Did you know that April is National Autism Awareness Month?

On Saturday, approximately 70 people gathered at Campbell Plaza, 126 S. Santa Fe Avenue, to raise awareness and celebrate Autism Awareness Month.&nbsp;

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is more common than all cases of childhood cancer, congenital heart defects, juvenile diabetes, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined.

Andrea Maag, 35, Salina Central graduate and Salina native, organized the event after witnessing the successes of the walk for autism fundraisers in Wichita. Maag said she was one of the first women diagnosed with autism in Saline County.

Event attendees took selfies in the photo booth, listened to live music and participated in a raffle. All of the proceeds from the raffle went to Heartspring, a Wichita non profit whose mission is, "to be a leader and innovator in providing clinically supported services through education and therapies for children with special needs to empower them to grow and learn on a path to a more independent life."&nbsp;

Heartspring provides services and therapies for children with complex needs, as well as developmental disabilities- including autism.&nbsp;

Even though this was the first time Maag had organized an autism awareness event, the event went well. In total the event raffle raised $384.

"I just want to say&nbsp; thank you to everyone who has donated to the raffle, and thank you to all the bands who came and played," Maag said.&nbsp;

Maag said she is currently in the process of writing a book about her life as an autistic woman. She said she hopes to have it ready in a year or two.&nbsp;

When asked if there was something she would like to share with the community about autism, Maag said, "It [autism] is more common than you think, and sometimes communicating is hard, but I am always trying to improve."&nbsp;

Autism Awareness Month fundraiser draws local bands, advocates to Salina

All counties in our area have been upgraded to red flag warnings for Tuesday.

The fire weather watches that were issued Sunday are no longer in effect.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Extreme to catastrophic grassland fire danger is forecast.

Southwest winds at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph, and relative humidity as low as 11 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Sustained winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. Southwest winds during the afternoon switch to the west-northwest during the evening behind a cold front. Relative humidity falling into the 10 to 20 percent range during the afternoon and early evening is forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Winds initially out of the southwest during the early to mid-afternoon hours, sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are forecast. They then will shift and become west and northwest during the late afternoon and evening hours, sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 50 to 55 mph. Relative humidity is expected to be as low as 13 percent for several hours Tuesday afternoon, before steadily rising during the evening hours.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly. Use caution if engaging in activities that could result in fire ignition.

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a 17-year-old girl that occurred at a home on North Kuney Street in Abilene.

The investigation began Jan. 16, according to a media release from police. An autopsy determined the girl died from fentanyl intoxication.

On Monday, police arrested 18-year-old Daisy L. Skilling on an outstanding warrant from Dickinson County District Court, charging her with&nbsp;distribution of a controlled substance causing death, use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, according to online jail records. She is being held on $150,000 bond.

Saline County commissioners to consider employee policy revisions

If you have some unused and unneeded prescription drugs that you aren't sure what to do with, the Saline County Sheriff's Office can help.

Sheriff's office personnel will be at multiple locations as a part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 22, Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski said this morning. 

According to the DEA website, "The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications."

Sheriff's office personnel will be collecting unused and unneeded prescription drugs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 22 at the following locations, Kochanowski said.

●Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue

If you can't make it to one of the drop-off sites that day, you can drop off your unused and unneeded prescription drugs in the lobby of the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 251 N. 10th Street, during regular business hours. Additionally, there also is a collection bin for needles and other sharps in the lobby of the sheriff's office.

Kochanowski said that since Oct. 7, 2013, the sheriff's office has collected 12,998.8 pounds of drugs for safe disposal.

Saline Co. Sheriff's Office to participate in DEA drug take back day

A Minneapolis man was arrested on requested trespassing and drug charges after an incident in north Salina Sunday evening.

Officers were sent to 1007 W. North Street at approximately 6:15 p.m. Sunday for the report of an alarm. When they arrived, they detected multiple alarms going off in a south storage building on the property owned by Michael Sampson, 54, of Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Officers observed a white male wearing a blue hooded jacket, hat, and backpack running through the building. When the officers went around the building, they saw the man standing in a treeline west of the building, Forrester said.

A pursuit on foot ensued before officers were able to take David Boeschling, 24, of Minneapolis, into custody.

Forrester said Boeschling was arrested on the following requested charges.

Minor earthquake rattles part of northern Marion County Sunday

Are you over 75? &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;–You remember the children paralyzed with polio wearing crutches? &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;–Some adult polio victims were in “iron lungs” in order to continue breathing. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;–Parks and swimming pools were closed to control the spread. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;–We left our lights on at night so the mothers’ “March of Dimes” could come collect what little we could spare to contribute to research. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;–The Jonas Salk polio vaccine was finally released. We were so relieved!

