Imagine you just graduated from college and you have saved up enough money to travel before settling into your career and then, tragedy strikes. That is only part of story for 10-time world record breaking explorer, Colin O'Brady.&nbsp;

O'Brady's personal story of recovery, resiliency and the tenacious spirit of never giving up were the subject of his speech at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Raised in Portland, Ore., O'Brady spent his childhood exploring the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Colin said he was an active kid and excelled at sports. Ultimately, he was recruited to swim at Yale University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics in 2006.

The resources to travel internationally weren’t there growing up, so O'Brady painted houses to earn money. After college graduation and before settling into his career, he took his backpack and surfboard and set out on what would be his first "expedition."

While visiting Thailand in 2008, O'Brady&nbsp;suffered a tragic accident and was severely burned in a fire; his injuries covered nearly 25 percent of his body, primarily damaging his legs and feet. Doctor’s warned him he might never walk again normally.

"It's strange to say, it was one of the worst things ever happened to me,&nbsp; but the resiliency that my mother instilled in me through the recovery of that actually made me stronger," O'Brady said. "We've heard it said before, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and that's been a huge key to success for me, as well as not just working out physically with the muscles, but taking my mind to the mental gym."&nbsp;

For O'Brady, taking himself to the mental gym, consists of meditation practices in order to flex his "mental muscle."

After 18-months of extensive rehabilitation following his accident, O'Brady made headlines when he not only completed his first triathlon at the Chicago Triathlon, be he also placed first overall.&nbsp;

O'Brady's triathlon success did not go unnoticed. Soon after the race, sponsors began supporting his races and O'Brady soon became a professional triathlete. He has raced in 25 countries on six continents, representing the United States in multiple international triathlon competitions.

After six years of training and participating in triathlons, O'Brady, in collaboration with his then fiancée, now wife, Jenna, decided he would take on the formidable challenge of completing the Explorers Grand Slam - in world record time.&nbsp;

The Explorers Grand Slam&nbsp;or&nbsp;Adventurers Grand Slam&nbsp;is an adventurers challenge to reach the&nbsp;North Pole, the&nbsp;South Pole&nbsp;and seven of eight summits of:

● Everest (Nepal) ● Aconcagua (Argentina) ● Denali (USA) ● Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) ● Elbrus (Russia) ● Vinson (Antarctica) ● Jaya (Indonesia) ● Kosciuszko (Australia)

In 2016, after saving funds for 18 months, O'Brady finally was able to attempt to summit Mt. Everest.&nbsp;

"So many stories from that, but it didn't go perfectly right," O'Brady said. "I went up and got up to Camp Four, which the last camp before the summit, which is also known as the death zone. The human body can't survive up there for very long, even with supplemental oxygen, and I got caught in a massive storm."

O'Brady said surviving in those conditions was one of the scariest nights of his entire life.&nbsp;

"Instead of going up towards the summit, I was lucky, I had to actually come climb down the mountain and retreat. And most people thought that was the end for me, and that was the end of that expedition," O'Bryan said.&nbsp;

Most people would be proven wrong. Less than a few days following his failed attempt, O'Bryan summoned enough courage to take advantage of the last good weather window on Mt. Everest. On his second attempt, O'Bryan achieved his lifelong dream.

On May 27, 2016, the world record project came to a victorious end. O'Brady conquered The Explorers Grand Slam in a world record shattering 139 days.

 Fewer than 50 people have ever completed this staggering achievement, and only four in under a year. With grit and perseverance, Colin became the fastest person to complete the mountaineering challenge, and in the process also broke the speed record for The Seven Summits in 132 days.

"Everest is, of course, the tallest mountain in the world, something I dreamed of climbing since I was a little kid," O'Brady said. "I never knew how I was going to be able to get over there and train for it or even afford but kind of kept that dream alive for many decades of my life."

O'Brady's determined attitude and desire to achieve the impossible, didn't just cease after climbing Everest. In 2017, after talks with his wife and family, O'Brady&nbsp; began training for an expedition that many viewed as impossible; the world-first solo crossing of Antarctica.&nbsp;

Knowing that it would be the most challenging physical and mental effort of his life, Colin enlisted the help of polar experts, physical trainers, and nutrition specialists.&nbsp;

On Nov. 3, 2018, on the shoulders of polar giants like Scott, Shackleton, and Ousland, O'Brady set off from the western edge of Antarctica. 

He didn't have anyone coming to give him supplies, he didn't use a dog sled or kites, and he was completely alone. 

