Inspectors, advisory members and industry professionals. Machines were donated by Lincoln Electric, Miller Electric, and wire was donated by ESAB electric. Matheson Gas supplied shielding gas, Caterpillar Work Tools of Wamego, AG-CO Beloit and Bohnert welding supplied the metal. Prizes were donated by Matheson of Hastings, Neb., AG-CO Beloit, Lincoln Electric, Miller Electric, Winkel Manufacturing- Glen Elder, Outlaw Leather, Markal, Benchmark Abrasives, Everlast, Blue Demon and Webber Gross Welding- Bazine, KS.

NCK Technical CollegeThe NCK Technical College held its 19th annual GMAW welding competition. The college division was March 1. The high school competition was March 2 and March 3. Participants for the college competition included NCKTC- Beloit, NCKTC-Hays, Salina Area Technical College, Hutchinson Community College, Central Community College- Hastings, Neb., Central Community College- Columbus, Neb., and Central Community College, Grand Island, Neb.The competition allows students the opportunity to demonstrate their blueprint reading skills to fabricate various weldments and showcase their ability to weld in all positions using the GMAW process. A written test is also given to evaluate their technical knowledge of the GMAW process. Blueprints were developed by Matt Brown and Derek Larimore of Caterpillar Work Tools in Wamego and the written test was developed by Wes Mosier. The blueprints and test were presented to the students the day of the competition to ensure a fair and equitable contest. Weld inspection was done by Certified Welding Inspectors, advisory members and industry professionals. Machines were donated by Lincoln Electric, Miller Electric, and wire was donated by ESAB electric. Matheson Gas supplied shielding gas, Caterpillar Work Tools of Wamego, AG-CO Beloit and Bohnert welding supplied the metal. Local, area students place at GMAW welding competition

MANHATTAN – A smile or words of encouragement may seem like small things, but Erin Yelland knows they add up.&nbsp;

“We know from research that having a positive outlook on aging actually adds 7 ½ years to your life,” said Yelland, a specialist on aging with K-State Research and Extension. “If you have that positive outlook, you’re able to embrace aging and look for the positives. And it’s going to add years to your life.”&nbsp;

Yelland, in fact, has come up with an acronym that supports her belief that living with positivity is the healthy path for most. The acronym is SMILE BIG.&nbsp;

●Successful aging requires practicing positivity.&nbsp;“If we have a positive attitude, we are more likely to make changes and implement healthy behaviors into our lives that are going to help us be successful as we age.”

●Manage our expectations. “We are not always going to be at the pinnacle of healthy aging, and that’s okay. We need to make our expectations something that are attainable.”

●Interact with positivity.&nbsp;“Research shows that when you interact with positive people and places, you’re more likely to embrace positivity as well.”

●Looking for positives.&nbsp;“We know that bad things happen sometimes, but when you take the time to truly reflect, I bet you’ll find something positive that came from the situation. Thinking about the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to stay home more and make more meaningful connections with our family members.”

●Escaping ageism.&nbsp;“Make it a priority to escape stereotypes associated with aging. Your age does not define who you are.”

●Being healthy.&nbsp;“We know that there are a lot of healthy behaviors that we should be doing, but we don’t always do them. Eating healthfully, exercising regularly, taking care of our brain…all of those things lead to successful aging.”

●‘I Can’ approach.&nbsp;“Instead of saying, ‘I can’t do this or that anymore,’ take the ‘I Can’ approach. For example, ‘I can utilize a cane that will help me move around more safely…’”

●Give yourself grace.&nbsp;“Sometimes we’re going to mess up or have a bad day. We need to give ourselves grace so we’re not beating ourselves down when we don’t always embrace positivity. It is okay to not be okay.”&nbsp;

“One of the things I heard when I was young was that older adults are supposed to have gray hair, sit in a rocking chair, knit and stay home…” Yelland said. “That’s really quite the opposite of what older adults are able to do. Many are able to stay active and engaged and not fall into the stereotypical mindset that older adults are supposed to be sedentary and stuck at home.”&nbsp;

Yelland said K-State Research and Extension agents across Kansas are working to help older adults remain independent, exercise and maintain their living spaces in ways that help them remain healthy.&nbsp;

●<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3058.pdf">Simple Home Modification for Aging in Place</a>. This publication outlines free or low-cost changes to make the home a safer place to live. Some of the modifications include removing such trip hazards as rugs; installing grab bars and sturdy handrails; moving frequently used items to lower shelves in the kitchen; and arranging furniture strategically to reduce hazards.

