MCPHERSON –&nbsp;A vision, 10 years in the making, has come true for students, alumni, and employees of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration program — the only four-year bachelor’s degree program for automotive restoration in the nation. The 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet, entirely restored by students, has been accepted by the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and will be shown there on Aug. 20.

“Congratulations to the McPherson College students for having their car accepted to Pebble Beach,” said comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno. Leno’s support 20 years ago was the turning point for the program when it pivoted from an associate’s to a bachelor’s degree. “I am proud to be associated with the college. Much like art historians who clean and repair the works of the renaissance era, the young men and women at McPherson College are doing it with automobiles, recreating abilities and techniques long forgotten, and they’ll make a good living doing it. Our hobby and heritage are safe in their hands.”

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the oldest Concours in the United States and one of the world’s most prestigious gatherings of rare and antique automobiles. Prized collector cars compete each year for Best of Show, the most coveted award in the automotive industry. The Concours Selection Committee spends weeks vetting each entry, narrowing its selection down to the top classic cars in the world, which are invited to show.

“We set a bold vision 10 years ago to show a car at Pebble Beach, and I was confident our students and staff could attain it,” said Amanda Gutierrez, provost and vice president of automotive restoration. “The goal was to get invited to compete at Pebble Beach, but there is a significant process that makes that happen, especially at a small college with students working outside of class hours. This project has been a valuable learning experience for our students as they study toward their bachelor’s degree in automotive restoration. It was intense work requiring exceptional commitment, and I am extremely proud of them.”&nbsp;

After an exhaustive search for the right car, work on the project began and has incorporated classroom curricula, expert guest lectures, and senior capstone experiences. The restoration was completed by teams of student interns who worked over the course of the restoration. Brian Martin, director of automotive restoration projects, supervises the student team.

“When we set out to do this, we knew it was going to be a long-term commitment,” Martin said. “It is a complete, frame-off, top-to-bottom restoration by students. We planned for it to become the cornerstone of our program and an example of the skills our students develop while they are here.”

McPherson College has a long history of student participation at Pebble Beach, dating back to 2008 when the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Pebble Beach Company Foundation established scholarships honoring Formula One World Champion and famed restorer Phil Hill. Over the years, more than 25 McPherson College students have earned college scholarships from Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach Company Foundation scholarship recipients not only attend the event and shadow the judges, they also have been part of panel discussions, prepared and presented cars for the field, and attended numerous additional events during the week. However, this August will mark the first time the college will show a classic vehicle fully restored by its students.

“It’s a remarkable accomplishment,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “Since the project began, nearly every student in the auto restoration program has been exposed to the restoration through classes, workshops, or as part of an internship team. For some of them, getting a chance to work on this project was why they decided to attend McPherson College. This achievement will positively impact our students and program for years. Managing this project was an enormous undertaking, and I commend the individuals, especially Brian Martin, who helped mentor our students through this process. Our friends at Paul Russell and Company, as well as the Mercedes Benz Classic Center, were excellent advisors on the project. I also thank Jay Leno, whose early and consistent support over the years has helped us flourish and reach Pebble Beach.”

Members of the student team, the Pebble Beach Scholars, college staff, and alumni will accompany the car to Pebble Beach in August. A recognition of their efforts will be celebrated during the CARS Club Motoring Festival on May 6 at McPherson College at 2 p.m. before the awards ceremony.

Showing a student-restored car at Pebble Beach is another example of McPherson College achieving what many consider impossible. In November, the college announced a historic $500 million matching gift. To date, the college has raised over $170 million of the $250 million needed to secure the $500 million, including generous gifts from car enthusiasts Melanie and Richard Lundquist, the Rob Walton Foundation, and Dave Kinney.

Police are investigating a hit-and-run early Thursday that damaged multiple sections of iron fencing in an east Salina neighborhood.

Someone driving northbound in the 1300 block of S. Marymount Road in what is believed to be either a red 2000-2006 Chevrolet Suburban or red 2000-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe left the roadway and damaged five seven-foot sections of fence and a pillar, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Police were able to narrow the possible suspect vehicle pool based on vehicle parts left at the scene. Forrester said the vehicle should have damage on the front and passenger sides.

No damage estimate to the fence was available.

Hit-and-run driver damages sections of fence in east Salina

Rural firefighters responded to two controlled burns that got out of control within a matter of minutes of each other Thursday afternoon.

Deputies and personnel from Rural Fire District No. 2 were sent to the 400 block of E. Water Well Road at approximately 3:41 p.m. Thursday after a control burn reignited, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. A 53-year-old Saline County man who had a burn permit had burned a pile of brush and thought he had put everything out afterward.

