Throwback Thursday: Lagerberg Brothers Tailors

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Office of the State Fire Marshal and Safe Kids Kansas would like to share some important safety tips to ensure that all Kansans have a safe and fun Independence Day this year.

In 2022, there were a total of 102 injuries caused by fireworks in Kansas.&nbsp;The person igniting the firework was most likely to be injured,&nbsp;and the hands were the most common body part to be injured.&nbsp;Over half of the injuries that occurred from fireworks that happened on July Fourth were from burns. There was a 43 percent decrease in reported injuries from 2021.

Each age group saw a decrease except for a slight increase in 0-3 year-olds. The highest incidents of injuries were caused by mortars or artillery fireworks and other fireworks like parachutes, fountains and spinning items. “Remember that fireworks are explosives and should be handled with care,”&nbsp;Cherie Sage, director of Safe Kids Kansas,&nbsp;said. “Children should not light fireworks, including sparklers, which burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass. We encourage parents to let their little ones use glow sticks instead of sparklers and leave the rest to grownups.”

Grilling is another favorite part of many summertime gatherings. Make sure grills are used outdoors only, away from the home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away from the grill area and never leave your grill unattended. Clean your grill regularly to prevent grease fires.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe celebration on Independence Day,”&nbsp;Doug Jorgensen, state fire marshal, said. &nbsp;“Taking a few simple precautions if you’re lighting off fireworks or grilling can ensure that your family and friends are safe and injury free this fourth of July. If possible, go to a public fireworks display, and let the trained professionals handle the risks.”

Here are some tips to keep your celebrations safe:

● Have adults supervise children and pets around grills and fireworks

● Designate a child-free safety zone around grills and areas where fireworks are being lit ● Store fireworks in a cool, dry place ●&nbsp; Fireworks should only be handled by adults. Consider giving children glow sticks, which also help you see little ones after dark ●&nbsp; Have a water supply ready, such as a bucket of water or garden hose ●&nbsp; Dispose of used fireworks carefully, as they may reignite ●&nbsp; Keep a first-aid kit available and nearby ●&nbsp; Ignite fireworks outdoors on a flat surface ●&nbsp; Light only one firework at a time ●&nbsp; Never stand over fireworks when lighting or holding a firework in your hand when lighting the fuse and wear eye protection ●&nbsp; Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully ●&nbsp; Never attempt to make your own fireworks

Bottle rockets are illegal and M80 type of “fireworks” are considered explosives, and it is a felony in Kansas to possess, manufacture or use, as well as being extremely dangerous. The use or sale of these banned fireworks and explosives is considered a crime under Kansas law. It is also illegal in Kansas to shoot fireworks on or under any vehicle, on any public roadway, within 50 feet of a fireworks stand or where fireworks are stored, and at gas stations or any place liquid gas – including propane – is stored.

Always refer to the local ordinances as to whether fireworks are allowed in your area as well as what types.&nbsp; Some cities or counties have restricted dates/times or types of fireworks that may be sold or discharged.

In addition, out of respect for veterans when it comes to the individual discharge of fireworks, please keep in mind the noise and stress (PTSD) your activities may cause near VA facilities.

KDHE: Fireworks safety tips for Independence Day

While they may be a more common pest in garbage, raccoons also target the home garden. It seems as though racoons harvest sweet corn right before it is to be picked, so Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham recommends fencing as a prevention method.

“The only effective control measure I have had success with is fencing; either electric or kennel fencing,” Upham said.

To install electric fencing, use two or more wires, the first about five inches above the ground and the second four inches above the first (or nine inches above ground). Raccoons must not be able to crawl under, go between or go over the wires without being shocked.

Fence posts and insulators used for electric fences work well for this application.

“It is much easier to use the woven electric wire with strands of wire embedded than to use a solid metal wire. The woven wire is easier to bend around corners and to roll up when done for the year,” Upham said.

Upham suggests using battery operated fencing rather than plug-ins.

“Start the charger before the corn is close to being ripe. Once raccoons get a taste of the corn, they are more difficult to discourage,” Upham said.

