BRIDGEPORT - A minor earthquake rattled part of far southern Saline Count Friday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:26 p.m. Friday east-southeast of Bridgeport. It was centered just north of the Saline-McPherson county line east of S. Hopkins Road.

Small quake shakes part of far southern Saline County Friday

People gathered at Salina's City-County Building at noon Friday in support of transgender people on Trans Visibility Day.

The Die at City Hall event from noon to 1 p.m. Friday included people who acted as though they were dead to represent those who have died because of anti-transgender bias.

9th Judicial District magistrate interviews set for Thursday

Hailed by "Time Out New York" as “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years," "Something Rotten" is coming to Theatre Salina Friday through April 16. 

Salina Post sat down with <a href="https://salinatheatre.com/">Theatre Salina</a>&nbsp;Executive Director Michael Spicer to find out the inside scoop on what makes this farcical Shakespearean musical a must see.

A musical "romp through Shakespearean England"

Based on the book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell and the music of Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick, Theatre Salina, 303 E. Iron Avenue, in partnership with Kansas Wesleyan University, is stepping back in time to Shakespearean England. 

Follow the tale of two brothers who set out to write the world's first musical in this hilarious mash up of sixteenth-century Shakespeare and twenty-first-century Broadway.&nbsp;

Spicer said this will be the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that Kansas Wesleyan University and Theatre Salina are putting their creative minds together to create a truly hilarious production.

"This is a partnership&nbsp; with Kansas Wesleyan University. We did it for a number of years, and then the pandemic hit, and we had to put it to bed," Spicer said."We're bringing it back this year as opposed to being every year, it'll be every other year."

Spicer said beginning this year, every other year, Theatre Salina will pick a show that is specifically tailored to have roles that are available not only for community members, but for KWU students as well. 

"There are four KWU students in the show. KWU is providing the orchestra, musical director and the pit conductor and Theatre Salina is all of the rest of the creative team," Spicer said. "It is one of the funniest shows that we've done in a very long time, which is quite a compliment, because we did 'The Play That Goes Wrong' this time last year. And that was pretty much the funniest thing I've ever done."&nbsp;

Spicer said even if you hate Shakespeare, you're going to love this show.

"But if you love Shakespeare, you're going to love this show on a whole different level, because it's all about these two brothers and they want to have success in the theater. And so they go to a soothsayer, and the soothsayer, brilliantly played by Bill Brown- when you turn Bill loose on the stage, he is a force of nature," Spicer said.&nbsp;

The soothsayer tells the two brothers the only way to write a musical that can stand the test of time is to include tap dancing, singing and dancing. And so the brothers write a plot for their musical and they show it to their financial backer and it is about the Black Death.&nbsp;

"So they find another financial backer, and and I am not going to tell you what the musical is about because there is a visual, that goes with it that is hilarious!" Spicer said. "It is a fantastic comedic romp through Shakespearean England."&nbsp;

"Something Rotten" will be showing at Theatre Salina on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between March 31 and April 16, excluding Easter Sunday.&nbsp;

Iron Avenue, in partnership with Kansas Wesleyan University, is stepping back in time to Shakespearean England. Follow the tale of two brothers who set out to write the world's first musical in this hilarious mash up of sixteenth-century Shakespeare and twenty-first-century Broadway.&nbsp;<figure>

We did it for a number of years, and then the pandemic hit, and we had to put it to bed," Spicer said."We're bringing it back this year as opposed to being every year, it'll be every other year."Spicer said beginning this year, every other year, Theatre Salina will pick a show that is specifically tailored to have roles that are available not only for community members, but for KWU students as well. "There are four KWU students in the show. KWU is providing the orchestra, musical director and the pit conductor and Theatre Salina is all of the rest of the creative team," Spicer said. "It is one of the funniest shows that we've done in a very long time, which is quite a compliment, because we did 'The Play That Goes Wrong' this time last year. And that was pretty much the funniest thing I've ever done."&nbsp;Spicer said even if you hate Shakespeare, you're going to love this show."But if you love Shakespeare, you're going to love this show on a whole different level, because it's all about these two brothers and they want to have success in the theater. And so they go to a soothsayer, and the soothsayer, brilliantly played by Bill Brown- when you turn Bill loose on the stage, he is a force of nature," Spicer said.&nbsp;The soothsayer tells the two brothers the only way to write a musical that can stand the test of time is to include tap dancing, singing and dancing. And so the brothers write a plot for their musical and they show it to their financial backer and it is about the Black Death.&nbsp;"So they find another financial backer, and and I am not going to tell you what the musical is about because there is a visual, that goes with it that is hilarious!" Spicer said. Two people were unsuccessful in their attempt to steal an ATM from a south Salina bank early Friday morning.