After the man left the property, the fire rekindled, setting some nearby grass on fire, Melander said. The fire spread to two wood piles, destroying them. The reignited fire was reported by neighbors.

Melander said that although the fire came close, no buildings were damaged. There was no damage estimate provided for the fire.

At 3:58 p.m. Thursday, a 45-year-old man who was conducting a controlled burn on some grass in the 9500 block of Forsse Road south of Falun called for help after the wind shifted, blowing embers onto a nearby wooden barn. Although the man had a water hose on hand, the water stream did not reach the top of the barn, Melander said.

Personnel from Rural Fire District No. 6 responded to the blaze and requested assistance from Rural Fire District No. 2 and the Marquette Fire Department. By the time they arrived, the fire had spread to a stubble field. The fire was extinguished, but not before the barn was destroyed and 100 yards of stubble had burned, Melander said. Additionally, a nearby Ford F150 had some fire damage.

Loss of the barn, which had some miscellaneous tools inside, was estimated at $15,000.

Two legitimately set fires get out of control Thursday in Saline County

Beginning Monday, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing a section of pavement that is cracked and settled in the northbound lane on the north side of the N. Broadway Boulevard overpass.

The roadway will remain open but traffic will be slowed down and detoured around the construction. We encourage motorists to use caution when traveling in the active work area.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within three to five days.

SOLOMON - A minor earthquake shook part of western Dickinson County late Thursday night.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.5 magnitude quake struck at 11:16 p.m. Thursday a little more than a mile south-southeast of Solomon.

I’m thinking more seriously about buying a home in the next year or so. It seems like the housing market has cooled off a bit, so I am also planning to get a secured credit card to help me rebuild my credit score in the meantime. I make $60,000 a year, and I have about $15,000 in debt and $3,100 in savings. Is this a good idea and a good start toward getting my credit back on track and taking control of my finances?

In a word, no. I want you to become debt-free before you buy a home. I also want you to have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses set aside,&nbsp;and&nbsp;have a down payment—preferably of at least 20%, so you can avoid having to pay private mortgage insurance—before buying a home.

Let me tell you a couple of things. Number one, your income is your most powerful&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/how-to-build-wealth" target="_blank">wealth building</a>&nbsp;tool. If you don’t have any payments, you have the ability to build wealth and be generous. When you have debt, all you do is send money out the door to make payments. So, being in debt is a guaranteed way to stay broke. That means getting a secured credit card is not a good idea, either.&nbsp;

Also, did you know you can get a home mortgage with no credit score through a process called manual underwriting? All you have to do is make sure you have a good, long history of paying other things, like your utilities and rent, on time. Most mortgage lenders who do manual underwriting would also require that you have all your debts paid off completely and the accounts closed for at least six months.

Buying a house when you’re in debt and broke is a really bad idea, Martin. It’s the fastest way I know to turn something that should be a blessing into a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/financial-literacy/what-is-financial-literacy" target="_blank">financial</a>&nbsp;and emotional curse. Just be patient, get out of debt and save up. Getting control of your finances is the smartest thing you can do before buying a home!

Now, she’s back in her home county and leading Abilene’s convention visitors office, a task abetted by the presence of a presidential library. HAYS –&nbsp;“TransFortified,” an entrepreneurial business plan created by PJ Stauffer, won first place at the 2023 Faulkner Challenge for a Better Future at Fort Hays State University.

Stauffer, a senior drawing major and graduate of Beloit High School, received a $6,000 first-place cash award for his presentation. Stauffer’s business is a non-profit website with resources for transgender Americans looking for information in multiple facets, including name changes, navigating medical transition, peer support, historical and scientific accuracy, self-advocacy, and connecting to local resources.

“I don’t want others to go through the turmoil that I went through,” Stauffer, who was born female but now identifies as male, said in his presentation to the judges at Saturday’s event. “Nowadays, it is more difficult to get access to resources because the laws are changing all the time.”

Stauffer said that winning the competition was unexpected. He often struggles with discussing the status of his gender identity with others and found that the encouragement of his professors and peers played a key role in his moving forward with the project.

“I plan to help people who are going through the same thing as me see that it is actually worth it,” he said. “Good things happen. Keep trying. You literally never know what’s going to happen.”

The Faulkner Challenge is a business plan competition designed to develop entrepreneurial imagination and innovation in university students, regardless of major or interests. It is open to any new venture in the conceptual, seed, or startup stages and to students from any community college or university in Kansas. Teams are evaluated on their ability to clearly identify a market opportunity, value proposition, and sustainable competitive advantage.