He encourages weed control around the wire to prevent them from intercepting the voltage.

Kennel fencing can also be an alternative protection from raccoons.

“Make sure that the panels are tied together well enough that raccoons can’t squeeze through corners,” Upham said.

A covering over the top may be needed if the raccoons figure out how to climb the panels.

Welded garden fence can work well for this.

On June 29, 1927, the first trans-Pacific airplane flight was completed as U.S. Army Air Corps Lt. Lester J. Maitland and Lt. Albert F. Hegenberger arrived at Wheeler Field in Hawaii aboard the Bird of Paradise, an Atlantic-Fokker C-2, after flying 2,400 miles from Oakland, California, in 25 hours, 50 minutes.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency filed formal charges against Lance Armstrong, accusing the seven-time Tour de France winner of using performance-enhancing drugs throughout the best years of his career. (The USADA ended up stripping Armstrong of all his Tour de France titles and issued a lifetime ban from cycling.)

ABILENE, Kan.-Impact Sports and Fitness in Abilene announces an additional Nationally Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor has joined the staff. Mona Pflaster, a familiar face to patrons at the fitness facility for the past one and a half years working the front desk area, will now also be instructing group fitness classes and giving personal training.

When Mona was asked what she likes about working at Impact Sports and Fitness, she replied, “What is there NOT to like? My co-workers are fantastic and easy-going, and I enjoy coming to work each day.” Mona enjoys working out, so it was an easy decision for her to move into this additional role.

Mona is originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana. The family moved to the Abilene area in 2006. She has been married to her husband, Ryan, for 17 years. Ryan is a fireman for the Fort Riley Fire Department. Mona and Ryan have six children between them; Travis, 29; Tiffen, 23; Anna, 23; Skyleigh, 19; Torin, 18; and Zoe, four. They also have a nine-month old grandson named Leon.

In her spare time, in addition to working out, Mona enjoys spending time with her family, watching scary movies, and listening to music.

Impact Sports and Fitness welcomes new personal trainer

There’s a mayoral election taking place in Wichita, Kansas’s largest stand-alone city, right now. Also, strikes have been declared at Spirit AeroSystems, Wichita’s largest single employer, and Ascension Via Christi, the city’s largest hospital. What does all this have in common?

Potentially many things. The business slowdowns, budget deficits, and unemployment which any labor unrest may contribute to, are obviously all topics that people seeking political office are going to have to struggle with. And similarly, the positions taken by a city’s mayor can play a large role in determining how and when strikes or contract negotiations may be resolved. So, these topics are going to be entwined in Wichita, as they would in any community.

But there is another similarity between them, one that isn’t often noticed, but which I think lurks behind the scenes in how we approach either an election or a strike. When voters organize in support of someone running for political office, or when workers organize and make collective demands of their employer, we are seeing “factions” at work.

The concept of a faction—people who act together in support of their shared interests—has a storied place in our constitutional order. For much of history, factions were seen as poisonous; the assumption was that if people organized around particular agendas, there could be no united, “common” good. This meant societies had to stay small and simple and homogeneous, so as to prevent the factional temptation. But James Madison defended the proposed U.S. Constitution in part by insisting that factions were a natural result of human freedom. The goal shouldn’t be to prevent them, but to expand and include them, and seek to manage their effects instead.

Madisonian pluralism can be criticized, but it remains the way the American system usually looks upon factional differences. When employees have differences with how they are treated by their employers, they can organize into unions and make demands, including through strikes. True, many are suspicious of unions, and the Republican party, both nationally and in Kansas, has often opposed them. But even with the challenges the striking machinists and nurses might pose to Wichita’s economy, none of the candidates for mayor, including the Republican ones, spoke against the strikers as a faction (though some were more supportive than others).

It is odd that our recognition of factional differences on the factory or hospital floor often disappears, though. when it comes to City Hall. As I wrote above, there are Republicans running for Wichita’s mayor, as well as a Democrat and a Libertarian and unaffiliated candidates, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. Yet when it comes to local elections—in contrast to national and state ones—many share the belief that “partisanship” (which can just mean thinking and acting factionally, in support of the interests of one’s supporters) is poisonous, like was assumed by many long ago.

