Building on the success of its inaugural run last November, the Salina Crossroads Marathon already has more than 1,300 runners registered for its upcoming Nov. 4 event.

"We are excited to be the first race in Salina to ever have 1000 registered runners," said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig. We are especially excited to have over 600 runners from outside of Kansas which is a big increase from the 134 we had last year. We currently have runners from 41 states including 230 from the state of Oklahoma. With over 1,300 runners currently registered we have a good chance of having over 2,000 registered runners by race day."

Craid said that last year, the organization created a list of more than 600 running clubs in all 50 states.

"We have been working hard to develop relationships with them in hopes that some of them will send runners to the Salina Crossroads Marathon every year. That strategy seems to have been very successful and will be key to reaching our goal of becoming one of the premier running events in the Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Nebraska region," he said.

The 2022 event had 817 registered runners from 30 states. Visit Salina, a division of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, estimated that the event had a local economic impact of $446,296. Additionally, $25,340 was donated to youth sports in Saline County.

"Last year our volunteers and race committee did an amazing job putting on a fun and well-organized race. We received a lot of great feedback on the excellent pre-race communication, well-organized packet pickup, music and entertainment including an electric guitar performance of the National Anthem, amazing volunteers all along the course, and the custom-designed medals by Vortex Companies. We have received many great reviews on national running sites and that has really helped get the word out," Craig told Salina Post.

Craig said the Salina Crossroads Marathon planning committee is making some changes to the course, based on post-race survey comments. Those changes include reducing the number of turns and eliminating one of the out-and-backs. Craig said the new half-marathon and marathon courses will be USATF certified.

Additionally, a new children's half-mile run event is being added and the fun run/walk is being changed to a 5K event.

"There will continue to be music all through the course and a fun post-race celebration with great food," he said.

Salina Crossroads Marathon already exceeds registration goal for 2023

MANHATTAN —Kansas State University horticulture instructor Cynthia Domenghini says home gardeners can expand garden space by taking it to the next level…literally.&nbsp;

Domenghini said many crops can be grown vertically, including the more traditional tomatoes, pole beans, and peas as well as vining crops such as cucumbers, melons, squash and gourds.&nbsp;

“Elevating plants off the ground increases the air flow which can help prevent disease,” Domenghini said. “Bringing the height of the produce up also makes harvesting easier.”&nbsp;

Domenghini recommends edible-pod and snow peas because those crops have longer vines and are therefore more appropriate for growing vertically than English (shelling) peas.&nbsp;

Bush-type vining crops produce short vines and are consequently less suitable for vertical growth. 

“Be mindful of crops that grow large fruit as they could damage the vine if grown vertically,” Domenghini said.&nbsp;

Supporting your vertical garden with a study structure is also important. Domenghini suggests bamboo poles. &nbsp;

“Create a pup tent or A-frame structure by leaning two cattle panels or pallets together and securing them at the top. Alternatively, a single panel can be tied upright to T-posts for support. Plant vining crops at the base and train them to grow upward,” she said.&nbsp;

Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html" target="_blank">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. Maximize garden space by growing vertically 

UPDATE 10:38 a.m. April 12: Salina Central Theatre has updated the cast list for the show.

Salina Central High School Theatre will present a musical comedy murder mystery dinner theatre event later this month.

Killer Karaoke Cadaver, written by Bill and Debbie Weaver of Salina, will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday and April 16 in Martinelli's Little Italy, 158 S. Santa Fe Avenue. The productions are a fundraiser for Thespian Troupe 639. All proceeds will go to fund the students’ trip to the International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Ind., in June.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets are only available for presale and are on sale now. Ticket prices for the production are $30 with a $2.85 processing fee for a total of $32.85. “Nothing changes if nothing changes.”&nbsp;

That quote was cited by K-State sportswriter D. Scott Fritchen in an article about a young ballplayer who used the transfer portal and became an impact player at her new school. The young player posted that quote on her mirror to remind herself that sometimes we have to make a change if we are to better our situation.&nbsp;

Is this true for communities as well? Today we’ll meet another woman who has been a leading force for positive change in her community.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Carolyn Dunn is president of the Stafford County Port Authority and past director of economic development in Stafford County. She has seen change firsthand.&nbsp;

Dunn grew up on a farm near the rural community of Ottawa, population 12,625 people. Now, that’s rural. She studied agricultural economics at K-State and worked in Washington, D.C. before meeting and marrying Brian Dunn and moving back to his farm in Stafford County, Kansas.&nbsp;

By 2011, she was the mother of three boys and serving on the local school board. “We were talking about declining enrollments,” Dunn said. “I commented that we didn’t even have an economic development program in the county and we need one.”&nbsp;