Each mile, O'Brady pulled his 300 pound sled, battling excruciating windchills as low as -80 degrees, paralyzing whiteouts, and extremely high winds. 

After a historic 54 grueling days walking over 930 miles, on Dec. 26, 2018, O'Brady completed the world's first solo, unsupported, and completely human powered crossing of Antarctica.

Flash forward five years later, in 2021, O'Brady had the opportunity to go back to Nepal with his wife, who after seeing him climb Everest, set the goal for herself to climb Mount Everest. 

On June 1, 2021, they summited Mount Everest together, making them the fourth married couple to ever stay on the summit together. 

"It wasn't a world record, like some of the other climbs, but I would say it's probably the most 'peak' experience of all my adventures," O'Bryan said.&nbsp;

After O'Brady accomplished the impossible, The New York Times reported that O'Brady's most recent expedition “joined some of the most remarkable achievements in polar history.”

His expedition caught fire and garnered over two billion earned media impressions worldwide. During the expedition, tens of thousands of school children engaged with Colin’s expeditions via curriculum developed by his non-profit, <a href="https://www.colinobrady.com/beyond72">Beyond7/2</a>, which, according to his website,&nbsp; "aims to inspire kids and their communities to live active, healthy lives and pursue their biggest dreams."

&nbsp;"I hope people remember that, you are the story that you tell yourself. So make sure you're telling yourself that positive story, that uplifting story, because it all starts in your mind so you can achieve anything you set your mind to."

O'Brady said that he felt humbled to be invited to speak in front of a group of esteemed business professionals.&nbsp;

"I know there's so many different businesses and people from different backgrounds here in Salina, but I always believe that we all have a goal inside of us," O'Brady said. "I joke around and say, maybe not everyone wants to go freeze their butt off in the middle of nowhere by themselves like I did an Antarctic- that's not for everyone. But, I believe that we all have a masterpiece inside of us. "

O'Brady said one concept he likes to leave audience thinking about is-"What's your Everest? What's your burning desire? What's your goal that feels a little bit out of reach?"&nbsp;

He said one of the most important aspects of reaching the summit of your goals is to ensure you have community.&nbsp;

"I read an <a href="https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/the-happiness-lab-with-dr-laurie-santos">article</a> by a Yale professor, Dr. Laurie Santos, who's done all this research on happiness, and basically, the number one thing of all things is community, at the end of the day, in terms of happiness, fulfillment, and even physical health, mental health, etc., really derives down to our personal relationships," O'Brady said. "It's not necessarily being close in proximity to people, but it's actually having the fabric of the community."

O'Brady said he really enjoyed talking with Renee Duxler, new CEO and president of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, because he could tell how much she loves the City of Salina.&nbsp;

"She loves Salina, because it feels like the deep connection to community,&nbsp; you know your neighbors, you know the folks that you go to school with,&nbsp; you know the person down the street," O'Brady said.&nbsp; "You know people are there to help you out, and I think that really makes all the difference."

The annual membership meeting included a brief review of the chamber's accomplishments in 2022, followed by remarks by outgoing Board Chair Travis Young, Vortex Global, and newly installed Board Chair Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina.

The Kansas Supreme Court is scheduled to hear two cases during a special session in Concordia on Tuesday evening.

The court session is scheduled for&nbsp; 6:30 p.m. to about 8 p.m. Tuesday in Concordia High School. The court will greet the public in an informal reception following oral arguments.

Cases to be heard during the special session are briefly summarized below. Sedgwick County: (Petition for Review) Stroud appeals the trial court’s order granting Ozark National Life Insurance Co. and Guinn’s summary judgment motion, resulting in the dismissal of her breach of fiduciary duty, negligent misrepresentation, and vicarious liability claims. Stroud contends Guinn, her deceased husband’s former insurance agent, violated his fiduciary duty to her husband and her when advising about converting her husband’s term life insurance into whole life insurance. She also challenges the trial court’s ruling that she was not the real party in interest under K.S.A. 2020 Supp. 60-217(a)(l) to bring her claims. For these reasons, she argued the trial court erred by dismissing her vicarious liability claim.&nbsp; Issues on review concern whether the Court of Appeals erred when it affirmed the trial court's dismissal of Stroud's claims.&nbsp;

Appeal No. 123,559:State of Kansas v. Frank Raymond Crudo Geary County: (Petition for Review) A jury convicted Crudo of multiple drug charges after a traffic stop and a subsequent search of his pickup truck and attached fifth-wheel camper. The district court granted Crudo’s motion for a dispositional departure and sentenced him to 36 months’ probation with an underlying 108-month prison term.&nbsp;