Elimination of a major disease using vaccination had already occurred with smallpox. Both smallpox and polio are caused by viruses that, unlike the seasonal flu or COVID-19, do not evolve major variants. Thanks to vaccination, the last case of smallpox in the U.S. was in 1949. Worldwide vaccination and quarantine brought an end to smallpox in the wild in the 1970s in Somalia, Africa.

The small, southwest Kansas town of Protection was the first in the nation to be fully immunized against polio. Elimination of polio worldwide should have occurred a decade ago, except for the mistaken belief by the Taliban that the vaccine was an attempt at sterilization. Polio may now be more difficult to drive to extinction. But the major problem with continuing vaccination and the world benefitting from huge numbers of lives being saved is the vaccination ignorance that has grown recently in the United States. Accelerated in the shadow of the recent pandemic, we have seen politics and medical ignorance overwhelm science and our history with smallpox and polio.

Across the country, bills are being written and passed that are guaranteeing a rise in infectious diseases that are completely preventable. Most dangerous are those bills that undermine the vaccine requirements for youngsters attending school. Kansas SB 20 is one such bill.

The CDC website provides a map that links to each state’s vaccination-for-school requirements. Current common school vaccine requirements include: Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DtaP/Tdap); Hepatitis A (Hep A); Hepatitis B (Hep B); Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR); Meningococcal serogroups; Poliomyelitis (IPV/tOPV); Varicella (Chickenpox) and others.

For decades, the health of American schoolchildren has been much better because of the far lower levels, and in some cases total elimination, of these diseases. But not every child can be vaccinated due to medical reasons. A small number are immuno-compromised, being unable to develop the vaccine’s protection and being especially vulnerable to infections. Therefore it becomes more important that classmates around them are vaccinated so they will not carry the diseases to their weaker classmate.

The number of students who need to be vaccinated to protect their vulnerable classmate varies by the contagion rate. If on average an infected person spreads a disease to three others, the basic reproductive number (called R naught) is three. This R number varies, depending on whether others are immune due to prior exposure or vaccination. Contagion of various diseases varies: Ebola outbreak in Congo (1.5–2.5), HIV/AIDS (2–5), Mumps (4–7) and Measles (12–18).

With measles having such a high rate of contagion, that means that the vaccination rate needs to be above 95 percent to protect our vulnerable students. Measles was officially eradicated in the United States, but it is now back with a vengeance as the vaccination rate of children in some regions dropped well below 95 percent. And measles can be deadly. Now young science-illiterate legislators want to weaken the ability of schools to keep their students safe by implementing laws that prevent K-12 schools from checking the rationale of parents who want their child excluded from vaccination for non-medical reasons. Some want to deny universities the right to require meningitis or other vaccinations.

If you are older than 75, you remember the ravages of whooping cough, the deaths from German measles, the children on crutches and adults in iron lungs from polio. You saw your children and grandchildren live far better lives because of a half century of vaccination. But the widespread efforts of younger state legislators today to reduce vaccination exceeds the ignorance of the Taliban. If we are to save our great-grandchildren’s generation, some young legislators need a “talking to.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

On April 3, 1973, the first handheld portable telephone was demonstrated for reporters on a New York City street corner as Motorola executive Martin Cooper called Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs.

In 1865, Union forces occupied the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.

In 1882, outlaw Jesse James was shot to death in St. Joseph, Missouri, by Robert Ford, a member of James' gang.

In 1936, Bruno Hauptmann was electrocuted in Trenton, New Jersey, for the kidnap-murder of 20-month-old Charles Lindbergh Jr.

In 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces began their final assault on Bataan against American and Filipino troops who surrendered six days later; the capitulation was followed by the notorious Bataan Death March.

In 1944, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Smith v. Allwright, struck down a Democratic Party of Texas rule that allowed only white voters to participate in Democratic primaries.

Oscar-winning screenwriter and award-winning novelist Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, 85, died in New York.

Five years ago: A woman opened fire with a handgun in a courtyard at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, wounding three people before fatally shooting herself; family members said she was upset with the company's handling of her videos and believed she was being deprived of income and views. President Donald Trump said he wanted to use the military to secure the U.S.-Mexico border until his promised border wall was built.

One year ago: Ukrainian authorities found bodies with bound hands, close-range gunshot wounds and signs of torture scattered in a city on the outskirts of Kyiv after the withdrawal of Russian troops. They said that to that point they had found the bodies of 410 civilians in Kyiv-area towns that resembled "a scene from a horror movie." In Sacramento, California, six people were killed and 10 injured in a shootout as bars and nightclubs were closing in the city's downtown. At the Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, Jon Batiste won album of the year for "We Are," Silk Sonic won record and song of the year for "Leave the Door Open," and Olivia Rodrigo won best new artist.

Housing, bonds, and Phase 1 of the Smoky Hill River Greenway Trail construction are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Commissioners are scheduled for a special meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday to discuss Salina housing proposals. It is a continuation of the commission's special meeting last Wednesday.