Parties can be corrupt, of course—in the same way unions, or for that matter businesses, can be. Institutional collusion and self-interest within any kind of faction or organization warrants being called out for such. But as the Wichita mayoral race moves forward, it will be interesting to see which candidates, if any, will be forthright--like the striking machinists and nurses have been--in defense of the factions they represent and the particular agenda they offer to voters, and which will instead insist that specific shared interests must be set aside in the name of a “unified” good.

Madison had some doubts about that approach, centuries ago; there are good reasons for us to doubt it still today.

Salina Police Sergeant Tonniges said this morning that at approximately 9:12 p.m. witnesses saw Tamara Savage-Knight, 50, Salina, northbound on Ninth Street when her red 2014 Ford Taurus veered left across the median and both southbound lanes.&nbsp;

Tonniges said the vehicle came to a rest against a retaining wall in a ditch in front of the Dillion's, 2350 Planet Avenue.&nbsp;

Multiple eyewitnesses to the crash reported to police that they saw Savage-Knight fleeing the scene, running northbound toward the McDonald's, 2236 Planet Avenue.

When officers arrived at McDonald's they spoke with Savage-Knight. Despite eyewitnesses seeing her leave the scene, she told officers she was not involved with the accident.&nbsp;

Tonniges also noted that Savage-Knight did have some injuries consistent with the seat belt lock and airbag deployment.

Towards the conclusion of officers questioning, Savage-Knight said she had been a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the accident.&nbsp;

Responding officers said they allegedly smelled the odor of alcohol on her breathe and that she had admitted to taking an undisclosed number of prescription pills that would inhibit her ability to drive a vehicle.&nbsp;

Salina Police conducted a DUI investigation, and she was determined to be impaired and was arrested for DUI. 

Tonniges said following the arrest, she complained of chest and back pain and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center. Officers ended up citing her for DUI, instead of making the custodial arrest because she was admitted to the hospital for leaving the scene of an accident.&nbsp;

Saline County Booking Activity, June 28

&nbsp;One of Kansas Wesleyan’s longest-running supporters has announced that it will deepen its relationship with the university. Marshall Motors, one of the leading automotive dealerships in the region, has gifted the university three new vehicles.

The three vehicles, two Nissan Sentras and a Chrysler Pacifica, were wrapped by Gleason &amp; Son Signs, a local company, and given to KWU. They display KWU logos and other university branding on the vehicles’ exterior.

“We are grateful to Marshall Motors for its generosity and faithfulness in supporting KWU through the years,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “These vehicles not only provide a way for our staff to travel, but also provide great branding as we do so.”

“My family and I have supported KWU for decades, and we’re extremely proud of that relationship,” said Larry Marshall, owner of Marshall Motors. “I, along with the rest of our company’s leadership team, have been very impressed with the university’s recent momentum, so it seemed like an appropriate time to deepen our relationship with KWU by making this gift.”

The warm and sunny "chamber weather" on Friday helped make for a well attended celebration of one year in business at<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083100592343&amp;mibextid=LQQJ4d"> La Cabana Bar and Grill</a>

&nbsp;The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the ribbon cutting ceremony with La Cabana owner, Sandy Lopez.&nbsp;

"We opened up in May of last year and it has been so great to see so many people in the restaurant," Marco Rico, Lopez's son, said.

Two years ago Lopez was working at the Salina Central Mall at an ice cream shop.

"She saved little by little over those two years and now she is living her dream," Rico said.&nbsp;

When asked what sets her kitchen apart from the other Mexican restaurants in town Lopez said, "Authenticity."

Lopez moved her hands quickly, demonstrating the way she makes her tortillas every day.

"Everything we make is authentic Mexican food," Lopez said. "The tortillas are authentic. The beans and rice are authentic, the meat, everything."

La Cabana is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sunday.

La Cabana Bar and Grill ribbon cutting, 'Authentic Mexican at a great price'

This is day 6 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas&nbsp;Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest continues to march across the state, moving into areas with higher abandonment, variability and pressure to get crops cut as unwelcome weeds take over short, thin stands.