While all entries are welcome, of special interest are proposals for innovations in or design of products, processes, systems, services, or businesses that are economically sustainable, with promise for social and or environmental benefit.

FHSU alum Kevin Faulkner established an endowed fund for the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship business plan challenge that now bears his name. He supports the challenge in many ways, including serving as a judge for the competition.

Faulkner, who joined Saturday’s finals competition online, offered his help and guidance to all three teams competing.

“These are three outstanding ideas, and I think you presented them very well,” he said. “I hope you continue to move forward with them.”

The second-place $3,000 prize went to Salma Beauty, a sustainable makeup startup that draws inspiration from the beauty of Morocco. Team members: Fiorella Mendez, Paraguay; Diana Angarita, San Felipe, Venezuela; Bass Fall, Dakar, Senegal; and Mohamed Didi, Dakar, Senegal.

Winning the $1,000 third-place award was Innovia Construction, LLC 3D printed homes – building sustainable, high-quality homes for an affordable price. Team members: Max Weimer, McCook, Neb.; Caitlin Leiker, Hays; Tanner Miller, Spearville; and Alicia Feyerherm, Hays.

Competition for the 2023 award was “razor thin,” said Dr. Rick Edgeman, director of FHSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship and organizer of the challenge.

“It was an incredibly challenging discussion and decision. Whether you walk away with 3rd, 2nd, or 1st, you are all winners. You all did amazing jobs.”

Edgeman said all the competitors have a legitimate chance to move forward with their business plans to make a significant impact on the world.

“That’s what this competition was about,” he said. “Doing things that matter. We feel that every one of your ideas is something that makes a difference.”

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Silver Key Sophomore Honorary recently inducted 43 new members into the 2023-2024 cohort. Silver Key members take part in a variety of community service projects throughout the semester. Past projects have included hosting children from the Boys and Girls Club at K-State Athletics events; partnering with the K-State Recycling Center; writing cards and making quilts for a local veterans' center; collecting donations for the Manhattan Emergency Shelter; highway and neighborhood cleanup efforts; and afternoon visits to Stoneybrook and Meadowlark, senior living communities in Manhattan. To be eligible for Silver Key, students must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average. On Monday,&nbsp; the Kansas Department of Transportation will resume resurfacing work on Interstate 135 in Saline County.

Construction crews will be finishing work on the southbound lanes of I-135 as well as completing the final 12 miles of northbound I-135 between the McPherson/Saline County line and the Interstate 70/I-135 junction, beginning with the I-70 ramps and working from W. Schilling Road north to I-70.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one 16-foot lane at a reduced speed through the work zone. Drivers should expect minimal delays, not exceeding five minutes.&nbsp;

APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $17 million project to now be completed in June 2023, weather permitting.

Resurfacing on I-135 in Saline County to resume Monday

For the past several years Kansas families have suffered from a systemic lack of childcare.

Access to childcare is a problem in both urban and rural areas. 104 of the state’s 105 counties have a higher demand for childcare than availability.

According to Child Care Aware of Kansas, the state has a shortage of approximately 85,000 childcare slots to meet existing demand.

The supply and demand issue raises childcare costs and prices many parents — mostly mothers — out of the workforce.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, childcare is affordable if it costs no more than 7% of a family’s income.

However, in Kansas about 29% of a working mother’s salary is spent on childcare costs alone, making Kansas childcare costs as a percentage of salary one of the highest in the country.

Furthermore, infant care costs in our state exceed the expense of full-time college tuition at a public university, and childcare costs for kids under the age of four are about equal to full-time public university tuition costs.

Last month the state senate passed a bill with a proposed “solution” to the childcare crisis. However, the bill essentially just puts a bandaid — and not a very good one — on a firehose.

Currently, Kansas has strict regulations for training, furthering education, licensing, and adult-to-child ratios in the childcare field.

These requirements were put in place to ensure child safety. In 2010, the state legislature passed a law requiring all childcare facilities to be licensed and gave the Kansas Department of Health and Environment the authority to create regulations and requirements for childcare facilities.

Should the senate bill pass the state house and become law, it would significantly decrease current regulations.

Experts are concerned that such a law would move Kansas away from national standards and best practices. Additionally, the current proposal’s lax policies on continuing education would put many Kansas childcare providers out of compliance with existing requirements to receive federal funding. Should that happen, it could create a scenario where the state has even fewer childcare options than we have right now.

The bill would also increase the workload by allowing an additional child per adult without solving the problem that has led to the worker shortage in the first place — exceptionally low wages.