Issues on review are whether: 1) the Court of Appeals improperly allowed the probable cause tied to the pickup to be the basis for searching the camper; 2) Lieutenant Ricard gave expert testimony concerning the drug trade and he was required to be disclosed under K.S.A. 22-3212(b)(l); 3) the improper inference instruction reduced the burden on the State to prove its case and is not harmless; 4) there was unity of conduct barring the State from bringing multiple charges against Crudo and retrying him after a conviction for simple possession at the first trial; and 5) cumulative error denied Crudo a fair trial.&nbsp;

Kansas Supreme Court special session Tuesday in Concordia

Salina Presbyterian Manor has announced the winners of its Art is Ageless® juried competition.

The winners were honored during a recent reception.

“We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Cathy Boos, marketing director. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of artists age 65 and older. Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”

Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other  Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America® (PMMA) senior living communities to be judged at the masterpiece level. Winning entries at the masterpiece level are selected for publication in PMMA’s annual Art is Ageless calendar and note cards.

Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America® (PMMA) senior living communities to be judged at the masterpiece level. Winning entries at the masterpiece level are selected for publication in PMMA’s annual Art is Ageless calendar and note cards.<figure>

Winners of local Art is Ageless® competition announced

Salina Coin Club's Coin & Stamp Show set for April 15

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors announced Tuesday the selection of Renee Duxler as the chamber’s new president and chief executive officer.

Duxler, who has served as the chamber’s director of economic and workforce development since August 2020, will succeed president and CEO Eric Brown, who announced his resignation earlier this year after serving 11 years with the chamber. Duxler is the first woman hired for the position in the organization’s history.

In a statement, board members said they believe Duxler’s extensive experience leading teams, marketing campaigns and fundraising efforts will help elevate the chamber’s relevancy and value in the Salina region.

“The search committee was impressed with the quality of relationships and support Ms. Duxler has built in the Salina business community since she arrived in Salina two years ago,” said Alysia Starkey, chair of the Salina Chamber of Commerce board of directors. “Renee's direct impact on the workforce development efforts in this short time, particularly at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, speaks for itself. She is still new to this community and brings a fresh perspective and creativity to the role that lends itself well to the needs expressed by the chamber’s members. After a nationwide search, it was clear that we had our next president right here in Salina.”

Duxler received her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University and earned a master of social work degree from Newman University. She was executive director of the Douglas Design District in Wichita prior to moving to Salina and joining the chamber. While in Wichita, Duxler also served on the Wichita/Sedgwick County Metropolitan Planning Commission and owned a designer resale clothing store for several years. Duxler most recently has received an Inclusive Economic Growth Fellowship in 2021 from the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives and is currently participating in a Business Leads Fellowship from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

“The chamber has really taken the lead in community marketing and workforce efforts for Salina and the region over the last few years, and I’m honored to continue to lead these initiatives and conversations,” Duxler said. “Salina has the quality-of-life and robust arts and cultural scene to rival much larger metropolitan areas. As we look to retain and recruit talent in ways that we never have before, our priorities include housing, childcare, small business growth, entrepreneurial infrastructure and overall community health.”

With Easter coming up Sunday, several local organizations have scheduled Easter egg hunts for later in the week.

K-State Salina Purple Egg Hunt and Pancake Feed Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. 2310 Centennial Road

The family-friendly day kicks off with a pancake feed hosted by the K-State Flight Team at 8 a.m. in the Studen Life Center. There is no cost for the pancake feed, but donations are welcome. 

During the morning, a K-State bunny will be available for photos. Festivities continue with more than 2,000 eggs filled with candy and prizes for the hunt beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the UAS Pavillion (look for the large black nets in the middle of campus.) The egg hunt will also feature one golden egg with a special prize for each age category. There is no cost to participate.

Signs will be up around the campus to help visitors find the locations, according to information from K-State Salina.

Salina Parks &amp; Recreation annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. 841 Markley Road

The Salina Parks &amp; Recreation Department is teaming up with the Salina Optimist to host this free event. It is open to children ages 1 to 10! It will be held on Saturday on Field No. 1 of the Berkley Family Recreational Area, 841 Markley Road. The first hunt will begin promptly at 10 a.m. so be there early! The schedule is as follows.