●<a href="https://www.aging.k-state.edu/programs/embracing-aging/embracing-aging.html">Keys to Embracing Aging.</a> This program outlines 12 ways to healthy living, physical activity, healthy eating, brain health, staying social and taking care of finances, among other topics.&nbsp;

“We do a lot of community-based education on healthy aging, and how to support caregivers, and how we can embrace aspects of positive aging,” Yelland said. “We are also doing work in communities to help make sure that older adults are considered when we are creating policies and practices in our communities.”&nbsp;

“Extension really values the lives of older adults and the big and important roles that they play in our lives and our communities. We’re working to enhance that and make sure that older adults are not the throw-away generation.”&nbsp;

HAYS –&nbsp;Fort Hays State University's Kansas Academy of Mathematics &amp; Science (KAMS) is offering a STEM Summit beginning June 4 and ending June 6. The summit is open to all incoming 8th, 9th, and 10th-grade students.

Students will work in teams, meet new friends, and perform exciting hands-on experiments that make science, technology, engineering, and math come alive.

Campers will choose from a broad range of activities, including:

●Use computer-aided design technologies like Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Revit to produce a one-of-a-kind 3-dimensional object. Learn how 3D scanners and virtual reality will impact the engineering design world.

The registration fee is $25, non-refundable for Kansas residents and $100 for non-Kansas residents. UPDATE: Sheriff ID's body found south of Salina

A Salina man who allegedly drove his car into the back of a pickup Monday night also faces requested drug charges after police say they found methamphetamine and 155 pills believed to be fentanyl in his possession.

Officers were sent to the 700 block of E. Neal Avenue at approximately 10:55 p.m. Monday for the report of a car hitting a parked pickup, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. When they arrived, they found Gregory Walburn, 36, of Salina, with his 2006 Lincoln LS that had run into the back of a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500.

Forrester said Walburn appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Walburn also was found to have a felony arrest warrant from Dickinson County. 

A search conducted when Walburn was taken into custody allegedly found 155 pills believed to be fentanyl and a plastic bag of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, Forrester said. Officers also conducted a DUI investigation of Walburn.

Forrester said Walburn was arrested on the following requested charges.

Salina man arrested after wreck; fentanyl, meth allegedly found

A Colorado man was arrested on requested charges of battery of a law enforcement officer after an incident that began at a south Salina restaurant Monday afternoon.

Officers were sent to Chick-fil-A, 2245 S. Ninth Street, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday for the report of a man passed out on a bench inside the restaurant, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Several employees also reported that the man had been disorderly toward them while he was in the restaurant.

When officers arrived, they made contact with Jose Pastrana Ramirez, 33, of Greeley, Colo. Pastrana Ramirez, who appeared to be intoxicated, refused to leave the restaurant when officers asked and was taken into custody, Forrester said.

Because it was believed that Pastrana Ramirez was highly intoxicated, officers transported him to Salina Regional Health Center to be checked out. When officers were getting Pastrana Ramirez out of the vehicle at Salina Regional, he allegedly spit on them twice. He also allegedly grabbed an officer's leg, Forrester said.

Once Pastrana Ramirez was cleared by medical personnel, he was transported to the Saline County Jail, where he was booked in on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Colorado man faces requested battery of a law enforcement officer charges

Police are looking for a pickup that was stolen in west-central Salina Monday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 belonging to a 64-year-old Salina woman was stolen sometime between 3-9:30 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of W. Iron Avenue. 

Forrester said the woman was letting an acquaintance drive the pickup. The man, who works nights, told police that he had parked the pickup on the east side of his residence at 3 p.m. Monday. When he woke up at 9:30 p.m., the pickup was gone. The man told police that he still had the keys to the pickup in his possession.

The pickup, valued at $5,000, is red and has a Kansas license plate of 755ECQ, Forrester said. It also had a window sticker with the words "Big Ass Toy" on it.

Earhart Hall will open later this year, and the facility's name recognizes the campus's history of teaching future aeronauts. "Providing a strong campus community helps students succeed both inside and outside of the classroom,"&nbsp;said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life.&nbsp;"Choosing the name Earhart Hall gives us the opportunity to honor past aviation leaders while hopefully inspiring our current students to dream big and make&nbsp;an impact in their future."