Industry reports have indicated that early quality data from south central and central Kansas are showing good quality, with 60 pound test weights and above average proteins.

Troy Presley from CoMark Equity Alliance reported harvest began on June 8 and is now 50 percent complete. He expects the group’s approximately 75 locations in Kansas will take in about 40 to 45 percent of a normal crop. Yields range as low as five bushels per acre up to 40 bushels per acre, with anomalies in the 50s.&nbsp;

“There is still a lot to be determined in terms of abandonment, with all the weeds coming in,” he said.&nbsp;

The volatility in yields is due to farming practices and the previously planted crop. Overall test weights are averaging above 60 pounds per bushel and proteins are also much higher than average, with some variation.&nbsp;

This year’s challenges don’t end once the wheat is in the bin. Presley explained the group is also dealing with the inverted market environment, storage issues stemming from higher dockage from weeds, the logistics of the on-again, off-again harvest and trying to forecast whether farmers will sell now or store for later.&nbsp;

Weeds are also causing issues in central Kansas, but Dale Younker didn’t have any wheat of his own to harvest in northern Rush and southern Ellis counties. All of his winter wheat was appraised between 1.5 to 3 bushels per acre, so they terminated the entire crop and planted everything back to grain sorghum.&nbsp;

That wheat was appraised before any rain fell, so some fields could have yielded better. Short-term droughts are typical for this area in central Kansas, but he explained this dry spell goes back to fall 2021.&nbsp;

“I’ve been at this for 30 plus years, that I’ve been farming on my own,” Younker said. “And I do not remember a time when we were so dry for so long.”&nbsp;

Younker and his crew did break out the harvest equipment to help out a neighbor, cutting a few fields northeast of LaCrosse from Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon. Yields were down significantly with one field making around 20 bushels per acre and the other in the low 30s. Test weights were a little down at 58.5 to 59 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

The area has been receiving some rain since the first week of May but is either still in D4 (exceptional) drought or just out of it. As a result, Younker’s grain sorghum was planted in decent conditions, but more rain will be needed to take that next crop to harvest.&nbsp;

“That’s what we’re shooting for, that’s why we didn’t hesitate to put milo behind this failed wheat,” he explained. “That weather pattern is going to shift. And with the rains we did have, we had some good moisture to get that milo up and going and off to a good start.”&nbsp;

Far eastern Kansas farmers said they feel very fortunate to have received moisture earlier throughout the growing season, unlike producers in the western two-thirds of the state. Harvest should wrap up by the end of this week in Franklin County, according to Clark Wenger, general manager/CEO of Ottawa Coop. The area planted twice as many wheat acres this year and combined with an uncommon set of great growing conditions, the harvest is better than expected.

Area producers brought in a few loads on June 15, but harvest didn’t take off until June 19. Both HRW and SRW are planted in this area, about 30 percent soft to 70 percent hard. Yields for HRW are coming in up to 60 to 70 bushels per acre, with test weights at 60 to 61 pounds per bushel and proteins between 9 and 12 percent.&nbsp;

Day 6, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

The Smoky View 4-H Club has been busy preparing for the upcoming Tri-Rivers Fair in Salina&nbsp;starting on August 9.On June 18, members of the club met to discuss donations, fair parade preparation, and projects to present at the fair.&nbsp;

Smoky View members considered themes for two Tri-Rivers Fair Silent Auction baskets. Some suggestions made included summer activities and movie night. Members will donate items for these baskets in the coming months.&nbsp;

The club also talked about putting together a float for the Tri-Rivers Fair parade. Families were selected to plan and lead the float.&nbsp;

Lastly, some 4-H members showed off their 4-H projects and presentations.&nbsp;

He spoke about the bases, runs, stealing, and many other rules and plays in baseball.&nbsp;Ridge and Beau Johnson described a wooden bench and table that they constructed for the woodworking project. They discussed the finish used for the wood, the types of wood used (pine and cedar), and the tools they used to create their projects.&nbsp;The club will meet again&nbsp;at 4 p.m. July 23&nbsp;in the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;