She was also consulting on a Kansas Farm Bureau project to assist three other rural communities in the state. “I asked myself, `Why am I working on these other towns when we need this here?’”&nbsp;&nbsp;Dunn said.&nbsp;

Stafford County Farm Bureau approached the county commissioners and pledged to commit funds if the county would create a full-time economic development director position. They did so. Dunn took the job.&nbsp;

In 2019, a crisis hit the Stafford County community of St. John: Dillons closed the only grocery store in town. “The immediate thought was, we need somebody else to come in and run that (same) store,” Dunn said. The city established a committee of citizens to consider the matter.&nbsp;

“To their credit, the committee stepped back to look at the big picture,” Dunn said. More alternatives were considered. An outside consultant provided input.&nbsp;

A study concluded that rather than reopening the cramped store downtown, a new, more spacious highway location would be more successful.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, nothing changes if nothing changes.&nbsp;

Ultimately, Stafford County Economic Development built a new building near the highway and rented the space to White’s Foodliner, which operates the grocery store today. Space is also rented to Stafford County Drug, which operates a pharmacy.&nbsp;

“We needed more space to sell more things, especially those things that the consumer wants today, such as a deli,” Dunn said. Fuel pumps were also added, including ethanol pumps with support from Kansas Corn Commission.&nbsp;

“This was a $3.8 million project,” Dunn said. Talk about a heavy lift.&nbsp;

“Fourteen different sources of financing went into the project, including loans and grants,” she said. “We used a tax increment financing district so the city didn’t have to raise taxes to do this.”&nbsp;

“The president of the economic development board at the time was a 26-year-old young professional,” Dunn said. “As he was signing these two million dollar loan documents, I felt proud that he was stepping into this leadership role at such a young age.”&nbsp;

The store is doing well, but that is not the only accomplishment in Dunn’s eyes.&nbsp;

“The grocery store is important, and it could be a template for other rural communities,” she said. “The schools say you can’t recruit teachers without a store in town, for example, but I think it goes deeper than that. (Accomplishing this project) shifted our mentality. It told us that we could do bigger, harder things.”&nbsp;

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of March. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. 

A total donation of $750 was presented to the Poetry in Movement Competition Dance Team. 

The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

Memorial Health System Jeans Day raises funds for dance team

A distinguished KWU alumnus is returning to campus, as Jake Montoya ’05 has accepted the position of director of athletic and jazz bands. Montoya will take a leadership role in the Music Department’s recruiting process and will have a role in alumni engagement, as well.

“This is a home run hire for KWU’s music program,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “We believe in community, we believe in the student experience, and we believe that Kansas Wesleyan is a special, unique place that offers something other small colleges do not. Jake Montoya not only shares these feelings but is uniquely positioned to integrate them into this position.”

Montoya brings a litany of experiences to his new role, as he joins KWU after 10 years as the instrumental music director at USD 305. There, he was the director of bands and jazz bands for Lakewood Middle School and assisted with the Salina Central High School band. For his efforts, he was tabbed Secondary Teacher of the Year by the district in 2017-18.

His laurels do not end in the classroom, however. Montoya spent two years as the Salina Symphony’s Junior Symphony director and served as a musician at both Theatre Salina and the symphony for nearly five years.

“Coming back to KWU, for me, is coming home,” said Montoya. “I built roots here and hope to do that for numerous students in the years to come. In addition to his significant awards and community contributions, Montoya’s resumé is one of patience and hard work. Prior to his decade at USD 305, he spent eight years at USD 393 in Solomon, where he worked with numerous ensembles and increased the overall size of the band program exponentially. He also was the athletic and activities director for two years, which included overseeing all coaching staff and sponsorships for the district.

“Yes, Kansas Wesleyan is home, but so is this region,” said Montoya, who originally hails from Wyoming. “I have truly grown fond of Salina and the surrounding area, and there are many individuals here who helped me grow into the educator I am today. I’m excited about the opportunity to give back to them and to this wonderful community, and I look forward to building relationships that open tremendous doors for our students.”

“It’s so important to have someone committed to the community in this role,” said Oliver. “When you’re building a program, it takes both professional and community connections to create a culture that enhances the student experience. We see that idea, that philosophy, as an extension of The Power of AND. Few people better embody that philosophy than Jake Montoya.”

Montoya was an adjunct instructor at KWU for two years, teaching primarily guitar, and has taught studio lessons in Salina for nearly 20 years. While a student, he held numerous roles associated with KWU bands, including student director of pep bands, student director of bands and band manager. He was named the outstanding musician in symphonic and jazz ensembles, as well as the outstanding jazz musician, during his time as a Coyote.

“To be selected for this role is truly a gift,” Montoya concluded. “I cannot wait to add to the greatness of the KWU experience, to build a sense of togetherness, and to foster pride in our campus and in who we are as Coyotes. It’s great to be home!”