According to the US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, childcare is one of the lowest paying occupations in the country, oftentimes making only minimum wage.

Last year, the state legislature signed a childcare tax credit that incentivizes businesses to provide childcare services at their place of employment. That tax credit also did not solve the ongoing childcare crisis.

Critics of the bill highlight that it was rushed through the Senate without input from childcare providers or child development experts. It shows.

The crux of the matter is that until wages increase there will continue to be a massive childcare shortage.

Rather than passing stop gaps and false solutions, the state needs to incentivize providers to raise wages for their workers without parents having to bear the burden.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Childcare crisis - enough with the stop gaps, raise wages

Police are looking for a man who allegedly punched and kicked a CityGo bus in west-central Salina Wednesday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a CityGo driver was dropping people off in the 1200 block of W. Crawford Street on Wednesday. One passenger was reported to have been having a disagreement with the driver while getting off the bus. When the driver tried to shut the door, the man allegedly punched the door and then kicked it, causing the glass to shatter.

The man was described as wearing a red beanie, a black cutoff shirt, black pants, and a black backpack, Forrester said.

Damage to the door was estimated at $800.

The 2023 Live First Friday Concert Series kicks off this Friday at the City Lights Stage in downtown Salina.

The Llew Brown Band is scheduled to perform from 6-8 p.m. Friday on the City Lights Stage, which is located at the corner of N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street.

"I am so excited to have live entertainment back in Downtown Salina and to welcome everyone back to City Lights Stage! We are thrilled to have all new bands for our First Friday concert series this year and we listened to our community," Leslie Bishop, executive director of Salina Downtown Inc. told Salina Post. "We are starting our concerts later – April and May, the concerts will be from 6-8 p.m. and June, July, August, September the concerts will be from 7-9. It is time to be together again!"

Before the band begins its performance, Salina Downtown Inc. will draw the names of the winners of its Downtown Dough, which began in mid-January and ended March 31. Bishop explained that for every $50 people spent in participating downtown stores and businesses during that time period, they were able to enter the Downtown Dough drawing. Downtown Dough prizes include the following.

First Prize: $800 in downtown gift cards

Second Prize: $500 in downtown gift cards

Third Prize: $250 in downtown gift cards

Downtown First Friday concerts begin again this week; art show, too

The Equity Council, made up of community members and staff, is accepting applications for at-large positions. Interested community members are encouraged to apply before the deadline of May 8, 2023.

Formed in the spring of 2018, the Equity Council is a collaborative group focused on leading and facilitating efforts to provide students and staff with equitable experiences in Salina USD 305.

The membership application reopens in order to fill any vacancies. Council membership includes:

●Four representatives to include the Board of Education and District Administration

A Salina man returned home late Wednesday afternoon to find that someone had swapped two pieces of PVC pipe for approximately $3,500 of his property.

Officers were sent to the 300 block of N. Kansas Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a residential burglary, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. A 40-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., while he was away, someone broke into his residence and stole the following items.

The man told police that when he got home, he noticed items on his front porch that did not belong to him, Forrester said. As the man was entering the front door, he found two pieces of PVC pipe that did not belong to him

Thief swaps PVC pipe for Salina resident's property

UPDATE Thursday 10:15 a.m.: The Salina Police Department this morning provided additional information about the children who were living in the south Salina residence where more than 5,000 pills suspected to contain fentanyl, weapons, and more than a half ounce of methamphetamine were seized Tuesday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 15-year-old boy, a 14-year-old&nbsp; girl, and a four-year-old girl were placed into protective custody with other family members.

Forrester also said that the six charges&nbsp;of aggravated endangering a child that were requested for both&nbsp;Gregory James Walburn and&nbsp;Chelsea Renae Walburn were divided into two categories. Three were requested for the condition of the residence in which the children were living and three were requested for the presence of illegal drugs in the residence, Forrester explained.&nbsp;

More than 5,000 pills suspected to contain fentanyl, weapons, and more than a half ounce of methamphetamine were among the items seized when a search warrant was served at a south Salina residence Tuesday.

In a release issued this afternoon, the Salina Police Department reported that its SWAT Team, department detectives, and Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents served a search warrant at 827 Mike Drive "regarding a drug investigation involving the distribution of fentanyl pills."

Among the items seized during the search were the following.

●More than a half ounce of suspected methamphetamine

"The pills are commonly recognized to be counterfeit oxycodone pills containing suspected fentanyl," the Salina Police Department noted in the news release.

At the conclusion of the search, the following people were arrested on a number of requested charges.