Officers were sent to Solomon State Bank, 605 E. Magnolia Road at approximately 3:25 a.m. Friday after a witness driving by reported seeing a pickup backed up to the ATM, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The witness told police of seeing two people attempting to put a strap around the ATM.

It is believed that the witness driving by spooked the duo, as they left in a white Ford F350 before completing their task, Forrester said.

The pickup, which turned out to be recently stolen in Salina, was found abandoned a few blocks away on Mayfair Drive. One of its windows was smashed.

The owner of the pickup, a 41-year-old Salina man, told police that the following items were missing from the pickup, Forrester said.

●Craftsman and Milwaukee power tools valued at $2,000

●A black and yellow bag with miscellaneous hand tools valued at $300

●A bag with tinning tools valued at $500

The ATM had pry marks on it. Damage was estimated at $500.

Forrester said police are looking for surveillance video from the area.

Motorist apparently spooks duo attempting to steal ATM in south Salina

The Lions District 17A convention next month in Salina will have an entertainment and food component that is open to the public.

"Happy Days" is the theme of the district's convention on April 28-29 in Salina. Lions District Governor Richard Webster told Salina Post that District 17A is comprised of 73 clubs and more than 1,500 members from northeast Kansas.

The public event is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. April 28 at City Lights Stage, S. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street. Those attending are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and enjoy entertainment and a parade. Saddle Jack's Bar B Cue food truck will be on hand.

In addition to the parade, the event is to include a Fonzie look-alike contest, best cheerleader outfit, and classic vehicles.

Scheduled events also include the following.

3:30 p.m. Ritchie Ghostking (reviving the Kings of Country Music)

6 p.m. Parade (The route begins at Elm Street and will proceed south on Santa Fe Avenue to South Street.)

On March 21, 1:11 a.m., officers with the Salina Police Department were dispatched to the Comfort Inn &amp; Suites at 1949 N. Ninth Street, regarding an aggravated burglary.

An employee reported she noticed an individual walking around the hotel lobby. When the employee went to investigate, the person jumped over the counter and began taking cash from the register. The suspect fled the area on foot when confronted by the employee. 

The suspect was wearing a dark-colored camo patterned coat, dark-colored blue jeans, gray gloves, a mask over their face, and gray slip on shoes.

UPDATE 7:15 p.m. Thursday: The Salina Police Department this evening has announced that Garret Crutchfield has turned himself in.

The cause of the death of a man whose body was found dumped along the side of the road in north Salina in late January has been ruled a fentanyl overdose and one of two people sought in the case has been arrested, the Salina Police Department reported this afternoon.

At 1:05 a.m. Jan. 28, the dispatch center received a call from a citizen who reported a body in the 1900 block of N. Fifth Street. In a news release issued Jan. 30, police identified the body as that of 20-year-old Brendon Thomas Wade Reed.

This afternoon, the Salina Police Department issued the following information related to the case.

An autopsy was conducted on January 29, 2023, and no signs of fatal trauma were located during the examination. The autopsy and toxicology findings have been received for Mr. Reed. Mr. Reed’s cause of death is listed as a fentanyl overdose. Salina Police Detectives continued to investigate.

On March 28, 2023, warrants were issued for Jack Allen Kelley and Garret Clayton Crutchfield, Salina residents, for criminal desecration of a body and interference with law enforcement.

On March 29, 2023, Jack Allen Kelley, a Salina resident, was booked into the Saline County Jail for one count of criminal desecration of a body and one count of interference with law enforcement.

If anyone knows Garret Clayton Crutchfield’s location, please contact the Salina Police Department at (785) 826-7210 and ask for dispatch to report his location.

The autopsy findings, toxicology report, and information from the case investigation have been provided to the Saline County Attorney, Jeff Ebel.

K-State: Area students among new College of Ag Ambassadors

If passed into law, can Education Saving Accounts and tax credit vouchers withstand a constitutional challenge?&nbsp;&nbsp; That’s a question rolling around the state house.&nbsp;

The concern, at this point, is speculation since these two school choice bills have yet to go to Governor Kelly for her signature or veto.