Montoya will begin his duties on a part-time basis in the coming weeks and will start full-time later this summer.

Montoya will take a leadership role in the Music Department’s recruiting process and will have a role in alumni engagement, as well.“This is a home run hire for KWU’s music program,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “We believe in community, we believe in the student experience, and we believe that Kansas Wesleyan is a special, unique place that offers something other small colleges do not. Jake Montoya not only shares these feelings but is uniquely positioned to integrate them into this position.”Montoya brings a litany of experiences to his new role, as he joins KWU after 10 years as the instrumental music director at USD 305. There, he was the director of bands and jazz bands for Lakewood Middle School and assisted with the Salina Central High School band. For his efforts, he was tabbed Secondary Teacher of the Year by the district in 2017-18.His laurels do not end in the classroom, however. <a href="https://smokyhillwinery.com/">Smoky Hill Vineyards &amp; Winery</a>&nbsp;in Salina held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday in partnership with the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

The parking lot filled up quickly as members of the community gathered from 4:30-7 p.m.&nbsp; to celebrate the opening of its new wine sipping room and patio space. The family-owned business, which was founded in 1991 by Steve Jennings and Kay Bloom, has become the largest grape-producing farm winery in the state of Kansas. The Jennings passed on the well-established craft to George Plante along with his daughter, Nicki, and her husband, Brock, in November of 2012.

Brock and Nicki, were thrilled to showcase their wide variety of wines, at the event, providing guests with a taste of wine made from grapes grown in north-central Kansas.

"As far as the wines go, we have everything from sweet wines to dry wines, kind of anything that you may want to try out," Ebert said. "We have a wine called 'Sweet Lady' that's a sweet white wine that a lot of people enjoy. We have some Chardonnays which are on the drier side. So we have a very wide variety. And anytime of the year we could be between 15 and 20 different varieties that are available."

"Not a lot of people know that we're from the Salina area. So we've redecorated, remodeled the entire inside of the building, make it more inviting," Ebert said. "People want to come out, sit at the table, the bar, or our lounge. Or they could enjoy a glass of wine outside on the patio. So we're really hoping that people can come out and enjoy the wine with us."

Salina Area Chamber President and CEO Renee Duxler said she was thankful the weather cooperated to make the event a success.

"Whenever the weather is as beautiful as this, we like to say it's 'Chamber Weather'," Duxler said."We are just so glad to be celebrating this addition to the many wonderful amenities we have in Salina."

Duxler also said that she is confident that people from all parts of the state will be interested in stopping by the sipping room and supporting a family owned, and operated business.

The ceremony also featured live music from Taylor Kline and food from the Chapman Take Away Food Truck, making it a truly enjoyable experience for all who attended.

The winery is open for tastings from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. 

There is no vineyard on-site; however, you can view the winery and tanks from the tasting room.&nbsp;

This position could be filled by a recent high school graduate or an individual with professional experience up to three years. The title/level of position will be based on the skills and experience of the candidate selected.Primary Function:&nbsp;This entry-level full-time position located in the Ellsworth, Hays or Salina, Kansas office will involve being a member of a survey crew performing boundary, topography, ALTA, right of way, and construction surveys for public and private clients. Also responsible for the operation and maintenance of survey equipment, taking field notes, data collection, performing calculations and working with staff and clients on these projects. Involvement in the office will include reducing survey data, performing calculations, copying and filing of this data. Work may include preparation of survey drawings. The Saline County Health Department Lab has received a zero deficiency report in its recent Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) inspection. This demonstrates the commitment of the lab to providing high-quality service and meeting the highest standards of laboratory testing.

"It is a testament to our commitment to providing excellent patient care and ensuring that our lab meets all of the regulatory requirements set forth by CMS," said Kim Berry, Saline County Health Department lab manager. "We are dedicated to providing our patients with safe and accurate test results so they can make informed decisions about their health care." 

The CLIA program, created by Federal Congress in 1988, sets minimum standards for laboratory testing across the United States. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulates these standards and inspects laboratories every other year to ensure compliance.

Saline Co. Health Department lab gets zero deficiency report

State Street between N. Hedville Road and N. Brookville Road will be closed beginning Monday for approximately one month.

State Street traffic will be reduced to one lane in the areas of construction during daylight hours while the contractor is working. Traffic control will be by yield sign in the work area. Travelers are asked to use patience and yield to oncoming traffic. Minimal traffic delays are expected.

Local&nbsp;and emergency traffic will be provided&nbsp;access to private property within the sections of the&nbsp;closed&nbsp;road&nbsp;at&nbsp;all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Driving around road closure barricades is not just unlawful but extremely unsafe. For your safety and the safety of the construction workers, please obey all traffic signs.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Winds from the south at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 10 percent are forecast.