On Wednesday, commissioners heard proposals from four housing developers as a part of the city's efforts to increase housing availability in Salina. 

The Salina Market Rate Apartments project "relates to entering in to an agreement with a developer to construct 500 market rate apartment units and the provision of $25M of incentives secured from the State of Kansas, $1M of City funds dedicated for this particular purpose, possible $1M of County funds if the project is located in an eligible Low to Moderate Income census tract as well as the used of Industrial Revenue Bond financing to afford the project property tax and sales tax exemption," according to information in the commission meeting packet.

After Wednesday's presentations and commission deliberation, city staff was directed to compile comparative information for commissioners to continue their deliberations Monday.

The Salina City Commission's regular meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Items on the regular meeting agenda include the following, according to the commission meeting packet information.

●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance unconditionally approving the issuance of General Obligation Bonds by the Salina Airport Authority for the purpose of financing the cost of capital improvements at the Salina Regional Airport and the Airport Industrial Center.

●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance establishing a Turf Maintenance and Replacement Fund and authorize staff to make a $75,000 contribution to the fund in 2023.

●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance (repealing and replacing Ordinance No. 22-11139) that would amend the PC-2 (Planned Neighborhood Shopping) district boundary and approve an amended site development plan for the former Town &amp; Country Veterinary Clinic property at 1001 Schippel Drive.

●Consider awarding a bid for the Smoky Hill River Greenway Trail Construction Phase 1 in the amount of $270,889.19 with a five-percent ($13,544.46) construction contingency and consider authorizing the city manager to execute a contract with Ponton Construction, Inc.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution authorizing a 100 percent sales tax exemption on construction materials for Project Lee Lofts - Phase II.

Those who attend the in-person meeting will have the opportunity to speak at the podium.Citizens can also send written comments or questions to City Commissioners by visiting the City of Salina’s website at<a href="http://www.salina-ks.gov/">&nbsp;www.salina-ks.gov</a>&nbsp;and using the “Email City Commission” icon on the home page.In order for the commissioners to have an opportunity to review comments in advance of the meeting, please email your comments or questions by 5 p.m. the Sunday prior to the Monday meetings<h2>Special meeting</h2>Commissioners are scheduled for a special meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday to discuss Salina housing proposals. It is a continuation of the commission's special meeting last Wednesday.On Wednesday, commissioners heard proposals from four housing developers as a part of the city's efforts to increase housing availability in Salina. The Salina Market Rate Apartments project "relates to entering in to an agreement with a developer to construct 500 market rate apartment units and the provision of $25M of incentives secured from the State of Kansas, $1M of City funds dedicated for this particular purpose, possible $1M of County funds if the project is located in an eligible Low to Moderate Income census tract as well as the used of Industrial Revenue Bond financing to afford the project property tax and sales tax exemption," according to information in the commission meeting packet.After Wednesday's presentations and commission deliberation, city staff was directed to compile comparative information for commissioners to continue their deliberations Monday.<h2>Regular meeting</h2>The Salina City Commission's regular meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Items on the regular meeting agenda include the following, according to the commission meeting packet information.●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance unconditionally approving the issuance of General Obligation Bonds by the Salina Airport Authority for the purpose of financing the cost of capital improvements at the Salina Regional Airport and the Airport Industrial Center.●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance establishing a Turf Maintenance and Replacement Fund and authorize staff to make a $75,000 contribution to the fund in 2023.●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance (repealing and replacing Ordinance No. 22-11139) that would amend the PC-2 (Planned Neighborhood Shopping) district boundary and approve an amended site development plan for the former Town &amp; Country Veterinary Clinic property at 1001 Schippel Drive.●Consider awarding a bid for the Smoky Hill River Greenway Trail Construction Phase 1 in the amount of $270,889.19 with a five-percent ($13,544.46) construction contingency and consider authorizing the city manager to execute a contract with Ponton Construction, Inc.●Consider approving a proposed resolution authorizing a 100 percent sales tax exemption on construction materials for Project Lee Lofts - Phase II.<a href="http://weblink.salina.org/WebLink/Browse.aspx?id=506407&amp;dbid=0&amp;repo=Salina">To view the full Salina City Commission meeting packet for Monday, click here.</a>

Housing, bonds, trail construction among Salina City Commission agenda items

Salina USD 305 has scheduled a Mini Job Fair for Friday.

Attendees will have a chance to speak with supervisors and understand how their skills may transfer to a variety of school openings. The Mini Job Fair will be held Friday from 11 a.m.–1 p.m., at the Operations Center, 1835 S. Broadway.

“The Mini Job Fair is a chance to have a one-on-one conversation with someone who can answer your questions about working at SPS and talk over our current openings,” said Tiffany Snyder, director of recruitment and retention. “We have jobs that are part and full-time, as well as seasonal and year round in a variety of positions.” 

Food service and maintenance and operations supervisors will be available to talk with attendees and answer questions.