The ESA bill currently creates&nbsp;a fund for families to use taxpayer dollars for private and homeschooling expenses. In its first year, the program would be available to public school students testing at the lowest grade level or receiving free or reduced-price lunch.&nbsp; Eventually families of four making $180,000 per year or more would be eligible.&nbsp;

The tax credit bill enlarges the current tax credit scholarship fund.&nbsp; Fully implemented, it would give about $5,000 per qualifying student per year to attend any accredited or unaccredited private school or use for other educational expenses.&nbsp;

Donors to the scholarship fund could apply for a 70 percent tax credit.&nbsp; Currently the fund is limited to low income, low performing students but the 2023 bill would expand incrementally to include almost all student applicants regardless of parent’s income, including students who always have attended a private school or been homeschooled.&nbsp;

Currently 11 states allow various types of ESAs, and 20 states allow tax credit scholarships.&nbsp;

Do ESAs that directly fund private schools with public tax dollars and scholarships that indirectly reduce education funds through tax credits violate the Kansas Constitution?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tax Credit scholarships may more easily withstand legal challenges because they are funded by donations.&nbsp; The loss to the state comes from fewer tax dollars collected due to the refundable tax credits.&nbsp; ESAs are directly funded from tax dollars budgeted for education.&nbsp; Both bills siphon public funds from public schools.

Here are reasons for concern: &nbsp;First, the Kansas Constitution creates a single system of common schools.<a></a>

Article 6: (1) “The legislature shall provide for a state board of education which shall have general supervision of public schools, educational institutions and all the educational interests of the state.”

The proposed bills create two separate systems—one governed by the state board of education and a new system governed by the Kansas treasurer to administer the scholarships and ESAs.&nbsp;

Second, Article 6:&nbsp; 2&nbsp;(a) states, “The state board of education shall perform such other duties as may be provided by law.”

Currently there are no laws that direct the state board of education to oversee schools other than public schools.&nbsp; Moreover, proponents of the bills advocate a main value is that funds would go to schools governed by the state treasurer not the state board of education.

Third, the Kansas constitution is clear.&nbsp;&nbsp;Article 6: 6 (c) “No religious sect or sects shall control any part of the public educational funds.”

Recently the U. S. Supreme Court ruled&nbsp;in &nbsp;<a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/carson-v-makin/" target="_blank">Carson v. Makin</a>&nbsp; to require states to fund private religious schools if the states fund any other private schools.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his majority opinion that the ruling does not require states to fund private schools—but once they do,&nbsp;religious schools can’t be excluded.&nbsp;

In January an Ohio lawsuit challenging the state’s voucher program moved forward to Franklin County Court.&nbsp; More than 100 school districts signed onto the lawsuit advocating a&nbsp;"secure"&nbsp;and single "system of common schools.”&nbsp;

Who among us would want another long, costly constitutional confrontation over Kansas schools?&nbsp; &nbsp;Nevertheless, this battle may be ongoing well into the future.&nbsp;

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the person who stole a car and then led officers on a chase through part of Salina before fleeing on foot early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, an officer in the 500 block of W. Iron Avenue noticed a vehicle with an inoperable headlight. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled, leading to a pursuit through part of west-central Salina bounded by W. Walnut Street, W. Prescott Avenue, S. College Avenue, and S. Ninth Street, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

During the pursuit, the vehicle, a 2013 Dodge Avenger, struck a tree in the front yard of a residence in the 500 block of S. Phillips Avenue. At that point, a passenger jumped out of the car and fled the scene. The driver backed up and then continued driving for another few blocks until the car became disabled in the intersection of S. Phillips Avenue and Morrison Avenue, Hanus said. The driver fled on foot.

Police contacted the owner of the vehicle, a 64-year-old Salina woman, who told them the car had been stolen from behind a residence in the 200 block of W. Prescott Avenue sometime after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Hanus said officers are checking all leads in the case. He encouraged anyone living in the area of the pursuit who might have surveillance video to contact the Salina Police Department.

Primary Function: This entry-level full-time position located in the Ellsworth, Hays or Salina, Kansas office will involve being a member of a survey crew performing boundary, topography, ALTA, right of way, and construction surveys for public and private clients. Also responsible for the operation and maintenance of survey equipment, taking field notes, data collection, performing calculations and working with staff and clients on these projects. Involvement in the office will include reducing survey data, performing calculations, copying and filing of this data. Work may include preparation of survey drawings. Other duties are anticipated to include CAD drafting, construction observation, materials testing, and other duties as assigned.