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher I don’t know about you, but spring is here and I am ready for it. After a cold winter, there is nothing better than the sun on your face&nbsp;that first warm spring day. That same sunshine brings new growth, and we can see our pastures greening up. At first, the blades of grass barely poke through the ground, but soon with a little bit of sunshine and (hopefully) some water the grass grows at an amazing rate. The growth is incredible and what I find more fascinating is it happens year after year. Fall and winter comes and the top growth dies off only to come back as new growth the next year. Why? The secret is in the roots, the grassroots. Just like the prairie, Kansas Farm Bureau relies on grassroots to make our organization strong and resilient. They are the source of everything that happens even though they may not always be very visible. Our grassroots are what anchor us in the ground and give the organization a strong footing. Our grassroots run deep; they have been growing for over a century. Without our counties anchoring and supporting, the rest of the organization would not exist. Our deep roots and wide network are also what make us survive. When things are tough, we cover enough ground to help us to receive what we need to keep going. Just like grassroots bring in water and nutrients, our counties supply the organization with new ideas, hard work and volunteers. In turn, the leaves provide the plant with energy. The Kansas Farm Bureau provides advocacy, support and education back to the counties. Those grassroots are what makes Farm Bureau such a great organization. It is the fact that each county has its own, autonomous association, then each state is its own entity and the American Farm Bureau Federation exists not because of the states but the counties in each state. Just like the grass plant, nothing else would exist without the county level organizations. All policy and decisions ultimately are made at the county level. Every leader started out as a member in their home county. Every policy in our state and national policy book started out as an idea at the county level and worked its way through the system. The most effective education, advocacy and community service all happen at the county level. That is why we can represent farmers and ranchers of all types of no matter how big or small their farms or ranches are. The depth and breadth of our roots is what makes us different from every other agricultural organization and we should be very proud of that. Yes, everyone sees the green grass growing above ground but that green grass exists because of its roots, and I don’t know about you but I am awfully proud of my grassroots.

Ten years ago: Kansas legislators gave final passage to a sweeping anti-abortion measure declaring that life began "at fertilization." (Kansas Gov. A federal judge in New York ordered the Food and Drug Administration to lift age restrictions on the sale of emergency contraception, ending a requirement that buyers show proof they were 17 or older if they wanted to buy it without a prescription. Five years ago: In his first public comments about Stormy Daniels, President Donald Trump said he didn't know about the $130,000 payment his personal attorney Michael Cohen had made to the porn actress who alleged she had an affair with Trump. In a dramatic escalation of the trade dispute with China, Trump told the U.S. trade representative to consider slapping an additional $100 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods. A Brazilian judge issued an arrest warrant for former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as the once-popular leader tried to mount a political comeback ahead of October elections; da Silva had sought to stay out of prison while he appealed a corruption conviction. A federal immigration raid took 97 people into custody at a Tennessee meat processing plant.

One year ago: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russian troops of gruesome atrocities in Ukraine and told the U.N. Security Council that those responsible should immediately be brought up on war crimes charges in front of a tribunal like the one set up at Nuremberg after World War II. KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Rodale Institute, a global research and education nonprofit, is joining forces with Kansas Wesleyan University and Quail Creek Family Farms (QCFF) to grow education programming in Kansas focused on regenerative organic farming models. 

Priorities for the organizations include developing an accredited Kansas-based Rodale Institute Farmer Training (RIFT) program, establishing a Rodale Institute Regional Resource Center in Salina and exploring potential sites for a local farm-to-institution production facility. 

“Rodale Institute is committed to expanding opportunities for the next generation of American farmers and investing in the nation’s farming communities,” said Rodale Institute CEO Jeff Moyer. “Through this joint effort, Rodale Institute, Kansas Wesleyan University and Quail Creek Family Farms will build a pipeline of farmers skilled in regenerative organic agricultural practices and establish a hub for agriculture education and innovation in Kansas.” 

“A partnership with a global leader that has a 75-year commitment to regenerative organic agriculture will enable our Community Resilience Hub to provide the highest level of research and programming available in the industry,” said Matt Thompson, president and CEO of Kansas Wesleyan. “We are honored to work alongside Rodale and thrilled to embark on a new and deeper relationship with JRI Hospitality. It is exciting to imagine what our three organizations can do to harness the health and safety of our land, food systems and community.”

The institute’s local extensions serve farmers in select geographical areas by conducting practical research on local soil and crops, providing education programming and assisting farmers with regionally significant challenges.

Temperatures will fall below freezing for portions of central and south-central Kansas Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Because of that, a freeze warning has been issued for some counties in our area for early Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a freeze warning in effect from 3-9 a.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 are expected.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
